Hicks, Edna Money
Mrs. Edna Money Hicks, 96, died Saturday, July 24, 2004, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. Mrs. Hicks was born Nov. 24, 1907, in Yadkin County to William B. and Sarah Caudle Money. She lived all her adult life in Forsyth County and was a member of Forest Hill Baptist Church. Mrs. Hicks retired from P.H. Hanes Knitting Co. She was preceded in death by her husband, Sidney A. Hicks; and a daughter and son-in-law, Gladys H. Davis and William H. Davis. She is survived by five grandchildren, W. Michael Davis and wife, Maureen of Dobson, Claudia B. Porter and husband, George of Winston-Salem, Donald A. Davis of Winston-Salem, Jimmy Davis and wife, Glenda of Dobson and Chris Davis of Winston-Salem; five great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; and a very special niece, Nell Johnson. A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 27, at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Road Chapel with the Rev. Johnson Gupton officiating. Burial will follow at Woodland Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today, July 26, at the funeral home. Memorials in memory of Mrs. Hicks may be made to Hospice and Palliative CareCenter, 1100-C S. Stratford Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.

Hillian, Michael Lorenzo
CHARLOTTE - Mr. Michael Lorenzo Hillian, 41, of Charlotte passed away unexpectedly Tuesday, July 20, 2004, in Charlotte. He was born May 12, 1963, in Winston-Salem to Calvin Sr. and Nancy Hillian. Michael was a graduate of Northern Forsyth High School, class of 1981, and he attended North Carolina A&T State University. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, the Rev. James Hillian; and his maternal grandparents, Mabel K. Lynch and William H. Lynch Sr. He leaves to cherish his memory a loving wife, Wanda Johnson Hillian; three daughters, Brittny, Jessica and Jasmine; a sister, Teresa (Greg) Phillips; his brothers, Calvin Hillian Jr. and Randall Hillian; his mother-in-law, Danell Johnson; his father-in-law, Harvey (Sandra) Eldridge; his sisters-in-law, Lakenya Eldridge and Aurelia Hill; his paternal grandmother, Eva L. Hillian; special friends, Elijah Stewart, Kevin Cloud, Minister John P. Kee and Harvey Fuquay; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, uncles; other relatives and many friends. A funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday, July 27, at Greater Cleveland Avenue Christian Church. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery. The family visitation will be from noon to 1 p.m. Tuesday, July 27, at the church. Flowers will be accepted at Russell Funeral Home. Hunter, Alma Mae
Mrs. Alma Mae Hunter, 77, of 2025 Green Turf Court, Winston-Salem, passed away Friday, July 23, 2004, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. She was born April 18, 1927, in Goshen, N.Y. She completed her education in Goshen, residing in the home of Annie and Gerald Hutson for 32 years. She had lived in Winston-Salem for 14 years. She leaves to cherish her memories her mother, Alma Hunter; a sister, Mary Hunter; a brother, Charlie Hunter of Middletown, N.Y.; her dearest, loving and devoted friend, Annie Hutson and husband, Gerald Hutson; the devoted children of Annie and Gerald Hutson, Wonda, Felicia and Eric Hutson, whom she helped rear; friends at the Club House, which she attended three times a week; the Vinson and Staten families; and other relatives and friends. A funeral service will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 24, at the Russell Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Dr. James F. Linville officiating. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery. The family visitation will be from 2 to 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. (Russell)

Stanley, Clay Emory
KERNERSVILLE - Mr. Clay Emory Stanley, 93, died Sunday, July 25, 2004, at Oak Summit Nursing Home. Mr. Stanley was born in Forsyth County, a son of Charles Wilburn and Susan Magnolia Fulp Stanley. He was a lifelong member of Pisgah United Methodist Church, where he had served on various boards and committees. Mr. Stanley retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. as a department manager after nearly 40 years of service. He was a member of Talley's Crossing Volunteer Fire Dept. He was preceded in death by his wife, Flavel Robbins Stanley; a sister, Era Stanley Roberson; and his brothers, Ray, Jay, Russell and Wayne Stanley. Surviving are his sons, Jack Gray Stanley and his wife, Leigh of Kernersville and James Wilburn Stanley of Winston-Salem; a close family friend, Debbie Byerly; and two grandchildren, Dwayne and Tonya Stanley of Kernersville. A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 27, at Pisgah United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today, July 26, at Hayworth-Miller-Cain Funeral Home. Memorials may be directed to Pisgah United Methodist Church Cemetery Fund, 2165 Pisgah Church Road, Kernersville, NC 27284.

LEXINGTON - Theresa Bronwich Tyler, 50, died Saturday, July 24, 2004. A funeral will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Davidson Funeral Home Chapel in Lexington.

Barney Jr., Paul Giles
ADVANCE - Paul Giles Barney Jr., 51, of Montclair Drive died Thursday, July 22, 2004, at his home. He was born in Rowan County on Oct. l4, 1952, to Paul Giles (Betty) Barney Sr. of Advance and Blanche Harrison Mathis of Ocala, Fla. He was employed with R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. He was a member of the Elbaville United Methodist Church. Surviving are his wife, Gale Melton Barney of the home; a sister, Brenda Barney of Winston-Salem; a brother, Randy (Jill) Barney of Mocksville; a stepsister, Debbie (Steve) Hege of Advance; two brothers-in-law, Maxie (Vickie) Melton and Tony (Libby) Melton, all of Advance; five nephews, Jeffrey Allen, Christopher Barney, Wesley Melton, Travis Melton and Daniel Melton; a great-nephew, Dean Allen; and two very special friends, Mike Pike and Van Dunn. He was preceded in death by his mother-in-law, Edith Beal Melton, on Dec. 27, 1996; his father-in-law, Troy Wesley Melton, on Dec. 29, 2000; and his grandmother, Paulina S. Barney, on April 12, 2004. The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 25, in Eaton Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Alton Beal officiating. Burial will be in the Advance United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will be at the funeral home from 7 to 9 this evening, July 24. They request memorials be considered for the Davie County Humane Society, P.O. Box 153, Mocksville, NC 27028.

Carter Jr., Clarence William
KING - The Honorable Clarence William Carter Jr. fought a courageous battle with cancer for over two years before leaving this life at his home on Thursday, July 22, 2004. Mr. Carter was born July 28, 1932, the son of Delia Phillips Carter and Clarence William Carter Sr. He lived his life as a Christian man, always saying the right words and living them as a shining example to his family, friends and everyone whose life he touched. With his piercing but kind blue eyes he gave his undivided attention to every person with whom he spoke. Clarence Carter won election as a District Court judge in 1986 and served in this capacity until being appointed a Superior Court judge by then Gov. James B. Hunt in 1993. In 1994, he was elected and served as the Senior Resident Superior Court Judge of District 17B until his retirement on Dec. 31, 2002. Affectionately known as "The Judge, " he served his country in the U.S. Air Force for four years during the Korean War. Afterwards, he earned two degrees from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, receiving his B. A. degree in 1959 and his J.D. degree in 1962. After graduation from law school, he served as law assistant to Federal Judge Johnson J. Hayes, Eugene A. Gordon and L. Richardson Preyer in Greensboro. In 1965 he joined the law practice of Leonard Van Noppen in Danbury, moving to King when Van Noppen became a judge. He cared deeply about his family, his church, his community and the people in it. To highlight a few of his accomplishments, he served as commander of the King American Legion, co-chairman of the King Fire Department Fund Drive, chairman of the Stokes County Good Neighbor Council and attorney and secretary to the original board of directors of the King Water System, Inc. for seven years. He also served as attorney for the Stokes County Board of Education for nine years. Judge Carter was Democratic chairman of the Fifth Congressional District of North Carolina for nine years, and was a delegate to the Democratic National Convention and served at state, county and precinct levels of the Democratic Party. He was licensed to practice law in all North Carolina courts and the U.S. Supreme Court. Judge Carter was also a member of local, state and national bar associations. Clarence Carter is survived by his wife of 39 years, Vivian Tuttle Carter; sons Clarence William Carter III and wife Gloria and Jason Hayes Carter and three grandchildren who always made his eyes light up, Allison, Jessica and William, all of King; two sisters, Edith C. Everest of Winston-Salem and Ann Brown and her husband Joseph S. Brown III of Greensboro; a brother, Michael Greer of King; and two nieces, Amy and Caroline. The family wishes to thank Hospice for the wonderful care he received, enabling him to remain at home in the latter stages of his illness. A celebration of his life will be held at 5 p.m. today, July 24, at Freedom Baptist Church, 1000 Hwy 65 E. in Rural Hall. Judge Carter will lie in state in the church sanctuary for one hour prior to the service. Pastor John T. Byerly, Asst. Pastor Doug Anders and Brother Roger Williams will officiate. The Carter family will receive friends following the service in the church fellowship hall. A graveside service will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, July 25, at King Memorial Park with military honors provided by The King American Legion Post 290. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice and Palliative CareCenter, 1100-C S. Stratford Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27103 or Freedom Baptist Church, P.O. Box 159, Rural Hall, NC 27045. Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home in Rural Hall is assisting the Carter family with arrangements.

Hauser, Louise V.
YADKINVILLE - Louise V. Hauser, 84, died Thursday, July 22, 2004. The funeral will be noon Tuesday at Mackie-Reavis Funeral Home in Yadkinville.

Jacobs, George Otis
COOLEEMEE - George Otis Jacobs, 58, of Riverside Drive died Thursday, July 22, 2004. Visitation will be from 7 to 9 this evening, July 24, at Davie Funeral Service. A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Johnson, Sasha Lynn
PFAFFTOWN - Sasha Lynn Johnson passed away July 22, 2004, at Forsyth Medical Center. She was a beautiful little girl born to Jeremy and Amanda Johnson. Sasha is survived by her parents; her maternal grandparents, the Rev. Thomas and Billie Albert; and paternal grandparents, Bob and Sandy Johnson. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, July 25, at Concord United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the church.
