Mr. John W. Finley
BURLINGTON - Mr. John Wesley Finley, 80, of 2716 Mebane Oaks Road, Mebane, died Saturday, March 20, 1999, at Alamance Regional Medical Center after one year of failing health, one week critical. He was formerly of 214 N. Cobb Ave., Burlington.
A native of Cross City, Fla., he was the husband of the late Mrs. Ruth Noble Finley and the son of Mr. Adam James Finley and Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Tyre Finley, both deceased. He was retired from Associated Transport and Thurston Motor Lines. He was a veteran of World War II, a prisoner of war and a recipient of the Purple Heart. He was a member of the American Legion Post 63. He was a volunteer with Meals on Wheels and Hospice. He also worked with the Alamance-Orange Prison Ministries, where he served as a sponsor and a member of the executive board. He was a volunteer with the Good Shepherd Community Kitchen and with the Gideons-Graham Camp. He won the Governor’s Volunteer of the Year award and was a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps from 1935 to 1938.
He was a member of Emmanuel United Methodist Church, where he taught the Lou Nicks Sunday School Class for 43 years. He was a Methodist lay speaker and served on the administrative board. He also served on the Council of Ministries, the Methodist Men and the 39 and Holding Club.
Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Jay (Beverly) Wilson of Mebane and Ms. Becky Finley of Burlington; a son, Mr. Bobby G. Finley of Graham; two sisters, Mrs. Bertha Guillet of Hendersonville and Mrs. Ruth Blount of Oxford, Ga.; a brother, Mr. Ed Finley of Ripley, Ohio; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Mrs. Rose Jackson and Mrs. Lizzie McColl; and two brothers, Mr. Buford Finley and Mr. David Finley.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. today at Emmanuel United Methodist Church by the Rev. James Hobbs, pastor, and the Rev. Jesse Staton, pastor of Hebron United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Pine Hill Cemetery.
The family will be at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Beverly Wilson, 2716 Mebane Oaks Road, Mebane.

Mrs. Marjorie B. Blue
BURLINGTON - Mrs. Marjorie Ball Blue, 77, of 109 Neese Drive, died at 12:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 20, 1998, at Alamance Regional Medical Center after a critical illness of 10 days.
A native of York County, S.C., she was the wife of Mr. Herman H. Blue, who survives, and the daughter of Mr. William Austin Ball and Mrs. Kathryn Beach Ball, both deceased. She was a retired certified professional secretary and was a former member of the National Secretaries Association and was former president of the Burlington Chapter. She was a member of Front Street United Methodist Church.
Survivors other than her husband include four sisters, Mrs. Harriet Hegeman of Claverack, N.Y., Mrs. Sarah Green of Fountain, Colo., Mrs. Dorothy Snotherly of Burlington and Mrs. Eleanor Sikes of Sanford; and a brother, Mr. David B. Ball of Asheville.
The funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday at Front Street United Methodist Church by Dr. William C. Simpson Jr., pastor, the Rev. Duke Lackey, associate pastor, and Dr. G. Robert McKenzie Jr., pastor emeritus. Burial will be in Pine Hill Cemetery.
The family will be at the John Wesley Room of Front Street United Methodist Church one hour before the service, and at other times at the home.
Memorials may be made to Habitat for Humanity for Alamance County, 317 E. Sixth St., Burlington, N.C. 27215.

Mr. Coy L. Goodman
BURLINGTON - Mr. Coy L. Goodman, 84, of 1517 Bethel Methodist Church Road, died at 5:20 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 19, 1998, at his home.
A native of Alamance County, he was the husband for 65 years to Mrs. Frances Fesperman Goodman, who survives, and the son of Mr. Edgar Goodman and Mrs. Virgie Andrews Goodman, both deceased. He was a retired supervisor with Copland Fabrics. He was a former member of the Burlington Moose Lodge, a class president and 1954 graduate of Burlington Business College. He was a member of Faith United Methodist Church.
Survivors other than his wife of the home include two daughters, Mrs. Gene (Adelaide) Stokes of Darlington, S.C., and Mrs. Mike (Diane) Shoffner of Gibsonville; a sister, Mrs. Woodrow (Dorothy) Tickle of Gibsonville; and four grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two sons, Mr. Bobby Tim Goodman and Mr. Coy Lee Goodman Jr.; and a sister, Mrs. Eva Dell Loy.
A graveside service will be conducted at 3 p.m. today at Gibsonville City cemetery by the Rev. Richard A. Rhoades, pastor of Frieden’s Lutheran Church, and the Rev. Scott Watford, pastor of Faith United Methodist Church.
The family will be at Rich and Thompson Mortuary in Burlington from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. today and at other times at the home.
Memorials may be made to Hospice of Alamance-Caswell, P.O. Box 2122, Burlington, N.C. 27216-2122.

Mrs. Lelia C. Ford
BURLINGTON - Mrs. Lelia Clemmer Ford, 73, of 238 N.C. 87 North, died at 11:30 a.m. Friday, Nov. 20, 1998, at Twin Lakes Center.
A native of Alamance County, she was the wife of Mr. L. Glenn Ford, who survives, and the daughter of Mr. Colt E. Clemmer and Mrs. Eva Christman Clemmer, both deceased. She was a retired registered nurse and a member of Macedonia Lutheran Church.
Survivors other than her husband of the home include a daughter, Mrs. Chris Turner of Alamance; two sons, the Rev. Craven G. Ford of Lexington and Mr. Lee C. Ford of Julian; and four grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Mr. Lewis C. Clemmer Sr.
The funeral will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Macedonia Lutheran Church by the Rev. Raymond A. Petrea, pastor. Burial will be in Alamance Memorial Park.
The family will be at the Macedonia Lutheran Church parlor one hour before the service.

Dr. Brooks Cates
BURLINGTON - Dr. Brooks Cates died Thursday, Nov. 19, 1998, at Alamance Regional Medical Center.
A native of Faison, he was the husband of Mrs. Nicole Bonhomme Cates, who survives, and the son of Mrs. Addis P. Cates, who survives. He came to Elon in 1964 and was one of the most senior faculty members. In 1985, he was named assistant director of academic advertising and began developing the institutional research program. He received a bachelor’s degree and doctorate from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a master’s degree from East Carolina University.
Survivors other than his wife of Burlington and mother of Faison include two sons, Mr. Ronan Cates of Raleigh and Mr. Bernard Cates of Newnan, Ga.; two brothers, Mr. Curtiss Cates of Hope Mills and Mr. Tad Cates of Parkton; and four grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at Elon College Community Church. Burial will be in Phillips Chapel United Methodist Church cemetery.
The family will be at Rich and Thompson Mortuary in Burlington from 7 to 9 Sunday evening.
Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or Elon College.

Mr. Horace Carew
GREENSBORO - Mr. Horace Carew of 2306 Trade St., died Wednesday, Nov. 18, 1998, at his home after a long illness.
A native of Trinidad, West Indies, he was the husband of Mrs. Katherine Willis Carew, who survives, and the son of Mr. Nathaniel Carew and Mrs. Gertina Carew, both deceased. He was a carpenter.
Survivors other than his wife of the home include a son, Mr. Joseph Carew of Brooklyn, N.Y.; four sisters, Ms. Hilda Daniel, Ms. Violet Peterson, Ms. Elsie Aldrerdous and Ms. Thelma Herbert, all of Brooklyn; and three brothers, Mr. Hubert Carew of Bronx, N.Y., Mr. Boysie Carew of Queens, N.Y., and Mr. Aubrey Carew of Trinidad.
The funeral will be conducted at 3:30 p.m. today at Sharpe Memorial Chapel in Burlington by the Rev. Gary Johnson, pastor of New Birth Baptist Church, and the Rev. Lucius Sellars. Burial will be in Sweet Gum Grove cemetery.
The family will be at Sharpe Memorial Chapel 30 minutes before the service.

Mrs. Nona W. Gregory
BURLINGTON - Mrs. Nona Fa Wilmoth Gregory, 81, of Burlington, died Friday, Nov. 20, 1998, at Alamance Health Care Center in Burlington.
She was the wife of the late Mr. Lewis Henry Gregory, and the daugher of Mr. Elige Danuial Wilmoth and Mrs. Rosa Lillie Wilson Wilmoth, both deceased. She and her husband were retired Person County farmers and moved to Burlington in 1971. She was a member of Northside Baptist Church in Burlington and a former member of Antioch Baptist Church in Timberlake.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Terrell King (Colleen) Duncan of Burlington; two sisters, Ms. Mabel Allen and Ms. Gracie Chandler, both of Timberlake; three grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by sister, Ms. Fannie Mae McBroom.
The funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday at Brooks and White Chapel by Dr. J. Howard Silver and the Rev. Bruce A. Brown. Burial will be in Person Memorial Cemetery.
The family will be at Brooks and White Funeral Home in Roxboro from 7 to 8:30 this evening, and at other times at the home of the daughter, 2534 Oakcrest Court, Burlington.

Mrs. Enor Stainback
BURLINGTON - Mrs. Enor Lea Aldridge Stainback, 86, a former residnet of 10053 N.C. 62 North, died at 6:05 a.m. Friday, Nov. 20, 1998, at White Oak Manor after a long illness.
A native of Caswell County, she was the wife of the late Mr. Charlie Burnard Stainback, and the daughter of Mr. John Albert Aldridge and Mrs. Janie Vaughn Aldridge, both deceased. She was a homemaker and a member of Bush Arbor Primitive Baptist Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Gordon (Evelyn) McKinney of Hendersonville and Mrs. Harold (Joyce) Rudd of Burlington; and four grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one son, Mr. Charlie Edward “Pete” Stainback; and one grandchild.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Bush Arbor Primitive Baptist Church by Elder Wallis Smith. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will be at McClure Funeral Home in Burlington from 7 to 9 this evening, and at other times at the home.

Mrs. Mary Thompson
dies at age 100
GRAHAM - Mrs. Mary Savannah Gwynn Thompson, 100, of 5523 Swepsonville-Saxapahaw Road, died at 10:15 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 17, 1999, at Alamance Regional Medical Center after an illness of several months.
A native of Alamance County, she was the wife of the late Mr. Clarence Thompson and the daughter of the late Mrs. Artelia Gwynn Thompson. She was a caregiver for foster children. She was a long-standing member of Parrish Chapel United Church of Christ, where she formerly served as treasurer of the Usher Board and was a member of the Deaconess Board, the Senior Choir, the Missionary Circle and the Trustee Board.
Survivors include two daughters, Miss Joan Thompson of Graham and Mrs. Georgia Parrish of the home; a son, Mr. Leroy Graves of the home; two foster sons, Mr. Hubert Graves and Mr. “Phamm” Robinson, both of Burlington; a sister, Mrs. Helen James of Graham; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Saturday at Parrish Chapel United Church of Christ by the Rev. Otis Wiley, pastor, and the Rev. Albert Morrow. Burial will be in Farr-Morr Cemetery.
The family will be at the church one hour before the service, and at other times at the home.
Hargett and Bryant Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Helen McPherson
BURLINGTON - Mrs. Helen King McPherson, 71, of 512 Wentworth St., Reidsville, died at 11:50 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 18, 1999, at her home after an illness of one year.
A native of Pudacah, Ky., she was the wife of the late Mr. Frank McPherson and the daughter of Mr. Harrison King and Mrs. Daisy Heath King, both deceased. She was a caregiver and provided foster home care for children and the elderly. She was a member of Haven Pentecostal Holiness Church in Henderson, Ky., where she was active in the Bus Ministry, was a Sunday school teacher and usher, a choir member and a member of the King Sisters Trio.
Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Charlotte Watson of Burlington and Mrs. Debbie Kennon of Reidsville; four sons, Mr. Jackie Jones of Belding, Mich., Mr. Jasper Smith Jr. of Aarat, Va., Mr. Rickie Smith of Kimesville and Mr. Randy Smith of Reidsville; a brother, Mr. James Earl King of South Korea; 13 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at United Pentecostal Holiness Church in Burlington by the Rev. Kenny Godair and the Rev. Willard Clemment. Entombment will be in Alamance Memorial Park Mausoleum.
The family will be at Rich and Thompson Mortuary in Burlington from 6 to 8 Saturday evening and at other times at the home.
