Thomas S. Laverty
A Memorial Service for Thomas S. Laverty, 57, Fargo, ND, was held on Saturday, February 26, 2006 in Boulger Funeral Home. Mr. Laverty died Tuesday, February 22, 2005 in his home.
Thomas S. Laverty was born on July 24, 1947 in the Bronx, NY. He moved to the area in the spring of 2001 after reading an article in Time magazine about Fargo.
Tom served in the US Marine Corps from January 1968 to 1971 when he received an honorable discharge. He was in Combat in Vietnam from July 1968 through November 1969. Tom was a Purple Heart recipient and earned the Combat Action Ribbon. He was a member of the VVA for fourteen years. He belonged to the Queens Chapter 32 in New York then transferred to North Dakota Chapter 374 three years ago. Tom was the Chairman of Operation Holidays for the past three years. Tom was very active in fundraising. He raised thousands of dollars for Operation Holidays and Mikie’s Place, a playground dedicated to the memory of Mikie Jones-Schreder, located at the School for the Blind in Grand Forks. He was also very active with the Amvet and Veterans affairs.
Interment at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Fargo.

Irene Hempler
Funeral services for Irene Hempler, 76, West Fargo, ND, were held on Tuesday, March 1, 2005 at the St. John’s Lutheran Church, Oakes. Reverend Patrick O’Brien and Reverend Clark Jahnke officiated. Mrs. Hempler died Saturday, February 26, 2005 at Innovis Health, Fargo.
Irene Schock, daughter of William and Caroline (Riley) Schock was born on October 22, 1928 in Wishek. The family moved to the Verona, ND area where Irene attended rural school at Cleveland.
On January 2, 1949, she married Harry Hempler in Verona. The couple farmed near Crete, ND until 1956, when they moved into Oakes. Irene worked for the Oakes Good Samaritan Center. In 1976, Irene and Harry moved to Wahpeton and Irene worked at the North Dakota State School of Science in the food department. In 1986, Harry retired from Ottertail and the couple moved to West Fargo. Irene retired from the West Fargo School System in 1995, where she had worked in the cafeteria.
She is survived by her husband, Harry, West Fargo; two sons, Larry (Mary Ann), Farmington, MN, Tom (Yvonne), Melbourne, FL; three grandchildren; one great-grandchild; one brother, Fred (Janet) Schock, Columbus, MT; four sisters, Florence Gemar, Oakes, Esther Rufsvold, Lisbon, Ruth (Robert) Gyldenvand, Fargo and Gladys (Zack) Schockman. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Lynette Gross, one granddaughter, Amy Marie Hempler and her parents.
Pallbearers for the funeral were Eric Hempler, Brian Schmitz, Jason Neuharth, Adam Hempler, Gary Molstad and Fred Schock.
Music was provided by organist Donna Cline.
Interment at Oakes View Cemetery, near Oakes.
Dahlstrom Funeral Home, Oakes, was in charge of arrangements.

John G. Kron
Funeral services for John G. Kron, 69, Enderlin, ND, were held on Monday, February 28, 2005 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Enderlin. Reverend Mike Toomey officiated. Mr. Kron died Thursday, February 24, 2005 at MeritCare Hospital, Fargo.
John G. Kron, son of Otto and Anna (Urich) Kron was born on November 3, 1935 in Romania. He attended school in Germany.
On March 12, 1961, he married Alice Brewer in Lisbon.John came to Lisbon in May of 1956. He worked for Arnold Schultz for a year. He worked for Huether Farms for one year. In 1959 he started working for Case in Enderlin. From 1967-1978 he worked for Melroe Mfg. as a welder. He worked for Fraedrich Sanitation until retiring in October 1997.
He is survived by his wife, Alice, Enderlin; one son, John, Enderlin; one daughter, Gladys (Curt) Stibal, Lidgerwood; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and sister, Matilda (Leroy) Schempp, Oakes. He was preceded in death by a sister, Ella Rosebrook.
Pallbearers for the funeral were Nathan Kron, Dillon Kron, Josh Stibal, John Stibal, Kris Mark, Brian HIllyard, Jerry Schumacher and Leroy Bernstein. Honorary pallbearers were John Kron, Curt Stibal, Ron Arnt, Marvin Fink and Mike Martin
Music was provided by organist Joan Schlect and soloist Jack Armstrong.
Interment at Enderlin Cemetery, Enderlin.

Sister Helen Couture
Funeral services for Sister Helen Couture, SMP 85, Valley City, ND, were held on Thursday, March 3, 2005 at Maryvale Convent Chapel, Valley City. Sister Couture died Monday, February 28, 2005 at Maryvale Convent, Valley City.
Sister Helen Couture was born on October 31, 1919 at St. John, ND.
She professed her vows as a Sister of Mary of the Presentation on February 14, 1939 at Broons, France. She graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree from the College of Great Falls, MT in August 1960. For many years she was involved in the ministry of teaching in Catholic schools operated by the Sisters in Harvey, Olga, Willow City, Walhalla, Lisbon, Valley City, Oakwood, all in North Dakota as well as in Washington, IL. She taught home economics and did missionary work in the community’s missions in the Cameroons, Africa for three years. Sister Helen later studied and earned LPN certification, cared for our elderly Sisters in Spring Valley, IL and worked as an LPN in St. Andrew’s Nursing Home in Bottineau, ND, later also serving as a volunteer there. Sister Helen retired at Maryvale in 1994.
She is survived by her community, the Sisters of Mary of the Presentation, two sisters, Mary Dion and Luella Schafer, both of Devils Lake, ND and nieces and nephews.

Winona Larghe
Winona “Nonie” Larghe, 49 died February 23, 2005 at her home in Lisbon, ND.
Services were held Tuesday, March 1, 2005 at the Church of the Ascension, Bismarck, with the Reverend Marvin Klemmer officiating. Burial will be held at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Bismarck.
Winona was born March 10, 1956, the daughter of Edwin and Eunice (Hayes) Savenko. She was raised and educated in Moffit and Hazelton until her family moved to Bismarck in 1972, where she graduated from Bismarck High School. She worked at Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center and was later employed in Wilton caring for an elderly woman. Nonie moved to Lisbon in August of 2004, where she was employed at the North Dakota Veteran’s Home in the dietary department.
Nonie is survived by her daughter, LaDonna (Chad) Wharton, Lisbon; grandsons, Kristopher and Jaren Wharton, also of Lisbon; her mother, Eunice Savenko and two sisters, Carlyn Wentz and LeeAnne Giesen, all of Bismarck, ND; two brothers, Michael Savenko, IL and Darin Savenko, CO; her grandmother, Katherine Hayes, Bismarck and many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her father, Edwin Savenko, her grandfather, Arthur Hayes and her grandmother, Antonio Hoffstad.
Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck was in charge of arrangements.

Phyllis M. Mangin
Funeral services for Phyllis M. Mangin, 76, Verona, ND, were held on Monday, April 4, 2005 at the St. Raphael’s Catholic Church, Verona. Celebrant for the Mass was Father Mathew Pamplaniyil and con-celebrant was Father Adam Hasey. Mrs. Mangin died Thursday, March 31, 2005 at MeritCare Hospital, Fargo.
Phyllis Mae Romsdal, daughter of Phyllis and Julia (Larson Morse) Romsdal was born on August 3, 1928 in Glover, ND, where she grew up and attended school. She graduated from Oakes High School, Oakes with the class of 1946. She then taught school for one year.
On July 1, 1947, she married Milton D. Mangin in Oakes. The couple made their home and farmed in the Glover area until 1949, when they moved to their present farm near Verona, continuing to farm until 1956. Through the years, Phyllis worked for the Oakes Cafe and also managed the Verona Cafe. Milton died on December 10, 1999. Phyllis continued to live on the farm with her son and daughter-in-law until the time of her death. For many years, she wrote the Verona News column in the Oakes Times, LaMoure chronicle and Ransom County Gazette newspapers. She was an active member of the St. Raphael’s Catholic Church. Phyllis was a member of the Jones-Benoit Legion Auxiliary and was also a Gold Star Mother.
She is survived by one son, Marvin (Marge), Verona; one granddaughter; and one brother, Charles Romsdal, Moorhead, MN. She was preceded in death by her husband, one son, Marcus, her parents, two brothers and two sisters.
Pallbearers for the funeral were Steve Frojen, Dave Peterson, Dan Podoll, David Podoll, Lewis Holub and Greg Eull.
Music was provided by organist Eileen Geske and soloist Lonny Bleese.
Interment at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Cemetery, near Verona.

Leroy A. Zwetzig
Funeral services for Leroy A. Zwetzig, 63, Lisbon, ND, were held on Tuesday, April 5, 2005 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Lisbon. Reverend Norman Anderson and Reverend David Killeen officiated. Mr. Zwetzig died Wednesday, March 30, 2005 at home in Lisbon.
Leroy A. Zwetzig, son of Aleck and Evelyn (Olson) Zwetzig was born on June 4, 1941 in Lisbon. He attended Lisbon School.
Mr. Zwetzig worked on various farms in the Midwest. He retired in 1993.
He is survived by his mother, Evelyn Zwetzig, Lisbon; and siblings, Marvin Minneapolis, Terry (Jane) Asp, Murrieta, CA, Lorraine Kamrath, Lisbon, Linda (Kenneth) Gudmunson, Casselton and Norma Ann (James) Krabbenhoft, Fargo.
Pallbearers for the funeral were David Hoff, Bernie Nordhagen, John Feist, Corey Meyers, Ed McDonald and Gordon Madland.
Music was provided by organist Jan Hansen and soloist Joan Montgomery.
Interment at Oakwood Cemetery, Lisbon.

Gunder P. Stenerson
Funeral services for Gunder P. Stenerson, 72, Fargo, ND, were held on Monday, April 4, 2005 at Lutheran Church of the Cross, West Fargo. Mr. Stenerson died Thursday, March 31, 2005 at MeritCare Hospital, Fargo.
Gunder Peter Stenerson, son of Peter and Cora (Kjesbo) was born on October 18, 1932 in Halstad, MN. He was baptized and confirmed in Halstad. He attended Herberg rural grade school in North Dakota and graduated from high school in Halstad, in 1950.
On September 5, 1953, he married Nola Nordby of Ada, MN. They moved to Halstad where he worked for the City of Halstad and later McLaughlin Chevrolet as a salesman. While in Halstad, he volunteered with the first ambulance crew and the Halstad Fire Department and was a charter member of the Jaycees. In 1965, they moved to Hillsboro, where he managed Rent or Buy, a farm equipment store and later J.I. Case company stores in Hillsboro, Fargo, Grand Forks, and Aledo, IL. He later worked for Valley Equipment in Hillsboro. While in Hillsboro, he served on the city council. Upon retirement they moved to Fargo. He was a member of Lutheran Church of the Cross.
He is survived by his wife, Nola, Fargo; three sons, Michael, Cummings, ND, James (Tracy), Fargo and Steve (Stacy), Fargo; one daughter, Cynthia (Tom) Kritzberger, Beulah; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one brother, Dale (Carol) Stenerson; Fargo and two sisters, Janice Habedank, Twin Valley, MN and Phyllis (Orville) Johnson, Lisbon. He was preceded in death by his parents, Peter and Cora, his son, Randall, granddaughter, Jessica Stenerson and grandson, Joshua Stenerson.
Interment at Halstad North Cemetery, Halstad.
