GREENSBORO - Evelyn Austin Watson, of 427 Banks St., died Saturday, Dec. 14, 2002, at Beverly Healthcare of Greensboro.

Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Friday at Shiloh Baptist Church. Burial will be in the Oakland-McCrary Cemetery, Ramseur.

Surviving are sons, Lorenzo Watson of Norfolk, Va., Alfred Watson of Greensboro; daughters, Elizabeth McDougal, Margaret Hardy, Betty Jean Herring, Shirley Ann Henderson, Evelyn Hicks, all of Greensboro; brother, Shelly Austin of Greensboro; 14 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren.

The family will be at the church noon-1 p.m. Friday.

Kimes Funeral Service, Liberty, is in charge of the arrangements.

ALBEMARLE - David Lee Young, 57, died Sunday, Dec. 15, 2002, in Stanly County Hospital, Albemarle.

Funeral service will be 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Troy Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church, Troy, where he was a member. Burial will be in Freeman Hill Cemetery.

He was a native of Montgomery County and an employee of Wal-Mart of Albemarle.

Surviving are sons, Minister Marvin Pemberton of Florida, Gary Young of Albemarle; brothers, Ward E Young Jr. of Charlotte, John Henry Young of High Point, Paul Young of Thomasville, Troy Young of Asheboro; sisters, Pothenia Simmons, Geneva Leake, Clara Ruth Butler, all of Troy, Cathleen Ratliff of High Point, Willie Mae Robinson of Ellerbe, Ada Capel of Biscoe; several grandchildren.

The family will be at the church 1-1:30 p.m. Thursday, prior to the service.

Harris Funeral Home, Mt. Gilead, is in charge of arrangements.

William E. McNaney
LONGMONT, Colo. - William Edward McNaney, 86, of 851 Meadowdale Square, died Sunday, Dec. 15, 2002, at Applewood Living Center, Longmont.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at New Hope United Methodist Church, Asheboro, with Lowell McNaney officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

He was a native of Atlantic City, N.J., and the widower of Treva Voncannon McNaney. He graduated from McKinley Technical High School and attended George Washington University, both in Washington, D.C. He retired from the National Bureau of Standards, now National Institute of Standards and Technology, after 35 years as an engineering technician and retired from Beach Aircraft Corp. as a tool-and-die maker in its Space Shuttle program. He was a member of Rocky Mountain Christian Church, Longmont, Colo.

Surviving are wife, Margaret McNaney of the home; sons, Michael E. McNaney of Colorado Springs, Colo., Lowell McNaney of Concord; three stepchildren; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Ridge Funeral Home, Asheboro, 7-9 p.m. Friday.

William M. Garner
ASHEBORO - William Michael Garner, 56, of 361 Hamlin St., Asheboro, died Wednesday, Dec. 18, 2002, at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital in Greensboro.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Pugh Funeral Home, Asheboro, with the Rev. Andy Garner and the Rev. David Beck officiating. Burial will follow in Randolph Memorial Park.

He was formerly employed with Chairs Manufacturing Co.

Surviving are wife, Nancy Hoover Garner of Asheboro; sons, Steve Garner of Asheboro and Tracy Garner of Ramseur; sisters, Dorothy Beck of Robbins and Linda McLean of Asheboro; brothers, Leon Garner and Garland Garner, both of Troy; four grandchildren.

The family will be at the funeral home 7-9 p.m. Saturday, other times at the home of Steve Garner, 518 Stowe Ave., Asheboro.

Howard F. Rich
SOPHIA - Howard Franklin Rich, 88, of Branson Davis Road, died Wednesday, Dec. 18, 2002, at Randolph Hospital.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Cumby Family Funeral Service, Archdale, with the Rev. Jack Clark officiating. Burial will follow in the Ebenezer United Methodist Church Cemetery.

He was a native of Randolph County and the widower of the late Anna Leigh Fields. He attended Sophia United Church of Christ and was a member of the Senior Adult Sunday School Class. He retired from Thomas Built Buses after 36 years of service and organized and coached the first little league baseball team in the New Market Community during the late 1950s.

Surviving are sons, Donald Keith Rich of Sophia and Arnold Dean Rich of Albany, Ga.; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.

The family will be at the funeral home 7-9 p.m. Friday, other times at the home of Donald Keith Rich, 2334 Lake Lucas Road, Sophia.

Ruth B. Cheek
STALEY - Ruth Elizabeth Barker Cheek, 84, of 438 Bish Road, died Thursday, Dec. 19, 2002, at Chatham Hospital Inc., Siler City.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Kildee Wesleyan Church, Ramseur, where she was a member, with the Rev. Gary Waisner and the Rev. Roger Riffe officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

A native of Chatham County, she retired from Siler City Mills.

Surviving are husband, Cletus Cheek of Staley; daughters, Dixie C. Kivett of Liberty and Phyllis C. Beal of Staley; sisters, Margaret Leviner and Juanita Carmac, both of Ramseur, and Frances Salsman of Clayton, Ill.; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.

The family will be at the Smith and Buckner Funeral Home, Siler City, 7-9 p.m. Friday, other times at the home of daughter, Phyllis Beal, 456 Bish Road, Staley.

Virginia Cheek
LIBERTY - Virginia Cheek of Kirkman Street., died Tuesday, Dec. 17, 2002, at Carolina Commons Nursing Home.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at St. Stephen A.M.E. Church, Liberty. Burial will be in the St. Stephen's Memorial Garden.

Surviving are husband, Edward Cheek of the home; daughter, Sandra Cheek Bartell; sons, Dwight Cheek, Reginald Cheek, both of Liberty, Lee Cheek of Greensboro; sisters, Pattie Martin of Liberty, Fannie Wilson of New York, Elnora Harris of California, Rosetta Reeves of Asheboro; brothers, Leon Hooker and Harry Hook, both of Greensboro; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.

The family will be at the church 1-2 p.m. Saturday, prior to the service.

Linda T. Woods
LIBERTY - Linda T. Woods, 58, of 3555 Williams Dairy Road, died Wednesday, Dec. 18, 2002, at Wesley Long Hospital, Greensboro.

Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Fairview Cemetery.

She was a member of River of Life Pentecostal Holiness Church.

Surviving are husband, Roby F. Woods of the home; daughters, Beth Thompson of Asheboro and Sherry Humphrey of Mt. Pleasant; sons, Roby Karl Woods of Greensboro, Christopher Woods of Whitsett and Christopher L. Suttles of Asheville; brothers, Johnny Turner of Roanoke, Va., and Michael Turner of Stokesdale; 12 grandchildren.

The family will be at Loflin Funeral Home, Liberty, 6:30-8:30 p.m. Friday, other times at the home.

Everette E. Lewis Sr.
ROBBINS - Everette Eugene Lewis Sr., 78, of 13007 N.C. 24/27, died Thursday, Dec. 19, 2002, at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital, Pinehurst.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Tabernacle United Methodist Church, where he was a member, with the Rev. Keith Miller and the Rev. Robert Bundy officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

He was a native of Moore County, a U.S. Marine veteran of World War II and a self-employed merchant.

Surviving are wife, Dixie Lassiter Lewis of the home; sons, Everette Eugene Lewis Jr. of Robbins and Gary W. Lewis of Seagrove; daughter, Gwen L. Pickle of Robbins; sisters, Barbara Bryant of Robbins and Doris Dutcher of Fayetteville; brothers, Willard Lewis of Asheboro and Bob Lewis of Charlotte; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Kennedy Funeral Home, Robbins, 6:30-8:30 p.m. Friday, other times at the home.

Calvin Lynch
ASHEBORO - Calvin Harrison Lynch, 47, of 3053 Fairview Farm Road, Asheboro, died Wednesday, Dec. 18, 2002, at his home.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Pugh Funeral Home, Asheboro, with the Rev. Roy Grigsby and the Rev. Garry L. Reeder officiating. Burial will follow in Randolph Memorial Park.

He was a native of Randolph County and a member of Eastside Baptist Church. He was formerly employed with Superior Body Shop and Brady Dodge.

Surviving are wife, Kathy Strickland Lynch; son, Calvin Christopher Lynch of the home; stepson, Paul McDaniel of Cape Coral, Fla.; mother, Ruth W. Lynch of Asheboro; sisters, Marie Cox of Asheboro, Janie Swaim of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Elizabeth Delk of Silver Valley, N.C.; brothers, Kenneth Lynch and Buck Lynch, both of Asheboro.

The family will be at the funeral home 7-9 p.m. Friday, other times at the home.

Carnel M. Strickland
SILER CITY - Carnel Maloy Strickland, 78, died Thursday, Dec. 19, 2002, at Kindred Hospital, Greensboro.

Funeral service will be 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Holy Trinity United Holy Church, where he was a member, with the Rev. Samuel B. Obie officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

He was a native of Chatham County and a retired employee of Collins & Aikman.

Surviving are wife, Cleo Strickland; son, Shelton Williams of Siler City; stepson, Charles Matthews of Upper Marlboro, Md.; brother, Rev. David Strickland of Siler City; sisters, Marguerite Rogers of Siler City, Florence Rodgers of Greensboro; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren.

The family will be at the church 2-2:30 p.m. Sunday.

Ruby H. Garner
ROBBINS - Ruby Frances Holder Garner, 76, of 251 Frye St., died Thursday, Dec. 19, 2002, at Carolina Commons in Greensboro.

Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Sunday in Flint Hill Baptist Church Cemetery, with the Rev. Ernest Ferrell officiating.

She was a native of Montgomery County and a homemaker.

Surviving are daughter, Kay G. Binder of Greensboro, sons, Darrell Garner of Raeford, James Herman Garner Jr. of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; sisters, Audrey Holder Foster of Concord, Lois Holder Craven of Ellerbe; four grandchildren.

The family will be at Kennedy Funeral Home, Robbins, 6-8 p.m. Saturday.

Marjorie T. Gaines
BEAR CREEK - Marjorie Tally Gaines, 79, of 1652 Vander Oldham Road, died Friday, Dec. 20, 2002, at UNC Hospitals, Chapel Hill.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Hickory Grove Baptist Church, with the Rev. Darrell Garner officiating. Burial will be in Gaines Grove Cemetery.

She was a native of Chatham County, the widow of William Clarence "Mousey" Gaines and a member of Antioch Baptist Church.

Surviving are daughters, Lydia Tart of Randleman, Kay Keck of Apex, Kathy Woody of Bear Creek; sons, Paul Gaines of Bear Creek, Mike Gaines and Mark Gaines, both of Siler City, Hal Gaines of Goldston, Brent Ashley of Bear Creek; sisters, Mabel Phillips of Bear Creek, Nellie Gaines of Goldston; five grandchildren.

Clyde D. Coltrane
ASHEBORO - Clyde David Coltrane, 74, of 163 Drum St., Asheboro, died Saturday, Dec. 21, 2002, at Randolph Hospital.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Monday at Pugh Funeral Home, Asheboro, with the Rev. Garland McDowell and the Rev. Kenneth Lee Green officiating. Burial will follow in Flag Springs United Methodist Church Cemetery.

He was a native of Randolph County and a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean Conflict. He served in the Merchant Marines and was formerly employed with Walker Shoe Company and with the N.C. State Department of Transportation. He was retired from Klaussner Furniture.

Surviving are daughters, Elaine Davis of High Point, Cynthia Short of Atlanta, Ga., and Lisa Johnson of Asheboro; sons, Rodney Kearns of Asheboro, Dewayne Davis and Terry Davis, both of Fayetteville; sister, Pauline Voncannon of Asheboro; nine grandchildren.

The family will be at the funeral home 12:30-1:45 p.m. Monday, prior to the service.

Walter Guinn
ASHEBORO - Walter Guinn, 82 of 226 S. Spring St., Asheboro, died Friday, Dec. 20, 2002, at his home.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Monday at Church of God of Prophecy, Asheboro, with the Rev. Gaylyn S. Wilson officiating. Burial will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Asheboro.

The family will be at the church at 1 p.m., prior to the service.

Helen P. Westmoreland
LIBERTY - Helen Patrum Westmoreland, 73, of 4028 W. Greensboro-Chapel Hill Road, died Friday, Dec. 20, 2002, at Hospice House in Burlington.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Monday at Mt. Zion Baptist Church, where she was a member, with the Rev. Joe Hicks officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

She was a native of Alamance County, a volunteer at Alamance Regional Hospital and was a retired employee of K-Mart in Burlington.

Surviving are husband, Thomas L. Westmoreland of the home; daughter, Rozanne W. White of Orlando, Fla.; son, Thomas L. Westmoreland Jr. of Liberty; a granddaughter.

The family will be at Loflin Funeral Home, Liberty, 6:30-8:30 Sunday, other times at the home.

ROBBINS - Alberta Brower, 77, of N.C. 705, died Friday, Dec. 20, 2002 at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital, Pinehurst.

Funeral service will be noon at New Zion A.M.E. Zion Church, Robbins, with the Rev. A.C. Winfield officiating. Burial will follow in New Zion Cemetery.

Surviving are daughters, Rev. Addie Clark of Robbins, Marion Buie of Sanford and Johnetta Bond of Fort Washington, Md.; sons, Everette Brower Jr. of Portsmouth, Va., and Donald Brower of Bronx, N.Y.; sisters, Ollie Orr and Emma Mattox, both of Robbins; brother, Charlie Samberger of Robbins.

The family will be at the church, Monday, 7-8 p.m.

CARTHAGE - Robert L. Weidman, 79, of Hardy Road, died Saturday, Dec. 21, 2002.

Funeral service will be Tuesday at N. Rossi and Son Funeral Home, Schnectady, N.Y. Burial will follow in St. Anthony's Cemetery in Glenville, N.Y.

He was a native of Schnectady and a U.S. Marine Corps veteran. He retired after 47 years with the General Electric Co.

Surviving are wife, Philomena Mazzucco Weidman of Carthage; daughter, Nancy Lorette of Carthage; son, Roy Weidman of Apalachin, N.Y.; three grandchildren.

Fry and Prickett Funeral Home, Carthage, is in charge of arrangements.

Emma Martin
PAOLI, Ind. - Emma Martin, 84, formerly of Fredricksburg, died Wednesday, Dec. 18, 2002, at Scott County Health Care Center, Paoli, Ind.

Funeral service was 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 21, at McAdams Mortuary Inc., Paoli, with Brother Harvey McAdams officiating. Burial followed in Horner's Chapel Cemetery, Fredericksburg.

She was the widow of Gilbert Martin, a homemaker and attended Paoli Wesleyan Church.

Surviving are sons, George L. Clark of Frankfort, Ind., Robert Martin of Ellettsville, Ind., and Hershel Martin of Asheboro; stepdaughter, Beulah Ryan of Clarksville, Ind.; brother, Milford Martin of Richmond, Va.; five grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren.
