Nora Payer

BELCOURT, N.D. -- Nora Payer, 57, Belcourt, died Thursday, Nov. 23, 2000, in Belcourt Hospital.

Nora Mary Pflugradt was born Aug. 19, 1943, the daughter of Jack and Zelma (Swain) Pflugradt, in Cando, N.D. She grew up in Belcourt, Garrison, N.D., and Fort Pierre, S.D. She attended school in Belcourt, Coleharbor, N.D., and Fort Pierre. She married Ernest Payer Sr. on Nov. 17, 1951, in Fort Pierre. They lived in Fort Pierre until moving to Rolette. They lived in Rolla and Douglas, N.D. before moving to Belcourt. Ernest Payer died Dec. 25, 1984.

She is survived by sons, Terry Sr. (Delima), St. John, N.D., Jon (Joann), Windsor, Calif., Ernest Jr. (Vicky), Granville, N.D.; daughters, Theresa (Charles) Usselman, Drake, N.D., Brenda (Cornelius) Jackson, St. Louis, Sheila Payer, Minot; 16 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; her mother, Belcourt; sisters, Cynthia Pflugradt, Dorothy (Robert) Balucki, both of Minot; and companion, Antoine Thomas, Belcourt.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Lorna; and her father.

Services: 10 a.m. Wednesday, St. Ann's Catholic Church, Belcourt.

Visitation: Begins today at 5: 30 p.m., with an 8 p.m. vigil service, in Niewoehner Funeral Home, Belcourt.

Burial: Church cemetery.

Jay Kirkeide

RUGBY, N.D. -- Jay M. Kirkeide, 80, Rugby, formerly of York, N.D., died Sunday, Oct. 29, 2000, in Heart of America Medical Center, Rugby.

Jay Marvin Kirkeide was born July 1, 1920, the son of John and Martha (Dokseth) Kirkeide, in Broe Township, Knox County, N.D. He attended school in Baker, N.D. He took over the family farm and cared for his family. He married Faye Britsch on Jan. 21, 1967, in Fargo. He retired in 1984 and moved to Rugby.

He is survived by his wife; a stepson, Bryan Britsch, York; a stepdaughter, Diane (Ed) Ripplinger, Leeds, N.D.; six stepgrandchildren; five stepgreat-grandchildren; and a sister, Adeline Kirkeide, Devils Lake.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Myrtle Maloney; and brothers, Kenneth, Einar, Melvin, and LeVon.

Services: Private family service.

Visitation: 2 to 8 p.m. today, Nelson Funeral Home, Leeds, N.D.

Burial: St. Petri Lutheran Cemetery, York.

Betty Hornstein

BATHGATE, N.D. -- Betty Hornstein, 74, Cheyenne, Wyo., formerly of Bathgate, died Saturday, Nov. 25, 2000, in Cheyenne.

Betty Jean Lilke was born Feb. 2, 1926, the daughter of John and May (Hall) Lilke, in Bathgate, where she attended school. She married Thomas Hurst in 1946, in Bowesmont, N.D. She married Tony Hornstein in 1964, in Colorado. She worked for De Paul Hospital in Cheyenne.

She is survived by her husband; sons, Michael Hurst, Galesburg, Ill., James Hurst, Tampa, Fla., and Terry Hurst, Grand Forks; four stepsons; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; brothers, Carl and Vernon, both of Grand Forks; and sisters, Doris (Ted) Blaski, Denver, Louise (George) Swanson, Tacoma, Wash., Phyllis (Andy) Woida, Crystal, Minn., Donna Kirkeby, East Grand Forks, and Helen Rocksvold, Grand Forks.

She was preceded in death by a stepdaughter; a grandchild; and five brothers.

Services: 10 a.m. Wednesday, Holy Trinity Church, Cheyenne.

Douglas Elliott

BEMIDJI -- Douglas W. Elliott, 32, Minneapolis, formerly of Bemidji, died Friday, Sept. 15, 2000, in Minneapolis.

Douglas Warren Elliott was born Jan. 6, 1968, the son of William and Gwen (Warren) Elliott, in Bemidji, where he attended school, graduating in 1986. He attended Bemidji State University graduating in 1991, with bachelor of arts degrees in political science and English. He graduated in June 1999 from the University of Minnesota with a master of arts in visual communication. He had been working in Minneapolis as a freelance production coordinator on film projects in the area.

He is survived by his mother and stepfather, Gwen and George Salner, Bemidji; a sister, Sharon (Tom Lavallee) Elliott, St. Louis; and a stepsister, Rebecca Salner, Campbell, Calif.

He was preceded in death by his father.

Memorial services: 2 p.m. Saturday, Olson-Schwartz Funeral Home, Bemidji.

Burial: Greenwood Cemetery, Bemidji. Memorials are suggested to the National Film Preservation Foundation, 870 Market Street, Suite 1113, San Francisco, CA 94102.

Lyla Quam

THIEF RIVER FALLS -- Lyla Quam, 81, Thief River Falls, died Sunday, Nov. 26, 2000, in Northwest Medical Center, Convalescent Nursing Care Unit, Thief River Falls.

Lyla Evangeline Steen was born June 8, 1919, the daughter of Hans and Oline (Aslakson) Steen, in Bucyrus, N.D., where she attended school. She moved with her family to McIntosh, Minn., where she graduated from high school in 1936. She married Edwin Quam on Jan. 18, 1945, in Long Beach, Calif. They lived in Minneapolis until moving to Rosewood, Minn., where they lived from 1947 to 1989. In 1989, they moved to Thief River Falls. She worked at Jung's Bakery from 1949 to 1952. She also worked in the Convalescent Nursing Care Unit in Thief River Falls from 1970 to 1975. Edwin Quam died Dec. 14, 1992.

She is survived by a son, Gary (Theresa), Detroit Lakes, Minn.; a daughter, Valerie (Jay) Gjernes, Golden Valley, Minn.; four grandsons; four stepgrandchildren; a sister-in-law, Verna Steen, Hettinger, N.D.; and a brother-in-law, Bob Baker, Cooperstown, N.D.

She was preceded in death by sisters, Beatrice Hokenson, Florence Baker and Helen Enerson; and a brother, Walter.

Services: 11 a.m. Friday, Trinity Lutheran Church, Thief River Falls.

Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, with a 7 p.m. prayer service in Green Funeral Home, Thief River Falls, and one hour before services in the church.

Burial: Greenwood Cemetery, Thief River Falls.

Edwin Gussiaas

CARRINGTON, N.D. -- Edwin C. Gussiaas, 80, Carrington, died Thursday, Aug. 10, 2000, at home.

Edwin Clarence Gussiaas was born Feb. 3, 1920, the son of Andrew and Thea (Edwardson) Gussiaas, in Nordmore Township, where he attended school. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He married Margaret Schroeder on Nov. 6, 1947, in Kensal, N.D. They farmed near Carrington. Margaret Gussiaas died Oct. 8, 1998.

He is survived by a daughter, Connie (Lowell) Medhus, Hardin, Mont.; four grandchildren; brothers, Henry (Phyllis), Carrington, and Luverne (Beatrice), New Rockford, N.D.; and sisters, Olga Landon, Thelma Landon, Norma Gussiaas and Judy (Irwin) Swanson, all of Carrington, and Mabel (Daris) Bittner, Cathay, N.D.

He was preceded in death by five brothers; and two sisters.

Services: 10: 30 a.m. Monday, Grace Lutheran Church, Carrington.

Visitation: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to 8: 30 p.m. Sunday, Evans Funeral Home, Carrington.

Burial: Carrington Cemetery.

Military Rites American Legion John Raymond O'HaraPost No. 25 and VFW McCreary-Bonderud Post No. 3524, both of Carrington.

Stephen Vilven

CROOKSTON -- Stephen Vilven, 86, Willmar, Minn., formerly of Crookston, died Aug. 5, 2000, in Rice Memorial Hospital.

Stephen Edward Vilven was born March 14, 1914, the son of Charles and Jessie (Owens) Vilven, in Crookston, where he graduated from high school. He worked for farmers in the Crookston area. He then moved to California, where he worked for Lockheed Aircraft Co. He married Mary Brundage on Sept. 3, 1943, in Bagley, Minn. He joined the U.S. Army Air Corp during World War II and joined the U.S. Air Force when it began. He retired as a recruiter for the Air Force in 1966, after 22¤1/2 years of service. He then worked for the State of Minnesota as a drivers license examiner in Duluth. In 1980, they moved to Farmington, N.M. In 1992, they moved to Willmar.

He is survived by his wife; sons, Charles (Shelly), Spicer, Minn., and Keith, Willmar; daughters, Birdie Swenson and Stephania Vilven, both of Willmar; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and brothers, Milo (Mildred), Crookston, and David (Joan), Farmington.

He was preceded in death by an infant daughter; and a sister, Evelyn.

Services: Were held in Willmar (Peterson, Willmar).
