Mr. Hall D. Mullis

SNOW CAMP - Mr. Hall Duane Mullis, 75, of 168 Greensboro-Chapel Hill Road, died at 2:55 a.m. Saturday, May 16, 1998, at his home after three years of failing health, one month critical.

A native of Alexander County, he was the husband of Mrs. Catherine Lee Mullis, who survives, and the son of Mr. Robe Osborne Mullis and Mrs. Katie Bumgarner Mullis, both deceased. He was retired from Southern Bell Telephone and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of the AT&T Pioneers, Sylvan Ruritan Club and the Burlington Lodge 721 AF&AM. He was a member of Cane Creek Friends Meeting.

Survivors other than his wife of the home include a daughter, Mrs. Jim (Denise Mullis) Hawks of Snow Camp; a son, Mr. Tony Mullis of Snow Camp; three sisters, Mrs. Daphae Vranish of Port Huron, Mich., and Mrs. Shirley Mitchell and Mrs. Mary Kate Watts, both of Taylorsville; and four grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at Cane Creek Friends Meeting by the Rev. Dale Matthews, Dr. Perry Ross and Mr. Jeffrey Hagood. Burial will be in Cane Creek Friends Meeting cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Cane Creek Friends Meeting, 719 W. Greensboro-Chapel Hill Road, Snow Camp, N.C. 27349; or to Hospice of Alamance-Caswell, P.O. Box 2122, Burlington, N.C. 27216-2122.

Mr. Paul V. Jones

BURLINGTON - Mr. Paul V. Jones died Saturday, May 16, 1998, at Alamance Regional Medical Center.

Wilkerson Funeral Home in Reidsville is in charge of arrangements, which are incomplete.

Dr. James A. Davis Sr.

BURLINGTON - Dr. James A. Davis Sr., 77, of 556 Parkview Drive, died Sunday evening, May 17, 1998, at Skilled Nursing Division of Alamance Health Services, after several years of failing health.

native of Walnut Cove, he was the husband of Mrs. Norma C. Davis, who survives, and the son of Mr. Arthur Winburn Davis and Mrs. Carrie Crews Davis, both deceased. He served in the U.S. Army with the 686 Ordinance Ammo., Company T, made up of Greensboro men, serving in Africa and the Italian campaigns. Upon his return to civilian life, he went to New York, where he graduated from Long Island University and on to the New York College of Podiatry in Manhattan.

During his 42 years of practice, Dr. Davis was twice president of the North Carolina Podiatric Medical Society and was presented a plaque of Special Recognition for his outstanding services to the society upon his retirement in 1992. He was made life member of the American Podiatric Medical Association where he served as delegate to the National House of Delegates at the Denver and San Francisco meetings.

He was a member of Front Street United Methodist Church where he was a member of the Front Street Choir for 45 years, and served on many church committees, worked with the Boy Scouts as Webelo leader, Methodist Men Bible Study/Breakfast Group, hymn director and teacher of his Sunday school class, The Builders Class. He was made life member of the Administrative Board and honorary steward. He was a member of the Grasshopper Opera Group and the Burlington Chorale. He was a member of Bula Masonic Lodge No. 409 and the Burlington Kiwanis Club.

Survivors other than his wife of the home include two daughters, Mrs. Camille D. Euliss of Burlington and Mrs. Lauralee D. Bailey of Charlotte; a son, Mr. James A. "Jad" Davis Jr. of Woodstock, Va.; a sister, Mrs. Joem Gaffney of Silver Springs, Md.; and 12 grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at Rich and Thompson Chapel in Burlington by Dr. William C. Simpson, pastor of Front Street United Methodist Church, and Dr. G. Robert McKenzie. Burial will be in Pine Hill Cemetery.

Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Burlington Kiwanis Club.

The family will be at Rich and Thompson Mortuary in Burlington from 6 to 8 Wednesday evening.

Mr. James H. Moore

EFLAND - Mr. James Henry Moore, 67, of 4700 High Rock Road, died Sunday, May 17, 1998, at his home.

Born Aug. 28, 1930, in Orange County, he was the husband of Mrs. Jacqueline Paulson Moore, who survives, and the son of Mr. Luther Diah Moore and Mrs. Molly Lou Davis Moore, both deceased. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War. He was a truck driver for Hancor of Mebane for 19 years. He was a Baptist.

Survivors other than his wife of the home include two sisters, Ms. Betty Lou Terry of Mebane and Ms. Alma Shepherd of Efland; a brother, Mr. Earle Moore of Burlington; eight stepchildren; 20 step grandchildren; and one great-step grandchild.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Mr. Maynard Moore.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at Walker's Funeral Home of Mebane by the Rev. Rick Blackmore. Burial will be in Alamance Memorial Park.

Mr. Albert H. Haney

BURLINGTON - Mr. Albert Harold Haney, 76, of 315 Homewood Ave., died Sunday, May 17, 1998, at his home.

A native of Catawba County, he was the husband of Mrs. Jean Wall Haney, who survives, and the son of Mr. Arthur Lewis Haney and Mrs. Annie Hunter Haney, both deceased. He was a retired chief master sergeant with the U.S. Air Force, after serving more than 30 years. He was later employed with the North Carolina Employment Security Commission. He was a member of Disabled American Veterans, American Legion Post 63 and Veterans of Foreign Wars. He received the Bronze Star for outstanding service in Vietnam. He was a 1948 graduate of Elon College.

Survivors other than his wife of the home include two daughters, Dr. Susan Haney of Millbank, S.D., and Ms. Anita Haney of Irvine, Calif.; three sons, Mr. Jim Haney of Erwin, Mr. Al Haney Jr. of Pomona, Calif., and Mr. Bob Haney of Burlington; two sisters, Mrs. Mary Harrington and Mrs. Mildred Hughes, both of Greensboro; a brother, Mr. Charles Hunter Haney of Lynn, Mass.; and five grandchildren.

A memorial service will be conducted at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Lowe Funeral Home Chapel by Chaplain Wayne Staves of the American Legion.

The family will be at the funeral home after the service, and at other times at the home.

Memorials may be made to the American Legion Baseball Team, American Legion Post No. 63, 315 W. Willowbrook Dr., Burlington, N.C. 27215.

Mrs. Margaret Linnens

BURLINGTON - Mrs. Margaret Loman Linnens of Twin Lakes Center, Wade Coble Drive, died at 1:58 a.m. Monday, May 18, 1998, at Twin Lakes Center after several years of failing health. She was formerly of 2801 Pinewood Trace.

A native of Alamance County, she was the wife of the late Mr. George Ashley Linnens Sr., and the daughter of Mr. J.R. Loman and Mrs. Cara Blanche Love Loman, both deceased. She was formerly employed by Guilford Dairy and the Food World Bakery. She was a charter member of Saint John's United Church of Christ.

Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Virgil (Ann) Stadler of Burlington, Mrs. Thomas (Doris) Brammar of Apex and Mrs. David (Vickie) Sims of Graham; a son, Mr. George A. Linnens Jr. of Whitsett; three sisters, Mrs. Erma Lambert of Burlington, Mrs. Ethel Cheek of Graham and Mrs. Carol Nicholson of Statesville; two half brothers, Mr. Ervin Loman of California and Mr. Buddy Loman of Swepsonville; 12 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by several brothers and sisters.

A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Pine Hill cemetery by the Rev. Scott Woody, associate pastor of programming and administrtion at St. Marks Reformed Church.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 1236 Huffman Mill Road, Suite 1050, Alamance Regional Medical Arts Center, Burlington, N.C. 27215.

Miss Cornelia Montgomery

BURLINGTON - Miss Cornelia Montgomery, 74, of 127 Holt St., died at 9:25 p.m. Sunday, May 17, 1998, at Alamance Regional Medical Center.

Born Dec. 9, 1923, in Alamance County, she was the daughter of Mr. Thomas Murphy Montgomery and Mrs. Hattie Phillips Montgomery, both deceased. She was a retired employee of Burlington Industries Inc. He was a member of Carolina United Church of Christ.

Survivors include nephews and nieces.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Carolina United Church of Christ by the Rev. Michael Shannon, pastor. Burial will be in the Carolina Community Cemetery.

Mr. Lacy L. Hooper

BURLINGTON - Mr. Lacy Lee Hooper, 94, of 5008 Union Ridge Road, died at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 20, 1998, at his home after a critical illness of one week.

A native of Caswell County, he was the husband of the late Mrs. Nannie Lou Aldridge Hooper, and the son of Mr. John Wright Hooper and Mrs. Lela Reid Hooper, both deceased. He was a retired farmer and co-owner of Walker and Hooper Feed and Seed. He was the oldest member of Union Ridge United Church of Christ, where he was former member of the Board of Deacons, member of the Hustlers Class, Golden Age Fellowship and was a former Sunday School Teacher. He was a charter member of the Pleasant Grove Civitan Club.

Survivors include three sisters, Mrs. Bessie Mae Hughes and Mrs. Annie Lou Rice, both of Burlington, and Mrs. Jewel Maxine McAdams of Columbia, S.C.; and two brothers, Mr. Wilbur Warren "Black" Hooper and Mr. Raney Reid "Buck" Hooper, both of Burlington.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Mrs. Fannie Sue Barnwell; and two brothers, Mr. John Lewis Hooper and Mr. Hubert Earl Hooper.

The funeral will be conducted at 7 p.m. Friday at Union Ridge United Church of Christ by the Rev. Phil Hardy, pastor. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The family will be at the church fellowship building from 5 to 6:30 this evening, and at other times at the home.

Memorials may be made to Union Ridge United Church of Christ.

Mr. David L. Kelly Jr.

RAMSEUR - Mr. David Leon "D.J." Kelly Jr., 18, of Ramseur died Tuesday, May 19, 1998, at Randolph Hospital of injuries received in a motorcycle accident.

He was the son of Mr. David Kelly Sr. and Mrs. Brenda Patterson Kelly who survive. He was a graduating senior at Eastern Randolph High School, class of 1998 in Ramseur. He attended the Church of God of Prophecy in Liberty.

Survivors other than his parents of the home include two sisters, Ms. Kimesha Kelly and O'Kema Kelly, both of the home; paternal grandparents, Ms. Eloise G. Kelly of Albemarle and Mr. Leonard Kelly of Baltimore; great-grandmother, Ms. Blanche Johnson of Ramseur.

The funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Saturday at the Church of God of Prophecy. Burial will be in Chatham Memorial Park in Siler City.

Knotts and Son Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Joseph Pyrtle

ASHEBORO - Mr. Joseph Reid Pyrtle, 78, of 1184 Patricia Drive, Pleasant Garden, died Friday, May 22, 1998, at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital in Greensboro.

A native of Forsyth County, he was the husband of Mrs. Lola Mae Pyrtle, who survives. He was a Realtor and a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He was a Primitive Baptist.

Survivors other than his wife include a daughter, Ms. Brenda Macon of Burlington; two sons, Mr. Randy Pyrtle and Mr. Frankie Pyrtle, both of Burlington; two stepdaughters, Ms. Anne Owen and Ms. Diane Harvey, both of Richmond, Va.; a brother, Mr. Vestal Pyrtle of Asheboro; five sisters, Ms. Mary Zimmerman of St. Petersburg, Fla., Ms. Irene Dickens of Asheboro, Ms. Lela Littleton of Cheverly, Md., and Ms. Roxie Hall and Ms. Gloria Staubs, both of Denton; five grandchildren and eight step grandchildren.

A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Rock Hill Primitive Baptist Church cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Rock Hill Primitive Baptist Church, 2437 Old Farmer Road, Asheboro, N.C. 27203; or to Hospice of Randolph, P.O. Box 9, Asheboro, N.C. 27204-009.

Mr. James H. Williams

BURLINGTON - Mr. James H. "Chetta" Williams, 63, of 130 S. Broad St., died at 7:24 p.m. Thursday, May 21, 1998, at Alamance Regional Medical Center after several years of failing health.

A native of Chatham County, he was the husband of Mrs. Ruthie Lee Williams, who survives, and the son of Mr. Robert L. Williams and Mrs. Ethel Dark Williams Benton, both deceased. He was a former employee of Star Foods Company and was a U.S. Army veteran. He was a member of First Baptist Church on Apple Street.

Survivors other than his wife of the home include three daughters, Miss Rejean Williams of Chapel Hill, and Miss Cheryl Williams and Miss Lynn Williams, both of Burlington; a son, Mr. Gerald Wade of Burlington; a sister, Mrs. Margaret Maxine Haith of Burlington; six brothers, Mr. Charlie Dark of Temple Hill, Md., Mr. Robert Williams of Washington, D.C., Mr. Carl Benton of Greensboro, and Mr. Emmitt Benton, Mr. Marvin Benton and Mr. Cleother Benton, all of Burlington; and five grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at First Baptist Church on Apple Street by Dr. Richard W. Styles, pastor. The body will be placed in the church one hour before the service. Burial will be in North Lawn Cemetery.

The family will be at Hargett and Bryant Funeral Home from 5 to 6 Sunday evening, and at ohter times at the home.

Mrs. Ora Mae Grove

BURLINGTON - Mrs. Ora Mae Grantham Grove, 80, of 217 Tremont Drive, died at 8:05 a.m. Friday, May 22, 1998, at White Oak Manor.
