Armstrong, Mabel Rachel
PINNACLE - Mrs. Mabel Rachel Armstrong, 71, of 277 Corner Road, Pinnacle passed away Monday, Jan. 10, 2005, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. She was born Dec. 24, 1933, in Stokes County to John Floyd Rachel and Maggie Elizabeth Moser Rachel. She was a homemaker and of the Baptist faith. Mrs. Armstrong is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law, Teresa and Bill Duggins of Winston-Salem, Sandra Yvonne and Aubrey Ferrell of Pinnacle and Kathy and Marvin Wright of Ararat, Va.; four sons and daughters-in-law, Weldon Harry Armstrong Jr. of Westfield, Ronald Eugene and Kathy Armstrong of Mocksville, John Thomas Armstrong of the home and Jeffery Allen and Nanette Armstrong of Greensboro; two sisters, Vallie Moorefield of Winston-Salem and Sarah Moorefield of Mount Airy; a brother, Roy Rachel, of Pinnacle; 10 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Mrs. Armstrong was preceded in death by her husband, Weldon Harry Armstrong Sr.; her parents; and three sisters, Bessie Rachel, Lucy Logan and Minnie Barnes. A graveside service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 12, at Crestview Memorial Park with the Rev. Gary Kaufman officiating. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 today, Jan. 11, at Cox-Needham Funeral Home. The Armstrong family is being served locally by Cox-Needham Funeral Home of Pilot Mountain.

Beck, Noah Earl
MOCKSVILLE - Mr. Noah Earl Beck, 93, of Liberty Church Road died Monday, Jan. 10, 2005, at Davie Place of Mocksville. Mr. Beck was born June 7, 1911, in Davie County to the late William Asbury and Lula Bowles Beck. He had retired from Heritage Furniture Co. and had been a farmer. Mr. Beck was the oldest member of Bear Creek Baptist Church and a former member of Liberty Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Zola Dorothy Anthony Beck; three brothers, Rufus Beck, Alfred Beck and Walt Beck; and two sisters, Mary Mitchell and Ruth Pennington. Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Carol (Jimmy) Atwood of Mocksville; two sons, W.A. (Brenda) Beck of Mocksville and Fred (Judy) Beck of Harmony; six grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a stepgreat-grandchild. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 12, at Bear Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. Lee Cook officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the service. Interment will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today, Jan. 11, at Eaton Funeral Home and other times at the home of his daughter, 294 Liberty Church Road. The family requests that memorials be considered for Bear Creek Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, c/o Caroline Beck, 222 Speer Road, Mocksville, NC 27028.

Brandon, Irene Shumaker
Irene Shumaker Brandon died Friday, Jan. 7, 2005, in the Phillips Healthcare Center at Salemtowne, where she had been a resident since 1995. She moved there from Clemmons, where she enjoyed golf and participating in the Hanes Mall Walkers program. She was a member of Clemmons Moravian Church. Our family appreciates the many remembrances that were sent regularly by the Women's Fellowship. From 1941 to 1985 she lived in King, taught eighth-grade classes and earth sciences, played bridge and was an active member of King Moravian Church. She helped start the Meals-on-Wheels program for Stokes County seniors. She moved to King from Union Grove, where she taught health, coached a winning girl's basketball team and met her husband, Brack Brandon, who died in 1981. She graduated from Appalachian State Teachers' College with a bachelor of science degree in physical education. She was born in the New Hope community of Iredell County on Nov. 17, 1913, third of nine children in the family of Robert Lee and Gladys Myers Shumaker. Surviving are daughter Carole Brandon of Winston-Salem; brother Lee (Marie) Shumaker of Statesville; sisters Nellie (Frank) Lott of Florence, S.C., Bobbie (Frank) Tracy of Richmond, Va., and Kathleen Ellenburg of Burlington; and many nieces and nephews whom she loved very much. Mabel and Jim Brandon of Winston-Salem and Betty Ann Vance of Gastonia have been especially caring and helpful. We are grateful to the kind, compassionate staff of the Phillips Healthcare Center and to everyone at Salemtowne whose care and support make possible the daily life of this wonderful community. A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 16, at King Moravian Church. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made in memory of Irene S. Brandon to King Moravian Church, Scholarship For Pre-School, 234 W. Dalton St., King, NC 27021; Clemmons Moravian Church, General Fund, 3560 Spangenburg Ave., Clemmons, NC 27012; or Salemtowne - The Moravian Retirement Community, for the purchase of exercise equipment for the Phillips Health Care Center, Special Care Section, 1000 Salemtowne Drive, Winston-Salem, NC 27106. J.C. Green and Sons Funeral Home is assisting the Brandon family.

Bristol, Eugene Legraund
MOUNT AIRY - Mr. Eugene Legraund Bristol, 76, of 210 W. Lebanon St., Mount Airy, husband of Jeanette Hoover Bristol, passed away Friday, Jan. 7, 2005, at his home. Mr. Bristol was born in McDowell County on Feb. 2, 1928, to the late William and Lillie Greene Bristol. Mr. Bristol graduated from Glen Alpine High School in 1945 and the Asheville School of Technology in 1949. He earned his bachelor's of science degree in pre-med in 1957 and his bachelor's of science degree in pharmacy in 1962 from the University of South Carolina. In 1964, Mr. Bristol accepted a job at Square Pharmacy. After his tenure at Square Pharmacy, he worked at Eckerd Drugs for 13 years, then at Revco Drug Store as pharmacist manager for 13 years. During his career, he served as president of the Surry Pharmaceutical Association. From 1950 to 1952, Bristol served in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict. After his retirement, he earned his real estate license and worked for Garson McMillian Real Estate and Auction Co., Inc., until his health declined. Mr. Bristol was a faithful member of Calvary Baptist Church. He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Jeanette Hoover Bristol of the home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Diane and Tony Stanley of Mount Airy and Wendy and Billy Simpson of Pilot Mountain; two grandchildren, Christopher Matthew Brackins of Greensboro and Kaela Grace Simpson of Pilot Mountain; five stepgrandchildren and a spouse, Randy and Shannon Wood, Matthew Ryan Stanley, Andrew Christian Stanley, Matthew Dwayne Simpson and Andrew Thomas Simpson, all of Mount Airy; a stepgreat-grandson, Blake Wood of Mount Airy; and a brother, Holland Craig Bristol of Marion. In addition to his parents, Mr. Bristol was preceded in death by two sisters, Flava Bristol and Louise Hatcher; and six brothers, Powell Bristol, Edward Bristol, Blake Bristol, Heywood Bristol, Troy Bristol and Harry Bristol. The funeral service was held at 1 p.m. Monday, Jan. 10, at Calvary Baptist Church. The service was conducted by Dr. Wayne Hager, Mr. Billy Simpson and Mr. Harold Stone and burial was in the Skyline Memory Gardens with full military rites conducted by VFW Memorial Honor Guard Post 2019 of Mount Airy and Post 9436 of Pilot Mountain. The family received friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 9, at Calvary Baptist Church. Memorials may be made to Northern Hospice, P.O. Box 1373, Mount Airy, NC 27030 or to Calvary Baptist Church, 314 S. Franklin Road, Mount Airy, NC 27030. Moody Funeral Services of Mount Airy is serving the Bristol family. If I have, in some way during this time, been able to do something to improve the quality of others' lives or possibly brought a smile to your face when you may not have been feeling too well, then I know I have done my job well.

Cappella, Dominick Richard
KERNERSVILLE - Mr. Dominick Richard Cappella, 88, of Kernersville died Saturday, Jan. 8, 2005, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. Mr. Cappella was born Oct. 8, 1916, in Scotch Plains, N.J., to Nicholas Cappella and Florence Guardinie Cappella. A rosary will be said at 7 p.m. today, Jan. 11, at Vogler Reynolda Road Chapel, with a visitation to follow. A funeral Mass will be conducted at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 12, at Vogler Reynolda Chapel by Father Conall McHugh. Interment will follow at Forsyth Memorial Park Cemetery. The family is from Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church. Mr. Cappella was an avid fisherman and gardener and loved to entertain friends and family. Mr. Cappella was an altar boy. He was preceded in death by his parents; a grandson, Thomas Antoni; and a son-in-law, James Antoni. Survivors include his wife of the home Angelina Misilmeri Cappella; two daughters, Patricia Antoni of the home and Florence Dohman of Broken Arrow, Okla.; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; other relatives; and special friends, Phil and Terry DeMarco of New York. The family asks that any memorials be made to Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home.

David, Estelle
Ms. Estelle David was called home to rest following an extended period of illness on Friday, Jan. 7, 2005. She was born in Bennettsville, S.C., to Clara Stevenson and Elmore David Sr. She spent her younger years in Laurinburg and was educated at the Laurinburg Institute. She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister. She is survived by her sons, Herman (Creola) David and Elmore David Jr.; her grandchildren, Willy of Wichita, Kan., Monica Dillio of Greensboro, Anjanetta (Anthony), Reginald, Artiffany, Kim, Donald, Ray, Cindy and Sheton, all of the city, and Sedanus Orr; 21 great-grandchildren; a niece, Hazel Benton of Philadelphia, Pa.; a nephew, Wendel Austin; and a host of relatives and friends. The funeral will be held at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 12, at the Frances S. and Jerry C. Gilmore Memorial Chapel. Family visitation will be from 11 to 11:30 a.m. Wednesday. The family will leave from the home of Herman David, 3827 Leo St. Arrangements are entrusted to and services conducted by Gilmore Funeral Service.

Ellis, James David
ADVANCE - Mr. James David Ellis, 73, of Advance died unexpectedly Sunday, Jan. 9, 2005, at his home. He was born April 7, 1931, in Stokes County to James Douglas and Rosa King Ellis. Mr. Ellis was retired from AT&T Technologies with 34 years of service. He served as a corporal in the U.S. Marine Corps. Mr. Ellis also enjoyed raising beef cattle. He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Lineback Ellis, and a brother, Ed Ellis. He is survived by a daughter, Kim E. Williams and husband, Mark, of Mocksville; a son, Rick Ellis and wife, Kim, of Advance; three grandchildren, Travis Williams of Mocksville and Matthew and John Ellis of Advance; two brothers, Clinton Ellis and Charlie Ellis and wife, Alice, all of Advance; four sisters, Mildred White of Clemmons, Carrie Sue Smith and husband, Buster, Ella Mae Linville and husband, Hugh and Margaret Beauchamp, all of Advance; a sister-in-law, Sue Ellis of Advance; and a number of nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 13, at Hayworth-Miller Kinderton Chapel. Burial will follow at Green Meadows Baptist Church. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Marine Corps League of Winston-Salem, Detachment 1075, 111 Miller St., P.O. Box 5476, Winston-Salem, NC 27113 or a charity of the donor's choice.

Fulton, Sara Ellerbe Covington
Sara Ellerbe Covington Fulton, 82, of Winston-Salem died Monday morning, Jan. 10, 2005, at Forsyth Medical Center. Mrs. Fulton was born March 25, 1922, in Rockingham, a daughter of the late Alec Alexander Covington and the late Sallie Copeland Covington. She was a homemaker and a member of Parkway Presbyterian Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Leroy Fulton, in 2001 and her brother, Herdis Copeland Covington. She is survived by her children, Paul Leroy Fulton Jr. and wife, Vera Vrsecky Fulton, of Winston-Salem, Scott Alexander Fulton and wife, Donna Sides Fulton, of Clemmons and Bette Fulton Williams and husband, Donald Ellis Williams, of Winston-Salem; sisters Emily Covington Williams of Rockingham and Lillian Covington Thrower of Morehead City; and seven grandchildren, Victoria and Holly Fulton of Winston-Salem, Alex and Robert Fulton of Clemmons and Taylor, Reed and Laura Williams of Winston-Salem. The funeral service and entombment will be private. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 12, at Vogler & Sons Main Street Chapel. Memorial contributions may be made to Parkway Presbyterian Church minister's discretionary fund, 1000 Yorkshire Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27106.
