Hannah Cohen Beatrice

Hannah Cohen Beatrice, 86, beloved wife, mother, aunt and friend, died Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2007 at Bayview Nursing Home in Beaufort, S.C.

She leaves a husband, Anthony “Tony” Beatrice of Beaufort, S.C.; a daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Kirk Fuller of Cary; two granddaughters, Catherine Fuller of Raleigh and Alexandra Fuller of Cary; and a sister, Shirley Rudy of Rockville, Md. to cherish her memory.

Mrs. Beatrice was born in Savannah, Ga. May 18, 1921. She was the daughter of Louis and Helen Cohen of Beaufort, S.C. Hannah owned and operated "Hannah's Beauty Salon" early in her career, at a time when female business owners and entrepreneurs were few in number.

She later met and married Tony Beatrice, USMC, and exchanged her life of color, cuts and perms for that of a military wife and mother. Following subsequent military postings, the family returned to Beaufort, S.C. During their stay in Oahu, Hawaii, however, Hannah discovered that she had artistic talent in cake decorating. From her return to Beaufort, S.C. in 1962 until 2000, Hannah created special-occasion and wedding cakes for clients throughout the Southeast. Each customer would become a special friend and she often designed cakes for multiple generations of the same family. She became known as "The Cake Lady of Beaufort" and Tony, upon his retirement, became her invaluable assistant. On May 13, 2007, she and Tony celebrate their 59th wedding anniversary; a more devoted couple would be impossible to find.

Visitation was at Copeland Funeral Home in Beaufort, S.C. Wednesday, Aug. 8. Graveside funeral services were held Thursday, Aug. 9 at the Beaufort National Cemetery. The family received guests after the service at Beth Israel Synagogue in Beaufort, S.C.

Donations may be made to Friends of Caroline Hospice, 1110 13th St., Port Royal, SC or to Beth Israel Synagogue, 304 Scotts St., Beaufort, SC 29902.

David Charles Kettler

David Charles Kettler, 51, died Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2007 at Duke University Medical Center. His strength and courage in the face of catastrophic health events will live on as an example to all who knew him.

He was born in Clinton, Iowa on April 29, 1956 to Ruth Mae (Raun) and Harvey Eugene Kettler who have both preceded him in death and welcomed him into heaven that morning.

Dave prided himself on his ability to balance his life, keeping his priorities straight in faith, family and career. His joy was providing for and loving his family, participating in all facets of his son’s lives and maintaining long-term and deep relationships with friends near and far. His pragmatic style of intellect, sprinkled with his keen sense of humor made any conversation with Dave a memorable event. He was respected professionally and personally for his genuine, no frills approach to life.

Surviving to cherish his memory are his wife of 28 years, Desirée (Sinchak) and their two sons, Ryan David (23) and Paul Michael (17). Dave’s final gift to them was to make sure that Desirée understood she was the best thing that had ever happened to him in his life and that Ryan and Paul understood they were his best two achievements. Unbearably heartbroken are Dave’s three older brothers, one stepsister and their families: Larry and Carolyn of Vinton, Iowa with son Ben and grandson Tate, son Seth and wife Chelsea, and daughter Jessica; Rich and Jonelle of Clinton, Iowa and their son Matthew at the U.S. Air Force Academy; Bob and Julie of Fulton, Ill. and their daughters DeAnna and Alison; Paula and Steve Pearson of Clinton, Iowa and their sons Nick and Spenser and daughter Ashley.

Equally heartbroken is Desirée’s family: father Raymond J. Sinchak of Joliet, Ill. who was Dave’s father in the absence of his own; brother Raymond of Shorewood, Ill.; sister Deidre of Joliet, Ill. and her beau Matt Rafferty; sister Dina and husband Nathan Yuma of Redmond, Ore. with their precious baby Spencer. Dave also leaves behind many aunts, uncles, cousins and innumerable dear friends. We will all miss his always available smile and hearty laugh.

Dave graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from Iowa State University in 1979. He was a mechanical engineer by degree, but more importantly by nature. His propensity to bring together people, gather data and problem solve fostered a career full of opportunity and challenge at Caterpillar Inc.

The first half of his career was spent working at several of the Caterpillar facilities in and around Peoria, Ill. primarily in the Transmission Business Unit. He began in 1977 as a college co-op and moved to test engineer, design engineer and eventually supervising engineer.

Those years in the test lab combined with his design knowledge and patents made his transition to engineering supervisor a natural move.

All of those work experiences created a rich base from which to build the second half of his career. Dave welcomed the challenge to broaden his career experience further when he accepted the position as plant manager of TBU’s facility in Leland in 1995. He then became a TBU engineering supervisor onsite for the Building Construction Products Division in Clayton in 1997. While in Clayton, he was offered and accepted a move into BCP as their 6 Sigma Deployment Champion while maintaining some work as a continuous-process-improvement Manager. He loved his job and formed many great relationships with colleagues that he missed dearly during his years of illness.

The family would like to express their deep appreciation to the many physicians, nurses, respiratory and physical therapists who have helped Dave recover from each of his many battles at Duke University Medical Center since November, 2004. Most recently, a special thanks to the pulmonary step-down unit and the medical intensive care unit for their compassion and understanding. In his final days, physicians and nurses who cared for Dave over the years came to his ICU room to share with Dave how his journey had touched them. His example of strength and courage changed them in such a way they felt they were better physicians and nurses and they thanked him for the privilege of providing care to him and his family.

The family will remember Dave’s life with friends and family from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 12 at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 200 S.E. Maynard Road in Cary. A funeral mass to celebrate Dave’s new perfect, permanent life will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 13 at St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church, 804 High House Road in Cary.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The American Red Cross, Triangle Area Chapter, 100 N. Peartree Lane, Raleigh, NC 27610, trianglearc.org, 231-1602.

Instead of sympathy cards, Desirée would prefer a favorite memory of Dave be written and mailed or sent via e-mail (mem.com) to be collected into an album for the family.
