Sara Williams Saunders

Sara Williams Saunders, age 46, loving wife and mother, died peacefully at home after a nine-month valiant battle with cancer. Sara confronted her illness with a level of grace and courage that was truly a testament of her abiding faith, hope, and love in her Lord Jesus Christ.

Sara was the daughter of Charles Weaver Williams of Cary and the late Elizabeth Harper Williams. She was born on Halloween in 1960. She was a Cary native and was educated in Wake County Schools except for the two years she and her family lived in Lima, Peru in 1967-1969. Always an excellent student, Sara was an honors student at Cary High School, where she graduated in 1979. She went on to earn her bachelor's degree in mathematics from Meredith College in 1983, graduating magna cum laude. Upon graduation, she began a career that took her to employment with CP&L;, IBM, Glaxo-Smith-Kline, and then to RH Donnelly Inc. While Sara enjoyed her career, her greatest joy was the life she built with her husband Phil and their two sons Kenneth and Hayden. She particularly enjoyed the outdoors with them, whether it was a baseball game, a soccer game, hiking in the mountains or being on the coast of North Carolina or the coast of Maine. She was a devoted wife and mother, sister and daughter.

In addition to her mother, Sara was predeceased by a stillborn baby girl, whom she and Phil named Ann. Her grandparents John and Addie Weaver Williams of Cleveland, and Preston and Estelle Fordham Harper of Deep Run also predeceased Sara.

Surviving to cherish her memory are her husband of 19 years, Philip Whitney Saunders, and their sons, Kenneth and Hayden, ages 15 and 13; her father, Charles Williams of Glenaire in Cary; brothers, Scott Williams and his wife Lori of Helena Ark., and Wesley Williams and his wife Jennifer of Cary; sister, Mary Williams-Kotnik and her husband Andrew of Cary; her in-laws Roger and Addie Saunders of Hollis, N.H.; sister-in-law, Kendall Saunders Bunce and her husband Scott and their daughter Arielle of Yardley, Pa.; nieces, Megan and Morgan Williams and nephew Steven Kotnik, all of Cary. Sara leaves behind many aunts, uncles and cousins and many, many friends.

A memorial service was held Friday, June 22, at Kirk of Kildaire Presbyterian Church, 200 High Meadow Dr, Cary at 11 a.m. with the pastoral staff officiating. The family received visitors from 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, June 21, at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 200 S.E. Maynard Road, Cary.

Sara's family would like to express profound thanks to her church family at Kirk of Kildaire Presbyterian for the support, prayers, meals, rides, and show of Christian love she received during her illness. Thanks also go to many friends who provided the same for her. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Wake Interfaith Hospitality Network or Kirk of Kildaire Memorial Garden Fund, both through the Kirk of Kildaire Presbyterian Church, 200 High Meadow Dr., Cary, NC 27511.

Mary Ann Steward

Mary Ann Steward, 61, of Cary, died Saturday, July 21, at Rex Hospital in Raleigh. Mrs. Steward was born in Irvington, N.J. on Nov. 23, 1945 to Shepherd Frederick and Louise Keller Godbold.

She received her BA from Montclair University in Latin and History and her MA in Counseling for Rider University. Mrs. Steward taught Latin for 37 years in the Freehold Regional School District, pioneering the AP Latin program and served as advisor to the Latin Club. Mrs. Steward frequently took students to nationwide Latin competitions. Mrs. Steward also taught Latin at Southern Lee High School in Sanford, NC. Mrs. Steward served on the Nationwide Advisory Board for the AP Latin test.

She was teacher of the year in 2004. She truly made Latin come alive for her students. Mrs. Steward was a former president of the New Jersey Classical Association. She was a former Communicant of St. John's in Lakehurst, N.J. and more recently she was a Communicant of St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church in Apex.

She is survived by her husband, William H. Steward; daughter, Karen Steward Zarrelli and husband, Chuck of Apex; grandson, Dillon Zarrelli also of Apex; sister, Barbara Godbold of Brick, NJ; She is also survived by 3 aunts and an uncle and many cousins. She leaves behind her faithful pets, Ursula and Cicero.

The family will receive friends 6:00 to 7:30 pm on Tuesday, July 24, at Apex Funeral Home, 550 W. Williams St. (Hwy 55), Apex. There will be a prayer service beginning at 7:30 p.m.

Viewing in Brick, NJ will be on Thursday from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. at Weatherhead and Young Funeral Home, 885 Mantoloking, Brick, N.J. 08723-5260. (732-920-1811),

A Mass of Resurrection will be 10 a.m. Friday at St. John's Roman Catholic Church, Lakehurst, N.J. Burial will follow in St. Mary of the Lake Cemetery in Lakewood, N.J.

Memorial contribution may be made to the American Cancer Association, PO Box 22718 Oklahoma City, OK 73123-1718; or the Wake County SPCA, 200 Petfinder Lane, Raleigh, NC 27603.

Gloria Bossak

June 3, 2007 on the 66th anniversary of her wedding, Gloria Bossak joined her husband, Mortimer Bossak, in death. She was 86 and living at Woodland Terrace in Cary at the time of her passing. A native of Long Island, N.Y., she retired to Boynton Beach, Fla., before moving to North Carolina to be near family. Her ashes will be co-mingled with her husband's so that they can be together forever.

Gloria was a gentle and caring matriarch and a devoted wife. Together Gloria and "Mort" worked hard to raise a family and then spent retirement traveling the world. They especially loved cruises. Devoted parents, Gloria and Mort put aside their own dreams to provide a stable home for their daughters and many dogs. Caring grandparents, Gloria and Mort were always ready to listen, faithfully keep secrets and offer support when asked. While Mort never knew his great-grandchildren, Gloria made sure that they were loved enough for both. Her home was always a mecca of cookies and stuffed puppies and mountains of photos.

After becoming a widow, Gloria loved her friends and spent much time socializing and game playing. She served on the Residents Board at Woodland Terrace. As her mobility diminished towards the end of her life, she especially loved QVC shopping and her great-grandchildren.

She is survived by two daughters; Barbara Van Oostrum of Cary and Patricia Sherrick and husband, Ed, of Connecticut; five grandchildren, Amy Engler and husband, Ray, of Cary, Lauri Van Oostrum of Cary, Steven Sherrick of Connecticut, Michael Sherrick and wife, Rosanna, of Connecticut and Suzanne Sherter and husband, Craig, of Connecticut; and six great- grandchildren, Peter Engler, Zachary Engler, Kayla Engler, Matthew Sherter, Emma Sherter and Jason Sherrick. She was preceded in death by her parents, Isidore and Fannie Cooper; two sisters Adelaide Bernstein, Anna Kemp, and son-in law Walter Van Oostrum.

A service was held at Woodland Terrace on Sunday, June 10, at 4 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to your local SPCA or Wee Rescue.

Gerry E. Campbell

Gerry E. Campbell, 83, died October 2, 2007. She was born in Goldsboro on November 30, 1923 to the late Hartwell and Maud Edmundson. Mrs. Campbell was a member of Macedonia United Methodist Church.

Survivors include her husband of 64 years, Sidney “S.G.” Campbell; daughter, Patricia Currin and husband, Don of Clayton; grandchildren, Renee Frederick and husband, Trace of Middlesex and James Graham Johnson and wife, Shari of Mount Dora, FL; and 9 great-grandchildren, Stephanie, Kristal, Dutch, and Kaitlin Frederick and Amie, Alexzandria, Isaac, Noah, and Nathan Johnson.

A funeral service will be held 2:00 p.m. Friday, October 5, 2007 at Macedonia United Methodist Church, 2700 Jones Franklin Road, Cary. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends Thursday evening, October 4, 2007 from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 200 S.E. Maynard Road, Cary.

Elizabeth M. Taylor

Elizabeth M. Taylor, 85, formerly of Apex, died September 29, 2007. Her husband, Otis B. Taylor died April 12, 1995.

Born in Philadelphia, she was the daughter of the late Napoleon C. and Anna E. (Martin) Long.

She was a former president of the Ladies Auxiliary Fleet Reserve Association.

Survivors include her daughter, Patricia A. (fiancée of Philip Smiley), Tobyhanna of PA; and her two sons, Thomas M. (Judy) Taylor, Apex, and Ronald L. (Donna) Taylor, PA. Four grandchildren - Christopher Taylor, Elise Bender, Rebecca Taylor and Cynthia Taylor - also survive her.

The family will also receive friends 11 a.m. until noon on Friday, Oct. 5, at Apex Funeral Home. A graveside service will be held at noon in the Apex Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to American Diabetes Association Research Foundation 1701 North Beauregard Street Alexandria, VA 22311.

Arrangements are entrusted to Apex Funeral Home, 550 W. Williams St. (Hwy 55), Apex.

Jackie Tackett Musselman

Jackie Tackett Musselman, mother, daughter, sister, grandmother, and best friend, passed away October 2, 2007 from heart complications. Jackie was a friend to everyone who knew her. She was a gentle hand, a kind word, a listening ear, and a gentle soul. She was our strength, love, and hope for better things. She loved her family with all of her heart and cherished her friends. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Survivors include her children, Stephanie Marquez and husband, Maurilio; A.C. Musselman and wife, Sharon, and Michelle Musselman; mother, Dexter Tackett; sisters, Patricia Burns and Sheba Tackett; brothers, Rance, Hubert, and Torreon Tackett; grandchildren, Dustin, Dakota, and Jacob; step-grandchildren, Lauren and Lindsay; and granddog, Max.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Don.

A funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m. Friday, October 5, 2007 at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 200 S.E. Maynard Road, Cary.

The family will receive friends Thursday evening, October 4, 2007 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to the American Diabetes Association, 2418 Blue Ridge Road, Suite 206, Raleigh, NC 27607.

Mildred Warner Butler

Mildred Warner Butler passed away Friday, Oct. 5, 2007 in Cary. A native of Bladen County, she was the daughter of Molton Elijah Warner and Johnnie Roberta McKee. Mildred was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Garland Henry Butler, of Russellville, Kentucky.

Mildred graduated from Cary High School and retired after 30 plus years with the N.C. State Dept. of the Treasurer in the Retirement Systems Division. She was a long time member of Macedonia United Methodist Church. Mildred was an original “Southern Lady” who cherished her family, friends, community and church. She will be sorely missed by those who knew and loved her.

Mildred is survived by her sons Jeffrey C. Butler and his wife Lynn B. Butler of Raleigh and Anthony W. Butler of Holly Springs; granddaughters Kelly Butler Homlotis of Wake Forest and Mandi Rae Butler of Holly Springs, grandson Zachary C. Butler of Raleigh, sisters Christine Dover and Eva Jones, and brother L. D. Warner all of Raleigh.

Family received friends and family Oct. 7 at the Apex Funeral Home. Funeral services are scheduled for Monday, Oct. 8 at 11 a.m. in the Sanctuary of Macedonia United Methodist Church with burial to follow in Raleigh Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the “General Fund” of Macedonia United Methodist Church, 2700 Jones Franklin Road, Cary, NC 25618.
