Susan H. Miller

April 4, 1952-Dec. 9, 2004

Susan Holmquist Miller, 52, passed away at home Dec. 9, 2004, surrounded by her loving family and friends. She fought a courageous battle with breast cancer for three years. She has been an inspiration for many people.

Sue was born at Rex Hospital and lived her entire life in Wake County. She graduated from Cary High School in 1970 and in 1972 she married her high school sweetheart, Butch Miller. In 1974, she and her husband, Butch, moved to Cary and began Miller Printing, where they worked together every day for more than 30 years. She prided herself in forming personal relationships with her customers, knowing them all by name and establishing not just business connections but cherished friendships as well.

She was the proud mother of two sons, Chris and Paul, whom she supported throughout all of their endeavors and accomplishments. She was recently blessed with the arrival of her first grandchild, Jordan, who was the light of her life for two short months.

Sue is survived by her husband of 32 years, Butch Miller; two sons, Chris and wife, Amy of Apex, and Paul of Vancouver, British Columbia; mother, Jane E. Holmquist of Raleigh; sister, Rose Marie Wheeler and husband, David of Youngsville; brother, William and wife, Mary of Holly Ridge; and granddaughter, Jordan Elise Miller of Apex. Her father, Everett Holmquist, predeceased Sue.

Butch and the family would like to thank all of their friends, family members and neighbors for all the support shown to them during this very trying time. They feel very blessed to have your friendships and Sue was overwhelmed at the support you showed her during her fight with cancer. She was very proud of the support you gave her in helping raise money for the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure.

Her team, "Hope for Hopp, " raised more than $6, 700 for this year's race. Thank you very much.

Homer Gray Duncan

Homer Gray Duncan, 78, of Whiteville died in an automobile accident Thursday morning, Dec. 9, 2004. He was the son of the late Richard Edgar Duncan and Bessie Cameron Duncan, and one of 10 children. Homer attended Whiteville High School and served his country as a member of the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was a retired auto parts salesman.

He married the late Lorena Blackwell Duncan in 1948 and was a devoted husband until her death in 2001, staying faithfully by her side through her extended illness. Truly a man who never met a stranger, he enjoyed his life and all of his friends. His family meant everything to him and he doted on his children, his three granddaughters, and his many nieces and nephews. He also befriended every child he ever met, as his gentle nature and big smile made them know he was a child at heart.

He enjoyed all forms of sports. As a young man, he was an excellent competitive athlete, a boxer and swimmer. He loved to play softball and golf, doing both until his health forced him into retirement.

Having grown up on a farm, Homer loved the outdoors and nature, particularly God's creatures. He could sit for hours and watch birds and squirrels, and would drive for hours to see a deer. As a youth, he was known to hunt alligators in the Green Swamp.

He dearly loved living in his community with his neighbors and going to church with his Sunday school classmates. The things in life he held most dear were his family, his religion, his friends, the Atlanta Braves, the Whiteville WolfPack, the North Carolina Tar Heels, good home cooking and seafood.

He is survived by his daughter and traveling companion, Sandra Marie Duncan of the home; his son and daughter-in-law, Homer G. Duncan Jr. and Catherine A. Duncan; his sister, Doris D. Moore; and his three granddaughters, Margarette Elizabeth Duncan, Catherine Marie Duncan and Meredith Cameron Duncan, all of Cary. He also is survived by four sisters-in-law, Mrs. Reba Bowen of of Lake Waccamaw; Mrs. Chick Duncan of Mt. Vernon, N.Y., Mrs. Dorothy Duncan of Whiteville and Mrs. Connie Duncan of Tampa, Fla. A plethora of nieces and nephews, each of whom he considered his favorite, and a few stray dogs and cats also survive him.

His family would like to extend great thanks to the staffs of The Donut Shop and the Holiday Restaurant, who took great care of their most loyal customer.

His funeral service was held Saturday, Dec. 11, at the Whiteville United Methodist Church, with the Rev. David Benson officiating and burial following at Western Prong Cemetery. The family received friends at the gravesite after the ceremony.

Memorials can be made to Whiteville United Methodist Church, Mishop Springs United Methodist Church and the American Cancer Society.

A service celebrating her life and homegoing was held Wednesday, Dec. 15, in the Apex Funeral Home Chapel. A graveside committal service followed in Carey Baptist Church Cemetery, in Vance County outside of Henderson.
