Billy Gene Crouse

Billy G. Crouse, 73, died Sunday, March 1, 2009 from esophageal cancer. Crouse was born April 17, 1935 in West Union, WV to John W. Jett and Vivian M. Crouse. He served his country 10 years in the US Air Force. He worked for the town of Salina, NY for 12 years and was a well-known country music musician in the Syracuse area.

After relocating to Cary, Crouse became known as a painter of custom homes. He was a loving and caring husband, brother, father, grandfather, uncle and friend. He will be missed by all who knew him.

He is survived by his wife, Sandra Crouse of Cary, his sister Karen Lynn Monroe of Cary, his niece Pamela Monroe McShea and her husband Trent McShea and their son Brenden McShea of Manchester, NH, and his children Charles Crouse and his wife Kim of Clay, NY, Aaron Crouse and his wife Lisa of Cicero, NY, Terri Bivens of Culleoka, TN, David Crouse of Syracuse, NY, Billie Jeanne Crouse of Port St. Lucie, FL. He is also survived by grandchildren Chelsea and Miles Crouse of Clay, NY, Robert and Kenneth Bivens of Culleoka, TN, and Alexandria Crouse of Cicero, NY.

Crouse was preceded in death by his mother and father, Vivian Crouse Monroe and John Wiley Jett.

Dewey Melvin Poole

Dewey Melvin Poole, 91, of 120 Cedar Lane Farm Rd. in New Hill, went home to be with his Lord on Friday Feb. 20, 2009. Poole was a carpenter by profession with some of his latter works including the construction of the Harris Nuclear Plant in New Hill. He was a devoted husband and loving father. Poole was and is an example of how to live, to love and to laugh. We can honor him in our remembrance of him.

A service celebrating his life and home going will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday Feb. 23 in the Olive Chapel Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Rev. Dennis Long and Rev. Greg Fisher will conduct the services.

Surviving are his wife of 67 years, Pauline Blalock Poole, three sons: Johnnie T. Poole and his wife Jeanette of Greenville, Wilbur M. Poole and his wife Linda of Milano, TX, and Daniel M. Poole and his wife Jane of Fuquay-Varina; daughter Sarah Ennis of Tampa, FL, 10grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, and one great great grandchild.. Also surviving are a sister, Myra Poole White of South Carolina, and two sons-in-law: Jimmy Melton of Boone and Marshall Honeycutt of Garner. Poole was preceded in death by two daughters: Phyllis Melton of Boone, and Annie Honeycutt of Garner.

Pooleʼs family received friends on Sunday Feb. 22 at the Apex Funeral Home.

Nancy Fogleman Jones

Nancy Fogleman Jones, 71, passed away on Saturday, Feb. 28, 2009 surrounded by her loving family. Jones lived in Apex and was a member of Swift Creek Baptist Church. For 40 years of her life she was a dedicated nurse at Western Wake Hospital, in Cary. For 49 years, Jones was also a loving and caring wife to her husband, William C. Jones, who survives her.

She is also survived by her son Ryan Jones and his wife Becky of Apex, grandchildren Nathan and Bailey Jones, and brother Martin A. Fogleman of Liberty.

The family will receive friends at Apex Funeral Home, 550 W. Williams St Apex, NC on Monday, March 2 from 6 to 8 PM. A service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 3 at the Swift Creek Baptist. A burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Ben Leslie Bowen Jr.

Ben Leslie Bowen Jr, 72, of Apex went to be with his Lord and Savior on Saturday, Feb. 28, 2009 holding the hands of his loving wife and daughter. He fought a courageous battle with cancer. Bowen, a native of Cleveland County, was born to Ben Bowen and Ethel Blalock Bowen on Oct. 31, 1936.

He is survived by his wife, Sybil H. Bowen. He is also survived by daughter Ashley Dee-Ann Bowen of Apex, son Ben Leslie Bowen III of Clover, SC, granddaughter Alisha Bowen of Clover, SC, sister Janet Pratt of Fernandina Beach, FL and brother Marshall Bowen and his wife Dot of Cherryville.

He is also survived by several nieces, nephews, and his faithful companion and cat Walker.

The family will receive friends from 10-11 a.m. Wednesday, March 4 at Olive Chapel Baptist Church, 600 New Hill - Olive Chapel Rd, Apex and at all other times at their home. A funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the church sanctuary. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Those considering memorial contributions may make them to Hospice of Wake County, 1300 St. Mary's St., Suite 300, Raleigh, NC 27605-1276, or to Olive Chapel Baptist Church Building Fund, 600 New Hill - Olive Chapel Rd, Apex, NC 27502.

Rose Catherine Govan

On Feb. 27, 2009 at the age of 72, surrounded by her loving family, Rose Catherine Govan peacefully left her home on earth and went to be with her Lord and Savior and reunited with her beloved husband Col. Robert A, Govan.

Born in Fulton County in Atlanta, Ga., Govan was devoted mother, grandmother and friend. She was a person who touched so many peoples’ lives. She had a unique gift to make you feel good in every conversation. She loved art, enjoyed traveling and going to the beach.

A funeral mass will be held on Monday, March 2 at 10 a.m. at St. Michaels Archangel Church, 804 High House Road, Cary.

She was a member of St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church in Apex. She was a member of the Red Hat Society, a Wake Inter-Faith volunteer, and a member of St. Michael small Christian community. She was a graduate of American University and a member of Kappa Alpha Beta sorority.

She was preceded in death by her husband Col. Robert A. Govan, her father George Turner, mother Mary Turner and brother Paul Turner.

Govan is survived by brother David Turner, six children, 17 grandchildren and one great grand child, including: daughter Debra and Steve Nagy with children Lauren, Lindsay and Corey; daughter Merry and Mike Wunderlich with children Bryan and Amanda Sutton and great-grandchild Kenton; son Robert and Liza Govan with children Blake, Paige, and RJ; daughter Jeni and Glen Michie with children Joanna, Allie, Scott and Brian; daughter Liz and Greg Callis with children Bob and Kaytea and daughter Mindy Govan and Kelly Jackson with children Nikolas, Catherine and Logan.

She is also survived by her long-time friends Father Jim Balint, Pat Lawrence, Mary Ellen Anderson and Carl Anderson.

Lorene Millsap Sorrell

Lorene Millsap Sorrell, 71 of Apex, died Sunday, March 1, 2009 in Wake Med Cary surrounded by her loving family. Sorrell was born on March 16, 1937 in Robbinsville in Graham County.

Sorrell is survived by her husband, Curtis Sorrell, son, Haywood Joe Mills and his wife Vicki of Apex, son James Hugh Mills and his wife Susan of Apex, daughter Margaret Sechrist and her husband Jesse of Sanford, daughter Helen Ann Mills of Apex, brother Frank Millsap and his wife Betty of GA, brother Vann Millsap and his wife Dottie of Robbinsville, 11 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.

The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Friday, March 6 at Apex Funeral Home, 550 W. Williams St. (Hwy 55), Apex.

There will be a funeral service held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 7 in the Chapel of Apex Funeral Home conducted by Rev. Mike Cecil. Burial will follow in Olive Chapel Baptist Church Cemetery.

Louise Valley Jacobs Ragan

Louise Valley Jacobs Ragan, 91, died on March 3, 2009 at UNC Memorial Hospital.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Floyd Wilkerson Ragan and her parents, Loffie and Lyda Jacobs.

Ragan was a very active native of Chatham County. She was a member of Olive Chapel Baptist Church and, along with her husband, served in the Intermediate Department. She participated in the prayer chain calling committee and many other church functions. Barbeque fundraisers were one of her favorite church activities.

For many years, she enjoyed being a member of the North Carolina Grange.

The Bells School cafeteria was one of her earliest places of employment. In later years, she worked at Apex Nurseries and Jean’s Berry Patch. She found her niche in making, sharing and selling her special strawberry bread.

One of her favorite outings was driving herself to Bojangles where she enjoyed breakfast and visiting with her friends who had developed the same routine.

Ragan is survived by her two daughters and their families, Jean and Ronald Copeland, and Brenda and Gary Haithcock. She was “Granny” to Karen Copeland, Will Copeland and his wife Lisa, Derek Haithcock of Oakland, Cal., and Lauren Haithcock of Raleigh. “G.G.” was especially proud of her great grandchildren, Ragan and Holly Copeland.

The family will receive friends 6–8 p.m. on Thursday, March 5, at Apex Funeral Home and other times at the home of Brenda and Gary Haithcock, 540 Green level Road West, Apex, NC.

A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday March 6, at Olive Chapel Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

All expressions of kindness are appreciated. Contributions honoring Louise and her active and loving lifestyle may be sent to Olive Chapel Baptist Church. Please designate either the Olive Chapel Building Fund or the Maggie Bell Handbell Choir.

Blanche Susan Loots

Blanche Susan Loots was born Nov. 16, 1916 in Peoria, Illinois to Roy and Maude Oberbillig. She married Ralph Charles Loots May 27, 1939 in Chicago, Illinois. She is survived by her four children: Lynne Loots and Wayne Loots (Carol) of Car; Wendy Loots of Sonoma, CA; and Diana Gams (Mark) of Waukesha, WI and by four grandchildren: Heather Williams (Chad) of Willow Springs; Eric Loots (Megan) of Cary, and Kevin Gams and Laura Gams of Waukesha, WI and by two great-grandchildren: Maryn and Ella Rose Williams, plus a considerable, extended family.

For more than 50 years Blanche lived in Oshkosh, WI. She enjoyed extensive travel, golf, boating, outdoor adventures with her husband and playing bridge with her many friends. She worked with the Winnebagoland Council of Camp Fire Girls, including as director of Camp Okanabi, volunteered in her church, and was a Red Cross volunteer for 25 years.

While living in Cary with her daughter, she enjoyed the activities of the Total Life Center at Bond Park. In lieu of flowers memorial gifts for Blanche may be sent to the Total Life Center, 110 Maury O’Dell Place, Cary, NC 27513. Or just give some time to a friend in need.
