George Bakken

CROOKSTON -- George C. Bakken, 65, Crookston, died Saturday, Dec. 23, 2000, in Dakota Hospital, Fargo.

George C. Bakken was born Jan. 19, 1935, the son of Adolph and Laura (Jasper) Bakken, in Hammond, Ind. He moved with his family to Red Lake Falls, Minn., where he graduated from high school in 1952. He attended UND. He married Marian Hoiseth on Oct. 29, 1955, in Crookston. They lived in Crookston. He worked for Glendenning Trucking and for more than 20 years with Wylie Trucking, Fargo, where he currently was employed.

He is survived by his wife; sons, Mark (Marva) and Keith (Gladys), both of Crookston; a daughter, Lynnette (Stanley) Griffith, Rock Springs, Wyo.; his mother, Crookston; six grandchildren; and a brother, Larry (Judy), Grand Forks.

He was preceded in death by his father.

Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday, St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Crookston.

Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, and one hour before services, all in the church.

Burial: Oakdale Cemetery, Crookston (Stenshoel-Houske, Crookston).

Oris Slettebak

NORTHWOOD, N.D. -- Oris A. Slettebak, 67, Northwood, formerly of Petersburg, N.D., died Saturday, Dec. 23, 2000, in Deaconess Health Center, Northwood.

Oris A. Slettebak was born March 30, 1933, the son of Andrew and Olea (Johnson) Slettebak, in Petersburg, where he graduated from high school. He attended Wahpeton (N.D.) State School of Science. He married Carol Gilbertson on Oct. 30, 1955, in Niagara, N.D. They lived and farmed in the Petersburg area. He worked in several jobs until 1992, when he moved to Northwood, where he also worked several jobs.

He is survived by his wife; sons, Scott (Terry), Petersburg, and Orin (Darlene), Michigan, N.D.; daughters, Carla (Dean) Venske and Tami (Scott) Adolphsen, both of Northwood, Vicki (Dennis) Best, Fordville, N.D., Shelli (Wade) Crowe, Buxton, N.D., and DeAnn (Tim) Buckhouse, Fargo; 16 grandchildren; and a brother, James (MaryAnn), Yuma, Ariz.

He was preceded in death by a grandson; his parents; brothers, Raymond and Donald; and a sister, Ruthi DelGrande.

Services: 10: 30 a.m. Thursday, Petersburg Lutheran Church.

Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, Bakke Funeral Home, Larimore, and one hour before services in the church.

Burial: Petersburg Cemetery.

Lois Claver

Lois E. Claver, 83, formerly of Grand Forks, died Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2000, in Hillcrest Nursing Home, Red Lake Falls, Minn.

Lois Erna Scott was born Feb. 26, 1917, the daughter of Lowell and Clara (Lantz) Scott, in Langdon, N.D. She grew up and attended school in the Langdon-Wells area. She married Albert Bohn in 1936. In 1945, she moved to Grand Forks. She worked as a nurses aide at the Deaconess Hospital, and a surgical nurse at the Grand Forks Clinic. She later worked as a Foster Grandparent in Grand Forks. She married Ray Claver in 1955. He died in 1972. She lived in St. Anne's Guest Home and Good Samaritan Nursing Home, East Grand Forks, until she was evacuated to Hillcrest Nursing Home due to the flood of 1997.

She is survived by a daughter, Beverly (Curt) Strode, Denver; and a granddaughter.

She was preceded in death by a son, Gene Alden Bohn.

Services: 2 p.m. Tuesday, United Lutheran Church, Grand Forks.

Visitation: One hour before services in the church.

Burial: Sunnywood Gardens Cemetery, Grand Forks (Amundson, Grand Forks).

Mary Bellamy

DRAYTON, N.D. -- Mary E. Bellamy, 83, Tucson, Ariz., formerly of Drayton, died Sunday, Nov. 19, 2000, in Tucson, where she had lived for the past 26 years.

Mary Elizabeth Johnston was born July 12, 1917, the daughter of Earls and Julia (Twedt) Johnston, in Crystal, N.D. She grew up and attended school in Elora Township. She graduated from Mayville State College and taught school at Bellamy District 80 School. She married William Bellamy on June 25, 1939. They lived and farmed near Drayton. William Bellamy died in 1976.

She is survived by a son, William (Meg) Bellamy, St. Cloud; a grandson; and a sister, Lorraine Reilly, Crystal, N.D.

She was preceded in death by four brothers; and two sisters.

Services: 2 p.m. Sunday, Drayton United Methodist Church.

Visitation: Two hours before services in the church.

Burial: 10 a.m. Monday, Crystal Cemetery. Memorials are suggest to Drayton United Methodist Church (Adamson-Austin, Drayton).

Robert Schlittenhard Sr.

Robert Schlittenhard Sr., 83, Grand Forks, died Sunday, Sept. 17, 2000, in Altru Hospital.

Robert Schlittenhard was born Dec. 30, 1916, the son of David and Rosina (Rechdoldt) Schlittenhard, in Gackle, N.D., where he attended school. He married Helen Speidel on Dec. 14, 1941, in Gackle. He joined the U.S. Army from May 21, 1942 until April 16, 1943. He returned to Gackle, where he began farming until 1945. He then worked at the Lumber Yard until 1948 and then the Gackle Locker and Meat Cutting Plant. He moved to Jamestown, where he worked at the Queen City Locker Plant. In 1959, they moved to Langdon, N.D., where he worked for National Key Foods and Piggly Wiggly until 1964. They moved to Grand Forks, where he worked for Miller Foods until retiring. He worked for Sears until 1978. In 1997, they moved to Cavalier, N.D. Helen Schlittenhard died Nov. 22, 1998. He moved to Grand Forks in 1999.

He is survived by his children, Robert Jr. (Linda), Cavalier, Clayton (Maureen), Langdon, and Jerane Johnson and Jolene (David) Gosselin, both of Grand Forks; foster children, Walter Kram, Moorhead, and Harry Kram, Manchester, N.H.; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and sisters, Molly Rieger and Emilia Schlittenhard, both of Fargo.

He was preceded in death by three brothers; and two sisters.

Services: 1 p.m. Wednesday, Haut Funeral Home, Gackle.

Burial: Gackle Cemetery.

Violet Turner

Violet L. Turner, 75, formerly of Grand Forks, died Oct. 19, 2000, in Des Moines, Wash.

Violet L. Turner was born April 17, 1925, in St. Thomas, N.D. She lived in Grand Forks until 1942, when she moved to Seattle. She worked as a Rosie the riveter during the war and then as a dental assistant. She lived in Seattle for 50 years.

She is survived by a son, Michael, Kent, Wash.; a daughter, Phyllis Monson, Ridgecrest, Calif.; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and sisters, Mickey Bigwood and Donna Nieman, both of St. Thomas, and Evelyn Thom, Bathgate, N.D.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Wesley; and a son, Patrick.

Services: Were held in Marlatt Funeral Home, Kent, Wash.

Burial: Willamette National Cemetery, Portland, Ore.

Albina Svercl

MICHIGAN, N.D. -- Albina M. Svercl, 89, Michigan, died Thursday, Nov. 16, 2000, in Nelson County Health System Care Center, McVille, N.D.

Albina M. Paukert was born Oct. 1, 1911, the daughter of Ed and Mary (Kubat) Paukert, in Sauter Township, Walsh County, N.D., where she attended school. She married Joseph Svercl on Nov. 1, 1927, in Lakota, N.D. They farmed in the Brocket and Lawton, N.D., area. She retired in 1993. Joseph Svercl died July 29, 1994. She moved to Michigan.

She is survived by a daughter, Delores (Duane) Ryba, Michigan; a son, Gordon (Pauline), Brocket; a daughter-in-law, Bernice Svercl, Fordville, N.D.; a son-in-law, Leo Kirchoffner, Grafton, N.D.; 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; a brother, Ed, Grand Forks; and a sister, Mary Klug, Grafton.

She was preceded in death by sons, Ervin and Donald; a daughter, Grace Kirchoffner; a grandson; a great-granddaughter; and a brother, Jim.

Services: 2 p.m. Monday, Aaker Funeral Home, Lakota.

Visitation: 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday and before services in the funeral home.

Burial: ZCBJ-Kosobud Cemetery, Lankin.
