MAIDEN - Ernest Lee Kiser, 75, of 1026 East Main Street, died Jan. 16, 2002. A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church where he was a member. Burial will follow in the Maiden City Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 until 8:30 at Goodin-Drum Funeral Home.
Born in Lincoln County, he was a U.S. Army WWII veteran, worked as a truck driver for Carolina Mills until retirement and was a member of American Legion Post 240, Masonic Lodge #592, and Oasis Temple in Charlotte.
Survivors include his wife, Bryte Michael Kiser; a son, Danny Kiser of Oak Island; a daughter, Linda Kiser Campbell of Columbia, S.C.; six grandchildren, Kelly McDill, Todd Campbell, Michael Kiser, Scott Kiser, Gretchen Kiser, and Brandi Kiser; and eight great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.

Madge Watts
NEWTON - Madge Bernice Daves Watts, 80, of 5418 Startown Road, died Jan. 17, 2002. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Burke Mortuaries. Burial will follow in Maiden City Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service.
Born in Cleveland County, she was a homemaker.
Survivors include her husband, Carl “Dick” Watts; two step-daughters, Margaret “Marty” Street and Darnell Watts Setzer, both of Hickory; a step-son, Danny Dean Watts of Hickory; three step-grandchildren; and one step-great-grandchild.

Eula Trexler
HENDERSONVILLE - Eula Belle Trexler, 97, died Jan. 17, 2002. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Daniel’s Lutheran Church in Lincolnton where her husband served as pastor for many years. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Sunday night from 7 until 9 at Warlick funeral Home.
Born in Faith, she was a teacher for many years in the public school systems in China Grove, Mt. Pleasant, and Lincolnton until retirement. She was the organist and a Sunday School teacher at her church, and served as superintendent of the Light Brigade Children’s Organization in the North Carolina Lutheran Synod. She was president of the Women’s Missionary Society of the Synod, and a member of the national executive board of the Women’s Missionary Society of the Lutheran Church in America.
Survivors include a son, Rev. Edgar R. Trexler of Hendersonville; three grandchildren, David Ray Trexler, Mark Raymond Trexler, and Karen Emily Harrington; and three great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to Daniel’s Lutheran Church, Lenoir-Rhyne College, the Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary in Columbia, S.C.; or the World Hunger Appeal of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, 8765 W. Higgins Rd., Chicago, Ill., 50631.

Charlie Killian
MT. HOLLY - Charlie McCoy Killian, 89, of 14109 Lucia Riverbend Road, died Jan. 16, 2002. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Castanea Presbyterian Church where he was a member. Internment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 until 9 at Woodlawn Funeral Home.
Born in Mecklenburg County, he served in WWII as a member of the U.S. Army’s 385th Infantry Division. He worked for Harrison-Wright Construction Co. for 45 years until retirement and was a member of the Mt. Holly Masonic Lodge #544, and the Oasis Temple in Charlotte. At his church, he served as an elder and trustee.
Survivors include his wife, Amelia Lathan Killian; two daughters, Rhonda Killian Martin of Mt. Holly, and Melanie Killian Jones of Denver; a son, Charlie McCoy Killian of Charlotte; one brother, Jack Killian of Stanley; four sisters, Leona Hawley of Stanley, Minnie Woolwine, Helen Hollar, and Hazel McIntosh, all of Mt. Holly; and six grandchildren, Charlie Killian III, McKenzie Killian, McCoy Martin, Hannah Martin, Siri Jones, and Madeline Jones.
Memorials may be made to Castanea Presbyterian Church Family Life Center; or Castanea Presbyterian Barnabas Ministry, 14815 Lucia Riverbend Hwy., Mt. Holly, N.C. 28120.

Lee Jenkins
Lee Junior Jenkins, 69, of 1202 Pete’s Road, died today, Jan. 18, 2002. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday in the chapel at Warlick Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends Saturday night from 7 until 8:30 at the funeral home.
Born in Cherokee County, S.C., he was a U.S. Army veteran, and worked for Vermont American.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy H. Jenkins; one son, Randy Jenkins of Lincolnton; one daughter, Cathy Wilson of Iron Station; five brothers, Avery Jenkins, Earl Jenkins, Darrell Jenkins, and Billy Jenkins, all of Lincolnton, and Clyde Jenkins of Flordia; four sisters, Louise Guiton of Lincolnton, Hazel Canipe of Maiden, Dolly Kennedy of Rockingham, and Patsy Seifert of Denver; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

CROUSE - Edna Sue George, 64, died today, Jan. 18, 2002.

Vane Odell Mahala, 72, of 818 S. Government Street, died Jan. 19, 2002. A funeral service will be held at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Reepsville Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 until 8:30 at Warlick Funeral Home.
Born in Ashe County, he was a U.S. Army veteran who served in the Korean Conflict, and worked in the furniture industry until retirement.
Survivors include his wife, Nannie Belle Scronce Mahala; two brothers, Lawrence Mahala of Maiden and Dean Mahala of Maryland; and one grandchild, Ryan Propst of Lincolnton.

Blanche Lay
CHERRYVILLE - Blanche Cooper Lay, 72, of 121 Milo Neal Road, died Jan. 18, 2002. A funeral service was held Sunday at 2 p.m. in Cone Memorial Chapel of Carpenter’s Funeral Home. Burial followed in City Memorial Cemetery.
Born in Lincoln County, she was a homemaker, and attended Love Valley Baptist Church.
Survivors include two sons, Dennis Eugene Lay and Wayne Allen Lay, both of Cherryville; one brother, J.D. Cooper of Vale; and three grandchildren, Stephanie Lay, William Lay, and Amy Lay.

Julia Renfro
CHERRYVILLE - Julia Scruggs Renfro, 84, of 705 East Academy Street, died Jan. 17, 2002. A funeral service was held Sunday at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church where she was a member. Burial followed in Sandy Run Baptist Church Cemetery in Mooresboro.
Born in Mitchell County, she taught Sunday School at her church and was a retired Gaston County Schools teacher.
Survivors include three brothers, John Renfro of Parkersburg, W. Va., Robert Renfro of Johnson City, Tenn., and Charles Renfro of Melborne, Fla.
Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church Family Life Center, 301 E. First St., Cherryville, N.C. 28021.

Bonnie Mae Shook
HICKORY - Bonnie Mae Engle Poteat Shook, 87, died Jan. 17, 2002. A funeral service was held Sunday at 3:30 p.m. in the chapel of Bass-Smith Funeral Home. Burial followed in Catawba Memorial Park.
Born in Lincoln County, she was retired from Shuford Mills and was a member of Light House Ministries.
Survivors include a daughter, Kathy Brown of Hickory; two sons, Gerald Poteat and Dean Poteat, both of Hickory; four sisters, Meriene Shull of Cherryville, Onie Gant, and Prue Gant, both of Vale, and Agnes Pruett of Lincolnton; two brothers, Ralph Engle of Maiden, and Esper Engle of Lincolnton; 13 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Mary Morris
BESSEMER CITY - Mary Alice Morris, 46, of 114 Tommies Trail, died Jan. 17, 2002. A funeral service was held Sunday at 3 p.m. at Hephzibah Presbyterian Church. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
She was born in Union County.
Survivors include her mother, Eleanor “Tommie” Mauney Morris of the home; her father, Robert T. Morris of Decatur, Ga.; and three sisters, Bobbie Jean Wylie and Eleanor Ann Morris Putnam, both of Cherryville, and Donna Suttles Broome of Lincolnton.

Born in Lincoln County, she was a custodian for Lincoln County Schools until retirement.
Survivors include two sons, Jeffrey D. George of Crouse, and Wayne M. George of Lincolnton; one daughter, Tammy Sue Johnson of Crouse; three brothers, Boyd Dellinger, Ted Dellinger, and Jerry Pope, all of Crouse; two sisters, Margaret Dellinger, and Jane Bost, both of Crouse; and six grandchildren, Michael George, Dennis George, Lacey George, Mack George, Ivey Bridges, and Canon Bridges.

Paul Shuford
BELMONT - Paul Franklin Shuford, 80, of 2511 Acme Road, died Jan. 19, 2002. A funeral service was held at 11 a.m. today in the Woodlawn Chapel of Woodlawn Funeral Home. Internment followed in Greenwood Cemetery.
Born in Gaston County, he was a U. S. Army WWII veteran, a charter member of East Lincoln Missionary Baptist Church, and worked as a machinist for Bendix Inc. until retirement.
Survivors include his wife, Rosetta Davis Shuford; a daughter, Martha S. McHargue of Stanley; three sons, John L. Tinker of Myrtle Beach, S.C., Ernie D. Tinker of Belmont, and Calvin N. Tinker of Stanley; four brothers, Ralph Shuford of Clover, S.C., Lee Shuford of Dennison, Green of Norway, S.C., Betty S. Heafner of Iron Station, and Colene S. Lanier of Lincolnton; eight grandchildren, Tamara Shumaker, Stephanie Tinker, Jodie Tinker, Corey Tinker, Kevin Tinker, Trent Tinker, Lane Tinker, and Christy Creekmur; and three great-grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, Hazel Ware Reynolds; a daughter, Sherry Reynolds of Kings Mountain; two sons, Steve Edward Reynolds of Kings Mountain, and Don Henson of Gaffney, S.C.; two brothers, Lawson Reynolds of Cherryville, and Bishop Reynolds of High Shoals; one sister, Edna Ruth Randolph of Lincolnton; nine grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
