Betty Lee Conley

Betty Lee Conley, age 76, died unexpectedly yet peacefully on Saturday, Jan. 26, 2008. Whether you knew her as Betty or Lee, you can take comfort in knowing that she is now walking with the Lord. Born Aug. 7, 1931 in Morgantown, WV, she was the eldest child of the late Allen McLain and Dorothea McLain.

Conley was a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of West Virginia University where she earned her B.A. and M.S. degrees. She went on to earn another master’s degree at the University of Pennsylvania and an Ed.D. from Rutgers University.

While playing french horn in the concert band at West Virginia University, Betty Lee McLain met the young engineer who would become her husband. It was 1949, the first year women were allowed in the concert band.

She and the late Eugene Walter Conley were married in 1953 and he doted on her until his death in 1988.

Surely she is spending her time with him now, telling him all about their sweet grandbabies whom she loved so very much. She spent the years since his death moving to Cary, Florida, Charlotte, Raleigh, and back to Cary. Three years ago she moved to her 28th house in 54 years and, within the last year, started to say that her little condominium in Cary Park might just be her last place. It was the perfect spot for daily walks and close enough to her newest grandchildren for weekly visits. Leave it to Betty Lee Conley to figure out how to be right about not moving again; yet, as if she were never meant to stay in one place for too long, move one final time to her true home.

She is survived by her son Blake Conley of New Jersey, her son Gregg Conley and his wife Violet of San Diego, her daughter Alicia Gordon and her husband Tom of Cary, grandchildren Triana and Parker Conley of San Diego, and grandchildren Malcolm and Archie Gordon of Cary, her sister Sally Ann McLain, her sister Mary Lou Lawrence, her sister Nancy Hague, her sister Sherry Mattozzi, her brother Allen McLain, her brother William McLain; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brother Thomas McLain.

A graveside memorial service will be held in San Diego at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Peace Presbyterian Church, 1777 West Chatham Street, Cary, NC, 27513 for the support of the church library or to the Cary Community Choir, 100 Swiss Stone Court, Cary NC, 27513 with whom she enjoyed singing Messiah each year.

Condolences may be sent to the family at Apex Funeral Home.
