Steven Carl Seamon

Steven Carl Seamon, 51, son of Marie Seamon and the late Cecil Carl Seamon of Mocksville, died at home Tuesday, June 19, 2007.

He is survived by his wife Dawn C. Seamon, son Christopher and daughter Heather.

A memorial service was held at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 23, at First United Methodist Church in Cary. Before the service, the family received friends starting at 1 p.m. in the Philathea Room at the church.

In lieu of flowers, the Seamons have requested that friends honor Steve’s memory through contributions to the Seamon Educational Special Account. Please e-mail seamoneducate@yahoo.com for further information.

Mary Betts

Mary Betts, 75, died July 16, 2007 at home surrounded by her family. She was born June 29, 1932 in Beaufort County, N.C. to George and Maybelle Pegram.

Mary was a hardworker who loved her family, animals, flowers and the Tar Heels. She was well thought of and loved by all who knew her. She will be greatly missed.

Robert W. Soucy

Robert W. Soucy, 77, died peacefully at home on Wednesday, July 18, 2007 after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Soucy was born July 7, 1930 in Providence, RI, the son of the late Raoul and Irene Soucy. He was preceded in death by his younger brother Raoul of Coventry, RI.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Caroline; son, Robert Jr. of New Jersey; daughter, Cindy Whitcomb and her fiancé, Charles Banik of New York; daughter, Deborah of Raleigh; daughter, Diane and her husband, William McNelis of Pennsylvania; his grandchildren, Justin Whitcomb and wife, Anna, Nathan Whitcomb, Katie and Carrie McNelis, Megan and Melissa Soucy; his great grandchildren, Brayden and Rory Whitcomb. Also he is survived by his beloved aunts, Hazel and Marion.

Soucy had a great love of the out doors. He spent many years as a Boy Scout Leader. And throughout his life he enjoyed skiing, golfing, and hiking with both family and friends. He was a long-time member of Newton Country Golf Club in New Jersey and most recently a member at Bentwinds Golf Club in Fuquay.

He was a U.S. Army veteran. His life work was in the X-ray field with General Electric and Picker X-ray.

Bob celebrated his 77th birthday on 7/7/07 surrounded by family and friends.

The family would like to express their appreciation to TLC Hospice for all of the care and kindness that they showed to him and his family.

A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, July 29, at Apex Funeral Home Chapel, 550 W. Williams St. (Hwy 55), Apex. The family will receive friends from 1-2 p.m. prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, donation may be made to the Appalachian Trail Conservancy at www. appalachiantrail.org or 1-304-535-6331. Donations may also be made to TLC Hospice at 1-800-377-5827.

Carl Thorington McGhee Jr.

Thorny McGhee, 81, of Raleigh went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Aug. 17, 2007. Thorny is survived by his loving children: Phyllis McLamb and husband John, Sheryl Watson and husband Bruce, Carl McGhee and wife Sharon and Mark McGhee. He has 10 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. Also surviving is a sister, Lillian Cameron.

His loving wife of 57 years, LaRue, and granddaughter Carla McLamb Jackson preceded him in death.

Thorny was a man of deep faith and commitment to Jesus Christ. He was a member of a men's quartet for many years singing at many churches and bible conferences. He was known for his wonderful tenor voice and his willingness to share his testimony in song. He proudly served in the United States Navy during WWII in the Atlantic and Pacific theaters.

He had a deep love for building quality homes. He was a self-employed brick mason for 30 years and co-owner of Precision Cabinet Works for 26 years until he retired so he could devote his time in the care of his loving wife. He loved life as he loved his family and friends.

The family would like to thank the staff in the care unit at Pittsboro Christian Village for the love and care they showed their dad during his stay there.

The family received friends on Sunday, Aug. 19 at Apex Funeral Home. Funeral services are 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 20, in the Chapel of Apex Funeral Home, 550 W. Williams St. (Hwy 55), Apex.

Burial followed in Oak Grove Cemetery in Durham.

Mildred Butler Sanderford

Mildred Butler Sanderford of Cary, NC, died Aug. 16, 2007 at the age of 101. She was born in Chocowinity, the eldest daughter of Laura and Frank Butler, and grew up in nearby Washington, where she was educated in the public schools before going on to North Carolina State College for Women (now UNC-G). A member of the class of 1927, she majored in English and education; taught school in Bath and Milton; and in 1927, married Everett C. Sanderford of Raleigh.

In 1936, Mildred and Everett moved to Cary where they spent the rest of their lives. Both were devoted to family, church and community. Mildred valued formal education and life-long learning. She was a leader in Cary Woman’s Club and its early efforts at community beautification: some of the club’s plantings of flowering trees and shrubs still enhance the historic district.

During WWII, she contributed to the war effort not just by helping with her victory garden and canning much of what she grew, but especially by returning to teaching. She was the first garden editor of The Cary News and a founding member of the Cary Garden Club. In 2002, the club honored her with a life membership in the Garden Club of North Carolina. She was also a longtime member of the First Baptist Church of Cary and recently of Westwood Baptist Church.

Her husband Everett, her sister Laura Meredith Benton, her brother John Butler, and two sons-in-law Harold McEntire and William Marley, preceded her in death. She is survived by her three daughters, Patricia Gruber and husband, Ira of Bellaire, TX, Everette Claire Marley of Cary, and Barbara McEntire of Cary; sister Dorothy Wright of Washington and Hope Mills and her sons, d 8 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandchild--all of whom will greatly miss her nurturing and love.

Sanderford's family will receive friends at Westwood Baptist Church, 200 Westhigh St., Cary on Saturday, Aug. 25, at 10 a.m. Funeral services will begin an hour later at the church with burial following at Hillcrest Cemetery in Cary.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the scholarship fund of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (1100 West Market St., PO Box 26170, Greensboro, NC 27402-6170 or donate.uncg.edu) or to the Westwood Baptist Church building fund.

Mildred’s family wishes to express its appreciation to Dr. James Parsons for his humane practice of medicine; to Mary, Ruth and Joanne for their many kindnesses in attending Mother; and to the staff of Mayview Convalescent Center and of Wake County Hospice for their care and wise guidance.

Cora Nipper Gates

Cora Nipper Gates, 71, died Aug. 17. She was born on May 11, 1936 in Wake County to Frank and Anna Nipper. Cora was a very active member of Westwood Baptist Church.

She is survived by her husband, James “Jim” R. Gates, Sr.; children Mary Kathryn Chase and her husband, Ben of Eden and James R. Gates Jr. and his wife Christy of Fuquay-Varina; sister-in-law Barbara Jones and husband Earl of Zebulon; and 5 grandchildren Leah and Maria Chase and Richard, Patrick and Lawren Gates.

A funeral service will be held 6 p.m. Monday, Aug. 20, at Westwood Baptist Church in Cary. The family will receive friends following the service. An Entombment service will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 21, at Raleigh Memorial Park Mausoleum.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to Westwood Baptist Church Building Fund, 200 Westhigh St., Cary, NC 27513 or Hospice of Wake County, 1300 St. Mary’s Street, Fourth Floor, Raleigh, NC 27605.

Juliana Cherie Hernandez

Juliana Cherie Hernandez of Cary passed away on Aug. 17, 2007 at the age of 6. She is survived by her parents Johny Jesus Hernandez and Elizabeth Ann Brooks, her sisters Catherine and Maria, and her brothers Michael and Joseph.

A visitation was held on Aug. 19 from 6-8 p.m. at Renaissance Funeral Home in Raleigh. The funeral took place at St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church in Cary on Aug. 20 at 10 a.m. In lieu of Flowers, donations may be sent to GRACE Christian School in Raleigh, or the Cary Teen Council.

Doris Forsyth Guess

Doris F. Guess, 86, died Aug. 21, 2007. She was born in Guilford County on Jan. 2, 1921 to Charles and Mamie Forsyth. During her working years, Mrs. Guess especially enjoyed working for her husband Marvin A. Guess Jr. at his State Farm Insurance Agency.

She was an active member of Ephesus Baptist Church and volunteered at Rex Hospital and the Baptist State Convention. Mrs. Guess will always be remembered as a sweet, loving, caring, friendly woman who adored her family and Wolfpack sports.

Surviving are her sons Steve and his wife Susan of Cary and Doug and wife Allison of Raleigh; grandchildren Lindsey, Zachary, Alex, Edie, Katherine, and Eric and his wife Katie.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her brother Garland Forsyth.

A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 25 at Ephesus Baptist Church. Burial will follow at Raleigh Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends Friday, Aug. 24, at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home in Cary from 6-8 p.m.
