Ms. Sabara L. Conyers

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. - Ms. Sabara LaVern Conyers, 33, died Friday, Oct. 17, 1997.

A native of Alamance County, she was the daughter of Ms. Betty L. Conyers, who survives. She attended Burlington City Schools and was an environmental service worker. She was Baptist.

Survivors other than her mother of Burlington include four sons, Mr. John T. Conyers of Graham, Mr. Jon Sydnor, Mr. Jeraldo Sydnor and Mr. Justin Sydnor, all of Atlantic City; two daughters, Ms. Rashonda Conyers of Burlington and Mrs. Sade Conyers of Pleasant, N.J.; two sisters, Mrs. Pamela C. Turner of Green Level and Ms. Wanda Conyers of Burlington; and paternal grandparents, Mr. Thomas Cooper and Mrs. Jettie Cooper of Glen Raven.

A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at Farrington-Morrow Memorial cemetery in Graham by Ms. Joann Cousin. The body may be viewed from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. today at Burrus and Burrus Funeral Service in Graham.

The family will be at Farrington-Morrow Memorial cemetery 30 minutes before the service, and at other times at 1933 Morning Side Drive, Apt. G, Burlington.

Mrs. Lucille J. Reid

GIBSONVILLE - Mrs. Lucille Jones Reid, 83, of 4843 N.C. 87 North, died at 1:06 a.m. Friday, Oct. 24, 1997, at Skilled Nursing Division of Alamance Regional Medical Center after a long illness.

A native of Al a mance County, she was the wife of the late Mr. William Nathaniel Reid, and the daughter of Mr. John Richard Jones and Mrs. Lela Oakes Jones, both deceased. She and her husband operated a diary farm in the Shiloh community. She was a member of the Altamahaw-Ossipee Extension Club and the Altamahaw-Ossipee Civitan Club. She was a life member of Shiloh United Methodist Church, where she was a member of the United Methodist Women.

Survivors include a son, Mr. Larry Reid of Gibsonville; three sisters, Miss Mary B. Jones of Elon College, Mrs. Dorothy J. Hayden of Burlington and Mrs. Nina J. Utsey of Wilmington; two brothers, Mr. John C. Jones of Lake Worth, Fla., and Mr. William L. Jones of Reidsville; and two grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Mr. Jerry E. Jones.

The funeral will be conducted at 4 p.m. Sunday at Shiloh United Methodist Church by Dr. Guy V. Soule, pastor. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The family will be at Lowe Funeral Home from 6 to 8 this evening.

Mr. Fred Y. Westbrooks

BURLINGTON - Mr. Fred Y. Westbrooks, 76, of 1130 Ava St., died at 1:45 p.m. Friday, Oct. 24, 1997, at the Hospice Home of Burlington after an illness of three weeks, one week critical.

A native of Guilford County, he was the husband of Mrs. Mozelle Baldwin Westbrooks, who survives, and the son of Mr. W.M. Westbrooks and Mrs. Sarah Summers Westbrooks, both deceased. He served in the U.S. Air Force as a staff sergeant during World War II and was a member of the Air Force Association. He was a retired carpenter with Donald Perry Construction Co. He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Elon College, where he was a life member of the Methodist Men, the Men's Bible Class and Board of Trustees.

Survivors other than his wife of the home include a daughter, Mrs. Judy Westbrooks Blake of Graham; two sons, Mr. Ricky D. Westbrooks of Burlington and Mr. Randy H. Westbrooks of Greensboro; three sisters, Mrs. Alice Surber and Miss Etta Westbrooks, both of Burlington, and Mrs. Hallie Brown of Gibsonville; two brothers, Mr. Frank Westbrooks of Burlington and Mr. Willard Westbrooks of Graham; and three grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday at First United Methodist Church of Elon College by the Rev. Randall E. Innes, pastor, and the Rev. Dan Lyons, pastor of Tabernacle United Methodist Church in Albermarle. Burial will be in Alamance Memorial Park.

The family will be at Rich and Thompson Mortuary in Burlington from 6 to 8 this evening, and at other times at the home.

Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church of Elon College Building Fund, 1630 Westbrook Ave., Elon College, N.C. 27244.

Mrs. Clara P. Wilson

BURLINGTON - Mrs. Clara Pore Wilson, 84, of 1428 Cloverdale St., died at 9:05 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 23, 1997, at her home after one year of failing health.

A native of Guilford County, she was the wife of Mr. Ralph Woodrow Wilson, who survives, and the daughter of Mr. John Franklin Pore and Mrs. Mamie Shipton Pore, both deceased. She was retired from Consolidated Hosiery. She was a member of Efland United Methodist Church.

Survivors other than her husband of the home include a daughter, Mrs. George (Barbara) Walton of Newport; a sister, Mrs. Julia Porterfield of Burlington; a brother, Mr. Gilbert Pore of Burlington; and two grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Mrs. Ella Higgs and Mrs. Polly Greer; and four brothers, Mr. Spurgeon Pore, Mr. John Pore, Mr. Lee Pore and Mr. James Pore.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Lowe Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Jimmy Weaver, pastor of Elfand United Methodist Church, and the Rev. Carlton Wilson. Burial will be in Graham Memorial Park.

The family will be at Lowe Funeral Home from 6:30 to 8:30 this evening, and at other times at the home.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Alamance-Caswell, P.O. Box 2122, Burlington, N.C. 27216-2122.

Mrs. Nancy B. Kaucher

GRAHAM - Mrs. Nancy Brown Kaucher, 75, of 5406 Thompson Mill Road died at 10:45 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 23, 1997, at her home after a long illness.

A native of Guilford County, she was the wife of Mr. Hans E. Kaucher, who survives, and the daughter of Mr. Grover Cleveland Brown and Mrs. Susan Hedgecock Brown, both deceased. She was retired from the textile industry and was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Holy Comforter.

Survivors other than her husband of the home include a daughter, Mrs. James (Margarete) K. Graham of Burlington; three sisters, Ms. Amy B. Gutcher of Destin, Fla., Mrs. Lawrence (Jessie B.) Strange of Burlington and Mrs. Claude (Marie B.) Green of Greensboro; and two grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Mrs. Lillie Mae B. Yow and Mrs. Ruby B. Thomasson; and a brother, Mr. Richard 'Bud' Brown.

A graveside service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday at Pine Hill cemetery by the Rev. Michael G. Dunnington, assistant rector of the Episcopal Church of the Holy Comforter.

The family will be at Rich and Thompson Mortuary in Burlington from 6 to 8 this evening, and at other times at the home.

Mrs. Juanita LaPrade

GRAHAM - Mrs. Juanita Wilson LaPrade of 1201 George Bason Road died at 10:10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 24, 1997, at Alamance Regional Medical Center.

A native of Orange County, she was the wife of Mr. Ralph C. LaPrade, and the daughter of Mr. Fred L. Ivey and Mrs. Lizzie Cates Ivey, both deceased. She was a member of Ireland Street Chapel.

Survivors other than her husband of the home include two daughters, Mrs. Margie Kidd of Burlington and Mrs. Jean Rodriguez of Graham; a son, Mr. Richard L. Wilson of Graham; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at Rich and Thompson Chapel in Graham. Burial will be in Graham Memorial Park.

The family will be at Rich and Thompson Funeral Home in Graham from 4 to 6 Sunday afternoon, and at other times at the home.

Mr. Louis B. Petty

BURLINGTON - Mr. Louis Bernard Petty, 70, of 2115 Race Track Road, died at 6:25 a.m. Friday, Oct. 24, 1997, at Alamance Regional Medical Center after several years of failing health, three days critical.

A native of Alamance County, he was the husband for 52 years of Mrs. Jessie Wood Petty, who survives, and the son of Mr. J. Walter Petty and Mrs. Della Bailey Petty, both deceased. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and was a retired technologist for Allied Signal. He was a member of the Burlington Moose Lodge, the Legion of Moose, Fellowship Degree. He was a charter member of Lowe Memorial Church.

Survivors other than his wife of the home include two daughters, Mrs. Jenny Petty Basham of Burlington and Mrs. Lisa Petty Mitchell of Greensboro; a son, Mr. Michael Louis Petty of Graham; a half sister, Mrs. Mary Smith of Haw River; a half brother, Mr. Dace Ingold of Burlington; and two grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Mr. J.W. Petty, Mr. Thomas Lee Petty and Mr. Refird Petty.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Rich and Thompson Chapel in Graham by the Rev. Bobby Helms, pastor of Gospel Baptist Church. Burial will be in Alamance Memorial Park.

The family will be at Rich and Thompson Funeral Home in Graham from 6 to 8 this evening, and at other times at the home.

Mr. Beverly D. Hayes

ORLANDO, Fla. - Mr. Beverly 'Biff' DeShazo Hayes, 74, of 4937 Waterway Court, died at 8:25 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 23, 1997, at Arbors Rehabilitation and Sub-Acute Center in Altamonte Springs, Fla.

A native of Burlington, he was the son of Mr. Frank Alfred Hayes and Mrs. Blanche DeShazo Hayes, both deceased. He was a U.S. Marine veteran, serving during World War II in the Pacific Theatre. He was an area supervisor for Pan Amtrans Atlantic Cable Co. He was a member of the Mokanna Masonic Lodge No. 329 F&AM, past district deputy grand master, Bahia Shrine, created past Master's Unit and created Southeastern Past Master's Association. He was of the Methodist faith.

Survivors include a son, Mr. Frank A. Hayes of Clifton, Ariz.; a daughter, Mrs. Helen B. McKibben of Hobbs, N.M.; a stepson, Mr. Woody L. Hayes of Carlsbad, N.M.; a stepdaughter, Mrs. Tobie P. Smith of College Station, Texas; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be conducted in Magnolia cemetery in Elon College at a later date.

Rich and Thompson Mortuary in Burlington is in charge of local arrangements.

Mariah Y. Evans

GREENSBORO - Mariah Yancey Evans, infant daughter of Mr. Maurice Evans and Mrs. Rita Yancey Evans, died Wednesday, Oct. 22, 1997.

Survivors other than her parents include her maternal grandparents, Mr. Franklin Yancey and Mrs. Lillie Yancey of Pelham; and paternal grandparents, Mr. Hassell McCoy Evans and Mrs. Treva Mae Evans of Haw River.

A private graveside service will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at Red Hill Baptist Church cemetery in Pelham by the Rev. Gregory Hopkins.

Fulton Funeral Home in Yanceyville is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Carroll W. Ruff

CONCORD - Mr. Carroll Wayne Ruff, 56, died Wednesday, Oct. 22, 1997, at the Concord Nursing Center.

Born July 16, 1941, in Bryson City, he was the son of Mr. Harrison Ruff and Mrs. Mamie Lou Ellen Ruff, both deceased. He was a retired self-employed truck driver for Fred Grove Company in Leland.

Survivors include five daughters, Ms. Carol Ann Hill of Winston-Salem, Ms. Terry Lynn Ruff and Ms. Virginia Faye Ruff, both of Graham, Ms. Elizabeth Kay Parrish of Haw River and Ms. Cynthia Lynn Ruff of Faith; a son, Mr. Wayne Jackson Ruff of Rockwell; two brothers, Mr. Lonnie Ruff of Mebane and Mr. Homer Ruff of Richmond, Va.; three sisters, Ms. Hilda Somers and Ms. Irene Hardin, both of Burlington; and Ms. Magdalene Gallagher of Fredricton, Canada; and four grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted at 4 p.m. today at Whitley's Funeral Home in Kannapolis. Burial will be in Carolina Memorial Park.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Cabarrus County, P.O. Box 1235, Concord, N.C. 28082, or the charity of choice.

Mrs. Shirley H. Cook

CHAPEL HILL - Mrs. Shirley Hanks Cook, 52, of 1005 Pineview Road, died Wednesday, Oct. 22, 1997, at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill after 12 years of failing health.

A native of Orange County, she was the wife of Mr. Christopher Elgin Cook, who survives, and the daughter of Mr. Freddie P. Hanks and Mrs. Virginia Crider Hanks, both deceased. She was a homemaker and a Baptist.

Survivors other than her husband of the home include two daughters, Mrs. Mary Ellen Thompson of Saxapahaw and Mrs. Ann Emory of Chapel Hill; two sons, Mr. Paul L. Cook of Durham and Mr. Chris Cook of Mebane; a sister, Mrs. Phyllis Kay Neal of Graham; four brothers, Mr. Freddie Hanks of Fayetteville, Mr. Thomas 'Pete' Hanks of Chapel Hill, Mr. Frank Hanks of Burlington and Mr. James 'Butch' Hanks of Gibsonville; and seven grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Ms. Marie Neal.

The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at McClure Funeral Home Chapel in Graham by the Rev. Frank Foy, pastor of Bethel Baptist Church of Chapel Hill. Burial will be in Moores Chapel cemetery.

The family will be at McClure Funeral Home in Graham from 7 to 9 this evening and at other times at the home.
