Tuesday, December 30th 2008

Barbara “Barb” Nelson Harper, 64, a retired secretary, died Sunday evening in Glasgow Deaconess Hospital, following a long battle with lung cancer. Cremation has already taken place under the direction of Bell Mortuary. Family and friends will hold a wake in celebration of her life at the family home at 115 Sargent, in Nashua, beginning at 4p.m. on December 31, 2008; all are welcome. Private family services will be held at a later date.
Barb is survived by her husband, Paul Harper, a daughter, Cheri (Rusty) Lambert of Great Falls, son, Terry (Brenda) Smith of Johnson City, Tennessee, and stepsons Jon (Tarron) Harper of Texas. Shannon (Bea) Harper of Billings, and Chad Harper of Billings, grandsons Dylan and Zane Lambert, Cody Smith, Andrew and Mathew Harper, and a granddaughter, Cheyenne Harper, sister Gail Holleran of Texas, brothers Erik (Helen) Nelson, Hawaii, and Gary Nelson, Nashua, nephew Squeak (Connie) Tihista, and many other beloved nephews, nieces, and close family friends.

Barb was horn on February 8, 1944, in Lewistown, Montana, to George and Norma Nelson. She attended elementary school in Lewistown and then later, in Roy, Montana, where she graduated from high school in 1961. She married airman Marshal Smith in 1965, and spent the next several years traveling throughout the U.S. and Europe, living in Florida, California, and Germany, where she met her best friend for life, Sandy. In 1974, she returned to Nashua, where she would live for the rest of her life. She married Gordon Leraas in 1976, and helped him with the family farm until his death in 1980. In 1982, she met and married her best friend, Paul Harper, with whom she would share the rest of her life.

Barb was an accomplished poet, and pool player, winning many tournaments with her brother, Gary. She was also rumored to have been unbeaten by either gender in leg wrestling. She was a huge stock car racing fan, forming the D&L Racing Company to sponsor stock car racing at Duck Creek during the 1980’s, and warned all that she couldn’t be bothered during a Nascar race. Her favorite thing to do was to camp out at Fort Peck Lake with family and friends, which she did many times each summer. She also thoroughly enjoyed gardening, and Christmas; decorating her entire house and yard each year during the holidays. Family was the most important thing to Barb, and she took great pride in being a grandmother, and in rallying the family for vacations and family roasts. She had an incredible memory, a great sense of humor, and an infectious smile and laugh, which she gave freely. She will be greatly missed.

Barb was preceded in death by her parents, George Nelson and Norma Skolrud, and by her best friend, Sandra Wasser. In lieu of flowers, donations should be made to the charity of choice.
