Mabel L. Miller

April 5, 1919-Oct. 13, 2006

Mabel L. Miller, 87, Cando, ND died Friday, October 13, 2006 at Towner County Medical Center of Cando.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Oct. 18 at 2 PM at the United Methodist Church in Cando with interment in I.O.O.F. Cemetery, Cando. Visitation hours are Tuesday, October 17 from 2 PM until 8 PM at Dunnigan-Dix Funeral Home, Cando and for 1 hour before the funeral at the church on Wednesday.

Mabel Lilly Robertson was born On April 5, 1919 to Robert and Ethel (Montgomery) Robertson in Pillager, MN. She was raised in Cando and attended school at Cando Public School and earned her EGD from UND-Lake Region, Devils Lake, ND.

Mabel married Charles R. Miller on September 22, 1934 at Cando. Mabel was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She worked alongside her husband on their farm and remained abreast of the farming operations until her death. Mabel was a member of the United Methodist Church. She enjoyed doing stained glass and needlepoint and was also an avid gardener and painter.

Mabel is survived by her sons: Dr. C. Robert (Lois) Miller of Bottineau, ND and Henri (Babe) Miller of Cando; her daughters: Sharon and Patricia Miller, both of Cando and Suzanne (Ardell) Loken of Devils Lake, ND; her 17 grandchildren and 37 great-grandchildren; her sisters: Sadie Nelson of Cando; Gladys Cartwright and LaDonna Sherven, both of Coleman, MI; and Charlotte Crawford of Cottonwood, AZ and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, Charles, who passed away in August of 1975, she was preceded in death by her son, Dr. Douglas Miller, her parents, her brother, Thomas Robertson and her sisters: Harriet Jacobson, Violet Klingenberg and Nellie Gibbens. Mabel will be greatly missed by all.

Olga Moore

June 23, 1931-Oct. 4, 2006

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – Olga L. Moore, 75, formerly of Minot, died Wednesday, Oct. 4, 2006, in her daughter’s home in Cedar Rapids.

Olga Foster was born June 23, 1931, in Sacramento, Calif. She married Joseph Moore July 20, 1985, in Cedar Rapids.

Survivors: daughter, Kelli Simonsen, Cedar Rapids; son, James, Orofino, Idaho; three grandchildren.

There will be no service. Private burial will be in Arlington National Cemetery, Washington, D.C. (Turner West Funeral Home, Cedar Rapids)

James L. ‘Bud’ Carlson

March 12, 1927-Oct. 8, 2006

James L. “Bud” Carlson, 79, Kenmare, died Sunday, Oct. 8, 2006, of natural causes at a Kenmare assisted living center.

He was born on March 12, 1927, in rural Kandiyohi Township, Burke County, the son of Otto and Mabel (Hjort) Carlson. He attended Kandiyohi School No. 1 from grades one through eight and then Kenmare High School.

Bud entered the United States Army on Nov. 30, 1945, serving in Japan, where he received the Victory Medal and the Army of Occupation Medal. He was honorably discharged on Feb. 17, 1947. After his discharge, Bud returned to North Dakota and assisted his brother, Raymond, on the family farmstead for one year.

Bud went to work for Standard Oil in 1948, in Blaisdell. After one year in Blaisdell he transferred to Kenmare, where he owned and operated the Standard Oil Bulk Plant until he sold it in 1983.

He married Dorothy Peterson from Maddock in 1950. The couple had four children together.

Bud was a member of Faith Baptist Church, Kenmare, was a former member of the Kenmare Lions Club and he served on the Kenmare Park Board. He was active in Gideons International for many years, traveling to Africa and New York to hand out Bibles.

Bud’s relationship with Jesus Christ was foremost in his life. He loved to sing in the Good News Quartet and was very interested in Child Evangelism work. He was a very generous person and put the Lord and others first.

Survivors: wife of 55 years, Dorothy, Kenmare; son, James (Faye) Carlson, Kenmare; daughter, Carol (David) Tengesdal, Tioga; sister, Twila Enget, Kenmare; five grandchildren, Jessica, Melissa and Rebecca Carlson and Mark and Samuel Tengesdal; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two infant sons, Douglas and Jeffrey; and two brothers, Russell and Raymond Carlson.

Funeral service: Thursday, Oct. 12, 2006, at 2 p.m. at Faith Baptist Church, Kenmare.

Visitation: Today, Oct. 11, 2006, from 2 to 7 p.m. at the Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Kenmare, and one hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday.

Burial: Lakeview Cemetery, Kenmare.

In lieu of flowers the family prefers memorials to Child Evangelical Fellowship, Faith Baptist Mission or Gideons International.

Kenneth Oberholtzer

May 9, 1921-Sept. 2, 2006

MOHALL - Kenneth D. Oberholtzer, 85, Coronado, Calif., formerly of Mohall, died Saturday, Sept. 2, 2006, in Chula Vista, Calif.

He was born May 9, 1921, to Lloyd and Nellie Oberholtzer in Beardsley, Minn. He married Emogene Wang in September 1950 in San Diego. He served 26 years in the Navy, including World War II in the Pacific theater and the Korean conflict.

He is survived by his wife.

Graveside service: Friday at 10 a.m. in Mohall Community Cemetery, Mohall.

Vernon Fredriksen

Dec. 23, 1929-Oct. 3, 2006

Vernon Lloyd Fredriksen, 76, Minot, died Tuesday, Oct. 3, 2006, at his home.

Vernon was born on Dec. 23, 1929, in Balfour, the son of Lloyd and Lola (Tannehill) Fredriksen. He was raised and educated in the Balfour and Minot areas and on Jan. 13, 1947, he joined the United States Army. Vernon was honorably discharged on June 18, 1948.

Vernon married Marion Moe of Foxholm on Nov. 11, 1949, in St. John’s Lutheran Church of Carpio. He was the father of three girls and three boys. Before his retirement, Vernon was employed as a truck driver where he especially enjoyed his time spent at Hart Motor Express and later Allied Van Lines in Minot.

Vernon loved keeping busy. He continually found projects around the house to occupy his time. He enjoyed his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, his dogs, fishing and hunting. At the time of his death, he was anxiously looking forward to the coming hunting season. Vernon was always busy planning hunting excursions with his sons and grandsons.

Survivors: wife, Marion, Minot; six children, Diane (Kevin) Synnott, Dickinson, David (Judy) Fredriksen, Dunseith, Jerry (Diane) Fredriksen, Carol (LaVerne) Malcomb, Sharon (Darrell) Van Winkle, all of Minot, and LaVern (Cindy) Fredriksen, Berthold; 16 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; mother, Lola Fredriksen, Minot; brother, Bob Fredriksen, Mesa, Ariz.; brother-in-law, Raymond (Ruth) Moe, Minot; sisters-in-law, Clarice Hubsky and Lois (Monty) Banna, both of Minot; aunt, Bernice Stengl, Bremerton, Wash.; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his father, Lloyd Fredriksen; brothers, Dale, Darrell and Dwayne Fredriksen; and sister, Fern Emmett.

Funeral service: Friday, Oct. 6, 2006, at 1 p.m. at the River of Life Assembly of God Church, Minot.

Visitation: Today, Oct. 5, 2006, from 3 to 7 p.m. at the Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot.

Burial: Rosehill Memorial Park, Minot.

Memorials are preferred to the American Cancer Society, PO Box 22718, Oklahoma City, OK 73123-1718.
