Regina B. Welch

Regina B. Welch, 72, joined her husband in Heaven on Thursday, June 8, 2006.

A native of New York City, N.Y., she resided in Cary, Dunnellon, Fla., and most recently in Yorktown, Va.

She retired as an office manager for The Cary News. She was a member of American Legion Post 0058 and VFW Post 7991 for 32 years.

Mrs. Welch was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas E. Welch Jr.

Survivors include three sons, Alan J. Welch and wife, Gina, of Alexandria, Va., Gregory T. Welch of the Philippines and Thomas E. Welch III and wife, Mary, of Yorktown, Va.; five grandchildren, Gregory T. Welch Jr., Christopher Michael Welch, Thomas E. Welch IV, Brian Charles Welch and Jennifer Susan Welch; and sister, Margaret Bollman. She will be missed by a host of other loving friends and family.

The family will receive friends Monday, June 12, from 4 to 6:30 p.m. at Peninsula Funeral Home with a funeral service to begin at 6:30 p.m. Burial will be in Quantico National Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to American Cancer Society, 11835 Canon Blvd., Suite A-102, Newport News, VA 23606.

Albert George Butler

Albert George Butler, 46, of Apex died Friday, June 2, 2006.

Al was a wonderful, loving husband and father. He was retired from the U.S. Navy and employed with WYETH in Sanford.

Al is survived by his wife, Cathy Butler; children, Courtney, Colin and Alec; father and mother, George J. and Giovanna H. Butler of Florida; parents-in-law, Charles and Ann Thompson of Mandeville, La.; sister, Rosanne Butler of Lake Mary, Fla.; brother, George Butler of Orlando, Fla.; and niece, Jessica Butler of Lake Mary, Fla.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 7, at Apex Funeral Home, 550 W. Williams St. (N.C. 55), Apex. A funeral service will begin at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday in the Apex Funeral Home Chapel.

Memorial contributions may be made to American Heart Association, Memorial Processing Center, P.O. Box 5216, Glen Allen, VA 23058-5216.

Laura Ann Hopper Wackerman

Laura Ann Hopper Wackerman, 49, of Apex died Wednesday, June 21, 2006, peacefully, surrounded by her family at Rex Nursing Care of Apex.

She was employed by Tipper Tie of Apex. Laura was active in the Humble United Methodist Church Youth Ministry in Texas, St. Francis United Methodist Church Women and Emmaus Movement. She was involved with the Good Shepherd Soup Kitchen and Disciple Bible Study. Laura enjoyed her activities with the Raleigh Durham Caged Bird Society and Charlotte Artillery 10th NCST Company C Group.

Laura is survived by her husband of 25 years, Mark Phillip Wackerman; father Richard "Dick" Hopper of Houston, Texas; brothers, John Hopper of Houston, Texas, and Robert Hopper of Humble, Texas; aunts, Linda "Vicky" Jeane of Houston, Texas, and Henrietta Mayer of Freeport, La.; and niece and nephew.

Laura was preceded in death by her mother, Wilsie Hopper.

A celebration of Laura's life will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday, June 25, at St. Francis United Methodist Church, 2965 Kildaire Farm Road, Cary, conducted by the Rev. Lib Campbell. The family will receive friends following the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Francis United Methodist Church, 2965 Kildaire Farm Road, Cary, NC 27511.

Arrangements are entrusted to Apex Funeral Home, 550 W. Williams St. (N.C. 55), Apex.

James H. Williams

James Howard Williams, age 80, of Benson died Sunday, June 25, 2006, at WakeMed Cary Hospital.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Benson Pentecostal Free Will Baptist Church. Officiating will be the Rev. Glenn McCullen, the Rev. Barry Thomas and Mr. David Williams. Entombment will follow in Roselawn Cemetery with military honors. The family will receive friends at Rose and Graham Funeral Home in Benson 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday.

Mr. Williams was born June 13, 1926, in Harnett County to the late Marion Butler and Ochie Ellen Parker Williams. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Retha Lee Williams, and a son, James Keith Williams.

Mr. Williams was retired from the R.L. Dresser Construction Company in Raleigh. He was a member of the Benson Pentecostal Free Will Baptist Church, was a U.S. Army veteran of WWII and was a member of the Banner Post 109 American Legion.

Survivors include sons and daughters-in-law, Michael and Dale Williams of Cary and Earl and Debbie Williams of Dunn; daughter-in-law Karen Williams of Greensboro; sister Evelyn Jackson of Farmville, Va; sister-in-law Betty Williams of Fayetteville; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Flowers are welcomed; however, memorials may be made to Benson PFWB Church, c/o Rachel Denning, P.O. Box 442, Benson, NC 27504.

Paul Kaplan

Paul Kaplan, 82, beloved husband of Lucille Kaplan, died Monday, June 26, 2006. He was born Aug. 8, 1923 in Louisville, Ky., to the late Jacob and Cecelia Kaplan.

He attended Purdue University and graduated with a chemical engineering degree from Rose Hillman Institute. He served in the U.S. Navy. He enjoyed playing golf and bridge with the seniors at Prestonwood Country Club.

Paul will be remembered for his devotion to his family, especially his son David, and grandchildren, Katherine and Christina, and his loyalty to his friends and former co-workers.

Paul is preceded in death by his sisters, Sarah Carter and Mary Murphy. A memorial service will be held at a later date. For those who wish, memorials may be made in Paul's memory to the American Cancer Society, 11 S. Boylan Ave., Raleigh, NC 27603.

Lucille “Lucy” Deneen Roberts

Lucille "Lucy" Deneen Roberts, 88, of 733 N. Gurney St., Burlington, died suddenly at Edgewood Place on Tuesday, June 27, 2006 at 8:30 p.m.

A native of Accomac County, Va., she was the daughter of William Burns Deneen and Clara Urania Miller Deneen, both deceased. After graduating from Limestone College, Ms. Deneen pursued graduate studies in English at UNC-Chapel Hill. She subsequently taught English and French at Great House School in Louisville, Ky., and high school in Spruce Pine. She and her husband, Dr. J. Ernest Roberts, settled in Burlington to rear their family. While there, she was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and a choir member for over 20 years. She was a docent for the N.C. Museum of Art in Raleigh and a member of local book and garden clubs.

Survivors include two daughters and their husbands: Jane Roberts Mooney and Dr. Al Mooney of Cary and Ann Roberts Vitale and Stefano Vitale of Blanche and New York; and five grandchildren: A. John Mooney IV of Charlottesville, Va., Rachel Mooney Spence and husband Jonathan Spence of Southport, Graham L. Roberts and wife Rachel Roberts of Raleigh, Hartwell L. Roberts of Raleigh, and Lucy K. Roberts of Raleigh.

The funeral will be conducted at the Chapel of the First Presbyterian Church of Burlington on Friday, June 30, at 11 a.m. by the Rev. Carrie Rhoads Tuttle. The family will greet friends at the Session Room of the church immediately following the service. Friends are invited to join the family at Magnolia Cemetery for the 1:30 p.m. committal service.

Memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church Music Fund, 508 W. Davis St., Burlington, NC 27215 or to the charity of one's choice.

Carolyn Catherine Grohowski

Carolyn Catherine Grohowski, 65, of Cary died May 24, 2006.

She was born in Luzerne County, Pa., on Jan. 3, 1941, to the late Benjamin and Bernadine Crahalla.

Surviving are her sons, Dave Grohowski and wife, Chrissy, and Mike Grohowski, all of Raleigh; sister, Bernadine Young of Washington, D.C.; and brothers, Benjamin Crahalla of Audubon, Pa., Henry Crahalla of Gahanna, Ohio, and Ronald Crahalla of Wilkes-Barre, Pa.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Chester Joseph "Chet" Grohowski.

Carol was a graduate of Wilkes College and was a medical technologist before starting her family. She liked to golf, travel and garden, and enjoyed decorating her home. Family and friends were very dear to her and she enjoyed everyone's company.

The family offers a special gratitude to her oncologist and the wonderful doctors and personnel at Duke's Adult Bone Marrow Transplant Clinic.

A gathering of friends and family will be held Sunday, May 28, from 2 to 4 p.m. at 105 Old Pro's Way in Cary. Parking is limited, so please carpool or meet at Prestonwood Country Club. A private ceremony will be for family only afterward.
