Carrie Laws Butner
Carrie Laws Butner, age 75, went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, Thursday, Aug. 1, 2002 at her residence. She was the daughter of the late Jeff Laws and Bessie Hughes Laws. She was retired from Cross Cotton Mill. She was a loving mother and granny.
Surviving are three children, Donna B. Oliver of Nebo, Carolyn B. Robinson of Bostic and Dennis W. Butner and his wife, Judy, of Nebo; one brother, Jay Laws of Burnsville; and one sister, Lila Murdock of Williamston; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 3, 2002 at Going Home Free Will Baptist Church with the Rev. Jeff Duncan officiating. She will lay in state 30 minutes prior to the service. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today, Aug. 2, 2002 at Westmoreland Funeral Home. The burial will be at the Will Young Cemetery in Yancey County. 

Ralph "Bob" Bumgarner
Mr. Ralph E. "Bob" Bumgarner, age 85, of Marion died Wednesday, July 31, 2002 at his residence. 
He was the son of the late Junius Theodore Bumgarner and Mildred Connelly Bumgarner. He was a member of Providence United Methodist Church. 
He was the retired founder and owner of Bumgarner Grading Co. 
He was a U.S. Army veteran having served in World War II. Military honors will be provided by a detachment from Fort Bragg, N.C. 
Besides his parents, he is preceded in death by four brothers and two sisters.
Surviving are his wife, Betty Bumgarner of the home; two children, Mike Bumgarner and his wife, Judy, of Nebo, and Sandy Bumgarner Hilton and her husband, Joe, of Charlotte; one brother, Bill Bumgarner of Nebo; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Friday, Aug. 2, 2002 at 10 a.m. at Westmoreland Chapel with the Rev. George Roberson officiating. 
The family will receive friends Thursday, Aug. 1, 2002 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Westmoreland Funeral Home. The interment will be at McDowell Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Providence United Methodist Church, 80 Providence Church Road, Marion, N.C. 28752, Hospice of McDowell County, 218 Logan St., Marion, N.C. 28752 or True Faith Holiness Church, Highway 221 North, Marion, N.C. 28752. 

Bryan Raybuck
Bryan DeVere Raybuck, 53, Altoona, Pa. native and resident of Marion, N.C. died July 25, 2002 while on a business trip in Costa Rica. Bryan was born October 18, 1948 in DuBois, Pa. He graduated from Altoona High School in 1966 and received his B.S. in microbiology from Penn State University in 1970. He married Linda Mae Lang on September 9, 1972.
He is survived by his wife, Linda Mae (Lang) and son, Jason Bryan Raybuck of Marion, N.C.; his parents, Mildred Avonelle (Rowland) and Wilson DeVere Raybuck of Harlingen, Texas; sisters, Cindy L. Wesso of Harker Heights, Texas and Heidi L. McCorkle of Altoona, Pa.; and brother, Bradley W. Raybuck of Hendersonville, N.C. He was preceded in death by his sister, Debra Suzette McGee.
A lifelong employee of Baxter Healthcare Corp., Bryan was a Certified Quality Engineer and a Quality Validation Manager. He developed and implemented software and quality assurance programs used in Baxter Healthcare locations in the United States and throughout the world. He served on several national committees for Electronic Record Validation and Quality Management.
Services will be held at the Daniel R. Myers Funeral Home in Altoona, Pa. at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 2 with Rev. A. Gordan officiating. Internment will follow at the Presbyterian Cemetery in Hollidaysburg. A memorial service is also being planned in Marion, N.C.

Thelma Holden
Thelma Louise Anderson Holden of Riverdale, Ga., former long-time resident of Marion, N.C., died Wednesday, July 24, 2002. Mrs. Holden was preceded in death by her son, Bill Holden. Survivors include her husband of 65 years, Ralph Holden of Riverdale, Ga.; two sons, Donnie and Loretta Holden of Jonesboro, Ga. and Bob Holden of Fayetteville, Ga.; 12 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and one niece.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, July 26, 2002 from Tara Garden Chapel in Jonesboro, Ga. with the Rev. Curtis Turner officiating. Interment will follow in Sherwood Memorial Park. Charles Randy Taylor, age 57, of Marion, died Wednesday, July 24, 2002 at his residence.

Pauline Wiseman
Pauline Wiseman, 70, of Highway 221 North, Marion, died Wednesday at a local hospital.
She was the daughter of the late Ed and Bonnie McKinney Riddle and the wife of the late William Earl Wiseman, who died in 2001. She was a homemaker and a member of the Blue Ridge Baptist Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Bobbi Sparks of Union Mills and Rosie Griffith of Marion; one son, Eddie Wiseman of Marion; four sisters, Edith Crowder of Nebo, Hester Ledford and Grace McKinney, both of Hickory, and Cartha Lowery of Spruce Pine; two brothers, Clyde and David Riddle, both of Spruce Pine; seven grandchildren, Windy, April, Shawn, Robin, Dustin, Cody and Stephanie; and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, July 26, at the Grindstaff Memorial Chapel of Webb Funeral Home in Spruce Pine with the Rev. Cephas Renfro officiating. Burial will be in the McKinney Gap Cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. at Webb Funeral Home. Condolences may be e-mailed to the family at Webb@funeral-plans.com.
