Mrs. Mallie H. Morris
SNOW CAMP - Mrs. Mallie Harris Morris, 88, of 3190 Morris Trail, died at 2:20 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 22, 1998, at Sunrise of the Triad Nursing Home in High Point after three years of failing health, one month critical.
A native of Person County, she was the wife of the late Mr. Willie Greenwood Morris, and the daughter of Mr. Weldon Harris and Mrs. Elizabeth C. Harris, both deceased. She was a homemaker and a member of Kingdom Hall of the Jehovah’s Witnesses in Liberty.
Survivors include four sons, Mr. Robert Morris and Mr. David Morris, both of Liberty, and Mr. Jerry “Pate” Morris and Mr. Larry Morris, both of Snow Camp; 12 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two sons, Mr. William G. “Bill” Morris and Mr. Douglas M. Morris, both deceased.
A memorial service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Saturday at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses by Elder John McCullouch.
The family will be at McClure Funeral Home in Graham from 7 to 9 Friday evening and at other times at the home.

Mr. Johnson Hampton
WINSTON-SALEM - Mr. Johnson Cliff Hampton, 94, of 1516 Old Town Road, died Wednesday, Sept. 23, 1998, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home.
Born July 8, 1904, in Davidson County, he was the husband for 52 years to Mrs. Mary Ellen Cooper Hampton, who died in 1977, and the son of Mr. John Wade Hampton and Mrs. Lillie Weisner Hampton, both deceased. He spent his early life farming and was a member of the National Guard. He was a long-time member of the Knights of Pythios Lodge No.41. He was a member of College Park Baptist Church and was a volunteer for Crisis Control Ministry. He worked for United Automotive Service for a number of years and was a partner of H&S Motor Tune-Up Service. He was a charter and life member of the local chapter of the Independent Garage Owners.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Herbert (Fleta Hampton) Anderson Carmen of Burlington; four sisters, Mrs. Perry Hampton Thomas and Mrs. Louise Hampton Thomas, both of Winston-Salem, Mrs. Cromer (Gladys Hampton) Hill of Lexington and Mrs. Grace Hampton Penland of Icard; three grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at College Park Baptist Church by Dr. Charles Edwards. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will be in Forstyh Memorial Park.
The family will be at Vogler and Sons Reynolda Chapter from 7 to 9 this evening.

Mr. Charlie A. Haynes
MEBANE - Mr. Charlie Allen Hayes, 80, of 1240 S. Fifth St., died Wednesday, Sept. 23, 1998, at Duke University Medical Center in Durham after an illness of one week.
McClure Funeral Home n Mebane is in charge of arrangements, which are incomplete.

Mr. George Pickett Jr.
CARY - Mr. George E. Pickett Jr., 71, of Cary, died Saturday, September 19, 1998, at his home after an illness.
A native of Raleigh, he was the husband of 46 years to Mrs. Joan Pickett, who survives, and the son of Mrs. Queoga W. Pickett, who survives, and the late Col. George E. Pickett. He was a 1945 graduate of Broughton High School, where he was a three-sport letterman. He attended N.C. State University, where he played basketball for Everett Case from 1948 to 1950. He was also an outstanding track star with the Wolfpack and held the high jump record at NCSU until 1971. He was a member of Sigma Nu Fraternity.
After graduating from NCSU in 1951, he was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Infantry. He served in the Korean War, where he earned the Combat Infantry Badge. He was also a graduate of the Airborne School in Fort Benning. After his discharge in 1954, he received a master’s degree from Columbia University. He was named head basketball coach at Newberry College, where he was named the 1958 Coach of the Year in South Carolina. He served as an assistant basketball coach at the Citadel.
He returned to Raleigh in 1959 and joined the N.C. State basketball staff as an assistant coach under Everett Case. He left coaching in 1962 to start his own business, George E. Pickett Jr. and Associates. He grew the business from a solo independent salesman to an incorporated, multi-person agency that specializes in electrical products sold through the electrical wholesalers in the Carolinas and Virginia. He was a longtime active member of the National Electrical Manufacturer’s Representatives Association and the Manufacturer’s Agent National Association, where he served on the Executive Committee of the Board of Directors. He received numerous outstanding sales awards over his 36-year sales career. He retired in September 1997.
Survivors other than his wife and mother of Raleigh include a daughter, Mrs. Andy (Cathy Pickett) Lamb of Burlington; two sons, Mr. Howard Pickett of Cary and Mr. Donnie Pickett of Winston-Salem; a brother, Mr. J. Daniel Pickett of Raleigh; and four grandchildren.

Ms. Elizabeth May
NORFOLK, Va. - Mrs. Frances Elizabeth “Beth” Moser May, 51, of 1268 W. Oceanview Drive, died Friday, Sept. 18, 1998, at Virginia Beach Hospital in Virginia Beach, Va.

Andrew G. Phipps
HARVEST, Ala. - Andrew Gray Phipps, 3, of Harvest died Thursday, Sept. 17, 1998, in Montgomery, Ala.
Survivors include his parents, Mr. Michael A. Phipps and Mrs. Teri Phipps of Harvest; a brother, Zachary Allen Phipps of Harvest; paternal grandmother, Ms. Ruth Anne Phipps of Crumpler; and maternal grandparents, Mr. Donald Loyd and Mrs. Edna Loyd of Elon College.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at University Baptist Church by Dr. Dan Summerlin and the Rev. Manual Williams. Burial will be in Hunstville Memory Gardens.
Memorials may be made to Father Walters Center for Handicapped Children, 2815 Forbes Road, Montgomery, Ala., 36110.

Mr. Richard Cates
GRAHAM - Mr. Richard Caswell Cates, 74, 2369 Swepsonville Road, died at 1 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 17, 1998, at his home after two years of failing health.
A native of Port Eustis, Va., he was the husband of Mrs. Mary Freeze Cates, who survives, and the son of Mr. Frank G. Cates and Mrs. Annie Jacks Cates, both deceased. He was retired from Western Electric and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was a Baptist.
Survivors other than his wife of the home include a daughter, Mrs. Lillian Turner of Burlington; two sons, Mr. Alan Cates of Graham and Mr. Steven Cates of Burlington; and four brothers, Mr. Charles E. Cates and Mr. Lee Cates, both of Burlington, Mr. Grant Cates of Graham and Mr. Bill Cates of Sevierville, Tenn.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at McClure Funeral Home Chapel in Graham by the Rev. Steven Pruitt, pastor of Open Bible Baptist Church. Entombment will be in Alamance Memorial Park Mausoleum.
The family will be at McClure Funeral Home in Graham from 7 to 9 this evening, and at other times at the home.

Mr. J.V. Holt Jr.
BURLIGNTON - Mr. Joseph Verchie “Joe” Holt Jr., 74, of 202 S. Ireland St., died at 7:45 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 16, 1998, at the Hospice Home.
A native of Alamance County, he was the husband of the late Mrs. Jane Dunlap Holt, and the son of Mr. Joseph Verchie Holt Sr. and Mrs. Sadie Linens Holt, both deceased. He was a U.S. Army veteran and was retired from Baby Needs Inc.
Survivors include a daughter, Ms. Cindy Holt of Burlington; two sons, Mr. Joe Holt III of Graham and Mr. Tim Holt of Burlington; two sisters, Mrs. Herman (Beulah) Flynt of Asheboro and Mrs. Richard (Joann) Belote of Norfolk, Va.; and four grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at McClure Funeral Home Chapel in Burlington by Dr. Donald Carter, pastor of Baptist Temple. Burial will be in Pine Hill Cemetery.
The family will be at McClure Funeral Home in Burlington from 7 to 9 this evening.

Mr. Albert E. Smith
LIBERTY - Mr. Albert E. Smith, 84, of 3828 W. Greensboro-Chapel Hill Road, died Wednesday evening, Sept. 16, 1998, at Alamance Regional Medical Center in Burlington.
A native of Randolph County, he was the husband of Mrs. Cora (Topsey) Hinshaw Smith of the home. He was the owner and operator of Smith Concrete Co. in Liberty. He was a charter member and served on the board of directors of Liberty Savings and Loan for 25 years. He was a member of Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church.
Survivors other than his wife include two daughters, Mrs. Jesse (Joel) Cole and Mrs. Larry (Margo) Simmons, both of Liberty; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church in Kimesville by Dr. Charles Adams and the Rev. Lynn Cash. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will be at Loflin Funeral Home in Liberty from 7 to 9 Friday evening, and at other times at the home.

Mr. George Fogleman
BURLINGTON - Mr. George S. “Junior” Fogleman, 76, of 2275 Lee Drive, died at 12:03 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 17, 1998, at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill after several years of failing health, five days critical.
A native of Alamance County, he was the husband of Mrs. Hilda D. Fogleman, who survives, and the son of Mr. George S. Fogleman and Mrs. Nina Fogleman, both deceased. He was a former employee of General Electric Corp. and was a World War II veteran. He was a member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church.
Survivors other than his wife of the home include a sister, Mrs. Lucille Hodgin of Burlington; a grandchild; and a great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by a son, Mr. Jimmie Lee Waters; and two sisters, Mrs. Peggy Byrd and Mrs. Vivian Robertson.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Rich and Thompson Chapel in Burlington by the Rev. Skip Williams, pastor of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Pine Hill Cemetery.
The family will be at Rich and Thompson Mortuary in Burlington from 1 to 2 Saturday afternoon, and at other times at the home.
Memorials may be made to St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, 609 Trail Two, Burlington, N.C. 27215.

Mrs. Mary Richardson
YANCEYVILLE - Mrs. Mary Draper Richardson, 88, of 158 Hooper Ave., died Thursday, Sept. 17, 1998, at the Brian Center after several months of failing health.
A native of Henry County, Va., she was the wife of Mr. Howard P. Richardson, who died in 1975, and the daughter of Mr. William Peyton Draper and Mrs. Rosa Southard Draper, both deceased. She attended Martinsville High School in Martinsville, Va., and was a retired hair dresser. She was a member of Yanceyville Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include two sisters, Ms. Edna D. Draper of Martinsville and Ms. Lillie D. Carr of Springfield, Mo.; two brothers, Mr. Connie Draper of Bassett, Va., and Mr. Cecil Draper of Martinsville.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Ms. Lillie Mae Taylor and Ms. Tencie Draper, and a brother, Mr. William Penn Draper.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Yanceyville Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Marie Reed, pastor. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will be at Hooper Funeral Home from 7 to 8:30 Saturday evening.

Mr. George H. Long
ROCKVILLE, Md. - Mr. George H. Long, 57, of 609 N. Stone Ave., died at 9:20 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 15, 1998, in Rockville after a sudden illness.
A native of Graham, he was the son of Mr. Harden Long Sr., and Mrs. Luna Graves Long, both deceased. He was a U.S. Government employee.
Survivors include a daughter, Miss Ainee Long of Maryland; a son, Mr. Anthony Walker of Burlington; two sisters, Mrs. Dorothy L. Wilson of Burlington and Mrs. Rebecca L. Bigelow of Washington, D.C.; four brothers, Mr. Frank M. Long, Mr. James Long and Mr. William Earl Long, all of Burlington, and Mr. Harden Long of Washington, D.C.; and two grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Mr. Kirk Long and Mr. John Long.
A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Snowden Funeral Home in Rockville.
