Nora Jean Upchurch Bare, age 81 of Jefferson, died Tuesday, July 27, 2004 at Ashe Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Bare was born September 24, 1922 in Alleghany County to the late George and Victoria Wyatt Upchurch. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Wade Hampton Bare, brothers, Hoke, Bryan and Buddy Upchurch and a sister, Pearl Caudill. She was a member of Orion Baptist Church. She married Wade Bare in 1942 in York, SC. They were married for 43 years. She was a lifelong learner. She was an avid reader and loved working at the Ashe County Public Library. This love of learning inspired her children to become educators. She loved her family and friends dearly and had a very special place in her heart for her grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM, Thursday, July 29th at the Orion Baptist Church. Rev. Mace Johnson will officiate. Burial will follow in the Orion Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 10:00 till 11:00 AM prior to the service. Mrs. Bare will lie in state from 6:00 – 8:00 PM Wednesday, July 28th at Badger Funeral Home. Mrs. Bare is survived by: Daughters: Karen Hunt of Breckenridge, CO, Ann Edwards of Lenoir, NC and Ava Miller of Harmony, NC Brother: Lewis Upchurch of Laurel Springs, NC Sisters: Reba Miller of North Wilkesboro, NC and Betty Miller of Blountville, TN 4 grandchildren, 1 great-grandchild. 2 step-grandchildren, 5 step-great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. Badger Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Thelma Lorraine Phillips

Thelma Lorraine Roten Miller Phillips, age 73 of Lansing, NC died Tuesday, July 27, 2004 at her home. Mrs. Phillips was born December 27, 1930 in Ashe County to Paul and Edna Richardson Roten. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM, Friday, July 30, 2004 at the North Fork Primitive Baptist Church. Elder John Jackson and Rev. Chuck Call will officiate. Burial will follow in the Roten-Graybeal Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 till 8:00 PM, Thurdsay, July 29th at Badger Funeral Home. Flowers will be appreciated or memorials may be made to Hospice of Ashe, PO Box 421, Jefferson, NC 28640. Mrs. Phillips is survived by: Parents: Paul & Edna Roten of Creston, NC 4 Sons: Robert Miller and wife Cathy of Warrensville, NC, Walter Miller and wife Polly of Troutman, NC, Ricky and Gerry Miller both of Creston, NC 2 Daughters: Roberta Pennington and husband Rodney of North Wilkesboro, NC and Loveta Schweers and husband Owen of Salisbury, MD 1 Brother: Dalton Roten of Creston, NC 12 grandchildren & 10 great grandchildren. Mary Lee Johnson Blevins, age 70 of Valdese, NC, formerly of Ashe County, died Thursday July 29, 2004 at the North Carolina Baptist Hospital. Mrs. Blevins was born September 1, 1933 in Ashe County to the late David and Hattie Bare Johnson. She was also preceded in death by 4 brothers and 2 sisters. She was married to David Ralph Blevins for 48 years. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She attended Trinity Baptist Church in Drexel, NC. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 PM, Sunday August 1, 2004 at the Badger Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Scott Moneyham, Minister Danny Miller and Minister Fred Richardson will officiate. Burial will follow in the Brooks Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 till 8:00 PM Saturday, July 31st at Badger Funeral Home. Mrs. Blevins is survived by: Husband: David Ralph Blevins Daughters: Belinda Mosteller of Connelly Springs, NC and Charlene Rupard of Collettsville, NC Brother: Howard Johnson of Lansing, NC Sister: Anna Jean Testerman of Lansing, NC 6 grandchildren, 3 grandchildren, several nieces and nephews Badger Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Robert Bruce Cox

Robert Bruce Cox age 94 of Laurel Springs, NC, died Tuesday, August 3, 2004 at the Segraves Care Center in Jefferson, NC, after several months of declining health. Mr. Cox was born on July 19, 1910 in Laurel Springs, NC to John Ander and Vertie Woodie Cox. He was preceded in death by his wife Vergie Liddle Cox, two daughters Jewel Cox Baldwin and Louise Cox. Funeral Services will be held Friday, August 6, 2004 at 2:00 P.M. at the Badger Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Reeves Jones will officiate. Burial will follow in the Transou United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Thursday, August 5, 2004 from 6:00-8:00 P.M. at Badger Funeral Home. Food and flowers are appreciated and memorials may be made to the Scottville Baptist Church, 6164 NC Hwy 88 East, Laurel Springs, NC 28644 or to the Transou United Methodist Church, 422 Nathans Creek School Rd., Crumpler, NC 28617. The family will meet at the home of his niece, Louise Hash in Laurel Springs. Mr. Cox is survived by: Son: John C. Ruth Virginia Sturgill Witherspoon, age 89 of Jefferson, NC, died Wednesday, August 4, 2004 at Ashe Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Witherspoon was born April 5, 1915 in Ashe County to the late Steve and Laura Gentry Sturgill. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Lucius Witherspoon. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM, Saturday, August 7th at Friendship Baptist Church. Rev. Herb Parunak, Rev. David Grinnell, Rev. Mike Hamby, Rev. Johnny Blevins and Rev. Steve Witherspoon will officiate. Burial will follow in the Friendship Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 till 9:00 PM Friday, August 6th at Friendship Baptist Church. Mr. Treadway was born September 10, 1944 in Ashe County to Frank and Virginia Jones Treadway. He was preceded in death by his father. Mr. Treadway was a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM, Saturday, August 7th at the Badger Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. J.C. Darnell, Rev. Jim Greer, Rev. Dean Shaw and Minister David Lyalls will officiate. Burial will follow in the Clint Gilley Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7:00 till 9:00 PM, Friday, August 6th at Badger Funeral Home. Virginia Clarie Mullis May Carr, better known as Toots, age 77 of West Jefferson, NC, died Tuesday, August 10, 2004 at Ashe Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Carr was born May 26, 1927 in Ashe County to the late Mack and Julia Hodges Mullis. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer Carr and a daughter Ginger Lefevers. Graveside services will be held Friday, August 13th at the Midway Baptist Church Cemetery. Rev. Jack Miller and Rev. Steve Leashomb will officiate. The family will receive friends from 7:00 till 9:00 PM, Thursday, August 12th at Badger Funeral Home. Flowers will be appreciated or memorials may be made to the Midway Baptist Church cemetery Fund, 1924 Mt. Jefferson Rd., West Jefferson, NC 28694. John Cabot Witherspoon, age 84 of Jefferson, NC, died Wednesday, August 11, 2004 at Ashe Memorial Hospital. Mr. Witherspoon was born October 2, 1919 in Ashe County to the late James and Effie Burkett Witherspoon. Mr. Witherspoon served in the United States Army during World War II and was a decorated with a bronze star. He was a member and deacon at Friendship Baptist Church. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM, Friday, August 13th at Friendship Baptist Church. Rev. David Grinnell and Rev. Johnny Blevins will officiate. Burial will follow in the Friendship Baptist Church cemetery with Military rites. The family will receive friends from 7:00 till 9:00 PM, Thursday, August 12th at Friendship Baptist Church. Memorials may be made to Friendship Baptist Church cemetery Fund. Mr. Witherspoon is survived by: Wife: Ruth Shatley Witherspoon Son: Rev.
