William Moore
High Point - William Samuel 'Dub' Moore, 71, of 415 Cedar St. died July 26, 2000, at High Point Regional Hospital, where he was a patient two weeks.
He was born in Spencer, a son of Bertha Moore Griffin, who preceded him in death. He was a resident of High Point the majority of his life and was a former employee of The Lilly Co. and High Point Face Veneer. He was of the Baptist faith. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Brenda Moore Shannon May 9, 1997; and two sisters, Virginia Moore Diggs and Willie Mae Craven.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Dorothy Gibson Moore, of the residence; a daughter, Ms. Barbara Moore; two sons, William S. Moore Jr. and his wife, Janell, and James D. Moore and his wife, Kathy, all of High Point; 11 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a niece, Ernestine Moore of High Point; his mother-in-law, Mrs. Lillie Mae Wilson of High Point; and other relatives and friends.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Haizlip Funeral Chapel by the Rev. Lawrence Curtis. Burial will be in Oakwood Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home and other times at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. James D. Moore, 1730 Waverly St.
Haizlip Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Blanch Swink
Archdale - Mrs. Blanch Cranford Swink, 81, of 6150 Pinebrook Drive, formerly of Shell Road, died July 26, 2000, at High Point Regional Hospital.
She was born Jan. 13, 1919, in Davidson County, a daughter of Lindsay and Louise Walker Cranford. She was a resident of Davidson County the majority of her life. She was of the Baptist faith. She was a former employee of Wrenn Hosiery Mill and a homemaker. On Feb. 22, 1936, she married Carlie 'Carl' White Swink, who preceded her in death June 18, 1989. She also was preceded in death by a daughter, Mrs. Edith Mashburn; and two sons, Ricky Lee Swink and Raymond Ashley Swink.
Surviving are four daughters, Mrs. Rhoda Everhart of Lenior, Mrs. Charles (Peggy) Loman Sr. of High Point, Mrs. Thurman (Shirley) Smith of Archdale and Mrs. Ricky (Sandy) Pope of Thomasville; six sons, Gary Carlon Swink of Lexington, Wayne Swink and his wife, Bonnie, of Calabash, Steve Swink and his wife, Margaret, Donald Swink and his wife, Pat, George Swink and his wife, Connie, and Dwayne Swink, all of Thomasville; a sister, Mrs. Zola Cranford Robbins of Asheboro; a brother, Julian Cranford of Thomasville; 31 grandchildren; 51 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be 4 p.m. Saturday at J.C. Green & Sons Chapel, Thomasville, by the Rev. Bobby Blackburn. Burial will be in Holly Hill Memorial Park Cemetery, Thomasville. Visitation will be 7-9 tonight at the funeral home and other times at the residence.
She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother and a dear friend to all that knew her.

Ronald Wright Sr.
Randleman - Ronald Gyles Wright Sr., 73, died July 26, 2000, at Randolph Hospital in Asheboro.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Pugh Funeral Home Chapel. Visitation will be 7-9 tonight at the funeral home.

S. Brown
Mount Pleasant, S.C. - Dr. Stuart 'Pockets' Brown, 72, formerly of Fairview Drive, Lexington, died July 28, 2000.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday at First United Methodist Church, Lexington. Visitation will be 6:30-8:30 tonight at Piedmont Funeral Home.

Ralph Gurley
High Point - Ralph Gurley, 78, of 3418 Haley's Way died July 27, 2000.
He was born Aug. 12, 1921, in Sanford, a son of W.H. and Myrtle Kimrey Gurley. He was a graduate of Lenoir Rhyne College. He was associated with Drexel Heritage Furniture Co. in the Human Resources Department for 44 years. For several years he resided in Morganton, prior to returning to High Point 18 years ago where he retired in 1989. A veteran of World War II he served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy and was commander of the USSLST31. He was an avid lover of golf, tennis and all other sports. He loved building bird houses. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church and the Christian Life Sunday School Class. On Dec. 23, 1947, he married Kathryn Thackston, who preceded him in death Oct. 20, 1998. He also was preceded in death by a daughter, Elizabeth 'Libby' Gurley.
Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Kathy Edwards and her husband, Clint, of Greensboro; a son, Jim Gurley and his wife, Beth, of Burlington; a sister, Mrs. Emily Womble of Sanford; and five grandchildren, Emily and Paul Edwards, Meredith Gurley, Kathryn and Sara Gurley.
Memorial service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at First Presbyterian Church by the Rev. R. Scott Woodmansee and the Rev. Lisa M. Mullen. Burial will be in Guilford Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be at the home of his daughter, 1821 Bull Run Court, Adam's Farm, Greensbor and 6-8 Monday at the residence of his son, 607 New Bern Court, Burlington.
Memorials may be directed to Bible League, 16801 Van Dam Road, South Holland, Ill. 60473 or First Presbyterian Church, 918 N. Main St., High Point, N.C. 27262 or to the American Cancer Society, 4-A Oak Branch Drive, Greensboro, N.C. 27407.

David Hale
High Point - David Emerson Hale, 57, of 504 Baker Road died July 28, 2000, at High Point Regional Hospital.
He was born Oct. 7, 1942, in Guilford County, a son of Clarence E. and Esther Ruth Hale. He was a lifelong resident of High Point and he was employed with Hale's Sample Shop. He was a member of Archdale United Methodist Church and the George B. Elder Sunday School Class. On April 12, 1963, he married the former Sandra Kennedy, who survives of the residence.
Also surviving are a daughter, Julie H. Bryson and her husband, Dr. Scott Bryson, of Thomasville; his father of High Point; a brother, Arnold J. Hale and his wife, Millie, of Archdale; a sister, Patricia H. Thomas and her husband, Douglas, of High Point; two grandsons, Caleb and Joshua Bryson; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral will be 4 p.m. Sunday at Archdale United Methodist Church by the Rev. Mary John Dye and the Rev. Harold Shives. Burial will be in Guilford Memorial Park Cemetery. The body will be at Cumby Family Funeral Service, Archdale, until placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the service. Visitation will be 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home.
Pallbearers will be Norman Kennedy, the Rev. Devon Ruth, Dean Ruth, Douglas Thomas, Charles Kennedy and Eddie Oakley. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the George B. Elder Sunday School Class.

Rev. C. Haworth
High Point - The Rev. Cecil E. Haworth, 98, died July 27, 2000, at the Friends Homes in Greensboro.
He was born May 2, 1902, in New Sharon, Iowa, a son of Sylvanus and Emma Lewis Haworth. He received his undergraduate degree at William Penn College and graduate degrees at New York Theological Seminary and at Boston University School of Theology. He was in the Quaker ministry 60 years; 34 years at the High Point Friends Meeting and 15 years with Jamestown Friends Meeting. He was a lifetime member of the High Point Kiwanis Club, a member of the Jamestown Historic Society and was active in the civic affairs of the community.
Surviving are his wife of 71 years, Esta Bedford Haworth of Friends Homes; two daughters, Mrs. Richard (Beverly) Kemp of Greensboro and Mrs. Marjorie Blair of High Point; a son, Howard H. Haworth and his wife, Patricia, of Charlotte; a sister, Mrs. Helen White of Natick, Maine; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Memorial service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at High Point Friends Meeting, 800 Quaker Lane, by the Rev. Linda Selleck and the Rev. Victor Murchison. Visitation will be at the church following the service.

Billy Livengood Sr.
Lexington - Billy 'Bill' Leonard Livengood Sr., 62, of 263 College Lane died at 4:15 p.m. July 27, 2000, at his residence after a three month struggle with lung cancer.
Funeral will be 4 p.m. Sunday at Fork Baptist Church. Visitation will be 2-3 p.m. Sunday at the church.

James Rickert
Dallas, Ga. - James R. Rickert, 69, of 440 Paulding Lane died July 25, 2000.
Funeral was held Friday at Clark Funeral Home Inc., 4373 Atlanta Highway, Hiram.

Annie Strickland
Randleman - Annie Minor Strickland, 69, of 3277 Flynt Road, Liberty died July 28, 2000, at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital.
Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Monday in Guilford Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 7-9 p.m. Sunday at Pugh Funeral Home.

Homer Haithcock
Greensboro - Homer Plato Haithcock Sr., 59, of Greensboro died July 28, 2000, at Wesley Long Hospital.
He was a former member of Beaver Dam Baptist Church and attended Good Hope Baptist Church. He was also a U.S. Army veteran who served in Korea.
He is survived by his wife, Shelby B. Haithcock, of the home; his son, Homer Haithcock Jr. of Greensboro; his sister, Lillie Mae Haithcock of Roseboro, N.C.; his brother, Orvis B. Haithcock and his wife, Carol, of Greensboro; his sister-in-law, Marie Haithcock, of Roseboro; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Monday at Good Hope Baptist Church. Burial will be at Lakeview Memorial Park. The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. today at Hanes-Lineberry Vanstory Street Chapel and other times at the residence.

W. Wade Land Sr.
High Point - W. Wade Land Sr., 79, a resident of 6149 Mendenhall Place, died July 28, 2000, in High Point Regional Hospital.
He was born Nov. 30, 1920, in Guilford County, a son of Lester Talmadge and Sally Smith Land. He had been a resident of High Point all his life and was a retired employee of Drexel Heritage, Inc. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army. On June 8, 1946, he was married to the former Hazel Pearson, who survives of the home.
Also surviving are one son, Bill Land and his wife, Margie, of Hoover, Ala.; three sisters, Mary Ruth Millis of Burlington, Millie Wells of Spencer and Marion Kelly of Plymouth, Minn.; four brothers, Harry Land of Portsmouth Va., Leroy Land of Longview, Texas, Ira Land of Kansas City, Mo., and Thomas Land of Kannapolis. He was preceded in death by a brother, Lester Talmadge Land Jr., and a sister, Irene Montgomery.
Graveside service and interment will be 2 p.m. Monday at the Floral Garden Park Cemetery. Visitation will be at the Cumby Family Funeral Service in Archdale 7-8:30 p.m. today.

Isiah Middleton
High Point - Infant Isiah Middleton of 809 Mark Street died at birth July 28, 2000.
He was the only child of Maurice and Sarah Staggers Middleton.
Surviving relatives in addition to his parents are his maternal grandmother, Evangelist Jeanette Thomas; paternal grandparents, Mrs. Gloria Middleton and Mr. and Mrs. Prince (Theresa) Middleton, all of High Point; maternal great-grandmother, Mrs. Martha Wilson; paternal great-grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry (Janie) Mitchell, all of Beaufort, S.C. There are also aunts, uncles, other relatives and friends.
Funeral will be 1 p.m. today at Community Holiness Church of God, 7609 Horney Road by Evangelist Angeline Sumpter. Burial will follow at Oakwood Memorial Park. The family is at the residence. Haizlip Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Lillian Sexton
Denton - Lillian Russell Sexton, 88, of Denton died July 28, 2000.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Monday at Briggs Funeral Home Memorial Chapel. Visitation will be 3-5 p.m. today at Briggs Funeral Home.

John Stallings
High Point - Mr. John Hyman Stallings, 43, a resident of 422 S. Elm Street, died July 28, 2000, in High Point Regional Hospital.
He was born on May 29, 1957, in Pitt County, a son to Clyde and Essie Whitehurst Stallings.
Surviving are his mother and stepfather, Essie and Tommy E. Jones of 365 Odell Owen Road in Lexington; one sister, Susan S. Plott of Lexington; one stepsister, Deana Nelson of Jacksonville, Fla.; one stepbrother, Gene Jones of Jacksonville, Fla.; and one niece, Holly R. Plott of Lexington.
Graveside services will be conducted Monday at 2 p.m. in Guilford Memorial Park Cemetery by the Rev. Melvin B. Anderson. The family will receive friends at Sechrest Funeral Service on E. Lexington Avenue in High Point 7-8:30 p.m. today and at other times at the home of his mother.

Mary Vance
Dayton, Ohio - Mary Vance, 85, died July 28, 2000, at Hospice of Dayton, Ohio, after a brief illness. She had been a resident of the Dayton area for 10 years.
Born May Elizabeth Hughes in Raleigh, Miss., on June 10, 1915, she was the youngest child of Emma Katherine Kelly Hughes and Judge William Houston Hughes. She was preceded in death by her parents, her sisters, Clyda Hester and Sarah Flowers, and her brothers, Drs. L.H. 'Red' Hughes and Lauch Hughes. When she was nine, her family moved to Jackson, Miss., where she graduated from high school and, in 1935, from Millsaps College with a B.A. in English. She married James Thomas Vance of Jackson on Sept. 4, 1942, who also predeceased her.
Survivors include their only child, Jim Jr., and their daughter-in-law Bronna, who reside in Beavercreek, Ohio; and nieces Lucia Flowers Gilliland, Jackie Hughes Meena and Jean Hughes Bumpas.
Mr. and Mrs. Vance lived in the Greensboro-High Point-Jamestown area from 1955 until 1990, excepting 1962-64, when Mr. Vance's work took the family to Woodstock, Ontario, Canada. In 1990, they moved to Dayton to be near their son and daughter-in-law. Mrs. Vance was a Christian.
Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Grace United Methodist Church, 1001 Harvard Blvd., Dayton, Ohio 45406. Friends and family may gather starting at 1 p.m. in the Ladies Parlor.In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to Grace Church or the charity of one's choice. Funeral arrangements in care of Tobias Funeral Home, 648 Watervliet Avenue, Dayton, Ohio.

Gaither Collins Sr.
High Point - Gaither David Collins Sr., 85, of High Point Care Center, formerly of Bowen Drive in Archdale, died July 29, 2000, at the nursing facility. He was born Aug. 2, 1914, in Yadkin County to Edward and Rosa Vestal Collins. He had been a resident of the Archdale area most of his life and was retired from Silver Craft Furniture Industries. He was a member of Calvary Church of the Nazarene in High Point where he had taught Sunday school and was a member of the Willing Workers Sunday School Class. He was married to the former Irma Chandler, who preceded him in death April 3, 1995. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Frances Bartlett and her husband, Donald, of Hickory; a son, David Collins and his wife, Sharon, of Archdale; a sister, Mrs. Lola Autrey of Lillington; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Funeral is 11 a.m. Tuesday at Calvary Church of the Nazarene by the Rev. Billy H. Ring and the Rev. Brian Powell. Burial will be in Floral Garden Park Cemetery. Visitation is 7 to 8:30 tonight at Cumby Family Funeral Service in Archdale. Memorials may be directed to the Nazarene Christian Academy Building Fund at Calvary Church of the Nazarene, 622 W. Fairfield Road, High Point, N.C. 27263.

Jay Grant
High Point - Jay Dennis Grant, 40, of 901 Parliament St. was reborn into heaven July 29, 2000. He was a devoted father, husband and friend and sadly leaves behind his wife and children who deeply love him and will miss him. He was born Oct. 22, 1959. A 19-year veteran of the High Point Fire Department, where he had achieved the rank of battalion chief. The Brotherhood of Firemen became his extended family, whom he loved and had great pride in. For his work in fire service, he was named one of North Carolina's outstanding public servants. In addition, he worked at Randy's Outdoor Shop. An avid hunter and fisherman, he respected and enjoyed nature. He enjoyed spending time with his family in outdoor activities and introduced them to outdoor sports. He taught his children the value of God's creations. He was a volunteer at Oak View Elementary School and High Point Little League. He was active with his family in Cub Scouting and was an active member of First United Methodist Church. Preceding him in death was his father, James Kelly Grant. Surviving are his wife, Vickie Idol Grant of the home; two sons, Jordan Dale Grant, 9, and Austin Jay Grant, 8; his mother, Patricia Proctor Grant; a sister, Kay Tucker; a brother, Kevin Grant; and a grandmother, Margaret Proctor. Members of the High Point Fire Department will be honorary pallbearers. A memorial service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at the First United Methodist Church by the Rev. Don Lloyd and the Rev. Mark Curtis and the High Point Fire Department Honor Guard. Visitation will follow at the church fellowship hall and at other times at the residence. Memorials may be directed to the Jay Grant Children's Educational Fund, 901 Parliament St., High Point, N.C., 27265. Harold C. Davis Funeral Home is assisting the family.

Robert Lassiter
High Point - Robert Griffin Lassiter, 68, of 1122 Tabor St., died July 29, 2000, at High Point Regional Hospital. He was born May 17, 1932, in Guilford County, a son of Griffin Hill and Clara Mae Morris Lassiter. He was a retired 20-year veteran of the U.S. Air Force and also retired after 20 years of service with the city of High Point's Parks and Recreation Department. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, John Grayson Lassiter. On Jan, 12, 1990, he married to Helen Ward, who survives of the home. Also surviving are, three stepdaughters, Mrs. Colin (Patsy) Waldroup of Silver Valley, Mrs. Randall (Barbara) McGee of Archdale and Mrs. Banaras (Katie) Kahn of High Point; two stepsons, Grayson Ward and his wife, Eileene, of High Point and Richard Ward and his wife, Elaine, of Thomasville; five sisters, Mrs. Woodrow (Mary) Sneed of Cleveland, Okla., Mrs. Paul (Peggy) Brewer of Lynchburg, Va., Mrs. Charles (Cynthia) Clapp of Jamestown, Mrs. Polly Gibson and Mrs. Paul (Ruth) Walton of High Point; 14 stepgrandchildren and 16 stepgreat-grandchildren. Funeral is 2 p.m. Tuesday at Landmark Baptist Church by the Rev. Amos Mashburn. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The body will be at Sechrest Funeral Service on E. Lexington Avenue until placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Visitation will be 7 to 8:30 Tuesday at Sechrest Funeral Service.

Charles Lovern
High Point - Charles Henry Lovern, 77, of High Point Care Center, formerly of 306 Phillips Avenue, died July 30, 2000, at the nursing facility. He was born March 5, 1923, in New River, Va., a son of Jesse Lee and Cora Lee Underwood Lovern. He had been employed by Custom Processing Inc. and was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He was of the Baptist faith. On Sept. 4, 1941, he married the former Rebecca Morris, who survives of the home. He was preceded in death by a son, Frankie Lee Lovern. Also surviving are six daughters, Barbara Goins and her husband, Wayne, of Thomasville, Brenda Lockhart and her husband, C.W., of Trinity, Linda Deckard and Parnela Parrish, both of Kernersville, Lois Jeffery of Archdale and Jewel Bowman of High Point; a son, Billy Ray Lovern of Thomasville; a sister, Elizabeth Keister of Radford, Va.; a brother, Edward Lovern of Barren Springs, Va.; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Elsie Heimberger of Biloxi, Miss.; 15 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. Funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday in the chapel of Cumby Funeral Service in High Point. Burial will be in Floral Garden Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

J. Pickenpack Sr.
High Point - Joseph Pickenpack Sr., 83, of SunBridge of the Triad died July 28, 2000, at the home. His earthly pilgrimage began March 14, 1917, in Bessemer City. Our beloved moved from his earthly body to a home not made by hands. He was the son of Sarah (Sally) Friday Pickenpack and Robert Pickenpack. He spent most of his life in New Jersey. He worked several jobs as a truck driver, farmer, baker and at Adam Mills, where he retired. He returned to High Point to reunite with family and friends. He was of the Baptist faith, but attended Congregational United Church of Christ with family, under the leadership of the Rev. Suzanne G. Brooks. His wife, Mae D. Pickenpack, preceded him in death Feb. 8, 1990, and so Frankie Pickenpack preceded him in death July 12, 1996. Survivors, whose lives were enriched by his presence, include Joseph Pickenpack Jr. of Patterson, N.J.; Julia A. Harmon of High Point; Deloris Benion of Washington, D.C.; Clearence R. Pickenpack of Tillery, Patricia Edwards of High Point; Betty Emerson of High Point; Dorothy Pickenpack of Thomasville; Kathey Pickenpack and Sherlean Pickenpack, both of High Point; and a host of grandchildren. Funeral will be 3 p.m. Tuesday at Congregational United Church of Christ. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery. Visitation will be 2:30 to 3 Tuesday at the church. Hoover's Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
