CONOVER - Tessie Sigmon Rector, 90, of Rector Street, died Aug. 31, 2001, at her residence. Born June 9, 1911, in Catawba County, she was a daughter of the late Carp C. and Vertie Winebarger Sigmon. A member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church, she taught Sunday school for 50 years and was a member of Lutheran Women Missionary League. She was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband, George W. Rector; two brothers, Walter Sigmon and Jim Sigmon; and three sisters, including her twin, Tressie Hefner, Wilsie Hoke and Alma Drum. Survivors include four sons and daughters-in-law, Richard B. and Edna Rector, Carl E. and Sue Betty Rector and Jim and Lou Rector of Conover and John and Jannette Rector of Claremont; a daughter and son-in-law, Shirley R. and Flemons Capps of Suwanee, Ga.; 16 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren. The funeral will be conducted by the Revs. Paul D. Birner and Paul D. Sundbom at 4:30 p.m. Sunday at her church. Burial will be in the church cemetery. CONOVER - Roy Ernest Punch, 79, of Cardinal Cove, Irmo, S.C., formerly of Conover Boulevard West, died Aug. 30, 2001, after a period of declining health. Born Jan. 24, 1922, in Catawba County, he was a son of the late Robert W. and Laura Frye Punch. A member of Fairgrove United Methodist Church, he retired from the maintenance department of Catawba Memorial Hospital and served during World War II in Europe and the Pacific. He was preceded in death by an infant brother and Blevin A. Punch. Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Alva Settlemyre Punch; a son and daughter-in-law, Ronald E. and Brenda Moose Punch of Dallas, N.C.; a daughter and son-in-law, Royce L. and Adrian S. Propst of Wheaton, Md.; a sister-in-law, Ada Punch of Hickory; two grandsons, Brad Punch of Hickory and Landon Burgin of Irmo, S.C.; three granddaughters and a grandson-in-law, Amber Burgin and Eva Ellen Burgin of Irmo, S.C., and Emily Punch and Charles Harper of Mount Holly. LINCOLNTON - Garland Milton “Bud” Dellinger, 70, of Dale Avenue, died Aug. 31, 2001, at Gaston Memorial Hospital. Born Nov. 7, 1930, in Lincoln County, he was a son of the late Ambrose and Ocie Harvey. He retired as a driver with Carolina Freight. Survivors include his wife, Peggy Justice Dellinger; a son, Milton Terry Dellinger of Murrells Inlet, S.C.; a daughter, Teresa Waters of Morganton; three stepdaughters, Vivian Darnell of Herndon, Va., Gloria Mauney of Aurora, Colo., and Susan Colvard of Lincolnton; two sisters, Lois Willis of Bessemer City and Thelma Ellis of Gastonia; a granddaughter; six stepgrandchildren; a great-granddaughter; and four stepgreat-grandchildren. FALLSTON - Lois Davis Hastings, 78, of Autumn Care, formerly of Bud Davis Road in Vale, died Aug. 30, 2001, at Valdese General Hospital in Valdese. Born July 10, 1923, in Lincoln County, she was a daughter of the late Claude L. and Gertie O. Reep Davis. A member of Macedonia United Methodist Church, she was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband, Moses Andrew Hastings; a son, Nelson Kenneth Hastings; two stepsons, Hugh Lee Hastings and Paul Hastings; five brothers, J.C. Davis, O.B. Davis, Wilford Davis, Aaron Davis and Jones Davis; and a sister, Alma Motz. A member of Whitnel First Baptist Church, she was employed with Price Automotive Warehouse. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bowman Gray Austin. GRANITE FALLS - Nick Waldo Starnes, 70, of Granite Falls, died Aug. 31, 2001, at his residence. Born Feb. 19, 1931, in Caldwell County, he was a son of the late Almeda Starnes Hargett. A Baptist, he retired as a maintenance supervisor for Duke Power at the Catawba Nuclear Station. A member of the American Legion, he served in the U.S. Army. He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Jaquline Susanne Starnes. Survivors include his wife, Norma R. She was preceded in death by a brother, Stewart Scott; and two sisters, Elizabeth Martin and Colene Scott. Born Sept. 17, 1927, in Dunlap, Tenn., she was a daughter of the late Robert and Grace Hair Kerley. A member of Catawba Valley Baptist Church, she was a former employee of Lazarus. She was preceded in death by a brother, Wayne Kerley; a sister, Claudia Blaylock; and a nephew, Lee Kerley. GUY T. STEVENSON
Guy Thurston Stevenson, 87, of Hickory, died Sept. 2, 2001, at Frye Regional Medical Center. Born April 1, 1914, in Taylorsville, he was a son of the late Wilfred and Lona Eckard Stevenson. A member of St. Luke's United Methodist Church, he retired from Merchants Distributors Inc. and served as a manufacturer's representative for the Tasco and Darnell companies. A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he was a member and recipient of a Paul Harris Fellow from Hickory Rotary Club. He also was a member of the Hickory Coffee and Lake Hickory Country clubs. VALDESE - Fred O. Williams Sr., 85, of Drexel, died Sept. 3, 2001, at Autumn Care Nursing Center after a brief illness. Born Nov. 3, 1915, in Yancey County, he was a son of the late Oliver and Nora Howard Williams. He retired as an auto parts salesman. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Coy Williams and William H. Williams. Survivors include his wife, Pauline Hale Williams; a son and daughter-in-law, Fred and Carolyn Williams Jr. of Morganton; a daughter and son-in-law, Marcia D. and Gerald Cramer of Canton, Ohio; two sisters, Sylvia Edwards of Canton, Ohio, and Pauline Hensley of Aiken, S.C.; three grandchildren, Michelle Weary, Fred Williams III, and Jason E. Eddie Dean Pressley, 44, of Conover, died Sept. 2, 2001, at Valdese General Hospital. Born June 7, 1957, in Hickory, he was a son of Earl E. and Barbara Colley Pressley Jr. of Conover. A truck driver, he served in the U.S. Air Force as an airman and jet engine mechanic. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, James and Louise Martin, and maternal grandparents, Tillman and Julia Colley. STATESVILLE - Felicia “Pete” Platt Schmaltz, 49, died Aug. 25, 2001, in Marysville, Tenn. Born Sept. 4, 1951, in North Carolina, she was a daughter of Mary Platt of Statesville and the late Thomas H. Platt Sr. She was preceded in death by a sister, Winifred Platt. Born May 9, 1916, in Burke County, she was a daughter of the late Frank P. and Lilly Hawkins Brittain. A member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, she was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Vernon Denton; four brothers, Clarence Brittain, Paul Henry Brittain, Frank Brittain and Major Brittain; and four sisters, Mae Poteat, Ruby McClarnon, Florence Abee and Hazel Dale. VALDESE - Alfred Lynn Paige, 56, of Connelly Springs, died Sept. 2, 2001, at his residence. Born April 16, 1945, in Burke County, he was a son of Elizabeth Childers Paige of the home and the late Garland James Paige. He retired from the furniture manufacturing business as an upholsterer. Survivors, in addition to his mother, include five sisters, Lovena Lail of Icard, Gail Lingerfelt of Connelly Springs, Joan Williams and Wilma Greer of Granite Falls, and Kathleen Wright of Hickory; and eight nephews and nieces. Perline M. Rector, 87, of Tenth Street, SE, died Sept. 2, 2001, at Frye Regional Medical Center. Born March 3, 1914, in Catawba County, she was a daughter of the late Jeff and Pauline Propst Mingus. A member of Millers Lutheran Church, she was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband, Granville R. Rector. STONY POINT - Ralph Junior Jolly, 63, of Mocksville Highway, Cleveland, N.C., died Sept. 2, 2001, at Iredell Memorial Hospital after a period of declining health. Born July 15, 1938, in Iredell County, he was a son of the late Cleveland S. and Rachel Elizabeth Lamberth Jolly. A Baptist, he retired as a header operator with Southern Screw Co. He was preceded in death by eight siblings. Survivors include his wife, Ronda Jolly; a son, Randall Jolly of the home; a daughter, Tonya Bundy of Statesville; a brother, Phillip Jolly of Statesville; three sisters, Brenda Whitesides of Troutman, Naomi Sealy of Charlotte, and Jean Mallett of Winston-Salem; and two grandchildren, Sarah Bundy and Elizabeth Bundy of Statesville. RALEIGH - John A. Campbell, 73, died Aug. 31, 2001, at Raleigh Community Hospital. Born July 26, 1928, in Catawba County, he was a son of the late David and Bertie Moss Campbell. A 1952 graduate of Lenoir-Rhyne College, he retired from the North Carolina Environmental Management Division. He also served in the U.S. Navy. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marie; a son, Carl Stephen; a daughter, Patricia Ann; and a sister, Louise Crawford. Survivors include a daughter, Terri Osbeck of Franklinton; a sister, Ruth Drum of Newton; and two granddaughters, Crescen Osbeck and Shannon Osbeck of Franklinton. ERNEST O. BUSTLE
MORGANTON - The Rev. Ernest O. Bustle, 86, of Donald Barrier Street, died Sept. 3, 2001, at Life Care of Banner Elk after a period of declining health. Born June 4, 1915, he was a son of the late Hampton and Lula Bustle. He pastored Southern Baptist Church in North Carolina, Montana and Washington and served as a pastor in associational missionary. He was preceded in death by 10 brothers, Felix Bustle, Mac Bustle, George Bustle, John Bustle, Montie Bustle, Roy Bustle, Dallas Bustle, Flake Bustle, Press Bustle and Bill Bustle. Survivors include his wife, Mary Ellen Bustle; a daughter, Georgia Bustle of Asheville; and a sister, Della Ingram of Statesville. The funeral will be conducted by the Rev. Joe Miller at 2 p.m. today at Kirksey Funeral Home. Burial will be private in the Barrier Family Cemetery in Jonas Ridge. The family will be at the funeral home one hour prior to the service.

HATTIE B. HAYWORTH
Hattie Bowman Hayworth, 91, of Hickory, died Sept. 4, 2001, at her residence after a period of declining health. Born Feb. 25, 1910, in Taylorsville, she was a daughter of the late Jessie and Saloma Frye Bowman. A member of St. Stephen's Lutheran Church, she was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband, Hubert Ransom Hayworth; a son, Charlie A. Hayworth; and a sister, Vertie Bowman. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Pam Hayworth of Conover; four daughters and three sons-in-law, Della “Bunny” Horne, Carolyn and Tom Fulbright and Rita and Hub Robinson of Hickory and Barbara and Troy Clontz of Granite Falls; a stepson, Carl Hayworth of Hickory; two half brothers, Thurlow Bowman of Taylorsville and Jay Lee Bowman of Conover; a half sister, Thelma Bowman of Taylorsville; 15 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. STONY POINT - Sarah Mattie Adams Jolly, 96, of Country Club Road, McCormick, S.C., fomerly of N.C. 90 East, Taylorsville, died Sept. 4, 2001, at her residence. Born Sept. 28, 1904, in Alexander County, she was a daughter of the late Reuben B. and Rebecca Catherine Warren Adams. A member of Hiddenite Baptist Church, she was a homemaker and 1926 graduate of Hiddenite High School. She was preceded in death by her husband, John P. Jolly Sr.; six brothers, James Council Adams, David Adams, Reuben Clark Adams, Thomas Ransom Adams, Samuel Adams and Luther Richard Adams; and a sister, Fannie Adams Deal. Survivors include two sons, Clifford “Ted” Jolly of Kannapolis and John P. Jolly Jr. of Wilkesboro; two daughters, Catherine Bernell Gilbert of McCormick, S.C., and Mary Addie Bryan of Carrollton, Ga.; two sisters, Dorothy Earnhardt of Denver, N.C., and Katie Magdelene Jost of Roanoke, Ind.; a half sister, Ophelia Shank of Liberty; 13 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren. VALDESE - Kenneth Mitchell White, 44, of Valdese, died Sept. 3, 2001, at Valdese General Hospital. Born Feb. 6, 1957, in Burke County, he was a son of John H. and Selma Ecker White of Morganton. A member of East Valdese Baptist Church, where he served on the Youth Committee and First Step Ministries, he was employed as a paramedic with Catawba County Emergency Medical Services. Survivors, in addition to his parents, include his wife, Dianne Swink White; a son, Stephen Lee White of the home; a daughter, Ashley Elizabeth White of the home; two brothers, John “Steve” White of Abbeville, S.C., and Richard White of Morganton; and a sister, Sheila Ann Glasscock of Warner Robins, Ga. CONOVER - Cheryl Gabriel Wesson, 45, of East N.C. 10, Claremont, died Sept. 3, 2001, at Catawba Memorial Hospital. Born Nov. 10, 1955, in Iredell County, she was a daughter of Frances Sigmon Gabriel of Sherrills Ford and the late Fred Lewis Gabriel. She attended Hopewell United Methodist Church and was a homemaker. Survivors, in addition to her mother, include her husband, Keith Wesson; a son, Lonnie Shawn Loftin of Sherrills Ford; two brothers, Billy Gabriel and Richard Gabriel of Sherrills Ford; and three sisters, Dottie Carpenter of Sherrills Ford, Kathie Abernathy of Maiden and Kim Houser of Sherrills Ford. Born Feb. 9, 1920, in Dillon, S.C., she was a daughter of the late Frank and Annie Moody Braddy. A member of Mount Vernon Baptist Church, where she served on the usher board and as a missionary, she was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband, Alexander Sanders Sr.; four children, Eugene Sanders, Oscar Sanders, Wilie Fred Lipscomb and Hazel S. Armstrong; a brother, Henry Braddy; and two sisters, Eunice Easter and Margaret Sowell. Survivors include three sons, Alexander Sanders Jr. of Lincolnton, John T. Born Feb. 21, 1901, in Caswell County, she was a daughter of the late John T. and Susan Ann Pullington Carter. A member of First United Methodist Church in Marion, where she was active in the Holland Circle and Suzanna Sunday school class, she was a graduate of Milton High School and Richmond Beauty School. She was preceded in death by her husband, Leonidas M. Swanson; two brothers, William G. Carter and Jasper T. Carter; six sisters, Ella C. Thacker, Dailey H. Carter, Minnie L. Carter, Erma B. Merritt, Ruby B. Hyler and J. Aubrey Baker. Survivors include a sister-in-law, Florence L. Carter, and a number of nephews and nieces. The funeral will be conducted by the Rev. He attended Calvary Assembly of God and Henson Creek Baptist Church and retired from Powell Plumbing. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Conley Powell, Ivey Powell, Levi Powell and Jason Powell; four sisters, Lavada Ervin, Vergie Abner, Hazel Whisnant Dale and Helen Powell; and a grandson, Donnie Powell.
