Doris Berglund

March 5, 1913-Oct. 4, 2006

Doris L. Berglund, 93, New Town, died Wednesday, October 4, 2006, in a Parshall nursing home.

Doris Lillian Berglund was born in Benson, MN, on March 5, 1913, the daughter of Christopher and Nellie Sevalson. In 1915 the family homesteaded south of Van Hook. Doris grew up on the family farm, the oldest of five children, and attended Van Hook High School, where she was captain of the girls’ basketball team for three years. The team won the girls’ district championship in 1931.

Following graduation in 1931, Doris attended Minot Teachers College and taught school for three years in a one-room country school between Shell Village and Elbowoods. Doris and her siblings played guitar, violin and sang at many events and gatherings in the area.

On June 11, 1940, she was united in marriage to Beuford Berglund. They operated Doris’ Cafe in Van Hook for six years and farmed south of Van Hook for three years. In 1949, they moved to Ray and operated the Bijou Theatre. In 1956, they purchased the Trail Theatre in New Town and operated it for many years. Doris also worked at the New Town Clinic from 1968 to 1974.

In 1983, Doris moved to Minot.

She was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church, New Town, and was active in many civic organizations. She was a very good card player and liked to play whist and bridge.

Survivors include: three sons, Terry (Maria) of Watford City, Almit (Nancy) of Buffalo, WY, and Dennis (Annette) of Twin Valley, MN; two sisters, Gertrude Caya (William) of Portland, OR, and Verlee Snyder (Russell) of Williston; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by Beuford, her parents, her only brother, Marvin Sevalson, and one sister, Laura Ventsch.

Funeral: Monday at 2:00 p.m. in Bethel Lutheran Church, New Town.

Visitation: Sunday from noon to 5:00 p.m. in Langhans Funeral Home, New Town.

Interment: Van Hook Cemetery, New Town.

Everett Ballmann

Sept. 16, 1929-Oct. 7, 2006

Everett Anthony Ballmann passed away on Saturday, October 7, at MeritCare Hospital in Fargo, North Dakota.

Everett was born on September 16, 1929, in Cross County, Arkansas, to Julius William and Margaret (Becker) Ballmann and spent his early years on the family farm in Wynne, Arkansas. He attended high school at St. John’s in Little Rock, Arkansas, and from 1947 to 1951 he attended Little Rock College where he received a BA in Classics. From 1951 to 1955 he studied Theology at St. John’s Seminary and was ordained. Further studies include the Catholic University at Washington, D.C., where he received an STL in Middle Eastern and Biblical Studies and the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome (SSL). Following completion of his studies, Everett taught at St. John’s Seminary in Little Rock.

Everett and Lois Dawn Ramhurst of Montclair, New Jersey, were married in Essex Fells, New Jersey, on July 9, 1965. To them were born two daughters, Ann and Laura. They lived in Denver, Colorado, where Everett pursued his graduate studies.

After completing his studies in 1968 he accepted a position at Minot State University where he taught courses in American Foreign Policy and International Relations. He was an adviser for and participated in the annual International Peace Garden Conference. In 1972 he was a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in Miami, Florida. In 1976 Everett was chosen by Governor Art Link to be a charter member of the newly formed North Dakota Judicial Conduct Committee and during the 1980s he served on the North Dakota Humanities Council.

Following his retirement from Minot State University in 1996, Everett volunteered as a bailiff for the Minot Police Department. Everett and his wife were members of Little Flower Parish in Minot and he served on numerous committees.

In 2002 Everett and Dawn moved to Riverview Place in Fargo, ND. He served on the Peace and Justice Committee for the Presentation Sisters and he and his wife were also Associates. He was a member of Pax Christi and Amnesty International. He found working with refugees toward citizenship in the Giving and Learning Program very rewarding. He was actively involved in several areas at Riverview Place and felt this was home.

Everett was an advocate of peace, non-violence and social justice and spent his life working toward those ends. He loved his family and especially those times spent with his grandchildren. Everett will be remembered for his kindness, compassion, intelligence, sense of humor and peaceful nature. He will be greatly missed by his family, former students and many friends.

He is survived by his wife, Dawn, daughters: Ann (Scott) Grumann, Laura (Rick) Thibert; grandchildren: Emily Grumann, Eric Thibert and Matthew Thibert; three sisters: Rita (James) Walters, Bentonville, Arkansas; Matilda (William) Baker, Fredericksburg, Virginia; Francis “Pat” (James) Meade, Memphis, Tennessee; one brother; Herman “Bill” (Loretta) Ballmann, Wynne, Arkansas; and eleven nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers-in-law, James Meade and William Baker.

Visitation: Tuesday, October 10, at Riverview Place, 5300 12th Avenue South, Fargo beginning at 6:00 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m.

Funeral: Wednesday, October 11, at Riverview Place at 1:00 p.m.

Burial: Holy Cross Cemetery South, Fargo, following the funeral.

Arrangements entrusted to the care of Boulger Funeral Home in Fargo.

Kay Baker

Dec. 23, 1912-Oct. 4, 2006

Kathryn Nina “Kay” Baker, 93, 800-16th Ave. SE, Minot, died on Wednesday, Oct. 4, 2006, in her home.,

Kay was born on Dec. 23, 1912, in Minneapolis, Minn., to Edward and Anna (Hansen) McGrath. She was raised and educated in Minneapolis and in Minot, where she graduated from Minot High School in 1931, and from Minot State University in 1935. As a young adult she was employed at KLPM Radio in Minot where she was the host of “Auntie Kayís Program,” which featured storytelling and singing.

Kay married C.W. “Bill” Baker on Jan. 28, 1940, in Minot. They made their home in Minot, where she was employed at I. Keating Furniture World as a secretary prior to beginning employment with the Minot Public Schools. She served as a secretary for 16 years at Minot High School and Erik Ramstad Middle School before she retired in 1975. Bill died on March 14, 1982. She had resided at Edgewood Vista since 1999.

Kay was a member of Vincent United Methodist Church, where she was active in the music ministry of the church as a choir member and was a member of the United Methodist Women, Ruth Circle and Evening Circle. She was a member of the Coterie Club, Compass Homemakers Club, Sigma Sigma Sigma Sorority and Campus Players. She was a charter member of Sweet Adelines Choral Group and served as the accompanist for Maupin Dance Studio productions. She especially enjoyed singing and piano playing.

Kayís family includes her children, Carol Baker of Bloomington, Ill., Beatrice Goodwin of San Diego, Calif., Robert (Patricia) Baker of Kilgore, Texas, Marcus Baker of Sonoma, Calif., and Edward Baker of Minot; daughter-in-law, Jane Kemper of Minot; 13 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Kay was preceded in death by her parents; husband and sister Bernice “Bonnie” Carlson

Funeral service: Monday, Oct. 9, 2006, at 11 a.m. in Vincent United Methodist Church, Minot.

Interment: Rosehill Memorial Park, Minot.

Visitation: Today from noon to 5 p.m. in Thomas Family Funeral Home, Minot.

In lieu of plants and flowers, memorials are preferred to Vincent United Methodist Church or the church choir, Minot.

Barbara Haustveit

Jan. 20, 1940-Oct. 11, 2006

TIOGA – Barbara Nadean Haustveit, 66, rural Tioga, died Wednesday, Oct. 11, 2006, in a Minot hospital.

She was born Jan. 20, 1940, to Cecil and Madalyn Yowell in Blytheville, Ark. She married Curtis Haustveit Aug. 2, 1957, in Reno, Nev.

Survivors: husband; son, Curtis, Fremont, Calif.; daughter, Aaron Haustviet, Fremont; one grandson; sisters, Helen Griffith, Fremont, Linda Barnes, Adona, Ark., Ann Craft, Centerville, Calif.

Funeral: Tuesday at 11 a.m. in Fulkerson Funeral Home, Tioga.

Cremation will follow.

Visitation: Monday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the funeral home.
