Sheila Rose Holt

Died: 02/14/2016 and resided in Roxboro, NC

Sheila Rose Holt, 72, of 414 Edgar Street died Sunday, February 14, 2016. She was born in Person County to the late Robert Holt and Ruth Gravitte Bryant, who survives. She was a member of the Women's Auxiliary at Person Memorial Hospital and had a heart of gold. Ms. Holt was a member of Grace United Methodist Church.

Surviving in addition to her mother, are one brother, Richard Holt, of Danville, VA; one sister, Marion Oakley and husband Roger, of Roxboro; one sister-in-law, Jean Holt, of Creedmoor; nieces and nephews, Lynne Kirby and husband Joey, of Roxboro, Mike Holt (Katrina), of Oxford, Ricky Holt and wife Lena, of Clayton, and Helen Holt, of Kernersville; and three great-nephews, Trey Kirby, of Roxboro, Logan Holt, of Oxford, and Jonathan Holt, of Norfolk, VA.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Wednesday, February 17, 2016 at Grace United Methodist Church by Pastor Kent Miller. Burial will follow in Leasburg Community Cemetery. Visitation will be held an hour prior to the service.

Pallbearers will be Trey Kirby, Justin Shotwell, Joey Kirby, Lambert Evans, Ricky Holt, and Lanny Vaughn.

Memorials may be made to Grace-CaVel United Methodist Church, 313 Church St. Roxboro NC 27573.

Effie Holbrook Dowell
Born: 05/21/1928 Wilkes County, NC
Died: 02/12/2016 and resided in Roxboro, NC

Effie Holbrook Dowell, 87, died Friday, February 12, 2016. She was born in Wilkes County to the late Herman Roscoe Holbrook and Ethel Billings Holbrook. Mrs. Dowell was also preceded in death by her husband, R.C. Dowell. She was a member of Round Hill Baptist Church in Traphill, NC.

Surviving are three children, Larry Andrew Dowell (Barbara) of Hurdle Mills, Barbara Ann Dowell Tuck (Roger) of Roxboro, and Sharon Adele Dowell Newton (Sam) of Semora; one sister, Eddie Holbrook Wiles, of Hayes; five grandchildren, Jason Tuck (Traci), Michael Tuck(Elizabeth), Chad Dowell (Corie), Karen D. Howerton (Rodney), and Lauren D. Wilson (Christopher); seven great-grandchildren, Carson and Kayla Tuck, Drew and Matthew Howerton, Ava, Emma, and Ross Wilson.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM, Tuesday, February 16, 2016 at Brooks & White Chapel with the Rev. Barry Chambers and the Rev. Donald Daniel officiating. Burial will be at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church Cemetery, Hurdle Mills, NC 27541.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service, 1 PM to 2 PM Tuesday, February 16, 2016 at Brooks & White Chapel and other times at the home of her daughter, Barbara & Roger Tuck, 35 Victoria Lane, Roxboro, NC 27574.

Memorials may be made to Roxboro Healthcare Activities Fund c/o Roxboro Healthcare & Rehabilitation Center, 901 Ridge Road, Roxboro, NC 27573 or Youth for Christ, 80 Danwin Lane, Roxboro, NC 27573.

Henry Edward "Fat" Holt
Born: 05/11/1934 Person County, NC
Died: 02/09/2016 and resided in Person County, NC

Henry Edward "Fat" Holt, 81, died Tuesday, February 9, 2016 at Person Memorial Hospital. He was born in Person County to the late Johnnie Alton Holt and Viola Bowes Holt. Mr. Holt was husband of the late Pauline Nelson Holt. He was a retired carpenter. Mr. Holt was a member of the Triple Springs Baptist Church.

Surviving are three children, Lynn Holt Carter, Andrew Ervin Holt, and Betty Lou Holt all of Roxboro; and one grandchild, Zach Carter.

The funeral service will be 2 PM Friday, February 12, 2016 at Brooks & White Chapel with the Rev. John Pritchard officiating. Burial will be in the Triple Springs Cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM Thursday, February 11, 2016 at Brooks & White Funeral Home and other times at his home.

Pallbearers will be Larry Warren, Ken Humphries, Billy Carter, Merritt Bowes, Bradley Meadows, and Jack Long. Honorary pallbearers will be Zach Carter, grandson, Cecil Carver, nephew, Moses Clay, and Wade Whitlow.

Janie Dickerson Long
Born: 05/14/1929 Person County, NC
Died: 02/04/2016 and resided in Roxboro, NC

Janie Dickerson Long, 86, of Roxboro passed away peacefully Thursday, February 4, 2016 surrounded by her children. Born May 14, 1929 in Person County, she loved to tell stories of her happy childhood growing up in Cavel Village. Janie was the youngest daughter of the late Matt and Evelyn Cozart Dickerson and sister to Marjorie Dickerson Moore (husband, Lawrence "Red" Moore) and sister to Gladys Dickerson Kirby (husband, Ben Kirby) all deceased.

Janie married the love of her life, Robert Hassell "Bobby" Long, Jr. in 1952 and they were married 58 years before his passing in 2011. She was a loving and devoted daughter, sister, wife, and mother. Janie worked as a teacher assistant at South Elementary School in Person County for 25 years.

Surviving are two daughters; Bridget Long Williams (husband, Johnny), of Fuquay-Varina, and Cindy Long Johnson (husband Ron), of Roxboro; one son, Robert H. "Bob" Long, III (wife Marsha), of Angier; two grandchildren: Jeff Johnson (wife, Madison), of Roxboro, and Hayley Long, of Angier; and many beloved nieces and nephews.

The children wish to express their sincere love and appreciation to Janie's caregivers: Kathy Clayton, Penny McKeithan, and Bobbie Frederick for the excellent care given to their mother.

Visitation will be held from 12:30-2:30 PM Saturday, February 6, 2016 at Long Memorial United Methodist Church.

Funeral service will be 3:00 PM Saturday, February 6, 2016 at Long Memorial United Methodist Church by the Rev. Jeff Nash. Burial will follow in Burchwood Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Brent Groce, Jeff Johnson, Chuck Long, Glen Long, Evan Moore, Steve Moore, C.R. Pointer, and Ronnie Regan.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Long Memorial United Methodist Church of Roxboro, P.O. Box 310, Roxboro, NC 27573 or Home Health and Hospice of Person, 355 A South Madison Blvd., Roxboro, NC 27573.

James "Jim" M. Allen
Born: 03/08/1922 Person County, NC
Died: 02/03/2016 and resided in Person County, NC

James "Jim" M. Allen, age 93, of 628 Hillhaven Terrace, Roxboro, died Wednesday, February 3, 2016. Mr. Allen was born in Person County to the late George and Sallie Hicks Allen. He is preceded in death by his wife of fifty-six years, Nell Owen Allen; two brothers: Henry Clay Allen and George Allen; one sister: Daisy Evans.

Mr. Allen was a World War II Army Veteran who received two Bronze Stars and the Purple Heart Award. He worked in the Roxboro Post Office for thirty-three years, and served on Roxboro City Council for thirty-four years. He served on numerous boards: the Person County Council of Aging, Kerr-Tar Regional Council of Governments, Person County Senior Center, Person Memorial Hospital Board, and was also a Boy Scout leader. Mr. Allen was a recipient of the Order of the Long Leaf Pine Award. He was an active member of Grace United Methodist who sang in the choir and served for fifty years as treasurer.

Surviving are his four children: Rhonda Cardwell, of Roxboro, Jimmy K. Allen (Angela), of Hurdle Mills, Kelly Allen (Michelle), of Roxboro, and Terry Allen, of Roxboro; one brother, Jack Allen, of Timberlake; three sisters: Mildred Evans, of Mallberry, FL., Colleen Thomas, of Woodstock, VA, and Virginia Morris, of Timberlake; eight grandchildren: Jennifer Whitfield, Jamie Cardwell, Martha Allen, Rachel Allen, Bridget Allen, Matt Allen, Ron Allen, and Brooke Allen; six great-grandchildren: Caitlin Whitfield, Cassidy Whitfield, Cam Whitfield, Callen Cardwell, Trenton James Allen, and Jordyn Allen.

Visitation will be held from 6:00-7:30 PM Friday, February 5, 2016 at Brooks & White Funeral Home and other times at the home.

Funeral Service will be 11:00 AM Saturday, February 6, 2016 at Grace United Methodist Church by the Rev. Kent Miller and Rev. Ross Thompson. Burial will follow in Burchwood Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Ron Allen, Matt Allen, Jamie Cardwell, Mike Saunders, Cam Whitfield, Kenneth Hicks, Trenton Allen and Roger Allen.

Memorials may be made to Grace United Methodist Church, 313 Church Street, Roxboro, NC 27573.

George Kent Taylor
Born: 10/01/1957 Person County, NC
Died: 03/11/2016 and resided in Person County, NC

George Kent Taylor, 58, of 296 Lewis Winstead Loop, Roxboro, died Friday, March 11, 2016. Born in Person County, Mr. Taylor was the son of the late George W. Taylor and Corinna Day Taylor, who survives. He served in the National Guard. Mr. Taylor worked for Progress Energy and owned/operated Country Gardens. He was of the Baptist faith.

In addition to his mother, Mr. Taylor is survived by his wife, Penny Taylor, of the home; one son, Todd Taylor and wife, Jennifer of Hurdle Mills; one brother, David Taylor and wife Barbara of Roxboro; two grandchildren: Cash and Camdyn Taylor of Hurdle Mills; one nephew, Jeffrey Taylor.

Visitation will be held from 7:00-8:30 PM Saturday, March 12, 2016 at Brooks & White Chapel and other times at the home.

Funeral service will be 2:00 PM Sunday, March 13, 2016 at the Brooks & White Chapel by the Rev. Gerald Hodges. Burial will follow in the Person Memorial Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Stanley Reaves, Glenn Williams, Johnny Mason, Mark Martin, Harold "Bo" Smith, and Erwin "Snap" Gillispie.
