Magnus Russell Swanson, 88, passed away of natural causes on August 21, 2009, at Hi-Line Retirement Center in Malta. The son of Evelyn (Whitaker) and Martin Swanson, Magnus was born June 25, 1921, on the farm/ranch where his father migrated to from Sweden to homestead north of Hinsdale, MT. He graduated from Hinsdale High School in 1939 and joined the United States Navy. On March 18, 1943, he married Betty Jane Qualey in Memphis, TN, while still in the Navy. Their son, Magnus Russell II (Mick) was born while Magnus was away on a tour of duty. When he was discharged from the Navy, Magnus came home and got acquainted with his son. They made their home on the farm/ranch north of Hinsdale where their 2 daughters, Cheryl Kaye and Patricia Joyce were also born.

Magnus and his brother, Edwin, jointly owned and shared the duties on the farm/ranch until Ed purchased the Case business and moved to Glasgow. Magnus was always very proud that he had the best crops he could produce and quality livestock. In his busy life on the farm, Magnus still found time to become a director for Valley Rural Telephone and a board member of the FMDH foundation. Magnus was a lifetime member of the American Legion and a member of the Algeria Shrine of North America and a member of the Masonic Lodge #96 of Hinsdale for 46 years.

Upon Magnus’ retirement, his son, Mick, took over the farm/ranch business. Magnus and Betty built a new home and moved into Hinsdale where they relaxed and enjoyed their grandchildren. You couldn’t get the farm out of Magnus though. He still made daily trips to the country to see how things were going.

Magnus was preceded in death by his parents, Martin & Evelyn Swanson, his wife of 40 years, Betty, brother, Edwin V. Swanson, daughter, Patricia Joyce Sanderson, son, Magnus Russell Swanson II (Mick), granddaughters, Marisa Dawn Sanderson and Laurel Jane Hillman, grandsons Bryan David Hillman and Russell Magnus Swanson and his second wife, Nel (Hetrick) Swanson .

Magnus is survived by his daughter, Cheryl (Ken Jansa) Hillman of Glasgow, daughter in law, Sharon Swanson of Hinsdale, son in law, James (Darlene) Sanderson of Miles City, 6 grandchildren Heather (Kelly) Monson of Glasgow, Heidi (Mark) Johnson, Stacie (Ray) Canen and Tyler (Christina) Hillman all of Hinsdale, James (Tammy) Sanderson of Polson and Jess (LaDonna)Sanderson of Billings, 13 great grandchildren and 5 nieces and nephews, John, Jeff, & Marc Swanson and Connie Johnson & Yvonne Johnson all of Glasgow, a step-daughter Vicki Nelson of Billings and her children Brent Braden and Kaysi Braden.

The family wishes to thank the employees of Hi -Line Retirement Center of Malta for their kind compassion & understanding of Magnus’s needs during his stay at their facility.

Services for Magnus will be Friday, August 28th, 2009, at 10:00 a.m. at the American Legion Hall in Hinsdale with internment at the Hillview Cemetery in Hinsdale.

Reginald D. Hotomani went to be with the Lord on August 10, 2009 at the Regina General Hospital in Regina Saskatchewan, after a short battle with cancer.

Reg was born on May 14, 1953 to Mike Ryder and Ruth Hotomani on the Assiniboine Reserve.

Reg moved to the states in November 1971 and this was his home until his death. Reg met Mary Sue Jackson and together they had and raised seven children.

In Reggie’s younger days he enjoyed softball, hunting and fishing. He also enjoyed mechanicing, playing pool and horseshoes. Reggie also worked at A&S Industries, Frazer Elevator, farmed for Hentges, was self-employed in his shop, Reggie’s Repair, and the last 5 years as head custodian, maintenance, and bus driver at the Frazer School.

Dad was preceded in death by his parents Mike Ryder and Ruth Hotomani, his two sisters Rosemary Bull Chief and Glennis Jack, and a brother Elvis Hotomani.

He is survived by his wife of 38 years Mary Sue Jackson of Frazer, Montana, 5 sons; Milo (Jewel) Jackson, Marlin (Tina) Jackson, Morris (Lana) Jackson, Myron (Dejondra) Jackson, all of Frazer, Miles (Athea) Jackson of Wolf Point, two daughters; Marla (Richard) Jackson-Clark of Frazer and Marlyce (Karen McNabb) Jackson of Wolf Point. He was also raising two grandsons; Jacob and Jeffrey Flynn of Frazer, and had 30 grandchildren and 3 great-grand children. Also surviving Reg was 3 sisters; Mildred Hotomani of Carry The Kettle Reserve, Francis Jackson of Wolf Point, MT, and Meryle Montclair of Regina, Saskatchewan. 3 brothers; Terry Ryder of Carry The Kettle Saskatchewan, Michael (Shirley) Hotomani of Frazer, MT, Garty (Cindy) Hotomani of Regina, Saskatchewan, 43 nieces and nephews, 134 grandchildren, and 17 great-grand children from Montana and Canada.

Diane lived in Havre and Loring, Montana and graduated from Saco High School in 1956. On September 6, 1957 she married Tony Dull in Malta, Montana. She lived for eleven years in Saco and then moved to Hinsdale in 1967 and has resided there since.

She enjoyed animals, cats, loved to visit, and was especially proud of her grandchildren. She loved cribbage and worked part time at Stoughie’s.

Oliver Leonard Moen, long-time Valley County veteran and businessman, died Saturday August 1, 2009 at age 93.
Leonard was born to Marie Eklund in 1916 in Haynes, North Dakota. Marie homesteaded south of Opheim when he was very young. His stepfather, Andrew Moen, died in 1925. Marie died in 1928, leaving Leonard an orphan at age 12. He then lived with his aunt and uncle, Victor and Grace Eklund and their nine children. At age 16, Leonard headed west and eventually joined the Civilian Conservation Corps, working in Northern California.
Leonard returned to Glasgow and worked on the Fork Peck Dam. He enlisted in The National Guard, serving for thirteen months. In February 1942 Leonard and Mary Ann Clowes of Glasgow were married in Seattle. He volunteered to serve in The U.S. Army in World War II, with training at Fort Lewis, Washington. Leonard served in the 8th Engineers of the 1st Cavalry Division and participated in the invasion of Luzon and other islands in the Philippines as well as in New Guinea. He attained the rank of T. Sgt. and received numerous awards.
Leonard was honorably discharged from the army on August 19, 1945, and returned to Glasgow to meet his two year old daughter, Gwen, for the first time. He enjoyed being a weekend farmer on his mother’s homestead. He worked as a mechanic, and he and Mary Ann owned Moen’s Rental from the early 1960’s until his retirement. He was an active community member, involved in The American Legion, VFW, and The Lion’s. Leonard served on various boards: Glasgow School District, State Board of Vocational Education, First Lutheran Church, Valley View, and Sunnyside Golf Course.
In retirement, Leonard enjoyed family, gardening, golf, cross country skiing, bridge, friends, home renovation, woodworking, reading, crossword puzzles, and cooking. His family is grateful to have shared him for so long. He was a kind, gentle, hard-working man with a strong Christian faith.
Preceding Leonard in death were his mother and stepfather, his sister, Anna Stowe, his brother, Norman Ahlstrom, and seven cousins.
Leonard is survived by his wife of sixty-seven years, Mary Ann, and their four children, seven grand children, eight great grandchildren, his cousins Frances Eklund Nygard and Victor Eklund, and many beloved nieces, nephews, and friends. Children are: Gwen (Gary) Truex of San Rafael, California; Norma (Jim) Nakamine of Novato, California, Ruth (Steve) Carnal of Fargo, North Dakota; and Dean Moen of Glasgow.
Grand children are Grey (Terese) Truex, Laird Truex, Nelson Carnal, Juan (Kelly) Carnal, Laurel Nakamine, Sandra (Albert) Carnal, and Wade Nakamine.

Elizabeth (Liese) T. Friesen always called “Liz” by family and friends was born in the
Province Tourien in Russia on the half island Crimea on February 25, 1906 in the village
of Annovoka, Post Station Kurman. Her parents were Elizabeth (Toews) and Jacob J.
Friesen. Liz, age 103 years, passed away quietly in her sleep on August 2, 2009

She came to the United States with her family in 1907 at the age of 18 months. She accompanied her parents, a teen age uncle, Jake Toews, and her brothers, Jake (2 1/2 yrs) and Abe (2 months). They left the village of Annovoka in the Crimea to cross Europe and England and set out for the new world from Southampton on the ship, Saxonia. They landed at Boston, Mass on the 4th of July 1907. From Boston the family went by train to Carpenter, South Dakota to join other Dutch Mennonites. The family rented several different farms in this area for a number of years. The opportunity to have their very own land came in 1916, when land in northeastern Montana was open for homesteading. Elizabeth and her family, which now had another brother Pete, and two sisters, Kay and Sally, arrived in Oswego, MT. on October 8, 1916 and from there went the 25 miles north to their homestead in the Lustre community.

Liz returned to Oswego in 1926 where she worked for the Tyner and Smith family as a hired girl for the next forty some years. She was an excellent cook, gardener, and housekeeper and went on to be a nurse companion, chauffeur, confidant, school clerk, election board judge and Sunday School teacher. On November 15, 1927 she became a citizen of the United States in Glasgow, Valley County. Liz spent her entire life taking care of others, from small babies to the elderly.

Liz was a beloved big sister who always remembered the birthdays of her siblings and nieces and nephews. Her usual gift was a box of homemade divinity. Liz continued to live in Oswego until fire destroyed her home on September 11, 1971. She then moved to Nashua to live near her sister, Sally (Henry) Kuecks and a niece, Shirley (Levi) Ersland.

Liz is a member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Nashua, the Nashua American Legion Auxiliary and the Nashua Senior Citizens.

On January 13, 2003, she retired to live in Glasgow, Montana at “Our Place” where she was lovingly cared for by Shelly Erickson and her staff. Then on January 3, 2008 she moved to the Faith Lutheran Home in Wolf Point, Montana.

Liz is survived by her brothers: Hank (Rose) and Julius (Harriet) Friesen of Wolf Point and a sister Marie (Ralph) Davis of Casper, Wyoming and sisters-in-law Elizabeth (Pete) and Ida (John) Friesen of Glasgow, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her brothers: Jake, Abe, Pete, John and Ben and her sisters Eva Eggebrecht, Kathryn Hawkins and Sally Kuecks.
