Mrs. Virginia Nesbitt

BURLINGTON - Mrs. Virginia Dare Burnett Nesbitt, 73, of Orange, N.J., formerly of 2772 Pleasant Grove Union School Road, died Friday, Jan. 23, 1998, at Montgomery General Hospital in Olney, Md.

A native of Alamance County, she was the wife of Mr. William Howard Nesbitt, who died Aug. 27, 1997, and the daughter of Mr. Walter Burnett and Mrs. Connie Parker Burnett, both deceased.

Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Sylvia Nesbitt Jones of Bellevue, Neb.; two sons, Mr. Johnny Nesbitt of Germantown, Md., and Mr. William Glynn Nesbitt of Farmington, Conn.; two brothers, Mr. Herman Burnett of Burlington and Mr. Ellis Burnett of Hyattsville, Md.; a stepmother, Mrs. Hattie L. Burnett of Burlington; two stepsisters, Mrs. Pecolia B. Lee of Kernersville and Mrs. Alfreda B. Watkins of Burlington; a stepbrother, Mr. Waldo Burnett of Burlington; and three grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Mrs. Othelia B. Dixon and Mrs. Connell B. Wade; and five brothers, Mr. Reese Burnett, Mr. Banks Burnett, Mr. Clyde Burnett, Mr. Clarence Burnett and Mr. Roger Burnett.

The funeral was conducted Jan. 26, at Woody Home For Services in Orange.

Mr. George McAllister

RALEIGH - Mr. George W. McAllister, 93, of Mayview Convalescent Center died Sunday, Feb. 1, 1998.

Born Nov. 14, 1904, in Concord, he was the husband of Mrs. Mary Lee McAlllister, who died Jan. 11, 1979, and the son of Mr. John Bickle McAllister and Mrs. Myrtie Foil McAllister, both deceased. He was the retired founder of McAllister Building Supply Company on DuPont Circle. He moved to Raleigh in 1941 and was a building contractor. He was an active member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church on Clark Avenue.

Survivors include a son, Dr. J. Malcolm McAllister of Raleigh; two sisters, Mrs. Genevieve Poplin of Mount Pleasant and Mrs. Nancy Stewart of Cincinnati; a brother, Mr. Larry McAllister of Graham; two grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. today at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, with burial in Oakwood Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Building Maintenance Fund, 2723 Clark Ave., Raleigh, N.C. 27607.

Ms. Peggy F. Smith

GREENSBORO - Ms. Peggy F. Smith, 66, died Monday, Feb. 2, 1998, at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital.

A native of Alamance County, she was the daughter of Mrs. Gladys F. Griffin, who survives.

Survivors other than her mother of Greensboro include a daughter, Mrs. Bobby (Yvonne) Coble of Greensboro; a son, Mr. Stephen McKinney of Madison Heights, Va.; and two grandchildren.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Hanes-Lineberry Funeral Home, Vanstory Street Chapel, with burial in Lakeview Memorial Park.

The family will be at the funeral home from 7 to 9 this evening, and at other times at the home of the daughter.

Mrs. Jessie McKinney

MEBANE - Mrs. Jessie McKinney, 88, of 2333-B Eastwood Lane, formerly of Sidney Avenue, Burlington, died at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Feb. 2, 1998, at her home after several days of failing health.

A native of Blount County, Tenn., she was the daughter of Mr. John Alexander Kerr and Mrs. Dora Lucinda Farr Kerr, both deceased. She was a retired textile employee.

Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Linda M. Wheeler of Mebane; a son, Mr. Charles Ward of Burlington; a half sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Young of Ringwald, Ga.; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at Rich and Thompson Chapel in Burlington by the Rev. James Bowman, pastor of Bethel Baptist Church in Mebane. Burial will be in Pine Hill Cemetery.

The family will at Rich and Thompson Mortuary in Burlington from 6 to 8 evening, and at other times at the home.

Ms. Vernell McClendis

GRAHAM - Ms. Vernell Wiley McClendis of 510 Oakley St., died Saturday, Jan. 31, 1998, at Alamance Regional Medical Center after a long illness.

A native of Alamance County, she was the daughter of Mr. Walter Wiley and Mrs. Margaret Love Wiley, both deceased. She was an assembler with A.O. Smith in Mebane and was a member of Children's Chapel United Church of Christ, where she was a member of the Missionary Society.

Survivors include two sons, Mr. Gregory McClendis of Wilmington and Mr. Todd McClendis of Graham; two brothers, Mr. Curtis Wiley of Baltimore and Mr. Mario Wiley of Burlington; three sisters, Mrs. Shirley Williams and Mrs. Mary Ann Daye, both of Roxboro, and Ms. Tammy Wiley of Burlington; and two grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Children's Chapel United Church of Christ by the Rev. Rodney Foxx, pastor. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The family will be at Sharpe Memorial Chapel from 7 to 8 this evening, and at other times at the home.

Mr. Norman Thomas

GRAHAM - Mr. Norman Woodrow Thomas, 84, of 7363 Whitney Road, died at 2 p.m. Monday, Feb. 2, 1998, at Brookshire Nursing Home in Hillsborough after two years of failing health.

A native of Blue Ridge, Ga., he was the husband of Mrs. Ruth Thacker Thomas, who survives, and the son of Mr. Norman Benton Thomas and Mrs. Rebecka Bradford Thomas, both deceased. He was a retired textile employee and was a member of Moore's Chapel Baptist Church.

Survivors other than his wife of Hillsborough include a daughter, Ms. Deborah T. Wilson of Saxapahaw; a son, Mr. James 'Bo' Thomas of Mebane; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Moore's Chapel cemetery.

The family will be at the home of Mrs. Kim McCoy, 7363 Whitney Road, Graham.

McClure Funeral Home in Mebane is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Maude Y. White

WHITSETT - Mrs. Maude Ann Yates White, 99, of 7130 Gusenbury Road, died Saturday, Jan. 31, 1998, at her home after several years of failing health, four weeks critical.

A native of Tazewell County, Va., she was the wife of the late Mr. William Clarence White Sr., and the daughter of Mr. Elick Yates and Mrs. Ella Whitted Yates, both deceased. She was a homemaker and a member of East Wendover Church of God in Greensboro.

Survivors include one son, Mr. Lloyd B. White of the home; a half sister, Mrs. Arelia Sparks of Cedar Bluff, Va.; 11 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and 11 great-great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted at 8 p.m. this evening at Lowe Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Mark Hurt, pastor of East Wendover Church of God. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Greenhill Memorial Gardens, Claypool Hill, Va.

The family will be at Lowe Funeral Home from 6 to 8 this evening, prior to the service, and at other times at the home.

Mr. Tommy Hood

BURLINGTON - Mr. Waverly Thomas 'Tommy' Hood Jr., 53, of Lot 22, Robbins Mobile Home Park, South Church St., died at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 1, 1998, at his home after one year of failing health and a critical illness of one week.

A native of Alamance County, he was the husband of Mrs. Linda Dillon Hood, who survives, and the son of Mr. Waverly Thomas Hood Sr. and Mrs. Verna Lee Saultz Hood, both deceased. He was retired from Earl Jenkins Paint Company, and was a member of White Dove Baptist Church.

Survivors other than his wife of the home include one daughter, Miss Julie Hood of Burlington; two stepdaughters, Mrs. Lisa Riggs and Mrs. Elaine Michael, both of Burlington; one sister, Mrs. Barbara Jane Rudd of Burlington; and one grandchild.

The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at McClure Funeral Home Chapel in Burlington by the Rev. Harold Profitt Sr., pastor of White Dove Baptist Church, and the Rev. Carlton Wilson. Burial will be in Pine Hill Cemetery.

The family will be at the McClure Funeral Home in Burlington from 7 to 9 Tuesday evening, and at other times at the home.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Alamance-Caswell, P.O. Box 2122, Burlington, N.C. 27216-2122.

Mr. Don E. Boggs Sr.

BURLINGTON - Mr. Don Edward Boggs Sr., 85, of 607 E. Willowbrook Drive, Burlington, died at 11:35 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 31, 1998, at the Skilled Nursing Division of Alamance Regional Medical Center after several years of failing health, two weeks critical.

A native of Alamance County, he was the husband of Mrs. Mary Clapp Leonard Boggs, who survives, and the late Mrs. Mae Cheek Boggs. He was the son of Mr. Willie H. Boggs and Mrs. Luvinie Ward Boggs, both deceased. Before retiring, he was an agent with Western-Southern Life Insurance Co. He was a Navy veteran of World War II. He was a member of Bethany Presbyterian Church and Victory Bible Class at Glen Hope Baptist Church.

Survivors other than his wife of the home include two sons, Mr. Don E. Boggs Jr. and Mr. Joseph R. Boggs, both of Graham; three stepdaughters, Mrs. Charlotte Williams and Mrs. Pam Braxton, both of Graham, and Mrs. Mary Frances Wilkerson of Burlington; a stepson, Mr. Harold D. Leonard of Burlington; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and 12 step grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Rich and Thompson Chapel in Graham by the Rev. Norman Whitney, pastor of Bethany Presbyterian Church. Burial will be in Linwood Cemetery.

The family will be at the Rich and Thompson Funeral Home in Graham from 6 to 8 this evening, and at other times, at the home of a son, Mr. Don Boggs Jr., 529 Wildwood Lane, Graham.

Mrs. Alice Montgomery

BURLINGTON - Mrs. Alice Phillips Montgomery, 75, a resident of Alamance Health Care Center, died at 9:15 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 1, 1998, at the home after one year of failing health, four days critical.

A native of Alamance County, she was the daughter of Mr. Capus Phillips and Mrs. Eugenia Soots Phillips, both deceased. She was a retired hosiery employee.

Survivors include two sons, Mr. William H. 'Bill' Phillips of Graham and Mr. Donald R. Montgomery of Burlington; one sister, Mrs. Ann Daniels of Burlington; two brothers, Mr. Ray Phillips of Salisbury and Mr. Henry Phillips of Burlington; one stepson, Mr. Thurman Montgomery of Elon College; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Rich and Thompson Chapel in Graham by the Rev. Eugene Cates. Burial will be in Graham Memorial Park.

The family will be at the Rich and Thompson Funeral Home in Graham from 7 to 9 Tuesday evening and, at other times, at the home of a son, Mr. Donald R. Montgomery, 606 S. Sellars Mill Road, Burlington.

Mrs. Sarah G. Newlin

HAW RIVER - Mrs. Sarah Greeson Newlin, 74, of 636 Roxboro St., died at 11:15 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 31, 1998, at Alamance Health Care Center after two years of failing health, three weeks critical.

A native of Alamance County, she was the wife of the late Mr. O. Allen Newlin Sr., and the daughter of Mr. Charles Gay Greeson Sr. and Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Anthony Greeson, both deceased. She was a member of the Haw River United Methodist Church, and the Women of the Moose.

Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Jack (Carol) McCauley of Graham; one son, Mr. Al Newlin of Burlington; two sisters, Mrs. Dorothy Boggs of Graham and Mrs. Virginia Poe of Burlington; six brothers, Mr. Jerry Greeson of Graham, Mr. John 'Pete' Greeson and Mr. Scott Greeson, both of Haw River; Mr. Ed Greeson and Mr. Gayle Greeson, both of Mebane, and Mr. Wayne Greeson of Jamestown; and three grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Mr. Charles 'Shot' Greeson.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Rich and Thompson Chapel in Graham by the Rev. Roderic L. Mullen, pastor of Haw River United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Salem United Methodist Church cemetery.

The family will be at the Rich and Thompson Funeral Home in Graham from 7 to 9 this evening, and at other times, at the home of the daughter, Mrs. Jack (Carol) McCauley, 2348 John Thompson Road, Graham.

Memorials may be made to the Haw River United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 460, Haw River, N.C. 27258.

Mr. Alton H. Hewett

BURLINGTON - Mr. Alton 'Al' Henderson Hewett, 69, of 336 N. St. John St., died at 10:15 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 31, 1998, at his home after one year of failing health.

Born Nov. 25, 1928, in New Hanover County, he was the husband of Mrs. June Piper Hewett, who survives, and the son of Mr. Thomas William Hewett and Mrs. Lena Jordan Hewett Allen, both deceased. Before retiring, he was a truck driver for Air Products Inc. for 28 years. He was an Air Force veteran, serving in Germany. He was Presbyterian.

Survivors other than his wife of the home include one daughter, Mrs. Vickie Diane Boggs of Mebane; two sons, Mr. David Alton Hewett of Haw River and Mr. Ricky Alan Hewett of the home; a stepdaughter, Mrs. Judith Brown of Burlington; one stepson, Mr. William Harold Lewis II of Mebane; one brother, Mr. Sherrill Hewett of Burlington; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; three step grandchildren and one stepgreat-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Miss Theresa Dare Hewett.

A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Alamance Memorial Park by Jay Kennett, chaplain of Hospice.

The family will be at the McClure Funeral Home in Graham from 7 to 9 this evening and, at other times, at the home.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Alamance-Caswell, P.O. Box 2122, Burlington, N.C. 27216-2122.
