Mrs. Debora Torain

GRAHAM - Mrs. Debora Sue Moore Torain of Lot 36, Jennifer Drive, died Thursday, Jan. 15, 1998, at her home.

A native of Alamance County, she was the wife of Mr. Willie Torain, who survives, and the daughter of Mr. Richard Moore, who survives, and the late Mrs. Kathleen Staufield Dodd. She was a food preparer at Quincy's Steakhouse.

Survivors other than her husband and father, both of Burlington, include her stepfather, Mr. Roy Jerome Dodd of Graham; and six sisters, Mrs. Earline Robinson, Mrs. Sylvia Moore Pinnix, Mrs. Angela Moore Graves, Miss Kathy Ann Moore, Miss Hope Marie Moore and Miss Felicia Dodd, all of Burlington.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at Sharpe Memorial Chapel by the Rev. George Cheek, pastor of St. John AME Church in Gibsonville. Burial will be in North Lawn Cemetery.

The body may be viewed after 3 p.m. today at Sharpe Funeral Home.

The family will be at the home of a sister, Mrs. Sylvia Moore Pinnix, 1413 N. Park Ave., Burlington.

Mrs. Helen B. Ward

HILLSBOROUGH - Mrs. Helen 'Granny' Byrd Ward, 84, of 4118 Walnut Grove Church Road, died Friday, Jan. 16, 1998, at her home.

A native of Orange County, she was the wife of the late Mr. Allen E. Ward. She was a lifelong member of Mount Zion Christian Church.

Survivors include five daughters, Ms. Helen Johnstone of Mocksville, Ms. Janice Ward of Hillsborough, Ms. Hazel Reavis of Cary, Ms. Judy Parker of Snow Camp and Ms. Anne Goldman of New Bern; three sons, Mr. Joe Ward, Mr. Willard Ward and Mr. Sam Ward, all of Hillsborough; two brothers, Mr. Coy Byrd and Mr. Ira Byrd, both of Mebane; 13 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at Walker's Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Larry Broadright. Burial will be in Mount Zion Christian Church cemetery.

The family will be at Walker's Funeral Home from 6 to 8 this evening, and at other times at the home.

Memorials may be made to Lineberger Cancer Center, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Box 7295, Chapel Hill, N.C. 27599-7295; or to the Orange County Rescue Squad.

Dr. Robert M. Kimball

BURLINGTON - Dr. Robert Morris Kimball, 84, died at 4:55 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 17, 1998, at Alamance Regional Medical Center.

Born April 21, 1913, in Manson, he was the husband for 57 years of Mrs. Mary Cooke Kimball, who survives, and the son of Mr. Jacob Kimball and Mrs. Ruth Hayden Morris Kimball, both deceased. He was a 1934 graduate of Elon College and a 1937 graduate of Yale Divinity School. He was ordained as a minister in the United Church of Christ in 1937 and served as a chaplain in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He received an honorary doctor of divinity degree from Elon College in 1963. He served churches in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Virginia and Ohio, and from 1959 to 1972 he was the minister of First Christian Church in Burlington. Before his retirement in 1983, he was pastor of Happy Home United Church of Christ in Ruffin and Hebron United Church of Christ in Winston-Salem. He was a member of St. Mark's Reformed Church for the past eight years.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Mr. Robert David Kimball of Chapel Hill and Mr. Richard Allen Kimball of Whiteville; a daughter, Ms. Sue Kimball Boone of Gibsonia, Pa.; two sisters, Ms. Ruth Kimball Milling of Burlington and Ms. Alma Kimball Mayfield of Norlina; and seven grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Ms. Lillie Kimball Tanner, and a brother, Mr. Jacob Allen Kimball Jr.

The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Mark's Reformed Church by the Rev. Bob Disher Jr., the Rev. Ron Price, and the Rev. Scott Woody, pastors. Burial will be in Mount Auburn United Church of Christ cemetery in Manson at 2:30 p.m. Monday.

The family will be at Rich and Thompson Mortuary in Burlington from 6 to 8 this evening, and at other times at the home.

Memorials may be made to St. Mark's Reformed Church, 1230 St. Marks Church Road, Burlington, N.C. 27215; or to Mount Auburn United Church of Christ, Manson, N.C. 27553; or Elon College, c/o Memorial Contributions, P.O. Box 398, Elon College, N.C. 27244.

Mrs. Dorothy K. Most

BURLINGTON - Mrs. Dorothy Ruth Buck Kyte Most, 80, of The Oaks, died at 6:32 p.m. Friday, Jan. 16, 1998, at Alamance Health Care Center.

Funeral services will be held in Dundalk, Md.

Rich and Thompson Mortuary in Burlington is in charge of local arrangements. Duda-Ruck Funeral Home in Dundalk, Md., is in charge of service arrangements.

Mr. Clyde W. Miles

BURLINGTON - Mr. Clyde Walters Miles, 79, of Alamance Health Care Center, formerly of South Mebane Street, died at 2:25 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 17, 1998, at Alamance Regional Medical Center after three years of failing health, two weeks critical.

A native of Alamance County, he was the husband of the late Mrs. Hazel Hilliard Miles, and the son of Mr. Oakus Edgar Miles and Mrs. Pearl Nicks Miles, both deceased. He was retired from the city of Graham and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of St. John's New Mission United Church of Christ.

Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Faye Miles Spoon of Gibsonville; five sisters, Mrs. Mary Miles Gunn, Mrs. Berta Miles Rice, Mrs. Erma Miles Pearson, and Mrs. Margie Miles Briggs, all of Burlington, and Mrs. Doris Miles Mann of Graham; four brothers, Mr. Oscar Miles, Mr. Maynard Miles and Mr. William Miles, all of Burlington, and Mr. James Alvin Miles of Elon College; and a grandchild.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Mr. R. Graham Miles; and a sister, Mrs. Nellie Miles Wilson.

The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Rich and Thompson Chapel in Burlington by the Rev. Robert M. 'Bob' Disher Jr., pastor of St. Mark's Reformed Church, and Dr. Garry Baldwin, pastor of Brookwood Baptist Church. Burial will be in Alamance Memorial Park.

The family will be at Rich and Thompson Mortuary in Burlington from 5 to 7 Monday afternoon, and at other times at the home of the daughter, 807 Driftwood Drive, Gibsonville.

Memorials may be made to the American Lung Association, North Central Area, 3409-D W. Wendover Ave., Greensboro, N.C. 27407.

Mr. H. Thomas Spoon

BURLINGTON - Mr. H. Thomas 'Tommy' Spoon, 45, of 842 Kimberly Road, died at 3:45 a.m. Friday, Jan. 16, 1998, at Alamance Regional Medical Center.

A native of Alamance County, he was the husband of Mrs. Jo Anne Austin Spoon, who survives, and the son of Mrs. Evelyn Madden Spoon, who survives, and the late Mr. Harold Benson Spoon. He was a teacher and coach at Walter M. Williams High School since 1986. He was a member of St. Mark's Reformed Church.

Survivors other than his wife of the home and mother of Burlington include a son, Mr. Thomas Brandon Spoon of the home; and a brother, Mr. Darold 'Dink' Spoon of Burlington.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at St. Mark's Reformed Church by the Rev. Robert M. Disher Jr., pastor, and Dr. Garry Baldwin, pastor of Brookwood Baptist Church. Burial will be in Pine Hill Cemetery.

The family will be at Rich and Thompson Mortuary in Burlington from 4 to 7 this evening, and at other times at the home.

Mr. George E. Graves

GRAHAM - Mr. George Eli Graves, 83, of 7916 McBane Mill Road, died at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 15, 1998, at the Laurels of Chatham after two years of failing health.

A native of Alamance County, he was the husband of Mrs. Manie Perry Graves, who survives, and the son of Mr. Eli Martin Graves and Mrs. Martha Jane Williams Graves, both deceased. He was a retired merchant and farmer.

Survivors other than his wife of the home include a daughter, Miss Frances M. Graves of the home; and a sister, Mrs. Josie G. Williams of Graham.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Mount Olive Baptist Church by the Rev. Perry Hardison, pastor, and the Rev. Paul West. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The family will be at McClure Funeral Home in Graham from 7 to 9 this evening, and at other times at the home.

Mr. James Barbour Sr.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Mr. James Ray Barbour Sr., 87, died Thursday, Jan. 15, 1998.

A native of Johnston County, he was the husband for 61 years of Mrs. Gladys W. Barbour, who survives. He was retired from S.C.M. Corporation and later worked for the Gator Office Equipment Company. He was a member of the Arlington United Methodist Church and was a founding member of the Jacksonville Campus Ministry.

Survivors other than his wife include a son, Mr. James R. Barbour Jr. of Banner Elk; two brothers, Mr. A.F. Barbour of Burlington and Mr. O.P. Barbour of Cary; two sisters, Ms. Buena Palpon of Raleigh and Ms. Julia Slayton of Columbia, S.C.; and two grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at Arlington United Methodist Church by Dr. Kenneth Minton and Dr. John Haney. Burial will be in Arlington Park Cemetery.

The family will be at the Arlington Park Funeral Home from 2 to 5 Sunday afternoon.

Memorials may be made to the Arlington United Methodist Church or the Jacksonville Campus Ministry.

Mrs. Magadie Garland

BURLINGTON - Mrs. Magadie Garland of 1314 Stout St., died Monday, Jan. 12, 1998, at Hillhaven Health Care after a long illness.

A native of Caswell County, she was the wife of the late Mr. Walter Thompson and the late Mr. Samuel Garland, and the daughter of Mr. Jeff Thaxton and Mrs. Amy Pulliam, both deceased. She was a cook at Briggs Restaurant in Yanceyville, and a member of High Rock Baptist Church where she served in the choir, as secretary, missionary and usher.

Survivors include three daughter, Mrs. Grace Ulene Graves and Mrs. Audrey Jerene Gant, both of Columbus, Ohio, Mrs. Emma Jean Garland of Burlington; 15 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one daughter, Mrs. Shirley Dean Cobb.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. today at High Rock Baptist Church by the Rev. Robert Broadnax, pastor. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The family will be at the home.

Sharpe Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. John Burwell Jr.

WINSTON-SALEM - Mr. John William Burwell Jr., 76, of Dalton Road, King, died Wednesday, Jan. 14, 1998, at N.C. Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem.

Born Jan. 18, 1921, he was the son of Mr. John William Burwell Sr. and Mrs. Edna Rebecca Page Burwell, both deceased.

Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Norman (Rebecca B.) Simpson of Hickory, Mrs. Thomas (Deborah B.) Atkinson of Apex; three sisters, Mrs. Inez McGee and Mrs. Richard (Johnsia) Hall, both of King, and Mrs. Edith Roberts of Clemmons; four brothers, Mr. Norman Burwell of Lewisville, Mr. Tom Burwell of Thomasville, Mr. Hughes Burwell and Mr. Joe Burwell, both of Graham; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. today at Poplar Springs Church of Christ by the Rev. Ralph Sproles. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Stokes County, P.O. Box 10, Danbury, N.C. 27052; or to Brenner's Children Hospital, Medical Center Blvd., Winston-Salem, N.C. 27157.

Mr. Brandon Albertson

GRAHAM - Mr. Brandon Anthony Albertson, 21, died Thursday, Jan. 15, 1998.

A native of Newport News, Va., he was the son of Mrs. Diane Turner and Mr. Lonnie S. Albertson, who survive, and the stepson of Mr. Eldon Turner, who survives. He was raised in Hampton, Va. He was a machinist for Kamtec Inc. for more than two years and was a Baptist.

Survivors other than his mother and stepfather of Hampton and his father of Atlanta include a brother, Mr. Rain Albertson of Hahira, Ga.; a half sister, Ms. Loni Jenette Albertson of Chesapeake, Va.; his maternal grandmother, Ms. Margaret Rilee of Gloucester County, Va.; his maternal grandfather, Mr. Carlton Baxter of Hampton; and his paternal grandfather, Mr. L. Sherlock Albertson of Norfolk, Va.

The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at Lawrence B. Wood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Dennis Hollandsworth. Burial will be in Parklawn Memorial Park in Hampton.

The family will be at the funeral home from 3 to 4:30 Sunday afternoon.
