Armstrong, Jack Lewis
LAKE NORMAN - Mr. Jack Lewis Armstrong, 75, of Lake Norman, formerly of Winston-Salem, passed away Thursday morning, April 8, 2004, at Forsyth Medical Center. Jack was born Jan. 29, 1929, in Norfolk, Va., to Jack and Amalie Armstrong. He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War and was honorably discharged in 1954. Jack was founder of Armstrong Optical Co. in Winston-Salem, where he lived until moving to Lake Norman in 1979. While in Winston-Salem, he was very active in the Little Theatre and the Jaycees and was a past member of the Twin City Club and the Bermuda Run Country Club. At the time of his death, he was co-owner of The Optical Shop in Cornelius. As a young man, Jack worked in Myrtle Beach, S.C., where he made many wonderful friends. He was a member of the Shaggers Hall of Fame and Living Legends and danced in a shagging exhibition in the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta. Jack was a longtime member of the Olympic Club, a Winston-Salem social club and the Lake Norman Social Club, all of the members of whom are lifelong friends. Jack is survived by his loving wife, Lynn Cranfill Armstrong; a daughter, Debbie Lipinsky and her husband, Tripp; his mother, Amalie Armstrong; a brother, Dan Armstrong and his wife, Georganna; and a sister, Nancy Dail and her husband, Jim. He had a grandson, Cory Lipinsky; and several nieces and nephews. Jack was preceded in death by his first wife, Betty "Friz" L. Armstrong; his father, Jack Armstrong; a brother, Bobby; and a sister, Mary Wilson. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, April 11, at Vogler's Reynolda Road Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, 202 CentrePort Drive, Greensboro, NC 27409 or to the charity of the donor's choice. The family extends deepest appreciation to the staff of Forsyth Medical Center, Sempercare Hospital, and to the many friends who supported us with your care and concern.

Benton, Loudoris Parker
INDIAN TRAIL - Mrs. Loudoris Parker Benton, 84, went home to be with her Lord on Wednesday, April 7, 2004, at her residence. Mrs. Benton was born June 10, 1919, in Union County, the daughter of the late Raymond F. and Ruth Morris Parker. Following graduation from Mars Hill Junior College, she began employment with Union County Agriculture Dept., where she met her husband of 44 years, Angus Johnson Benton, who died June 11, 1992. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Franklin Parker and Bobby Parker. Mrs. Benton was the loving mother of two daughters, Miss Brenda Benton of Greenville, S.C., and Mrs. Sandy Benton McNeil and husband, Tom of Winston-Salem, N.C. Also surviving is a brother, Ray Parker of Marshville, N.C. A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 10, at Indian Trail United Methodist Church, where she was a member, with the Rev. Myra Phibbs and the Rev. Angela Marlowe officiating. Interment will follow in Indian Trail City Cemetery. Visitation will follow the committal service at the residence. Also, the family will receive visitors at other times at the residence on Unionville Indian Trail Road. Memorials may be made to Indian Trail United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 130, Indian Trail, NC 28079. McEwen Funeral and Cremation Service of Monroe is serving the family of Mrs. Benton.

Craver, Perry Ader
ARCADIA - Mrs. Perry Ader Craver, 96, better known as "Miss Perry" to her family and friends, passed away Friday morning, April 9, 2004, at her home in the Arcadia community of Davidson County. She was born Feb. 23, 1908, in the Reedy Creek community to David Earl and Eliza Walser Ader. Mrs. Craver was a member of Arcadia United Methodist Church, where she had perfect attendance for 22 years. She was also a member of United Methodist Women's Society, Caring and Sharing Club and Sunday school, and a past member of the church choir and Arcadia Senior Citizens. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jesse B. Craver; an infant son; a daughter, Peggy C. Sowers; two sisters, Ora Ader and Tulia Philips; and four brothers, Otis, Clarence, Bill and Bob Ader. Surviving are a daughter, Jessie Crisp of Arcadia and her family, Damon Davis and his son, Michael Ryan, Brian Davis and his wife, Sherah and their children, Jonathan David and Rebekah Hope; her late daughter, Peggy's family, Wayne Sowers and his wife, Frankie, Glenda S. Nifong and her children, Joe Nifong and Crystal N. Swank and her husband, Derek and their son, Ethan James Swink; a brother, Baxter Ader; and a sister, Verna Ader Harbuck, both of Winston-Salem. A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, April 12, at Arcadia United Methodist Church, by the Rev. Diane Mardsen. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, April 11, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. The family wishes to thank members of Arcadia Family Practice, her special caregiver and good friend, Becky Archie and the many friends and neighbors for their calls, prayers and gifts of food and fellowship. Also a very special thanks to members of Gentiva Home HealthCare and Hospice of Winston-Salem. May God's blessings be on each of you. In lieu-of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice and Palliative CareCenter, 1100-C S. Downing, David F.
FORT WAYNE, Ind. - David F. Downing, age 56, passed away Friday, April 2, 2004, in Fort Wayne. He is survived by his brother, Robert W. Downing of Fort Wayne. A graveside memorial service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 24, 2004, at Forsyth Memorial Park in Winston-Salem, N.C.

Fox, James Loy
BANNER ELK - Mr. James Loy Fox, 91, of Banner Elk died Thursday, April 8, 2004. A funeral will be 4 p.m. Sunday at Clarks Creek Seventh Day Advent Church in Banner Elk. Austin & Barnes Funeral Home of Boone is handling the arrangements.

Gordon, Clint Lee
THOMASVILLE - Clint Lee Gordon, infant, died Thursday, April 8, 2004. A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Hughes Grove Baptist Church Cemetery. J.C. Green & Sons of Thomasville is handling the arrangements.

Hylton, Helen Lois
Mrs. Helen Lois Hylton, 80, of Winston-Salem died Friday, April 9, 2004, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. She was born July 14, 1923, in Indianapolis, Ind., to Fred and Eva Gates Eastwood. She was a member of College Park Baptist Church. Survivors include her husband, Delmer P. Hylton of the home; a son, James A. Hylton of Winston-Salem; two daughters, Deborah Anne Slingluff of Baltimore, Md., and Paula L. Hylton of Richmond, Va.; four grandchildren; a brother, Fred Eastwood of Fort Myers, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, April 12, at Forsyth Memorial Park Mausoleum Chapel by the Rev. Ramon Smith. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice and Palliative CareCenter, 1100-C S. Stratford Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.

Lee, Vera Mae Baldwin
SHELBY - Mrs. Vera Mae Baldwin Lee, 71, of 2316 New House Road in Shelby died Wednesday, April 7, 2004, at M.D. Anderson Hospital in Houston, Texas. Mrs. Lee was born Feb. 10, 1933, in Rutherford County. She was a 1954 graduate of Shelby Hospital School of Nursing. She was retired. She was a member of Lawndale First United Methodist Church and a lifetime member of United Methodist Women. She was a helpmate and supporter of her husband who ministered to various congregations in the Western North Carolina Conference of United Methodist Church. She was predeceased by her father and mother, Claude D. Baldwin and Grace Nance Baldwin; and three brothers, C.D. Baldwin, Clyde Baldwin and Lawrence Baldwin. Surviving are her husband of 49 years, the Rev. Edward Daves Lee; a son, Michael Lee of Shelby; her daughters, Teresa Lee (Kenneth) Olsen of Shelby and Susan Lee (Scott) Morgan of Kernersville; her brothers, Charles Baldwin of Forest City, Earl Baldwin of Ellenboro, Bobby Baldwin of Chesapeake, Va., Glenn Baldwin of Boiling Springs and Johnny Baldwin of Virginia Beach, Va.; her sisters, Magonia Prevette of Winston-Salem, Mavis Dail of Newport News, Va., and Dorothy Huffstetler of Kings Mountain; three grandchildren, Laura Grace Olsen, Jessica Lee Morgan and Kirby Elizabeth Morgan; and numerous nieces and nephews. A funeral servi-ce will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 11, at Polkville United Methodist Church with the Rev. Bill Smith, the Rev. David Reep and the Rev. Loy Kennedy officiating. The body will lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service. Interment will be at Cleveland Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today, April 10, at Stamey Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.

Martin, John Paul
Mr. John Paul Martin, 66, a resident of 758 Shady Grove Church Road, Winston-Salem, died Thursday evening, April 8, 2004, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. He was born Aug. 7, 1937, in Stanly County, a son of the late Boliver Braxton Martin and Mary Edith Deaton Martin. He retired with more than 30 years of service with the Army National Guard. Mr. Martin was a member of First United Methodist Church of Thomasville, where he was also a member of the choir and a former member of the administrative board. He was also a former member of the "Voices of Brotherhood." On Aug. 16, 1959, he marriage Faye Williams, who survives of the home. Also surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Ginger Fuller and husband, Daren, of Thomasville; a son, Brent Martin and wife, Sue, of Wallburg; a brother, B.B. Martin Jr. of Troy; his grandchildren, Jason Smith, Christopher Martin, Mikala Martin and Brett Fuller; and a great-grandchild, Delaney Smith. A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, April 12, at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jack G. Stratas and the Rev. Marsden Kitley officiating. Burial will follow in Holly Hill Memorial Park Cemetery. Mr. Martin will remain at J.C. Green & Sons Funeral Home in Thomasville until taken to the church 30 minutes prior to the service. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home Sunday, April 11, and other times at the home. The family requests that memorials be directed to First United Methodist Church, 100 E. Sunrise Ave., Thomasville, NC 27360.
