Salisbury – Joseph Daniel Lockhart, 12, died Sept. 16, 1999, in Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center as the result of an auto accident. Funeral will be 3 p.m. Monday at Lyerly Funeral Home’s James C. Lyerly Chapel in Salisbury. Visitation will be 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Wilbur Maner
High Point - Wilbur Davis Maner, 80, of 606 Huntington Drive died at 3:15 p.m. Sept. 16, 1999, at the Beverly Health Care Center. He was born Sept. 19, 1918, in Davidson County to Floyd Davis Maner and Annie Belle Meredith Maner. He was a retired employee of Apac Inc. and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a member of Prospect United Methodist Church. On Dec. 2, 1939, he married Miss Odessa Curry, who survives of the home. Other survivors include a daughter, Ms. Kay S. Maner of the home; a son, Barry P. Maner of Kernersville; two sisters, Mrs. A. Juanita Gray of High Point and Mrs. Jim (Annie Lois) Tysinger of Thomasville; a brother, John K. Maner of Thomasville; two grandchildren, Terrie Lynn Maner Dees and Phillip Paul Maner; and a great-granddaughter, Cherie Lynn Dees. Funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday at J.C. Green and Sons Chapel by the Rev. Karl Kelly and the Rev. Ardis Payne. Burial will be in Rich Fork Baptist Church Cemetery. Visitation will be 7-9 tonight at the funeral home. Memorials may be directed to Prospect United Methodist Church, 5553 Prospect Street, Archdale, N.C. 27263 or to Rich Fork Baptist Church, 3993 Old Highway 29, Thomasville, N.C. 27360.

Lorraine Smith
Winston-Salem – Lorraine Sink Smith, 74, of Shady Grove Church Road died at 8:15 a.m. Sept. 17, 1999, at the home of her daughter, Bonnie Loflin, in Midway. She was born Dec. 7, 1924, in High Point to Andrew David and Lecta Mae Swaim Sink. She was retired from Carolina Underwear Inc. and was a member of Canaan United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robah Sheats Smith Jr., in December 1998; two brothers, Grayson and Devoe Sink; and a sister, Blanche Hussey. Surviving are two daughters, Bonnie Loflin and her husband, Rod, and Barbara Boger and her husband, Gray, all of Midway; four grandchildren, Kevin Loflin and wife, Amy, of Wilson, and Chad Loflin, Kyle and Jill Boger, all of Midway; two great-grandchildren, Parker and Morgan Loflin, both of Wilson; and a sister, Catherine Peace of Trinity. Funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Canaan United Methodist Church by the Rev. Wade Childress. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be 6:30-8:30 tonight at Davidson Funeral Home, Hickory Tree Chapel, and at other times at the home. Memorials may be directed to Canaan United Methodist Church, 1760 Shady Grove Church Road, Winston-Salem, N.C. 27107 or Hospice of Davidson County, 524 S. State Street, Lexington, N.C. 27292.

Nellie Snider
Denton – Nellie Gallimore Glover Snider, 90, died Sept. 16, 1999. Funeral will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Briggs Funeral Home Memorial Chapel. Visitation will be 6-8 tonight at the funeral home.

Dorothy Winegar
Lexington – Dorothy Lee Winegar, 67, of S. Cecil Street died Sept. 17, 1999, at her home. Funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at Arrington Heights Freewill Baptist Church by the Rev. Doug McGee. Visitation will 6:30-8:30 p.m. Sunday at Davidson Funeral Home and at other times at the home.

Robert Akers
Mount Airy – Robert E. Akers, 74, of 247 Hendricks Circle, died Sept. 17, 1999, at Colonial Care. Funeral will be at 2 p.m. today at Howell Funeral Chapel.

Elizabeth Allen
Jacksonville, Fla. – Mrs. Elizabeth Moody Allen, 91, died Sept. 17, 1999, at her home. She was born in Waynesville, N.C., a daughter of Charles Rector and Elizabeth Liner Moody. She was a graduate of Western Carolina University. She retired in 1972 from High Point City Schools after 30 years of teaching. She was a member of Emerywood Baptist Church, where she was a life deacon. On Aug. 15, 1931, she married W. Lawson Allen, who preceded her in death June 1, 1991. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Louise A. Blackwelder and her hus-band, Jim, and Mrs. Billie A. Brewer and her husband, Don; one sister, Mrs. Evelyn McHan; three grandchildren, Jodi B. Stegall and her husband, Chris, Don Brewer Jr. and Tyler Brewer; one adopted grandson, Danny Gray; one great-grandchild; Samantha Stegall; many nieces, nephews, great- and great-great nieces and nephews and wonderful friends. A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Emerywood Baptist Church by Dr. James E. Baucom. Burial will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Greenhill Cemetery in Waynesville. Visitation will be at the church after the service. Sechrest Funeral Home on E. Lex-ington is serving the family. The family requests that memorials be made to Emerywood Baptist Church, 1300 Country Club Drive, High Point, N.C. 27262.

Evelyn Barker
Trinity – Mrs. Evelyn Franks Barker, 84, formerly of 703 Belmont Drive died at 9:30 a.m. Sept. 18, 1999, at GrayBrier Nursing and Retirement Center. She was born April 24, 1915, in Wake County, a daughter of Laddie and Betty Spears Franks. A homemaker, she had been a resident of High Point since 1940 and was a member of Reavis Memorial Baptist Church. On April 12, 1933, she married Walter F. Barker, who preceded her in death on Sept. 28, 1972. Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Dorothy Lowe, Mrs. Barbara Harris and Mrs. J.W. (Arenda) Spoon Jr., all of High Point; one son, Bill D. Barker of High Point; three brothers, Jim, Ernest and Bob Franks, all of Raleigh; seven grandchildren; numerous great- and great-great-grandchildren. A graveside service by the Rev. Darryl R. Love will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Floral Garden Park Cemetery. The family requests that memorials be made to The Alzheimer’s Associa-tion, 3420 Shamrock Drive, Charlotte, N.C. 28215. Cumby Family Funeral Service in Archdale is in charge of arrangements.

Sallie Durham
High Point - Sallie Crotts Durham, 87, of 305 Wrightenberry St. died Sept. 18, 1999, at her residence following several years of declining health. She was born July 6, 1912, in Lex-ington, a daughter of Tom and Mar-garet Crotts. She formerly was employed by Dillard Plastics as a machine operator. She was of the Baptist faith. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lee Powell Durham. Surviving are two daughters, Char-lotte Ann Mullis of High Point and Peggy Joyce Morrison of Thomasville; one son, Richard Wade Crotts of Trinity; two sisters, Ruby Harvey of High Point and Burnley Culler of Norfolk, Va.; seven grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild. Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Harold C. Davis Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Stanley Savage. Entomb-ment will follow in Floral Garden Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 7-9 tonight at the funeral home and at other times at the home of Jimmy and Charlotte Mullis, 305 Wrightenberry St.

Lucille Jones
High Point - Lucille Chapman Jones, 94, of The Evergreens, formerly of Redding Drive, died Sept. 17, 1999, at The Evergreens, where she had lived four years. Funeral arrangements are incom-plete and will be announced by Haizlip Funeral Home.

Vernon Morton
New London – The Rev. Vernon Adam Morton, 92, died Sept. 17, 1999. Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Uwharrie United Methodist Church. Visitation will be 6-7:30 tonight at Briggs Funeral Home in Denton.

Ross Phipps
McLeansville – E. Ross Phipps, 89, of 1866 Mount Hope Church Road, died Sept. 17, 1999, at Moses Cone Hospital in Greensboro. He was a native of Guilford County. He was a farmer and retired from the Guilford County Sheriff’s Department, where he was captain of the civil di-vision. He was a member of Retired North Carolina Peace Officers As-sociation. He was a member of Ala-mance Presbyterian Church, where he was a former elder and deacon of the church. He also was a prisoner of war in Germany in World War II. He was captured in December 1944 and li-berated on May 8, 1945. He was a member of Greater Greensboro Chapter of POWs, and he was a 44th combat engineer. He was awarded the Purple Heart while in the United States Army. He was a former member of Buena Vista Lodge No. 21 and was a member of Odd Fellows and Sons of Confederate Veterans in the Colonel John Sloan Camp 290. He was a former member of McLeansville School Ad-visory Committee. He was preceded in death by a son, William Ross Phipps. Surviving are his wife, Dorothy Coble Phipps of the home; two daughters, Betsy Ramey and her husband, Tom, of McLeansville and Becky Askew and her husband, Worth, of McLeansville; one sister, Effie Whittle of Greensboro; one brother, Paul Phipps of McLeansville; a grandson, Trey Askew of Raleigh. Funeral will be at 2:30 p.m. Monday at Alamance Presbyterian Church, with burial to follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be 6-8 tonight at Forbis and Dick North Elm Chapel in Greensboro. Memorials may be made to Ala-mance Presbyterian Church Cemetery Fund or to Drinkard Chapel Fund, 4000 Presbyterian Road, Greensboro, N.C. 27406.

Mary Bowers
Thomasville – Mrs. Mary Louise “Cindy” Warner Bowers, 73, of 151 Forest Park Court died at 12:35 p.m. Sept. 20, 1999, at Beverly HealthCare. She was born June 22, 1926, in Davidson County, a daughter of Robert Vance and Mamie Lindsay Miller Warner. She was a lifelong resident of Davidson County. She was last employed with Griffith Heating and Air Conditioning and was a licensed Realtor. She was a member of West End United Methodist Church. Surviving are a son, Tony Bowers of the home; three sisters, Miss Pearl Warner of Thomasville, Mrs. Roy (Brownie) Stutts of Newberry, S.C., and Mrs. John (Helen) Clifton of Raleigh; three brothers, Willie V. Warner of Statesville, James Warner and Walter Warner, both of Thomasville; two granddaughters, Miss Airel Bowers and Miss Toni Bowers; and a great-grandson, Chance Bowers. She was preceded in death by a sister, Mrs. Catherine Parrish and two brothers, Jeff Warner and John Warner. Funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at J.C. Green & Sons Chapel by the Rev. Gregory B. Gordon. Burial will be in Calvary United Church of Christ Cemetery. Visitation will be 7-9 tonight at the funeral home and other times at the residence. Memorials may be directed to the building fund of West End United Methodist Church, 600 Lexington Ave., Thomasville, N.C. 27360.

Robert Carlton
Thomasville – Robert Lee Carlton, 68, died Sept. 19, 1999. Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday in Mt. Lebannon Baptist Church Cemetery. Ridge Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Annie Hughes
Archdale – Mrs. Annie Trotter Hughes, 92, formerly of 625 Ashland St. died Sept. 19, 1999, at Westwood Nursing Home. Ridge Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Lucille Jones
High Point - Mrs. Lucille Chapman Jones, 94, of the Evergreens Nursing Home died Sept. 17, 1999, at the nursing home, where she resided for the past four years. She was born in Suffolk, Va., a daughter of Curtis and Ada Evelyn Chapman. She resided in High Point most of her life and was a very active member of Congregational United Church of Christ. She was active in community activities, especially the Bethune Branch YWCA and served as president of the Ministers Wives Alliance. For many years, she was a self-employed seamstress. Following the death of her husband, the Rev. J.B. Jones, she relocated to Richmond, Va., to live with her daughter, Ada Amaker. When her daughter died in 1990, she returned to High Point to the home of her granddaughter, Maria Tomlin. Her other daughter, Edna J. Tomlin, also preceded her in death Dec. 19, 1993. Surviving are one granddaughter, Mrs. Maria Tomlin of High Point; one great-grandson, Christopher Tomlin of High Point; one great-great-granddaughter, N’Diaza Tomlin of High Point; one sister, Mrs. Betsy (Percy) Jenkins of Suffolk; and several nieces, nephews, among them, Mrs. Jessie Cross, who was very dear to her. Funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Congregational United Church of Christ by the Rev. Larry Ingram. Burial will be in Carolina Biblical Gardens. Visitation will be 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the church and other times at the residence. Haizlip Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Margaret Klass
Thomasville – Mrs. Margaret Evans Klass, 74, of 203 Liberty Drive died Sept. 19, 1999, at Lexington Memorial Hospital. Funeral will be 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at J.C. Green & Sons Chapel. Visitation will be 7-9 tonight at the funeral home.

Joseph Patterson
High Point - Joseph B. Patterson, 77, of 2206 Porsha Lane died Sept. 20, 1999, at Community General Hospital in Thomasville. Funeral arrangements are incomplete. Sechrest Funeral Home, E. Lexington Avenue, is in charge of arrangements.
