Byron R. Burtness

Byron R. Burtness, 88, Ashley, ND, formerly Walcott, ND, died Sunday, June 26, 2005, at the Ashley Nursing Home. Funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, July 1, at the Vertin-Munson Funeral Home, Wahpeton, ND. Visitation will be held on Friday one hour before the service. Interment will be held at Walcott Lutheran Cemetery, Walcott.

Byron was born to E.O. and Emma (Hansen) Burtness on March 30, 1917, at Walcott, North Dakota. At the age of 2, Byron came down with scarlet fever and became deaf. He attended the school for the deaf at Devils Lake for 14 years (1924-1938). He lived in Jamestown, ND, for a couple of years before moving to Ashley Nursing Home, where he has lived for the past 25 years.

He will be sincerely missed by his Ashley Medical Center family. In the past, Byron enjoyed playing sports, and watching baseball on TV. He was an avid reader who enjoyed the National Geographic magazines. Byron also delivered mail to the residents of the Ashley Medical Center for many years. He looked forward to the home area paper to catch up on news. Byron also enjoyed playing Bingo, cards, pets, and the outdoors. He won numerous medals at the Senior Olympics where he participated in various events. Byron was known for his fondness of food. He always enjoyed trips to the Ashley Senior Center for German meals. Waiting for goodies from his friends and staff at the Ashley Medical Center was a typical activity for Byron. He will be missed by his special friends, Inez and Herbert Arnold, who accompanied him on holidays and special occasions. They always made Byron feel special.

He is survived by nephews and nieces.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Mae Haverland and Mildred Bakko; and 2 brothers, Wendell and Earl Burtness.

Kenneth Dockter

A burial committal service for Kenneth Wylie Dockter, 70, of Arlington VA, will be held Monday April 11, 2005, 11 a.m., at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, VA. Burial with full military honors will be in the Columbarium at Arlington Cemetery. Those attending should be at the Arlington Administration Building by 10:30 a.m. The Murphy Funeral Home, Arlington, VA, is assisting the family.

Mr. Dockter died Dec. 31, 2004, at Woodbine Home, Alexandria, VA. Kenneth Wylie Dockter was born July 14, 1934, to Julius Otto and Florence Elizabeth (Wylie) Dockter at Linton, ND. He was baptized on August 6, 1942, and confirmed in 1947 at Zion Lutheran Church, Ashley, ND.

He attended Ashley Public School and graduated his senior year from Ellendale High School while also attending Ellendale State Normal and Industrial College. Ken was active in high school/college sports with 11 letters-football, basketball, baseball, etc. He was very active in and with the Boy Scout organization. He enjoyed Dakota duck and pheasant hunting. Ken taught swimming and was a lifeguard at Ashley’s Lake Hoskins and later on continued swimming every day at the pool in Crystal City, VA.

Ken served in the Korean War as Communications Instructor and NCO Administrator and was honorably discharged in 1955 from the U.S. Army. He was a member of the American Legion and Korean War Veterans, the last known survivor of the #240-969 FAB. Also, Ken was an active supporter and contributor to the Korean War Memorial and World War II Memorial in Washington DC.

He then went on to graduate from North Dakota State University, Fargo, ND with a bachelor of science degree in chemistry (1958), a master of science in biochemistry (1960), and worked toward a Ph.D., in immunochemistry.

As a chemist, biochemist, head of research and development, management, marketing, Ken worked with the USDA/ARS, Mead Johnson Research, Melpar, Midwest Research, Upsher Labs, Chemical Abstracts Service, IIT Research, CRCS and many others.

At the time of his death, he was employed with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in Arlington, VA. with 20+ years of service. He was a member of the National Capital chapter of the American Chemical Society and many other work-related organizations and had published over 300 articles on various technical and management topics.

Survivors include his son, Ron Dockter, wife Diane, and grandson James of Murrell’s Inlet, SC.; his daughter Gretchen Hancock, husband Derrick, and granddaughter Caroline of Liberty Township, OH.; and sister Dorothy Weaver and husband James of Kalispell, MT, as well as many cousins, nephews, nieces.

His parents and brother, Ted, preceded him in death.

We will miss Ken. He was a private, kind and gentle person, generous and caring, a mentor to many. His smile and greetings, along with the humorous stories he liked to tell, entertained us all. Ken was proud of his country and the armed forces he served in. He loved his profession and was committed to progress. He was a prince. He was a dear person. He loved his family and was so proud of them all.

A Memorial Foundation has been established at North Dakota State University in the name of Kenneth W. Dockter. Address: NDSU Development Foundation, 1241 N. University Drive, P.O. Box 5144, Fargo, ND 58105-5144.

Emma Daly

Emma Lynette Daly, 97, of Long Beach, CA, and formerly of Ashley and Ellendale, ND, died Saturday, Nov. 20, 2004, at Long Beach Memorial Hospital.

Private memorial and burial services were held Nov. 26 in California.

Emma Spitzer was born Jan. 10, 1907, near Ashley, ND, to Christian and Christina (Nitschke) Spitzer. She graduated from high school in Ashley and college in Ellendale and then taught in various country and elementary schools in North Dakota. In the early 1940s both Emma and her twin sister, Elsye, were teachers in the Bismarck Public School System. Together they moved to Los Angeles in 1944 and continued their education and their teaching careers in California.

In 1954, Emma married Bernard Daley, and in 1972, she retired after more than 45 years of teaching. She and her husband continued living in California until his death in 1987. She then moved back to North Dakota for five years before returning to California to live with her nephew Jim Calhoun.

Emma is survived by one brother H.H. (Bertha) Spitzer of Bismarck, ND, one nephew and four nieces. She was preceded in death by her husband, Barney, her parents, two brothers, three sisters, two nephews and one niece

Clifford Knapp

Ashley, ND-Funeral service for Clifford Knapp, 78, of Ashley will be Friday, August 6, 2004, at 10 a.m. at Lehr Seventh-Day Adventist Church at Lehr, ND. Pastor Ken Lytle will officiate.

Burial will be in the Kulm Seventh-Day Adventist Cemetery at 1:30 p.m.

Visitation will be Thursday, August 5 from 5-7 p.m. at the funeral home and for one hour prior to the service at the church.

He died Friday, July 30, 2004, after a prolonged illness at the Ashley Nursing Home.

Clifford Knapp, son of Nathaniel and Hannah (Remphert) Knopp was born October 18, 1925, near Forbes, ND. He attended country school through the eighth grade. He worked on the family farm with his father.

He was united in marriage to Lillian P. Cherney on July 27, 1947, at Edgeley, ND. They made their home on the family farm until 1949 when they moved to Ellendale where he worked for Thorpe Chevrolet garage until 1953. They then moved to West Palm Beach, FL, and made their home there for 14 years. In 1967, they moved to Ashley where he worked various jobs including at Heitzmann Furniture, a bus driver for the Ashley Public School and he owned his own photography business and television repair shop. He also worked for Freddie Frisch Construction and at the time of his retirement, he was employed with McIntosh County.

Clifford was an avid musician and played in many bands in various towns. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, metal detecting, traveling and spending time with his many friends and family. He had a wonderful sense of humor and will be greatly missed by his family.

He was a member of Lehr Seventh-Day Adventist Church.

Survivors include his wife of Ashley, three daughters, Bonnie (Ronald) Rabine of Ellendale and Brenda Knapp and Stacy (Justin) Jenner, both of Fargo, two sisters, Linda (Marvin) Roloff of Bismarck and Jean Zachrison of Jamestown, two grandchildren, Samuel (Connie) Haase and Melissa (Mike) Bock and five great-grandchildren.

His parents preceded him in death.

Honorary Casketbearers will be Samuel Haase, Melissa Bock, Justin Bock, Joshua Bock, James Bock, Crysta Haase and Matthew Haase.

Casketbearers will be Phillip Cherney, Robert Haase, Ivan Gilmore, Floyd Tschetter, Albert Schumacher, Leroy Schweigert,Cory Zachrison and Marty Zachrison.

The eulogist will be Donald Roloff. The pianist will be Jolene Engelhart, and there will be a duet by Jolene Engelhart and Coreen Schumacher.

Carlsen Funeral Home of Ashley have been entrusted with the arrangements.

Esther Woehl

Esther Woehl, age 73, of Lodi, CA, passed away at a hospital there Monday, July 19, 2004.

The funeral was Thursday, July 22, 2004. Esther was born Aug. 22, 1930, in Venturia, ND. She moved to Lodi in 1958.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law Mark and Louise Woehl, Lodi, a daughter and son-in-law, Debbie and Tom Newhall, Lodi, three grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and one brother, Edward Golz of Ashley.

Four brothers and four sisters preceded her in death.

Pauline Diegel

Ashley, ND - Funeral service for Pauline Diegel, 91, of Ashley was Thursday, July 8, 2004, at 2:30 p.m. at Ashley Baptist Church. The Rev. Darvin Stahl officiated.

Burial was in the Ashley City Cemetery.

Pauline Haas, daughter of Daniel and Margaretha (Schauer) Haas was born July 17, 1912, north of Zeeland, ND, on her family homestead. She grew up and attended country school. She worked on the family farm.

Pauline was united in marriage to Henry Heupel Oct. 24, 1937, near Wishek, ND, in the Evangelical United Brethren Church. They farmed in McIntosh County, and in 1944 they moved into Ashley. Mr. Heupel died Feb. 17, 1966. In the summer of 1966, she moved to Bismarck and worked in housekeeping at the Bismarck Baptist Home. In 1968, she returned to Ashley and did babysitting for her grandchildren.

She was then united in marriage to Christ Diegel on April 11, 1969, at the Ashley Baptist Church. They made their home in Ashley. Mr. Diegel died Oct. 17, 1995. She continued to make Ashley her home. She entered the Ashley Nursing Home on December 1, 2003.

Pauline enjoyed piano playing, sewing, gardening and singing in the church choir.

She was a member of Ashley Baptist Church and the Ashley Baptist Church Ladies Aide.

Survivors include two daughters, Shirley (Don) Dockter of Ashley and Deloris Heupel of Bismarck, one son, Vern (Vangie) Heupel of Milbank, SD, two sisters, Edna Bolden of Aurora, IL, and Ida Rueb of Gridley, CA, four grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren.

Her parents, both husbands, three sisters, four brothers, two half sisters, two half brothers and one granddaughter preceded her in death.

Honorary casketbearers were Paige Dockter, Drew Dockter, Jesse Piatz, Amber Piatz and Faith Dockter.

Casketbearers were Todd Dockter, Jon Dockter, Jason Dockter, Mary Heupel, Jami Dockter and Chase Dockter.

The organist was Ruth Jenner, and there was a duet by Vernon Jenner and Rev. Darwin Stahl.

Carlsen Funeral Home of Ashley was in charge of arrangements.
