Lillian Carlson

Lillian Carlson, 89, Grand Forks, died Monday, Dec. 4, 2000, in the Larimore (N.D.) Good Samaritan Nursing Center, where she had lived since December 1999.

Lillian Viola Torgeson was born Dec. 17, 1910, the daughter of Nels and Laura (Stokke) Torgeson, in Emerado, N.D., where she attended school. She married Clarence Carlson on Sept. 17, 1930, in Crookston. They farmed in the Emerado area until 1956. Clarence Carlson died Aug. 26, 1959. She moved to Grand Forks, where she worked for Valley Memorial Homes as a certified nurse's assistant for 24 years.

She is survived by a daughter, Rosella (Clifford) Miller, Livermore, Calif.; a son, Clarence (Julie) Jr., Arvilla, N.D.; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren; and sisters, Grace Barry, Grand Forks, Hazel Harvey, East Grand Forks, and Muriel Craft, Crosby, Minn.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Donna Mac; a grandson; sisters, Alma Stastad, Nellie Nygaard, Myrtle Rodlund and Pearl Torgeson; and brothers, Clarence, Alvin, Orville and Stanley.

Services: 10 a.m. Friday, Augustana Lutheran Church, Grand Forks.

Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, Amundson Funeral Home.

Burial: Arvilla Cemetery.

Bennie Holmen

HATTON, N.D. -- Bennie Holmen, 82, Hatton, died Monday, Dec. 4, 2000, in MeritCare Hospital, Fargo.

Bennie Holmen was born July 21, 1918, the son of Axel and Caroline (Myra) Holmen, in Hatton. He grew up in the Hatton area and later served in the Civilian Conservation Corps. He married Pearl Waslien on Oct. 3, 1939, in Fisher, Minn. He farmed in the Hatton area until retiring in 1978. He worked with the Traill County Highway Department until 1988. Pearl Holmen died June 26, 1977. He married June Hopewell Thompson on Feb. 23, 1980, in Grand Forks. They lived in Hatton. June Holmen died Dec. 3, 2000.

He is survived by daughters, Sharon (Darrell) Stormoe, Hatton, Eileen (Larry) Domier, Mayville, N.D., and Bonnie (Tom) Knodle, Williston, N.D.; 16 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; a sister, Phyllis Buchholz, Stewartville, Minn., and a sister-in-law, Eleanor Holmen, Hatton.

He was preceded in death by daughters, Marjorie Corbett and Vickie Amb; brothers, Franklin and Rodger; and sisters, Audrey Kobbervig and Isla Larson.

Services: 2 p.m. Thursday, St. John Lutheran Church, Hatton.

Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m. today, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, Bilden Funeral Home, Hatton.

Burial: St. John Cemetery, Hatton.

Karen Gellner

LANGDON, N.D. -- Karen Gellner, 54, Langdon, died Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2000, in MeritCare Hospital, Fargo.

Karen Elizabeth Rude was born Aug. 25, 1946, the daughter of Olaf and Geneva (Prescott) Rude, in Langdon. She grew up in Mona, N.D., and attended school in Langdon. She married Larry Gellner on Oct. 20, 1964, in Langdon.

She is survived by her husband; daughters, Tammy (Collin) Loerzel, Dent, Minn., Holly (Kelly) Weiner, Fargo, and Joni (Chad) Henderson and Karie (Pat) Blake, both of Langdon; four grandchildren; brothers, Walter and Clemens, both of Langdon; and a sister, Anna Mae Olson, Langdon.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and a brother, Leslie.

Services: 2 p.m. Thursday, St. Alphonsus Catholic Church, Langdon.

Visitation: 3 to 5 p.m. today, Brooks Funeral Home, Langdon, with a 7: 30 p.m. prayer service, in the church.

Joseph Keller

DEVILS LAKE -- Joseph Keller, 79, Devils Lake, died Thursday, Oct. 5, 2000, in Altru Hospital, Grand Forks.

Joseph Keller was born Nov. 12, 1920, in Selz, N.D., where he attended school. He married Kathryn Schwab on Sept. 15, 1941, in Devils Lake, where they lived. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, from 1942 to Sept. 15, 1945. He received a Purple Heart. He worked for National Tea, Mitchel's Cafe, and as a meter reader for Otter Tail Power Co., for 37 years. He retired in 1982. He later worked for Gilbertson Funeral Home.

He is survived by his wife; a daughter, Patricia (Gerald) Idland, Devils Lake; a son, Joseph Jr. (Bonnie), Bakersfield, Calif.; seven grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; brothers, Raymond (Jeanne) Eisenzimmer, William (Virginia) Eisenzimmer, and Paul (Marge) Eisenzimmer, all of Devils Lake, and Jack (Sue) Eisenzimmer, Grand Forks; and a sister, Marie (Jack) Michel, Minneapolis.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Floyd Eisenzimmer; and a sister, Alice Weber.

Services: 10 a.m. Monday, St. Joseph Catholic Church, Devils Lake.

Visitation: 1 to 9 p.m. Sunday, with a 7 p.m. rosary and vigil service, Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake, and one hour before services in the church.

Burial: St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery.

Military rites: Neathery-Simensen Post No. 756 Devils Lake veterans of Foreign Wars.

Robert Wangenstein

THIEF RIVER FALLS -- Robert "Butch" Wangenstein, 59, Thief River Falls, died Monday, Aug. 7, 2000, at home.

Bart Robert Wangenstein was born Feb. 6, 1941, the son of Bart and Dorothy (Holm) Wangenstein, in Roseau, Minn. He graduated from high school in Thief River Falls, in 1959. He attended jewelry repair school in Minneapolis. He returned to Thief River Falls and worked at the family jewelry store, The Wangenstein store, until retiring in 1977.

He is survived by his mother, Thief River Falls; and sisters, Marjorie (Ivan) Radi, Grand Forks, and Barbara (Jerry) Oppermann, Minneapolis.

He was preceded in death by his father; and a brother-in-law, Doug Tegtmeier.

Services: 2 p.m. Friday, Trinity Lutheran Church, Thief River Falls.

Visitation: 3 to 8 p.m. today, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, Green Funeral Home, Thief River Falls, and one hour before services in the church.

Jeannette Dennis

NIAGARA, N.D. -- Jeannette S. Dennis, 80, Howell, Mich., formerly of Niagara, died Friday, August 18, 2000, in Howell.

Jeannette S. Sauvie was born Oct. 13, 1919, the daughter of Silas and Agnes Sauvie, in Pleasant Lake, N.D. She graduated from high school in Niagara and attended Mayville Teachers College. She married Clarence Dennis in Washington D.C. She lived in Ft. Pierce, Fla., and then moved to Michigan. She was a writer and an artist.

She is survived by a son, Robert, California; a daughter, Terry Dennis-Kirk (Terry Kirk), East Lansing, Mich.; two grandchildren; and her companion, Robert Passassanat, Ft. Pierce.

She was preceded in death by her husband and two brothers.

Memorial Services: Lincoln, Neb., and Ft. Pierce. Memorials are suggested to a favorite charity in Jeannette's name.

Violet Gunderson

Violet R. Gunderson, 80, Grand Forks, died Sunday, Aug. 20, 2000, in Chaska, Minn.

Violet Regina Zeis was born Aug. 13, 1920, the daughter of Matthew and Bertha (Dosmann) Zeis, in Wales, N.D., where she attended school. She moved to Minnesota and worked as a nurses aide. She worked in the shipyards in Oregon from 1942 to 1944. She married Harvey Gunderson on May 11, 1946, in Dilworth, Minn. They lived in Fargo until moving to Grand Forks in 1948. Harvey Gunderson died Aug. 4, 1985.

She is survived by sons, Garreth (Peggy), Afton, Minn., and Bradley (Therese), Chaska; a daughter, Marsha (Bruce) Qvammen, Audubon, Minn.; seven grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; a brother, James, Fargo; and sisters, Eileen Ryan, Wales, Annie (Jerry) Miller and Mary (Frank) Lothspeich, both of Fargo.

She was preceded in death by an infant son; brothers, Benedict and Allen; a sister, Linda Docken; sisters-in-law, Eileen Zeis and Betty Zeis; and a brother-in-law, George Docken.

Services: 11 a.m. Thursday, St. Mary's Catholic Church, Grand Forks.

Visitation: 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, Norman Funeral Home, Columbia Road, and one hour before services in the church.

Burial: Sunnywood Gardens Cemetery.
