James E. Wommack

James E. Wommack, 77, of Byhalia, died Jan. 12, 2006 at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Collierville, Tenn. He was the widower of Mary Pruitt Wommack. He was a Baptist and a heat/air serviceman.

Services were held at 1 p.m. on Jan. 16 at Holly Springs Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Hill Crest Cemetery.

He leaves a daughter, Patricia Haney of Byhalia; a brother, Dean Wommack of Byhalia; two sisters, Earlene Bailey of Byhalia, Mary McGraw of Summerville, Ga.; four grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Randy Breedlove, Jimmy Breedlove, Chris Conway, Danny Conway, Steven Breedlove and Cody Spoon.

Everett Paul Bennett

Everett Paul Bennett, 51, of Bogato, Tx., died Apr. 9, 2007. He was a Christian, and employee with Lowes and an Army and Navy veteran.

Services were held at 1 p.m. on April 12 at Holly Springs Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in New Hope Cemetery in Harmontown.

He leaves his parents, Haskell and Beth Bennett of Como; his grandmother, Norma Bankston of Collierville, Tenn.; two brothers, David Wayne Bennett of Como, Timothy Austin Bennett of Georgia; and two sisters, Sallie Bennett of Byhalia, and Debbie Bennett of Como.

Mary Lou Hall Dean

Mary Lou Hall Dean, 82, of Waterford, died April 11, 2007 at her home. She was the widow of J.T. Dean, a member of Walton Chapel CME Church and a former usher.

Services were held at Hamilton Chapel CME Church in Waterford. Burial was in the church cemetery. Rev. Eric Shields officiated. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

She leaves three daughters, Marilyn Smith of Waterford, Jacqueline Shaw of Dallas, Tx., Janice Nunnally of Holly Springs; three sons, Lorinzo Hall of Holly Springs, Richard Earl Stokes of Tupelo, Darnell Stokes of Baldwyn; three sisters, Laura Bolden, Evie Thompson, both of Memphis, Tenn., Earlene Isom of Holly Springs; two brothers, Nathaniel Hall of Miami, Fla., Robert Hall of Pontiac, Mich.; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Kendrick Hill, Sandy Pegues, Marvin Stokes, Glenn Johnson, Marcus Johnson and James Taylor. Honorary pallbearers were Darnell Stokes, Lorinzo Hall, Larry Smith, Richard Stokes, Robert Hall Sr. and Artis Nunnally.

Reaner Briggs Dortch

Reaner Briggs Dortch, 84, of Lamar, died April 7, 2007 at Trinity Mission Health and Rehab. She was the widow of Walter Carter Dortch. She was a member of Greenwood Lodge #58A, Order of Eastern Star, member of church choir, church mother’s board, Missionary Board and Home and Foreign Missions. She was a nutritionist aide with Marshall County Extension Service.

Services were held at 12 noon on April 14 at Concord MB Church in Slayden, where she was a member. Burial was in the church cemetery. Rev. Clyde Williams officiated. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

She leaves three daughters, Alma Dortch, Florida Jones, Flora Dortch, all of Lamar; four sons, David Dortch, Walter Henry Dortch, both of Memphis, Tenn., Cornell Dortch, Earnest Dortch, both of Lamar; three sisters, Saloan Anderson, Katherine Wallace, both of Memphis, Tenn., Annie Cunningham of Lamar; 12 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Henry Coleman, Andrew Morman, Ronald Jones, Arthur Love, Lemon Phelps, Larry Alexander, Joseph Wyatt and James Williams. Honorary pallbearers were sons and grandsons.

Willie Stella Gowdy

Willie Stella Gowdy, 70, of Hickory Flat, died April 11, 2007 at Baptist Memorial Hospital. She was the widow of Joe B. Dowdy.

Services were held at 11 a.m. on April 13 at First Baptist Church in Hickory Flat, where she was a member. Burial was in McKay Cemetery in Hickory Flat. Holly Springs Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

She leaves a son, Terry Joe Gowdy of Hickory Flat; two daughters, Toni of Butler, Ala., Tina Burks of Hickory Flat; a brother, Earl Shelton of New Albany; two sisters, Johnnie May of Hickory Flat, Shirley May of Holly Springs; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Dr. John Taylor Grant

Dr. John Taylor Grant, 76, of Southaven, died April 11, 2007 at Methodist Hospital in Germantown, Tenn. He was a graduate of the University of Mississippi School of Pharmacy and a retired pharmacist for Walgreens. He served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War and was a member of the Methodist Church in Holly Springs.

Services were held at 1 p.m. on April 13 at Twin Oaks Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Twin Oaks Memorial Gardens in Southaven.

He leaves his wife, Floy Grant; a son, Todd Grant of Bartlett, Tenn.; two daughters, Gwen Norris of Eads, Tenn., Susan Armour of Cordova, Tenn.; a stepson, Gerald Tarrance of Coldwater; a stepdaughter, Donna Bell of Southaven; a sister, Annie Sue Bright of New Albany; and 10 grandchildren.

Chester Lee Hardy

Chester Lee Hardy, 54, of Memphis, Tenn., formerly of Holly Springs, died March 29, 2007 at Regional Medical Center.

Graveside services were held at 10 a.m. on April 11 at New Hope CME Church Cemetery. Minister Regina Hardy officiated. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

He leaves a nephew, Dwight Hardy of Holly Springs; and a niece, Regina Hardy.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Thelma Hardy Hall and Ophelia Hardy.

Edith Emmaline Hoover

Edith Emmaline Hoover, 100, of Memphis, Tenn., died April 13, 2007 at Methodist Hospital North in Memphis. She was the widow of William Porter Hoover Sr. and a Methodist.

Services were held at 11 a.m. on April 16, 2007 at Holly Springs Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Liberty Methodist Cemetery in Ashland.

She leaves three daughters, Mary Jane Hoover Dotson of Memphis, Tenn., Emma Lucille Hoover of Lake Worth, Fla., Lena Hoover Jordan of Ripley; 20 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, William Porter (Sonny) Hoover Jr.; and two daughters, Wilma Louise Hoover Anderson and Peggy Jean Hoover Campbell.
