Annie P. Jones

Annie Louise Pierce Jones, 94, departed this life on Friday, December 21, 2012. She spent her first Christmas in Heaven. Funeral services were held on December 24 at 11 a.m. at Catawba Springs Christian Church, located on Ten Ten Road in Apex. The family received friends from 10 to 11 a.m., one hour prior to the service. Interment followed the service at the church cemetery.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Don and Betty Pierce, and her husband, Homer Ray Jones.

Mrs. Pierce is survived by her four daughters, Nancy Mills and husband, Raymond, of Apex, Peggy Woody of Cary, Marilyn Hardee and husband, Manfred, of Angier, and Cherry Milton and husband, Michael, of Lillington; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Special appreciation to Brookfield Assisted Living in Lillington, N.C., for their concern and care of our mother.

Flowers are accepted or memorial contributions may be made to Catawba Springs Christian Church Youth Group.

Eddie Thomas “E.T.” Moore

Eddie Thomas “E.T.” Moore, 84, of Fuquay-Varina, beloved husband, father, grandfather and brother, passed away on December 26, 2012 at his home. He was born April 10, 1928 in Harnett County to the late Eva Davis and Eddie Rountree Moore.

Thomas, or E.T. as he was known to many, made his living as a farmer for more than 45 years, but his life was devoted to service to God, his family and his community. He was an active member of Rawls Baptist Church for 70 years where he served as a deacon first at age 18 and taught Sunday school to a variety of ages for 56 years. In his community he served in many positions in Harnett County including the Board of Education Advisory Council for LaFayette High School for 12 years as well as the Harnett County Board of Equalization and Review to which he was appointed at its inception in January 1997 and on which he served until December 2012. He believed that every Harnett County resident should be able to contact their government offices free of charge and successfully petitioned to make it a local phone call for all of the county’s residents.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Doris Mangum Moore; daughters, Kathy Moore Watkins, and husband, Dan, Susan Vickers Smith, and husband, Randy; grandchildren, Jessica Blair Vickers, Morgan Leigh Smith and Andrew John Thomas Smith; sister, Sue Betty Gardner Kelly and a host of nieces and nephews.

Friends visited the family at Rawls Baptist Church on December 29 from 1 to 3 p.m., and at other times at the home. A service of worship and celebration of his life was held following the visitation at 3 p.m. at Rawls Baptist Church, located at 10665 U. S. 401 North in Fuquay-Varina. Interment followed in the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Rawls Baptist Church Building Fund in his memory.

The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude to Dr. Ray Cheely, cardiologist, and Dr. Joe Currin, family practitioner, who provided excellent, compassionate medical care for many years and were considered not just his doctors, but his friends.

Allen (Al) Adcock Smith
October 21, 2013

Raleigh - Allen (Al) Adcock Smith, 89. passed away Monday, October 21, 2013. Funeral services will be held Friday, October 25, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. at Forest Hills Baptist Church, 201 Dixie Trail, Raleigh. The family will receive friends prior to the service, from 12:30 - 2:00 p.m. at the church. Interment will follow the service at Raleigh Memorial Park.

Mr. Smith was born May 20, 1924 in Wake County, the son of Wesley Owen and Tazzie Adcock Smith. He graduated from Fuquay Springs High School in 1942. He served in the U.S. Merchant Marines from 1943-1945. After World War II he graduated from General Motors Institute in Flint, Michigan. In 1954 he acquired his first car dealership which later became Al Smith Buick in Raleigh, NC.

He was active in many business and civic organizations and subsequently served as chairman/president of the N.C. Aero Club, Raleigh Merchants Bureau, Raleigh Chamber of Commerce, Better Business Bureau and served on the board of the Raleigh YMCA. He faithfully served as deacon and in other capacities at Forest Hills Baptist Church. During Governor Scott's administration he served on the advisory board for the civil air patrol and also received the Meritorious Service Award from the U.S. Air Force for outstanding work in search and rescue.

Al was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Weathers Smith and his son, Wesley R. Smith and siblings William O. Smith, John W. Smith and Sophia Smith Phelps.

Surviving are his children, Stephen A. Smith of Clemmons, NC, Barbara Smith Clark and husband Tom of Richmond, VA, and Jane Smith Powell and husband Tim of Fuquay-Varina; daughter-in-law, Carolyn Murray Smith of Pinehurst, NC; grandchildren, Hylton and Baron Smith, Catherine Clark Rendell and Rebekah Clark Giannini, Wesley Smith and Jacqueline Smith Capasso and Anna Powell Schaffer. Eight great grandchildren also survive.

Frederick Donald Phelps, Sr. October 18, 2013

Raleigh - Frederick Donald Phelps, Sr., age 85, died Friday, October 18, 2013. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, October 23, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. at Church Alive, 4309 Umstead Drive, Fuquay-Varina. Interment will follow in the Greenlawn Memorial Gardens in Fuquay-Varina.

He is survived by his son, Don Phelps of Cary; daughters, Brenda Brooks of Cleveland, SC, and Lana P. Sorrell and husband, Mark of Willow Spring; three grandchildren, John Brooks and wife, Naz, Jaime Rosegren and husband, Rob and Trae Edwards and wife, Ashley; and one great-grandchild, Ryyan Brooks.

The family will receive friends from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 22, 2013 at Thomas Funeral Home, 401 N Ennis Street Fuquay-Varina.

Perritt Franklin (Frank) Cox
October 17, 2013

Fuquay-Varina - Perritt Franklin (Frank) Cox, age 83, went to be with his Lord and Savior on October 17, 2013 at his home at Windsor Point, the conclusion to a fruitful life.

Frank was born on September 21, 1930 in Ellington, S. C. He married Nan Kathleen McCuen on June 4, 1950 who he lovingly referred to as “Buddy”. They enjoyed 63 wonderful years together. Frank served in the United States Marine Corp during the Korean Conflict. He retired from Electrical Equipment Company in 1995. Frank was committed to his Lord. He showed this commitment through decades of work with the United Methodist Men. He also enjoyed fishing, the beach, and his beloved family.

Frank is survived by his wife, Nan M. Cox; sons, William (Bill) Roy Cox and wife, Diane, James (Jim) Edward Cox and wife, Susan, Russell Allen Cox and wife, Sheila, Kenneth (Kenny) Martin Cox and wife, Emily. “Pop” is also survived and loved by eleven grandchildren; Jacob Cox (Helen), Tiffany Cox, Gypsy Cox, Cristal Dupree (Mike), Chris Cox (Amanda), Caroline Johnsen (Bob), Corey Cox, Hannah Muthersbaugh (Scott), Daniel Cox, Amanda Dupuis (Jordan), and Joshua Cox and nine great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his father, William Shayler Cox and his mother, Arylla Perritt Cox.

Friends are welcome to visit the family at the home of Kenneth and Emily Cox, 5700 Mulligan Way, Fuquay-Varina, NC from 2:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 19, 2013.

The memorial service will be held at Fuquay-Varina United Methodist Church, 100 S. Judd Parkway SE, Fuquay-Varina, NC on Sunday October 20, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. The family will be receiving friends starting at 1:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations should be made to Amedisys Hospice Care, 220 New Fidelity Court, Garner, NC 27529 or the Columbarium Fund at the Fuquay-Varina United Methodist Church.

George Monroe Bullock
October 16, 2013

Fuquay-Varina - George Monroe Bullock, age 71, died Wednesday, October 16, 2013 at Wake Med Cary Hospital after a battle with a lung disease. His sons were at his bedside.

He was predeceased by his parents, Ed and Reba Bullock and his brother, Donald Bullock.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Donna, and his sons, Monte and his girls, Rebecca and Georgia, and his son, Arnie and wife, Beth and sons, A.J. and Joseph.

After graduation from ECU, he taught high school science at Washington High School in Washington, NC. He then worked 18 years for Schering Plough. For the next 22 years, he was owner and insurance agent at Dickens Insurance Agency until his retirement.

His hobbies were fishing, traveling, and mostly watching his sons and grandchildren play sports, He also enjoyed serving on the Board of Directors of the FV Volunteer Firefighters Association and his membership in the Needmore Ruritan Club.

Many thanks to Dr. Vora and the nurses at Wake Med Cary ICU.

The funeral service will be at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 19, 2013 at Fuquay-Varina Baptist Church. Burial will follow at Wake Chapel Memorial Gardens. A visitation and reception to celebrate his life will follow the committal service at Fuquay-Varina Baptist Church.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Fuquay-Varina Baptist Church, 301 N Woodrow Street, Fuquay-Varina, NC 27526 or to the Needmore Ruritan Club on Bass Lake Road, c/o Maurice Weaver, 8029 Kensington Drive, Fuquay-Varina, NC.
