SEAGROVE - Lydia Loretta Brown Spencer, 77, of 7467 Meadowbranch Road, died Wednesday, Dec. 25, 2002, at Cross Road Rest & Retirement Center, Asheboro.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Community Independent Baptist Church, where she was a member, with the Rev. David Davis, the Rev. Melvin Morton and the Rev. Jimmy Shirlen officiating. Burial will be in Union Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.

She was a native of Randolph County, the widow of Richard Spencer, a retired employee of Mid-State Plastics and a homemaker.

Surviving are daughters, Edith S. Hussey, Nancy Spencer, both of Seagrove; sons, Paul Spencer of Seagrove, Roland Spencer of Ramseur, Johnny Spencer of Bennett; sisters, Ruby Brown Chriscoe of Seagrove, Annie Brown Chriscoe of Erect; brothers, June Brown of Jugtown, Farrell Brown of Jackson Springs; eight grandchildren; one great-grandchild.

The family will be at Ridge Funeral Home, Asheboro, 7-9 p.m. Friday, other times at the home of Paul Spencer, 7386 Meadowbranch Road, Seagrove.

Raymond S. Brown
RAMSEUR - Raymond Spencer Brown, 74, of 5577 U.S. 64 East, Lot#16, died Thursday, Dec. 26, 2002, at Chatham Hospital, Siler City.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Middle Cross Baptist Church, where he was a member, with the Rev. Brian Smith officiating. Burial will be in Gilmore Memorial Park.

He was a native of Augusta County, Va., a retired employee of Coller Keyworth Inc., and a Korean War U.S. Air Force veteran.

Surviving are sons, James "Pat" Brown of Siler City, Donald Brown of Sophia, Christopher Brown of Randleman; daughters, Audrey Griffin of Ramseur, Marion Presnell of the home; mother, Laura Brown Ramsey of Liberty; 15 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Loflin Funeral Home, Ramseur, 7-9 p.m. Friday, other times at the home.

Frances R. Whitt
STALEY - Frances Rush Whitt, 80, of 7005 Sandy Creek Church Road, died Wednesday, Dec. 25, 2002, at her home.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

She was a native of Randolph County and a retired employee of Lorillard Tobacco Co. She attended Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church and Richland Gospel Church.

Surviving are daughter, Sandra W. Hemphill of Staley; son, Charles Whitt Sr. of Staley; sister, Ruth Barrett of Asheboro; brother, J.C. Rush Jr. of Waxhaw; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Loflin Funeral Home, Liberty, 6-8 p.m. Saturday, other times at the home.

Margaret S. Vestal
SILER CITY - Margaret Forrest Shelton Vestal, 92, died Friday, Dec. 20, 2002, at SunBridge Care, Siler City.

Graveside service will be 3:30 p.m. Sunday at Moon's Chapel Baptist Church Cemetery.

She was a native of Mt. Airy, the widow of William Edward Vestal, a retired City Clerk of Siler City and a member of First United Methodist Church. She attended the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

Surviving are daughter, Dr. Charlotte Vestal Brown of Raleigh; one grandson.

The family will be at Smith and Buckner Funeral Home, Siler City, 2-3 p.m. Sunday prior to the service.

BENNETT - Virtle Brown Hicks, 87, of 186 Lewis Brown Road, died Wednesday, Dec. 25, 2002, at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital, Pinehurst.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Pleasant Grove Christian Church, where she was a member, with the Rev. Chris Wood and the Rev. Thurman Williams officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

She was a native of Chatham County and the widow of Talmadge Hicks.

Surviving are daughter, Karen Hicks of the home; son, Terry R. Hicks of Morehead City.

The family will be at Joyce-Brady Funeral Home, Bennett, 6-8 p.m. Friday.

Adele G. Kearns
MT. GILEAD - Adele G. Kearns, 86, formerly of Greensboro, died Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2002.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Snow Hill A.M.E. Zion Church, with the Rev. Dewey Rudisell officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

She was a native of Richmond County, a private duty nurse and a member of Trinity A.M.E. Zion Church, Greensboro.

Surviving are son, Steven Kearns of Greensboro; stepdaughter, Ethel Legrand of Greensboro.

The family will be at the home of the Rev. Dewey Rudisell, 106 Rudisell Road, Mt. Gilead.

Rev. Charles L. Shreve
ROBBINS - The Rev. Charles Lynn Shreve, 78, of 201 W. Salisbury St., died Thursday, Dec. 26, 2002, at his home.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Pleasant View Friends Church, with Dr. John Williams Jr. officiating. Burial will be in Pine Rest Cemetery.

He was a native of Beloit, Ohio, and a retired minister.

Surviving are wife, Mary Esther Shreve of the home; son, Stanley Lewis Shreve of Snow Camp; brothers, Harold Shreve of Beloit, Ohio, Lowell Shreve of Canton, Ohio; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.

ASHEBORO - Lois Gertrude Price Davis, 83, of 1539 Humble St., Asheboro, died Wednesday, Dec. 25, 2002, at Randolph Hospital.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Monday at St. Luke U.M. Church.

Surviving are husband, Russell Davis of the home; sister, Iwela Ratcliff of Cleveland, Ohio; one grandson.

The family will be at the church 1-2 p.m. Monday prior to the service, other times at the home.

Henry D. Matthews
ASHEBORO - Henry D. Matthews, 77, of 4278 Osborne Mill Road, died Thursday, Dec. 26, 2002, at his home.

Funeral service will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Piney Ridge United Methodist Church, where he was a member, with the Rev. Pamula Blackstock officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

He was a native of Chatham County, a retired employee of Klopman Mill and a member of the United Methodist Men's Club at his church.

Surviving are wife, Mildred Geraldine Matthews of the home; daughter, Sarah Jones of Marreo, La.; sons, Walter Matthews of Siler City, Lester Matthews of Randleman, Michael Matthews of Greensboro; brothers, James Matthews of Franklinville, Rufus Matthews of Ramseur; 16 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren.

The family will be at the church 2-3 p.m. Sunday, prior to the service.

SOPHIA - Edna Louisa Reynolds Rich, 79, of 1309 Rich Farm Road, died Thursday, Dec. 26, 2002, at Randolph Hospital.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Trinity Holiness Church, with the Rev. Arthur Swaney officiating. Burial will be in South Plainfield Friends Meeting cemetery.

She was a homemaker and the widow of Norman A. Rich.

Surviving are sons, Charles Wayne Rich, Don Ray Rich, Eugene Rich, Jerry Lee Rich, all of Sophia; daughter, Linda R. Coble of Sophia; sister, Dale Easter of Mt. Airy; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Pugh Funeral Home, Randleman, 6-8 p.m. Saturday.

MT. GILEAD - Adele Greene Kearns, 86, formerly of Greensboro, died Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2002.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Snow Hill A.M.E. Zion Church, Mt. Gilead, Richmond County. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

She was a native of Richmond County and a member of Trinity A.M.E. Zion Church, Greensboro.

Surviving are son, Steven B. Kearns of Greensboro; stepdaughter, Ethel L. Legrand of Greensboro; sister, Luevenia Ledbetter of Mt. Gilead.

Mattie B. Leake
MT. GILEAD - Mattie Louise Butler Leake, 62, of Parkertown, died Wednesday, Dec. 25, 2002.

Funeral service will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Mt. Zion A.M.E. Zion Church, where she was a member. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

She was a native of Stanly County and a retired employee of McRae Shoe Factory.

Surviving are husband, Howard Leake of the home; daughters, Sue Leach and Patricia James, both of Winston-Salem, Phyllis Tyson of Polkton, Gwendolyn Bogans of Albemarle, Pamela Dumas of Mt. Gilead; sons, Howard Leslie Leake Jr., Thaddeus Leake, both of Mt. Gilead; sisters, Minnie Medley of New London, Juanita Gaddy and Alice Bankston, both of Washington, DC.; brothers, Samuel Butler of New London, Wilbert Butler of Albemarle, Frank Butler Sr. of Martinsville, Va., Henry James Butler of Washington, D.C.; 10 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.

The family will be at the church 2-3 p.m. Sunday, prior to the service.

MT. GILEAD - J C Thompson, 82, of 1601 Thickety Creek Road, died Friday, Dec. 27, 2002, at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital, Pinehurst.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Holly Mount Baptist Church, where he was a member, with the Rev. Henry Jenkins officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

He was a native of Montgomery County, a deacon and choir director at his church and served as a Montgomery County commissioner for 16 years. He was a past president of Pee Dee Electric Co-op and a retired farmer.

Surviving are wife, Viola Wilson Thompson of the home; sons, Colburn Thompson and Bradley Reid Thompson, both of Mt. Gilead, Felix Thompson of Troy; sister, Hazelene Harris of Candor; three grandchildren.

The family will be at Pugh-Troy Funeral Home, Troy, 7-9 p.m. Saturday, other times at the home.

He was a native of Chatham County and a retired employee of Collins & Aikman, Siler City.

Surviving are wife, Ruby Goins Phillips of Bear Creek; son, Steve Phillips of Greensboro; daughters, Catherine Stone of Sanford, Carol Moore of Linden, Lee Brooks of Springfield, Mo.; brother, Vernon Phillips of Bear Creek; sisters, Mamie Reese of Dallas, Texas, Virginia Burton of Greensboro; 13 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren.

Johnny R. Barfield Sr.
ASHEBORO - Johnny Ray Barfield Sr., 55, of 306 Pershing St., Asheboro, died Friday, Dec. 27, 2002, at Randolph Hospital.

Funeral service will be 3 p.m. Monday at God's Outreach Ministry, with the Rev. John Beane officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

He was a native of Randolph County, attended Grays Chapel School and owned Big John's Tackle Shop. He was a member of Willow Lane Baptist Church and formerly employed with Asheboro Elastic.

Surviving are wife, Bonnie Hoover Barfield of Asheboro; sons, Johnny Ray Barfield Jr., Matthew Norman Barfield, both of Asheboro; daughters, Bonnie Mae Watson of Asheboro, Susan Denise Greenway of Spartanburg, S.C.; brother, Donnie K. Barfield of Asheboro; stepdaughter, Teresa Tate of Asheboro; stepson, Michael Brady of Asheboro; nine grandchildren.

Alan E. DeRatt Sr.
ASHEBORO - Alan Edwin DeRatt Sr., 81, of 1411 Timberlane Road, Asheboro, died Friday, Dec. 27, 2002, at Fuquay-Varina.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Monday at First Baptist Church, where he was a member, with the Rev. Mark Hall and Dr. John S. Rogers officiating. Burial will be in Randolph Memorial Park with military honors.

He was a native of Mission Ridge, Ga., retired from the N.C. State Board of Health and as an environmentalist/chemist with the N.C. State Rural Water Association. He was a summa cum laude graduate and teacher with Atlantic Christian College, taught radiological math and science at North Carolina State University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He was a past deacon, teacher and special education outreach director at his church, and a member of the American Legion, Woodmen of the World and Rural Water Association of N.C. He was a member of and instrumental in founding the Waste Water Treatment Plant Operators School of NC and a World War II U.S. Coast Guard veteran.

Surviving are wife, Elizabeth Stokes DeRatt of the home; daughters, Margaret Elizabeth Long of Cary, Linda D. Pucino of Asheboro; sons, Stanley Eugene DeRatt of Charlotte, Alan Edwin DeRatt Jr. of Asheboro; brother, James Harold DeRatt of Stantonsburg; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Pugh Funeral Home, Asheboro, 6-8 p.m. Sunday, other times at the home.

ASHEBORO - Lois Yarborough Gregson, 93, of Cookeville, Tenn., formerly of Kivett Street, Asheboro, died Saturday, Dec. 28, 2002, at NHC Healthcare, Cookeville, Tenn.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Monday at Pugh Funeral Home, Asheboro, with Dr. John S. Rogers and the Rev. Mark Hall officiating. Burial will be in Oaklawn Cemetery.

She was a native of Lee County, the widow of James E. Gregson, a homemaker and a member of First Baptist Church.

Surviving are sons, Robert Gregson of Cookeville, Tenn., James Edwin Gregson of Wilmington; sister, Velma Burns of Pittsboro; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.

The family will be at the funeral home one hour prior to the service on Monday.

Bertha R. Tate
ASHEBORO - Bertha Elizabeth Auman Robertson Tate, 81, of 4984 220 Business South, Asheboro, died Saturday, Dec. 28, 2002, at her home.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Monday at Pugh Funeral Home, Asheboro, with the Rev. Charles Spivey officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Hill Primitive Baptist Church cemetery.

She was the widow of W. Stewart Robertson and Manly M. Tate, a retired businesswoman and the owner of Auman-Robertson Construction Co. Inc., and Tate's Crafts Inc. She was a former continuing education instructor at Randolph Community College and a member of Centre Cross Baptist Church.

Surviving are daughters, Susan Dunker of Asheboro, Dr. Barbara Holt of Bristol, Tenn.; sister, Beulah Luck of Asheboro; brothers, Grady Auman, Coy Auman, both of Asheboro; three grandsons; three great-grandchildren.

The family will be at the funeral home one hour prior to the service, other times at the home.
