John Henry Brown
July 25, 1918 - December 30, 2001

Candler - John Henry Brown, 83, of Melton Road died icon Sunday, December 30, 2001 at Mission St. Joseph’s Health System following a period of declining health.

A native of Andrews, NC, he resided in Buncombe County since the early 1940’s. He was the son of the late Bob and Gussie Brown. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Air Force in the Pacific Campaign. He was a retiree of Kraft Foods Company and a forty year member and former deacon of Oak Forest Presbyterian Church. Mr. Brown was also a grower of hybrid rhododendron and azaleas.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Brown was preceded in death by sisters, Willie Kate Cogdill and Nell Hicks.

Surviving are his loving wife of 59 years, Evelyn Chapman Brown of the home; sons and daughters-in-law, John R. “Rusty” and Rosemary Brown of Candler, and Gerald K. “Jerry” and Patsy Brown of Candler; daughters, Janice Elaine Brown of Waynesville, Louise Brown Fontaine of Asheville, and Constance Ann “Connie” Brown of Candler; six grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren; brother, Joe Brown of Brevard; sisters, Mary Sue Stancil and Catherine Corley both of Anderson, SC, and Betty Pierce of Nebraska.

Funeral services will be held at 2 PM Wednesday in the Anders-Rice Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Tim Meredith officiating. Burial will be in Pisgah View Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 PM Tuesday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the American Lung Association of NC, 31 College Place, Asheville, NC 28801.

Papa Brown was loved by everyone and never met a stranger, He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Ansel Millard Levi
November 28, 1909 - December 28, 2001

Enka - Ansel Millard Levi of 17 Oak Street died icon Friday, December 28, 2001 at Pisgah Manor Health Care Center.

A native of Greenville, S.C. He had resided in Asheville for most of his life.

Mr. Levi retired after 40 years of service with American Enka Corp. where he was an electrician.

He was a member of Enka Baptist Church, a World War I I veteran of the U.S. Navy serving in the Pacific Theater, a graduate of Cecils Business College, Active in the Eastern Star, Chapter # 2 where he served as Worthy Patron, member of Mt. Herman Masonic Lodge # 118 where he was a former master of the lodge and was a member and Past President of the Golden K Kiwanis Club.

He was a son of the late David Marion and Victoria Southern Levi and also preceded in death by his sisters, Louise Jarrett, Orinne Stuman and Nina Edwards and brothers, Loyd Levi and David Levi.

Surviving are his wife, Annie Ray Nicholson Levi of the home; son, Michael A. Levi of Washington, D.C.; grand daughter, Kimberly Levi of Washington, D.C.; sister, Allene Watts of Chattanooga, Tennessee; brother, Lawrence Levi of Asheville.

Graveside services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Monday at Calvary Churchyard in Fletcher with the Rev. Ron Brown officiating.

Military services will follow conducted by the Buncombe County Veterans Council Memorial Team.

The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday at Anders-Rice Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to Enka Baptist Church, P.O. Box 219, Enka, N.C. 28728.

Roy Hyatt
March 19, 1925 - December 31, 2001

Asheville - Roy Hyatt, 76, of 24 Alclare Drive died icon Monday, December 31, 2001 at Memorial Mission Hospital following a long illness.

A lifelong resident of Buncombe County. Mr. Hyatt retired from General Electric where he served as a sales representative. He was a member of Trinity Baptist Church and a member of Beaver Lake Golf Course where he was an avid golfer and golf instructor.

He was a son of the late Clyde and Crelia Wyatt Hyatt.

Surviving are his wife of 55 years, Ethel Sexton Hyatt of the home; brother, J.C. Hyatt of Asheville and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday in the chapel of Anders-Rice Funeral Home with the Rev’s Dr. Ralph Sexton, Jr., Dr. Ralph Sexton, Sr. and Allen Rash officiating. Burial will in Green Hills Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be J.C. Hyatt, Jr., Tim Hyatt, John Gilbert, Dwight Parrish, Mark Sexton and Matthew Templeton.

The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Thursday at the Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to Trinity Baptist Church Building Fund, 216 Shelburne Road, Asheville, N.C. 28806.

Carlie Joe Fender
September 6, 1937 - February 15, 2002

Candler - Carlie Joe Fender, 64, formerly of Candler died icon Friday, February 15, 2002.

A native and resident of Buncombe County for most of his life. He retired in 1999 as a Building Inspector for Buncombe County after 25 years of service.

Mr. Fender was a member of Good News Baptist Church and served in the U.S. Army. He loved gospel music and traveled with the Primitive Quartet.

He was a son of Suffie Riddle Fender of Candler and the late Hushai H. Fender and also preceded in death by his beloved wife of 43 years, Mary Ingle Fender.

Surviving in addition to his mother are his wife, Anna Kelly of Old Fort; son, Robert J. Fender of Asheville; daughter, Cynthia F. Wilson and husband, Robert of Canton; grand daughter, Madison Wilson of Canton; sisters, Juanita Dye of Candler, Patsy Waugh and husband, Harold of Candler, Penny Sheppard and husband, Jerry of Waynesville, Judy McGimsey and husband, Bobby of Morganton, Linda Frady and husband, Mike of Candler, Brenda Tweed and husband, Larry of Candler and Irene Kiser and husband, Dale of Hickory; brothers, C.L. Fender and wife, Linda and Landon Fender and wife, Shirley all of Candler.

Memorial services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Thursday in the Chapel of Anders-Rice Funeral Home with the Rev. Steve Fox, Rev. Jackie Collins and members of the Primitive Quartet officiating.

The family will receive friends immediately following services at the funeral home and at other times will be at the home of a sister, Linda Frady, 293 Liberty Road, Candler.

Estele Clemmons
January 29, 1926 - February 21, 2002

Asheville - Estele Clemmons, 76, of 18 Old Leicester Hwy. died icon Thursday, February 21, 2002 at Mountain Area Hospice Solace Center.

A native of Cocke County, TN, he was retired from Burlington Industries.

Mr. Clemmons was the son of the late David and Linnie Margaret Norwood Clemmons.

Surviving are his wife, Mary Wilburn Clemmons of the home; daughters, Deborah Ann Clemmons of the home and Melissa Lynn Moore of Enka; sons, John Keith Clemmons of Leicester, James David Clemmons and Buford Jake Clemmons both of the home; 12 grandchildren; sisters, Lily Tweed of Marshall and Maggie Rice of Spindale.

Graveside services will be held at 11 AM Saturday at Ashelawn Gardens of Memory.

The family will receive friends from 7 until 9 PM Friday at Anders-Rice Funeral Home.
