Mr. Fred C. King

BURLINGTON - Mr. Fred Charles King, 80, of 187-A N. Ireland St., died at 10:45 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 24, 1998, at Alamance Regional Medical Center after a long illness.

A native of Randolph County, he was the son of Mr. Walter J. King and Mrs. Mattie Jones King, both deceased. He was a retired textile employee and was a Baptist.

Survivors include four daughters, Mrs. Pamela Bruner of Graham, Mrs. Lori Posten, Miss Susan King and Miss Wendy King, all of Valdese; a stepdaughter, Mrs. Lillie O'Neal Smith of Asheboro; three sons, Mr. Freddie King of Saxapahaw, Mr. Tommy King of High Point and Mr. Wayne King of Burlington; a brother, Mr. Eugene King of Asheboro; 14 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a stepson, Mr. Harold O'Neal.

The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at Rich and Thompson Chapel in Graham by the Rev. Roger Boggs. Burial will be in Graham Memorial Park.

The family will be at Rich and Thompson Funeral Home in Graham from 6 to 8 this evening.

Mrs. Myrtle L. Matlock

ELON COLLEGE - Mrs. Myrtle Ledbetter Matlock, 85, of 306 W. Haggard Ave., died at 7:50 p.m. Friday, Jan. 23, 1998, at Twin Lakes Nursing Center.

A native of Rockingham County, she was the wife of the late Mr. John William Matlock Jr., and the daughter of Mr. Dennis Oscar Ledbetter and Mrs. Mamie Ella Wright Ledbetter, both deceased. She formerly owned and operated Matlock's Grocery with her husband and was a member of the Ace High Bridge Club. She was a member of Elon College Community Church, where she was a member of the Women's Fellowship.

Survivors include two daughters, Miss Nina Matlock of the home and Mrs. Ann M. Bowyer of Lexington; and two grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Mrs. Doris McIntyre and a brother, Mr. Arnold Ledbetter.

The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at Elon College Community Church by the Rev. Arch Aitcheson, pastor. Burial will be in Magnolia Cemetery.

The family will be at Rich and Thompson Mortuary in Burlington from 5 to 7 this evening.

Memorials may be made to Elon College Community Church, P.O. Box 625, Elon College, N.C. 27244.

Mr. Charles Gerringer

ELON COLLEGE - Mr. Charles Walter 'C.W.' Gerringer, 49, of 2113 Gerringer Mill Road, died at 7 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 24, 1998, at his home after seven months of failing health.

A native of Alamance County, he was the son of Mrs. Lillian Davis Gerringer, who survives, and the late Mr. Counsel Lee Gerringer. He was an automotive mechanic.

Survivors other than his mother of Elon College include a brother, Mr. Richard Lee Geringer of Elon College.

A graveside service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Monday at Shallow Ford United Church of Christ cemetery by the Rev. C. Donald Swinney, pastor of Calvary Baptist Church.

The family will be at the home.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Alamance-Caswell, P.O. Box 2122, Burlington, N.C. 27216-2122.

Mrs. Estelle L. Harris

BURLINGTON - Mrs. Novie Estelle Lawrence Harris, 78, of 1447 Flora Ave., died at 4:10 p.m. Friday, Jan. 23, 1998, at Alamance Regional Medical Center after one year of failing health, one week critical.

A native of Wake County, she was the wife of the late Mr. Coy Layburn Harris, and the daughter of Mr. Willie Autry Lawrence and Mrs. Pearl Oliver Lawrence, both deceased. He retired after 45 years from Glen Raven Mills and was a member of New Hope Baptist Church.

Survivors include a son, Mr. Jimmy Robert Harris of Burlington; two sisters, Mrs. Alberteen L. Wolfe and Mrs. Lillian L. Hall, both of Burlington; a grandchild; and a great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Ms. Josephine L. Atkins and Ms. Alice L. Bunn; and four brothers, Mr. Otto Lawrence, Mr. Braughton Lawrence, Mr. Percy Lawrence and Mr. Robert Lawrence.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at Lowe Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Olin Tatum, pastor of West Burlington Church of God. Burial will be in Pine Hill Cemetery.

The family will be at Lowe Funeral Home from 7 to 9 this evening, and at other times at the home.

Mr. Joseph D. Davis

YANCEYVILLE - Mr. Joseph Dameron 'Joe' Davis, 61, died Saturday morning, Jan. 24, 1998, at his home.

Born in 1936 in Warren County, he was the husband of Mrs. Annice Perkinson Davis, who survives, and the son of Mr. Edward Davis and Mrs. Harriet Tharrington Davis, both deceased. A 1954 graduate of John Graham High School in Warrenton, he was in the U.S. Air Force from 1954-88. He graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a degree in pharmacy. He moved to Yanceyville and became a partner in Yanceyville Drug Company with his brother, Mr. Tommy Davis, in 1969. He was past president of the Caswell County Chamber of Commerce and served 12 years on the Family Medical Center Board of Directors. He was past president of Caswell County Ducks Unlimited and was a past board member of the Cherokee Council of the Boy Scouts of America.

He was a member of Prospect United Methodist Church in West Yanceyville, where he was Administrative Board Chairman, Missions Coordinator, a member of the Stewardship Committee, Student Intern Committee and Organ Committee, was an active choir member and a certified lay speaker. He traveled to Armenia in 1993 with Project AGAPE Medical Team and was selected as Prospect United Methodist Church and Burlington District Lay Person of the Year in 1994. He was a member of the Burlington District Board of Laity for the United Methodist Church.

Survivors other than his wife of the home include a son, Mr. Tim Davis of Winston-Salem; a daughter, Ms. Bettye Barto of Greensboro; three brothers, Mr. Tommy Davis of Yanceyville, Mr. Charles Davis of Rocky Mount and Mr. William Davis of Reidsville; and three grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at Prospect United Methodist Church by the Rev. Scott Wilkerson, the Rev. Joe Lister and the Rev. Charles Davis. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The family will be at Marley Funeral Home from 3 to 6 this afternoon.

Mrs. Margaret Smith

GRAHAM - Mrs. Margaret Smith, 68, of P.O. Box 556, Ruffin, died Friday, Jan. 23, 1998, at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital in Greensboro, after two years of failing health.

A native of Pennsylvania, she was the wife of the late Mr. Judge Alexander Smith, and the daughter of Mr. Joseph Soley and Mrs. Elizabeth Parrish Soley, both deceased. She was a homemaker and attended Lowe Memorial Baptist Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Margaret Smith Felipe of Ruffin; a son, Mr. Judge A. Smith Jr. of Burlington; a stepdaughter, Mrs. June McDonald of Asheboro; and four grandchildren.

Mrs. Rose C. Garrett

BURLINGTON - Mrs. Rose Curtis Garrett of 12390 N. Prosperity Farms Road, Palm Gardens, Fla., died Saturday morning, Jan. 24, 1998, at Jupiter Medical Center in Jupiter, Fla.

Mrs. Jean T. Thompson

BURLINGTON - Mrs. Jean Tate Thompson, 83, of 343 Baldwin Road, died at 8:40 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 22, 1998, at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital due to head injuries from a fall on the ice Jan. 5.

A native of Alamance County, she was the wife of Mr. Ivan Hammer Thompson, who survives, and the daughter of Mr. Allen Benny Tate and Mrs. Grace Snyder Tate, both deceased. She was a graduate of East Carolina Teachers College and was a school teacher in Alamance County, having taught at Pleasant Grove, North Graham and Graham Middle School. She retired in 1980. She was a lifelong member of Graham Presbyterian Church. She was presented an honorary life membership by the Women of the Church in the Synod of North Carolina for the service to her church.

Survivors other than her husband include a daughter, Mrs. James (Elaine) Drye of Mooresville; two sisters, Mrs. Virginia Tate Bodein and Mrs. Denny Tate Utley, both of Burlington; a brother, Dr. Allen Denny Tate Jr. of Burlington; and two grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Mrs. Barbara Jean Thompson Stroud.

A memorial service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday at Graham Presbyterian Church by Dr. William Weckerly, the Rev. Louis East and Dr. Edwin Lewis.

The family will be at Graham Presbyterian Church parlor following the service, and at other times at the home of the brother, 1907 Sunnybrook Drive, Burlington.

Ms. Anne L. Jeffries

GREENSBORO - Ms. Anne L. Jeffries died Saturday, Jan. 17, 1998, in New York City.

A native of Alamance County, she was the daughter of Mr. Augustus V. Jeffries and Mrs. Ruth Jeffries, both deceased, and the stepdaughter of Mrs. Gertha D. Jeffries, who survives. She had lived in New York City for many years.

Survivors other than her stepmother of Raleigh include a sister, Ms. Marion Davis of Naples, Fla.; and a brother, Mr. Elmer H. Jeffries of Burlington.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. today at Martin's Chapel Baptist Church, with burial in the church cemetery.

Hargett Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Arthur J. McDaniel

SILER CITY - Mr. Arthur June McDaniel, 69, of 809 N. Chatham Ave., died Thursday, Jan. 22, 1998, at his home.

A native of Chatham County, he was the husband of the late Mrs. Betty Phillips McDaniel. He was retired from Hadley-Peoples Manufacturing Company and was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He was a member of Bonlee Baptist Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Ms. Vickie M. Jones of the home; two sons, Mr. Jeffery G. McDaniel of Siler City and Mr. Phillip A. McDaniel of Snow Camp; a sister, Ms. Ann M. Sandefur of Resaca, Ga.; four brothers, Mr. Earl McDaniel and Mr. David McDaniel, both of Siler City, Mr. Lewis McDaniel of Killeen, Texas, and Mr. Ray McDaniel of Thomasville; and seven grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday at Bonlee Baptist Church by the Rev. Darrell Williams. Burial will be in Hope Cemetery.

The family will be at Smith and Buckner Funeral Home from 7 to 9 this evening, and at other times at the home.

Mrs. Betty J. Cox

BURLINGTON - Mrs. Betty Jennings Cox, 80, of 1608 W. Front St., died at 9:15 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 22, 1998, at the Hospice Home of Burlington after a long illness.

A native of Moravian Falls, she was the wife of the Rev. Ben W. Cox, who survives, and the daughter of Dr. Royal G. Jennings and Mrs. Nell Hester Jennings, both deceased. She was a former school teacher at Elon College Elementary School. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Burlington.

Survivors other than her husband of the home include three daughters, Mrs. Nell Cox Paul of Rockville, Md., Mrs. Claire Cox Cash of Creedmoor and Mrs. Ann Cox Wooten of Burlington; a son, the Rev. Ben W. Cox Jr. of Boone; a brother, Dr. Royal G. Jennings Jr. of Presbyterian Home of High Point; and 10 grandchildren.

A memorial service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday at First Baptist Church of Burlington by Dr. Craig McMahan, pastor.

The family will be at the church fellowship hall one hour before the service, and at other times at the home.

Mrs. Lillie Fulcher

MEBANE - Mrs. Lillie Bessie Fulcher, 95, of 314 W. Holt St., died Thursday, Jan. 22, 1998, at Hawfields Presbyterian Home.

A native of Person County, she was the wife of the late Mr. Lewis M. Fulcher and the daughter of Mr. Dave Smith and Mrs. Annie Smith, both deceased. She was a homemaker and a lifelong member of Mount Zion Christian Church.

Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Louise Horner and Mrs. Betty Pore, both of Mebane; a sister, Ms. Judy Kimbro of Mebane; four grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and two step great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Mr. Rudy Smith and Mr. Walter Smith; and a sister, Ms. Onie Bradley.

The funeral will be conducted at 10 a.m. today at Walker's Funeral Home Chapel in Mebane by the Rev. John Bolin, pastor. Burial will be at Mount Zion Christian Church cemetery.
