Mrs. Millie M. Crouch
NEWBERRY, S.C. - Mrs. Millie Slaughter Moore Crouch, 93, of White Oak Manor in Newberry, died Saturday, Feb. 7, 1998.
A native of Allensville, she was the wife of the late Mr. W. David Crouch, and the daughter of Mr. Augusta Slaughter and Mrs. Lula Hicks Slaughter, both deceased. She was a member of Pioneer Baptist Church.
Survivors include three daughters, Ms. Ola Oakley of Yanceyville, Ms. Christine M. Stephens and Ms. Barbara Jean Wilborn, both of Asheboro; two sons, Mr. C.V. 'Billy' Moore of Lakeland, Fla., and Mr. Bennie T. Moore of Danville, Va.; a stepdaughter, Ms. Mary Farmer of Havelock; three stepsons, Mr. Charles S. Crouch of Bremerton, Wash., Mr. Robert R. Crouch and Mr. Donald R. Crouch, both of Chicago; five sisters, Ms. Anna Wynn of Mebane, Ms. Onnie Denson of Eden, Ms. Mary Weaver and Ms. Betty Wagoner, both of Burlington, and Ms. Laura Thompson of Snow Camp; two brothers, Mr. Tommy Slaughter of Mebane and Mr. Obie Slaughter of Durham; several grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two sons, Mr. Earl Moore and Mr. Dallas Moore.
The funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Monday at Whitaker Funeral Home. Burial will be in Baxter Cemetery.
The family will be at Whitaker Funeral Home from 3 to 4:30 this afternoon, and at other times at the home of Mr. and Mrs. J.T. Massey, 54 Doe Road, Newberry.

GREENSBORO - Mr. Carson Lee Bennett Sr. of 4303 Golden Rod Drive, died at 5:38 p.m. Friday, Feb. 6, 1998, at Duke University Medical Center.

Mr. Q.G. McCombs
BURLINGTON - Mr. Q.G. 'Mack' McCombs, 92, of 2015 B Colony Apartments, died at 10:03 p.m. Friday, Feb. 6, 1998, at Skilled Nursing Division of Alamance Regional Medical Center, after a short illness.
A native of Salisbury, he was the husband of Mrs. Blanche 'Pat' Dudley McCombs, and the daughter of Mr. Hubert Lee McCombs and Mrs. Margaret Trexler McCombs, both deceased. He was retired from Burlington Industries. He was a member of the N.C. Seniors Golf Association, the Southeastern Senior Golf Association and the World Seniors Golf Association. He won many regular and senior championship tournaments. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Burlington.
Survivors include three sons, Mr. Gilbert McCombs of Dallas, Texas, Mr. John McCombs of Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Mr. Gordon McCombs of Chandler, Ariz.; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by four brothers, Mr. Hoke McCombs, Mr. Leo McCombs, Mr. Gaither McCombs and Mr. J.D. McCombs.
The funeral will be conducted at 10 a.m. Monday at Rich and Thompson Chapel in Burlington by Dr. Craig McMahan, pastor of First Baptist Church of Burlington.
The family will be at Rich and Thompson Mortuary in Burlington from 3 to 4 this afternoon.
Mrs. Betty L. Horner
NEW CASTLE, Va. - Mrs. Betty Lloyd Horner, 68, formerly of Burlington, died Saturday, Feb. 7, 1998.
She was the wife of the late Mr. Jack L. Horner.
Survivors include a son, Mr. Jack Horner; three daughters, Mrs. Bill (Karen) Byrd and Ms. Jerri Horner and Mrs. Randy (Robin) Falls; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Bethel United Methodist Church by the Rev. Charles Ammons and Mr. Jack Ford. Burial will be in Roselawn cemetery in Christiansburg, Va.

Mrs. Betty T. Jennings
WILKESBORO - Mrs. Betty Jean Taylor Jennings, 65, of Sedgefield Circle, died Friday, Feb. 6, 1998, at her home.
Born Sept. 15, 1932, in Lee County, she was the wife of Mr. Neal Jennings, who survives, and the daughter of Mr. B.A. Taylor and Mrs. Sadie Baggett Taylor, both deceased. She worked as a nurse at Wilkes Regional Medical Center and was a member of Wilkesboro Baptist Church.
Survivors other than her husband of the home include two sons, Mr. Robert Neal Jennings Jr. of San Jose, Calif. and Mr. William Andrew Jennings of Lenoir; two sisters, Ms. Elsie Gaines of Goldston and Ms. Faye Fagg of Richmond, Va.; and four grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at Wilkesboro Baptist Church by the Rev. Alfred E. Andrews Jr. Burial will be in Alamance Memorial Park in Burlington.

Mrs. Bernice E. Lane
GRAHAM - Mrs. Bernice Ellington Lane, 75, of Jonesborough, Tenn., died at 9:15 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 5, 1998, at Greystone Nursing Home in Blountville, Tenn., after several months of failing health.
A native of Alamance County, she was the wife of the late Mr. Odell Lane, and the daughter of Mr. David W. Ellington and Mrs. Etta Cheek Ellington, both deceased. She was a retired federal employee.
Survivors include a sister, Mrs. Edith E. Morrow of Mebane; and three brothers, Mr. Edwin Ellington of Zebulon, Mr. Eugene Ellington of Mebane and Mr. Billy Ellington of Graham.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Ms. Wilma Hopkins; and three brothers, Mr. Harvey Ellington, Mr. Harold Ellington and Mr. Paschal Ellington.

Mrs. Francis Rhodes
GRAHAM - Mrs. Francis Thompson Rhodes, 78, of 405 Ward St., died at 1:49 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 7, 1998, at Alamance Regional Medical Center.
A native of Connecticut, she was the wife of Mr. Harold Rhodes, who survives. She was a retired school teacher and was a member of Graham Presbyterian Church.
Survivors other than her husband of the home include two sons, Mr. Robert J. Rhodes of Cary and Mr. James Rhodes of Cleveland, N.C.; and three grandchildren.

BURLINGTON - Mr. Oscar 'Junior' Cox Jr., 65, of 3117 Altamahaw-Union Ridge Road, died at 10:10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 7, 1998, at his home after nine years of failing health, six months critical.
A native of Randolph County, he was the husband of Mrs. Sudie Murray Cox, who survives, and the son of Mr. Oscar Cox Sr. and Mrs. Augusta Jones Cox. He was a retired farmer and auto mechanic. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War.
Survivors other than his wife of the home include a daughter, Mrs. Deborah Augusta Neal of Beckley, W.Va.; two sons, Mr. Dennis Marshall Cox and Mr. Randy Oscar Cox, both of Burlington; three stepdaughters, Mrs. Gail Branson and Mrs. Sarah Lynn Lunsford, both of Greensboro, and Mrs. Carolyn Jo Ann Wirz of Ocean Springs, Miss.; three sisters, Mrs. Clara Terry and Mrs. Louise Childers, both of Burlington, and Mrs. Melinda Jefferson of Yanceyville; three brothers, Mr. Chester Cox, Mr. Henry Cox and Mr. William Cox, all of Burlington; 15 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Ms. Betty Cox; and a brother, Mr. Roy Cox.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at McClure Funeral Home Chapel in Burlington by the Rev. Bobby Helms, pastor of Graham Baptist Church. Burial will be in Altamahaw Baptist Church cemetery.

Mr. Gary R. Foushee
GRAHAM - Mr. Gary Raymond Foushee, 45, of 6831 N.C. 87 South, died at 7:20 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 5, 1998, at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill after several months of failing health.
A native of Alamance County, he was the son of Mr. Clyde Foushee and Mrs. Beulah Pearson Foushee, who survive. He was employed with the N.C. Department of Motor Vehicles, Inspection Division, for 12 years, and was a former detective with the Chatham County Sheriff's Department for six years. He was a member of Moore's Chapel Baptist Church.
Survivors other than his parents of Graham include a son, Mr. William Holt Foushee of the home; two sisters, Mrs. Patricia 'Pat' Porter and Mrs. Joan Foushee Shoffner, both of Graham; and a brother, Mr. Russell Foushee of Graham.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Ms. Carolyn Foushee Lambe.
The funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday at Moore's Chapel Baptist Church by the Rev. Curtis Oakley. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Mr. Norwood O. Smith
WINSTON-SALEM - Mr. Norwood Otis Smith, 73, died Thursday night, Feb. 5, 1998, at Forsyth Memorial Hospital.
Born May 6, 1924, in Timmonsville, S.C., he was the husband of the late Mrs. Bea Smith, and the son of Mr. George Smith and Mrs. Alice Smith. He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of World War II and was retired from Western Electric. He was a member of Crestwood Baptist Church, where he was a Sunday school teacher, choir member and was a former deacon.
Survivors include a son, Mr. George V. Smith of Lexington; a daughter, Mrs. Ed (Theresa S.) Hooks of Mebane; three sisters, Mrs. Albert (Janie) Butner, Mrs. George (Maxine) Brannock, and Mrs. Norman (Polly) Smoot, all of Winston-Salem; a brother, Mr. George Smith of Winston-Salem; and five grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Ms. Jessie Burcham; and a brother, Mr. Harold Smith.
A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Crestwood Baptist Church by the Rev. Todd Holt.
The family will be at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel from 7 to 9 this evening.

Miss Mary L. Hayes
MEBANE - Miss Mary Lelia Hayes, 90, of 2501 Buckhorn Road, died at 3:15 a.m. Friday, Feb. 6, 1998, at Brookshire Nursing Center in Hillsborough, after an illness of six months.
A native of Orange County, she was the daughter of Mr. Samuel Nelson Hayes and Mrs. Cora Belle Sykes Hayes, both deceased. She graduated from Watts School of Nursing in Durham and worked as a nurse before retiring from the Hospital of Rockerfeller Institute for Medical Research in New York City. She was a member of Chestnut Ridge United Methodist Church.
Survivors include nieces and a nephew.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Mrs. Elevene Hayes Sykes; and two brothers, Mr. Tyson Hayes and Mr. Homer Hayes.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Chestnut Ridge United Methodist Church by the Rev. Jay Bissett, pastor. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Fannie P. Massey
GRAHAM - Mrs. Fannie Pugh Massey, 83, of North Marshall Street, died at 4 a.m. Friday, Feb. 6, 1998, at a Raleigh hospital after a year of failing health.
A native of Alamance County, she was the wife of the late Mr. Herbert Massey, and the daughter of Mr. Thomas F. Pugh and Mrs. Callie Cheek Pugh, both deceased. She was a former member of City Lake Baptist Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Sylvia M. Lewis of Graham; eight grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Ms. Callie Dean Puryear.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Rich and Thompson Chapel in Graham. Burial will be in Graham Memorial Park.
