Lucille Hearne Swaney

Lucille Hearne Swaney, a long-time resident of Cary and previously of Norfolk, Va., died at Western Wake Medical Center on Sunday, March 21, 2004. She was 97.

A native of Greenville, she was the oldest living of 10 children born to Louisa Star May and W.A.B. Hearne. She received her bachelor's degree from East Carolina University and her master's from the University of Virginia. She was a junior high school science teacher for 35 years and retired at age 66. Lucille taught in Kitty Hawk and Washington, N.C., and Norfolk, Va. She was a member of the Alpha Delta Kappa Society and a charter member at Woodland Terrace in Cary.

She was predeceased by her brothers, Bill Hearne of Clifton Forge, Va., Champ Hearne of Virginia Beach, Va., and her sister, Laura Marcus of Pasadena, Calif. She is survived by her brother, Marcellus B. Hearne of Woodland Terrace, Cary; and Star May Williams of Phoenix, Ariz., Ada Ray of Cary and Venetia Pentecost of Cary.

Lucille was an inspiration and will be missed by all who knew her.

Arrangements were handled by Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, Cary.

LeRoy 'Roy' Smith

LeRoy "Roy" Smith of Raleigh, a loving husband, devoted father and grandfather, and friend of many, died Sunday, March 21, 2004. LeRoy is survived by his wife, Judy Edwards Smith; sons, Kevin LaRoy Smith and wife, Amanda Ellen, of Wilmington, and Jeffrey Beal Smith and wife, Amanda Lanclos, of League City, Texas; grandchildren, Harrison Lee Smith and Tylar Cotton; and his special nieces and nephews.

LeRoy was preceded in death by his parents, Irving and Retha Mae Corbett Smith.

He attended Whiteville High School, graduating in 1957, and continued his education at N.C. State University. LeRoy was employed as an engineer with the N.C. Department of Transportation, Roadway Design, for 30 years. An advocate for youth sports, he spent many hours at the Wilders Grove Youth Center. He enjoyed bowling and golf with his friends in Raleigh, Apex and the Carpenter community. For 35 years, fishing with the "McClammers" and his "buddies" at the N.C. Outer Banks was also one of his great passions.

A memorial service conducted by Pastor Mike Gast will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 25, at St. James United Methodist Church, Raleigh, where LeRoy was a member. The family will receive friends after the service at the church and at all other times at the home. The Rev. Jim Boltz will conduct a private graveside service in Good Hope Baptist Church Cemetery, Carpenter.

Memorial contributions may be made to Good Hope Baptist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 6628, Cary, NC 27519; or to St. James United Methodist Church, 3808 St. James Church Road, Raleigh, NC 27604.

Services are entrusted to Apex Funeral Home, 511 W. Williams St., (N.C. 55), Apex (362-8233).

Myrtle Ann Dean

Myrtle Ann Dean, 56, of Raleigh, died Monday, March 22, 2004, at her home.

A graveside service conducted by the Rev. Peter Dubbleman was held Wednesday, March 24, at New Hill Baptist Church Cemetery, New Hill.

Mrs. Dean is survived by her daughter, Erika Dean of the home; mother, Meriam Matthews of Cary; stepsons, Eric and Michael Dean of Raleigh; nieces, Jennifer Smith of Apex and Cindy Deleur of Apex; and many other family and friends who loved her.

The family received friends Tuesday evening, March 23, at Apex Funeral Home.

Carl L. Dasen

Carl Leroy Dasen, 82, of Cary died Tuesday, March 23, 2004, at Western Wake Medical Center in Cary.

Mr. Dasen was one of nine children born to the late Theodore and Louise R. Dasen. He grew up in Flint, Mich., and was a World War II U.S. Army veteran. The family lived in Saginaw, Mich., where he was an engineer with Lufkin Rule (now Cooper Tools), moving to North Carolina in the late 1960s when the new plant was opened in Apex. He retired from Cooper Tools several years ago.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Esther Mae Winch Dasen, who died in 1995, as well as brothers, Harold, Gerald, Arnold and Ted, and sisters, Marguerite, Dorothy and Alice.

Surviving are a daughter, Judy Barnhardt of Apex; sons, Alan Dasen and his wife, Faye, of Southern Pines, Dale Dasen and his wife, Carrie, of Youngsville, Wayne Dasen and Dennis Dasen, both of Cary; a sister, Loretta Oberpriller and her husband, Herb, of Flint, Mich.; and grandchildren, Wesley and Lenora Dasen of Southern Pines, David and Lindsey Barnhardt of Apex and Rachel and Laura Dasen of Youngsville.

Funeral services will be held Friday, March 26, at 11 a.m. at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 200 S.E. Maynard Road, Cary. Burial will follow at Hillcrest Cemetery in Cary.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday, March 25, from 7 to 9 p.m.

Memorials may be made to Brooks Avenue Church of Christ, 700 Brooks Ave., Raleigh, NC 27607.

John Newton Collins

John Newton Collins, 81, of Spring Arbor, Apex, died Saturday, Dec. 27, 2003, due to an extended illness. Mr. Collins was a retired watchmaker with Montgomery Ward and was a member of Woodhaven Baptist Church. A graveside service was held Monday, Dec. 29, at Apex Cemetery with the Rev. Jack Watson officiating.

Mr. Collins is survived by his sisters, Cynthia C. Furlong and husband Dr. N. Burr Furlong of Houston, Texas, Mattie C. Stephens and husband Charles H. of Clayton, and Genevieve C. Jones and husband B.C. Jones of Apex; his brothers, Fred T. Collins Jr. and wife Mildred of Bellevue, Texas, Ivey K. Collins and wife Betty of Seattle, Wash., and Vernon Q. Collins and wife Bernice of Poquoson, Va.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of one's choice. Arrangements were by Apex Funeral Home.

Joe Patrick Garruba

Joe Patrick Garruba, 78, of Cary died Friday, Dec. 26, 2003, at Cary Health and Rehabilitation Center. Mr. Garruba was a tax assessor for Allegheny County, Pa. He was very active in local politics.

A funeral Mass was held Tuesday, Dec. 30, at Sacred Heart Cathedral in Raleigh. Burial followed at Apex Cemetery.

Mr. Garruba is survived by his niece, Gloria T. Crutchfield and husband Bob of Cary; great-nephew, Edward David Selzer and wife Richelle of Louisburg; great-niece, Gloria S. Gialenios and husband Michael of Charlotte; great-great nephews Damon Joseph Gialenios and Benjamin Gialenios of Charlotte; several other family members; sisters, Mary Jane Schneider and husband Lewis of Moon Township, Pa., and Theresa D’Ambrosia of Pittsburgh; and his wife, Frances Garruba of Raleigh.

The family received friends Sunday, Dec. 28, and Monday, Dec. 29, at Apex Funeral Home.

Memorial contributions may be given to American Diabetes Association, 434 Fayetteville St. Mall, 2 Hannover Square, Suite 1600, Raleigh, NC 27602-1764.

Mary Irene Moran

Mary Irene Moran, 90, of Cary, formerly of Martinsville, N.J., died Dec. 26, 2003, at Western Wake Medical Center surrounded by her loving family.

Mrs. Moran was a graduate of Brooklyn College. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. Her family was her greatest accomplishment. A funeral Mass was held Wednesday, Dec. 31, at St. Andrew The Apostle Catholic Church in Apex. Burial followed in Apex Cemetery.

Mrs. Moran is survived by her husband of 58 years, William J. Moran of Cary; daughters, Barbara Shearer and husband Dan of Springfield, Va., and Patricia McCarthy of Raleigh; grandchildren, David W. McCarthy, Kathleen L. McCarthy, Natasha D. Shearer and Alya I. Shearer; and several nieces and nephews.

The family received friends Tuesday evening, Dec. 30, at Apex Funeral Home. A prayer service also was held.

Beulah Varina Pollard Jones

Beulah Varina Pollard Jones, 97, of Penny Road, Raleigh, died Tuesday, Dec. 23, 2003, at Cary Health and Rehabilitation Center.

Born in Wake County on Nov. 8, 1906, she was the youngest child of James Robert Pollard and Martha Agnes Mann Pollard. She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Lee Reginald Jones; brother, David Pollard; and sisters, Alta Prince and Zula Eatman.

She is survived by a daughter, Laura Lee Jones Simpson and son-in-law Bobby Lee Simpson of Raleigh; three grandchildren, Sandra Leigh Simpson Denmark and husband David of Benson, Bobby Lee Simpson Jr. of Ferrum, Va., and James Reginald Simpson and wife Bobbi Carol of Simpsonville, S.C.; two great-grandchildren, Bailey Nicole Simpson and Cameron McKenzie Simpson; and special friend and housemate, Essie Simpson Edwards.

A funeral service was conducted Sunday afternoon, Dec. 28, at Swift Creek Baptist Church by the Rev. Billy Dennis. Burial followed in the church cemetery. The family received friends following the service and at other times at the home of Bobby and Laura Simpson.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the SPCA of Wake County, 219-B Garner Business Court, Garner, NC 27529.

Arrangements were by Apex Funeral Home.
