Mrs. Katie M. Jeffries

BURLINGTON - Mrs. Katie Mae Jeffries, 88, of 2732 N.C. 49 North, died Monday, Oct. 6, 1997, at Alamance Regional Medical Center after an illness of five days.

A native of Caswell County, she was the wife of the late Mr. Leonard M. Jeffries. She was a member of Martin's Chapel Baptist Church.

Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Aljean J. Davis and Mrs. Betty J. Dixon, both of Burlington; a son, Mr. Thaddies Leonard Jeffries of Burlington; two sisters, Mrs. Coleen Slade of Glen Raven and Mrs. Gertharine Watlington of Reidsville; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. today at Martin's Chapel Baptist Church by the Rev. Ronnie Allen, the Rev. Ronald Brooks and Elder Darius P. Dixon. The body will be placed in the church one hour before the service. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The family will be at Martin's Chapel Baptist Church 30 minutes before the service and at other times at the home of Mr. Terry H. Dixon, 2572 McRay Road, Burlington.

Hargett and Bryant Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. John L. Skeen

ARCHDALE - Mr. John Lee Skeen, 77, of 226 Aldridge Road, died Monday, Oct. 6, 1997, at the North Carolina Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem after one year of failing health.

Born March 23, 1920, in Randolph County, he was the husband of Mrs. Doris Bean Skeen, who survives, and the son of Mr. Enos D. Skeen and Mrs. Winnie Briles Skeen, both deceased. A lifelong resident of Randolph County, he was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 9899. He was retired from Kay-Lynn Furniture Company and was a member of Mount Gilead United Methodist Church.

Survivors other than his wife of the home include a daughter, Mrs. Jennings (Patrice) Bryan III of Burlington; a son, Mr. Rodney Kent Skeen of Reidsville; a brother, Mr. Paul Charles Skeen of Archdale; three sisters, Mrs. Radie Kennedy of Trinity, Mrs. Bertie Nelson and Mrs. Dessie Coggins, both of Sophia; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at Cumby Archdale Chapel by the Rev. Garry Gates and the Rev. Linda Faltin. Burial will be in Guilford Memorial Park.

The family will be at Cumby Mortuary in Archdale from 6 to 7:30 this evening.

Memorials may be made to New Covenant Lutheran Church, 10306 N. Main St., Archdale, N.C. 27263.

Mr. J. Haywood Cobb

RUFFIN - Mr. Julius Haywood Cobb, 68, of 3171 Ashland Road, died Monday, Oct. 6, 1997, at his home after several years of failing health.

A native of Caswell County, he was the husband of Mrs. Nancy Totten Cobb, who survives, and the son of Mr. Julius Cobb and Mrs. Laura Somers Cobb, both deceased. He attended Caswell County Schools. He was a retired tobacco auctioneer and farmer. He was a member of Lively Stones Baptist Church.

Survivors other than his wife of the home include four daughters, Ms. Peggy Worley of Yanceyville, Ms. Wendy Tickle, Ms. Susan McKinney and Ms. Lisa Walker, all of Reidsville; four sons, Mr. Ronnie Cobb, Mr. Guy Cobb, Mr. Ricky Cobb and Mr. Rocky Cobb, all of Ruffin; four sisters, Ms. Nannie C. Page and Ms. Warnell C. Tatum, both of Ruffin, Ms. Edna C. Willett of Sanford and Ms. Hazel C. Chilton of Reidsville; and 12 grandchildren.

A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday in Pleasant Grove Primitive Baptist Church by the Rev. Michael Kent and the Rev. Richard DeHart.

The family will be at Hooper Funeral Home in Yanceyville from 7 to 8:30 this evening.

Mr. Robert S.I. Martin

BURLINGTON - Mr. Robert S. I. Martin, 62, of 1711 Whitsett St., Apt. C-8 died at 3:40 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 7, 1997, at his home Rich and Thompson Mortuary in Burlington is in charge of arrangements, which are incomplete.

Mrs. Emma W. Martin

BURLINGTON - Mrs. Emma Jean Willis Martin of 1729 Preston St. died Sunday, Oct. 5, 1997, at her home.

A native of Alamance County, she was the wife of Mr. Jason G. Martin, who survives, and the daughter of Mr. Robert Wentford Willis and Mrs. Emma Tate Willis, both deceased. She was a clerk with Bell Atlantic in Washington, D.C. She was a member of Zion Hill Baptist Church of Washington, D.C., where she was president of the pastor's aides and was church clerk before moving to Burlington.

Survivors other than her husband of the home include a son, Mr. Robert Oliver Martin of the home; a daughter, Miss Florence Olivia Martin of the home; two brothers, Mr. Robert Wentford Willis Jr. of Burlington and Mr. Eddie Lee Willis of Jackson; two sisters, Mrs. Jean Willis Poteat of Green Level and Ms. Joyce E. Willis of Burlington.

The funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Friday at Morgantown Baptist Church by the Rev. Steven Clay, pastor, and the Rev. Lester James Sr., pastor of Zion Hill Baptist Church. Burial will be in North Lawn Cemetery.

The family will be at Morgantown Baptist Church from 7 to 8 Thursday evening, and at other times at the home.

Sharpe Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Navella T. Terrell

BURLINGTON - Mrs. Navella Torain Terrell, 92, of 1610-E Morningside Drive, died at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 5, 1997, at her home after a critical illness of several months.

A native of Orange County, she was the wife of the late Mr. James Allen Terrell and the daughter of Mr. Wiley Torain and Mrs. Betty Warren Torain, both deceased. She was a member of Guiding Light Holy Church, where she was a mother of the church.

Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Betty Oakley of the home, Mrs. Corene T. Booker and Mrs. Doris Oakley, both of Burlington; three sons, Mr. Clemon Terrell, Mr. Rudolph Terrell and Mr. Robert Terrell, all of Burlington; two sisters, Mrs. Janet Pitts of Goldsboro and Mrs. Bertha Villines of Cedar Grove; two brothers, Mr. Jule Torain and Mr. Ralph Torain, both of Durham; 19 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and four great-great grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at Guiding Light Holy Church in Graham by Elder George Mitchell. The body will be placed in the church one hour before the service. Burial will be in North Lawn Cemetery.

The family will be at Hargett and Bryant Funeral Home from 6 to 7 this evening and at other times at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Corene T. Booker, 2562 Albert Jeffries Road, Burlington.

Mr. Wilford J. Hale

McCONNELSVILLE, OHIO - Mr. Wilford J. Hale, 84, of 526 East Bell Ave., died at 8:07 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 5, 1997, at the Bethesda Hospital in Zanesville, Ohio.

Born Dec. 6, 1912, in Morgan County, Ohio, he was the husband of Mrs. Mary Hinkle Hale, who survives, and the son of Mr. Oscar Hale and Mrs. Mary Smith Hale, both deceased. He was an Air Force veteran of World War II. He was a retired truck driver for Ferro Alloy, where he worked for 30 years. He was a member of Local no. 1512 United Steel Workers of America. He was an associate member of the Buckeye State Sheriff's Association and a Methodist.

Survivors other than his wife include two daughters, Mrs. Roger (Jane) Wallace of McConnelsville and Mrs. Ronald (Barbara) Stanley of Malta, Ohio; two sons, Mr. Carroll Hale of McConnelsville and Mr. James Hale of Burlington; and two grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Ms. Hazel Schmotters and Ms. Marie Cureton.

The funeral will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Miller-Huck Funeral Home by the Rev. Bruce Kent. A full military graveside service will be conducted in Crooksville Cemetery.

The family will be at Miller-Huck Funeral Home in McConnelsville from 2 to 4 this afternoon and 7 to 9 this evening.

Mrs. Myrtle Manning

GIBSONVILLE - Mrs. Myrtle Mae Manning, 75, formerly of Beckley, W.Va., died Saturday, October 4, 1997, at Alamance Regional Medical Center.

Born Nov. 3, 1921, in Lillybrook, W.Va., she was the wife of Mr. Robert L. Manning, who survives, and the daughter of Mr. Oat Jones and Mrs. Maude Dangerfield Jones, both deceased. She was a homemaker and a member of Holly Hill Baptist Church.

Survivors other than her husband of Gibsonville include two daughters, Mrs. Alan (Connie Sue) Swisher of Gibsonville and Mrs. Charlie (Barbara Ann) Kelly of Centreville, Va.; a son, Mr. Robert Ray Manning of St. Paul, Minn.; a sister, Ms. Gerthleen Hall of Beckley; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a grandchild.

The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Memorial Baptist Church in Beckley by the Rev. Tim Roberts. Burial will be in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens.

The family will be at the church one hour before the service.

Calfee Funeral Home in Beckley is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be made to Holly Hill Baptist Church in Burlington.

Mrs. Mildred Brown

WHITSETT - Mrs. Mildred Fay White Brown, 77, of 523 N.C. 100, died at 3:30 a.m. Monday, Oct. 6, 1997, at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital after an illness of two weeks.

A native of Bessemer City, she was the wife of Mr. Noah Carlie Brown, who survives, and the daughter of Mr. John William White and Mrs. Hester Self White, both deceased. She was a homemaker.

Survivors other than her husband of the home include a sister, Mrs. Thelma W. McCall of Burlington.

The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Lowe Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. W.D. Allison, pastor of Central Baptist Church of Mebane. Burial will be in Alamance Memorial Park.

The family will be at Lowe Funeral Home from 7 to 9 this evening and at other times at the home.

Mr. Carlton R. Best

BOLIVIA - Mr. Carlton Ray 'Bo' Best, 36, of 601 Brunswick St. died Saturday, Oct. 4, 1997, at home.

A Wake County native, he was a self-employed building contractor. He was the son of Mr. Charles M. Best and Mrs. Rachel Thompson Best, who both survive.

Survivors other than his mother of Efland and father of Mebane include two sisters, Ms. Betsy Ann Best of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and Mrs. Sarah Best Gibson of Efland; and one brother, Mr. Charles Michael 'Mike' Best of Butner.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Bethlehem Presbyterian Church in Orange County by the Rev. Randy Welford and Mr. Al Jones. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The body will remain at Rich & Thompson Funeral Home in Graham until being taken to the church for the service. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 this evening night at Rich and Thompson Funeral Home and at other times at the home of the mother, Mrs. Rachel Thompson Best, Hylen Hills, 6100 Bradshaw Quarry Road, Efland.

Memorials may be made to the Sen Cland Alumni Association, 1390 S. 16th St., Wilmington, N.C. 28401.
