Bonnie Joe Ash

Bonnie Joe Ash, 71, of Memphis, Tenn., died April 16, 2014, in Memphis. She was a member of Hope Presbyterian Church and employed in retail sales.

Services were held at 11 a.m. on April 22 at Holly Springs Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Asbury Cemetery in Waterford. Bro. Farron Ash officiated.

She leaves a son, Larry Dyer (Melissa) of Monument, Colo.; a daughter, Susie Lewis of Olive Branch; six brothers, Henry Ash, Ricky Ash, Lonnie Ash, all of Potts Camp, Jackie Ash of New Albany, Danny Ash, Mikey Ash, both of Potts Camp; two sisters, Sue Bolden of Holly Springs and Chris Hatchett of Waterford; and four grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Bonita Dyer; a brother, Gene Ash; and a sister, Viola Ash Swinford.

Pallbearers were Keifer Bolden, Jodie Swinford, Caleb Dyer, Daniel Dyer, Lonnie Ash Jr., Kyle Swinford, Joshua Dyer and Joseph Dyer.

Odessa Bailey

Odessa “Dee” Bailey, 74, of Byhalia, died April 20, 2014. She was the widow of Carl P. Hawkins and Jerry Bailey. She was a member of Victory Baptist Church in Independence.

Services were held at 11 a.m. on April 22 at Hernando Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Mt. Zion Cemetery in Independence.

She leaves her sister, Joyce Hutton of Seattle, Wash.; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Rhonda Knight; and son, Christopher Hawkins.

James C. Braddock

James C. “J.C.” Braddock, 81, of Holly Springs, died April 14, 2014, at Baptist Hospital in Oxford. He was the widower of Dorothy Sims Braddock. He worked as a farmer and laborer at the cotton gin in Holly Springs. He later retired from the U.S. Forestry Service. He was a member of New Hope CME Church.

Services were held at 12 noon on April 19 at Serenity Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in New Hope CME Church Cemetery in Red Banks. Rev. Doris Alexander and Rev. Charles E. Dooley officiated.

He leaves four daughters, Debra Braddock, Brenda Falkner (Clevion), Sharon Braddock, all of Holly Springs, JoAllen Hale (Herman) of Mt. Pleasant; a sister, Teresa Tunstall of Memphis, Tenn.; stepchildren, Thomas (Cathedral) Wilkins, Robert Louis Wilkins, both of Holly Springs; 21 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Ann; siblings Leroy, Sherman, Lottie, Lucille, Mary Alice and Ethel; and a grandson, Marcus; and stepchildren T.C., Sandra and Karry.

Fannie Crawford Gatewood

Fannie Crawford Gatewood, 88, of Holly Springs, died April 15, 2014, at her home. She was the widow of Donnie Gatewood Sr. She was a member of the church’s mother board, a member of the choir and an usher. She was a retired factory worker with Sunbeam in Holly Springs.

Services were held at 11 a.m. on April 19 at Isom Chapel CME Church in Holly Springs, where she was a member. Burial was in the church cemetery. Rev. Joe T. Lester officiated. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

She leaves five children, Donnie Gatewood Jr. (Eunice) of Memphis, Tenn., Ralph D. Gatewood (Linda) of Irving, N.Y., Theoda Gatewood (Gail) of Syracuse, N.Y., Hennie Ella Garrison of Buffalo, N.Y., Jerlene Joseph of Miami, Fla.; three sisters, Virgie L. DeBerry, Malinda Thomas, Maxine Thomas (James) of Grand Rapids, Mich.; a brother, David Crawford (Marion) of Golden Valley, Minn.; 25 grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

Bishop Cleve Mays

Bishop Cleve Mays, 90, of Memphis, Tenn., formerly of Red Banks, died April 15, 2014, at Allenbrooke Nursing Home in Memphis. He was the widower of Juanita Glass Mays. He was a member of Newell Chapel CME Church in Victoria, a Sunday school teacher, former superintendent of church building and grounds, a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a retired maintenance worker for the Marshall County School District.

Services were held at 11 a.m. on April 19 at Taylor’s Chapel United Methodist Church in Victoria. Burial was in the church cemetery. Rev. Terry Smith officiated. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

He leaves four children, Bertha Mays, Catherine Cosby (Edward), Christine Taylor (David) of Memphis, Bishop C. Mays Jr. of Cordova, Tenn.; a sister, Louise Mays Mitchell of Memphis; a brother, Joseph Mays of Memphis; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Mays Neal.

Allen Coleman Rhea

Allen Coleman Rhea, 84, of Tippah County, died April 19, 2014 in Ripley. He was a heavy equipment operator.

Services were held at 10 a.m. on April 22 at Cornersville Baptist Church, where he was a member. Burial was in the Cornersville Cemetery. Bro. Joe Epting and Bro. Thomas Chandler officiated.

He leaves a son, Kenneth Rhea of Hickory Flat; a daughter, Pamela Rhea Simpson (Larry) of Senatobia; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Harriet “Marie” Johnson

Harriet “Marie” Johnson, 99, entered into eternal rest on Tuesday, April 15, 2014.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Roy G. Johnson Sr. ; son Roy G. Johnson Jr.; and grandson Erik Hunter Hall.

She is survived by two daughters, Carole (JB) Kiser of Germantown, TN, and Janet Papineau of Holly Springs, MS. She was blessed with 7 grandchildren and a host of great-grandchildren and 1 great-great grandson; by 2 sisters Lois Best of Chapel Hill, NC, and Bette Haynes of Charleston, SC.

A memorial service will be held at Germantown United Methodist Church, Saturday, May 3, 2014, at 11 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Elder Care Ministry at Germantown United Methodist Church, 3700 S. Germantown Parkway, Germantown, TN 38138 or the First United Methodist Church, 121 E. 7th St., Michigan City, IN 46360.

Sandra Lynn Umberger Tolbert

Sandra Lynn Umberger Tolbert, 68, of Barton, died March 30, 2014 at Methodist Hospital in Olive Branch. She taught baton for over 40 years.

She was preceded in death by her parents Larkin and Claudie Umberger and a brother Claude Tramble Umberger.

She leaves four children, Jennifer (Sabino) Allen-Mendez, Penny (Scott) Bagwell, both of Barton, Tim (Debbie) Tolbert of Hernando, Donna (Jackie) Beene of Olive Branch; a sister, Inez (George) Williams of Collierville, Tenn.; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

A private burial will be held at a later date. The family is requesting that any memorials be sent to the American Heart Association in her name.
