Arthur J. Maasjo
Funeral services for Arthur J. Maasjo, 79, Valley City (formerly of Fingal), were held on Saturday, December 1, 2001 at Waldheim Lutheran Church, rural Kathryn. Reverend Bradley Edin officiated. Mr. Maasjo died on Wednesday, November 28, 2001 at MeritCare Hospital, Fargo.
Arthur J. Maasjo, son of John and Minnie (Lund) Maasjo, was born on July 10, 1922 in Fingal. He grew up and attended school in Norma Township, near Fingal. He worked on the family farm until entering the United States Army on January 26, 1946.
On June 8, 1946, he married Alvira Geneva Solheim in Valley City. He was discharged from the service on March 11, 1947. Upon his discharge, they made their home in Thordenskjold Township, near Fingal, where they farmed until retiring in 1986. They moved to Valley City in 1987. He was a member of Waldheim Lutheran Church and the Peterson-Swenson American Legion Post #83 in Nome.
He is survived by one niece, Rebecca (Jason) Sorby, Kathryn, and a great nephew. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Alvira Maasjo, who died November 3, 1996; and a brother, Simon.
Interment at Waldheim Cemetery, rural Kathryn.
Oliver-Nathan Funeral Chapel, Valley City, was in charge of arrangements.

Helen E. Monson
Funeral services for Helen E. Monson, 85, Fort Ransom, were held on Tuesday, December 4, 2001 at Standing Rock Lutheran Church, Fort Ransom. Reverend David Carlson officiated. Mrs. Monson died Thursday, November 29, 2001 at Lisbon Medical Center Nursing Home.
Helen E. Olson, daughter of John and Anne (Nelson) Olson, was born on February 4, 1916 in Buffalo, S.D. She attended and graduated from school in Fort Ransom. Helen also attended Business College in Minneapolis. She worked for Lutheran Brotherhood Insurance in Minneapolis from 1937 to 1954.
On June 5, 1954, she married Edward G. Monson in Aberdeen. She then worked in various offices in Kearney, Neb., where they made their home until retiring to Fort Ransom in 1975.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Edward Monson, who died February 28, 1995; two sisters and six brothers.
Pallbearers for the funeral were Kermit Olson, Curtis Olson, Vincent Olson, Virgil Olson, Virgil Anderson and Robert Gaasland.
Music was provided by organist Mary Johnson and soloist Evelyn Runck.
Interment at Standing Rock Lutheran Cemetery, Fort Ransom.

Melvin L. (Bus) Seelye
Funeral services for Melvin L. (Bus) Seelye, 81, Lisbon, were held on Monday, December 3, 2001 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Lisbon. Reverend Norman Anderson and Reverend David Killeen officiated. Mr. Seelye died on Thursday, November 29, 2001 at the Lisbon Medical Center Nursing Home, Lisbon.
Melvin L. Seelye, son of Walter and Lena (Adolfs) Seelye, was born on April 24, 1920 in rural Elliott. He attended a rural school near Elliott.
On December 29, 1975, he married Lois Freeberg Swanson in Webster, S.D. “Bus” farmed near Elliott and also hauled cattle. They moved to Lisbon in 1996.
He was survived by his wife, Lois Seelye, Lisbon; four sons, Marvin J. (Susan) Swanson, LIsbon, Marlow (Karen) Swanson, Mechanicsville, Pa., Larry (Kay) Swanson, Gwinner, and David (Darcie) Swanson, Prineville, Ore.; two daughters, Cheryl (Wendell) Wolters, Lisbon and Marcia (John) Nefs, Grand Forks; 19 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; one brother, Clifford (Betty) Seelye, Fort Ransom; two sisters, Ida Maack, Foxhome, Minn. and Ethel Maack, Fergus Falls, Minn. He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Louella Potter, Margie Belser and Blanche Adolfs; and three brothers, Beryl Seelye, Chet Seelye and Fred Baumgardner.
Pallbearers for the funeral were Melvin Adolfs, Henry Henricks, Ronnie Elijah, Marvin J. Swanson, Larry Swanson and Wendell Wolters.
Music was provided by organist Jan Hansen and soloist Keith Skonseng.
Interment at Oakwood Cemetery, Lisbon.

Marjorie Vangsness
Funeral services for Marjorie Vangsness, 57, Lisbon, were held on Saturday, December 1, 2001 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Lisbon. Reverend Norman Anderson officiated. Mrs. Vangsness died on Tuesday, November 27, 2001 at MeritCare Hospital, Fargo.
Marjorie Elizabeth Haga, daughter of Paul and Della (Medd) Haga, was born on February 27, 1944 in Northwood, N.D. She attended Northwood schools and also the University of North Dakota. She graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Music Education with emphasis on the pipe organ. While in high school and college, she began playing organ for church services.
On June 11, 1966, she married Norman Vangsness in Northwood. They lived for a short time in Grand Forks, moving to West Fargo in September 1966. While there, she worked at NDSU and also gave private music lessons. In 1967, they moved to Lisbon. Marjorie continued with her music career, giving private lessons. She also taught music at Sheldon and Lisbon public schools. She was a church organist at Trinity Lutheran Church for many years. She played for many weddings and funerals during her adult life.
She is survived by her husband, Norman Vangsness, Lisbon; one daughter, Janyne Vangsness, Fargo; one sister, Marcia (Virgil) Sheggerud, Northwood; and two aunts. She was preceded in death by her parents, stepfather, Leonard Lee; and a baby girl.
Pallbearers for the funeral were Darren Sheggerud, Nathan Sheggerud, David Vangsness, Luke Helland, Bruce Madsen and James Dahlen. Honorary pallbearers were all of Marjorie’s former music students.
Music was provided by organist Barbara Maristuen and soloists Jim Bilden and Mary Madsen. The Trinity Lutheran Church Choir sang under the direction of Julie Qual and Roxie Bartosh performed a piano solo.
Interment at West Prairie Cemetery, Kindred.
The Bilden Funeral Home, Northwood, was in charge of arrangements.

William F. Podoll
Funeral services for William “Bill” Franklin Podoll, 88, Fullerton, N.D., were held on Thursday, December 6, 2001 at First Presbyterian Church, LaMoure. Reverend Tony Serbousek officiated. Mr. Podoll died on Monday, December 3, 2001 at St. Rose Care Center, LaMoure.
William Franklin Podoll, son of Adolph and Louise (Schober) Podoll, was born on September 20, 1913 in Jud, N.D. He grew up and attended school in the Nortonville, N.D. area. After his schooling, Bill worked on his father’s farm before entering the C.C.Cs in Utah in the 1930s, working as a cook. Bill moved back to North Dakota and worked for the poultry department at the North Dakota Agricultural College, Fargo, and on the North Dakota Poultry Improvement Board, Bismarck. He also worked at the Land O’Lakes Hatchery, Valley City.
On June 5, 1949, he married Irene Hanning in Jamestown. The couple moved to a farm near LaMoure in November 1953 where they farmed and raised turkeys until retiring in 1974. He was a member of Cottonwood Presbyterian Church and First Presbyterian Church, LaMoure, where he served as the clerk of session for several years for both churches. He served on the LaMoure School Board, Wright Township and the Dickey County Farmers Union Board. Bill judged poultry at county fairs for many years and was instrumental in commercial turkey breeding in North Dakota. He was also a member of the Four Squares Square Dancing Club in LaMoure. He became a resident of St. Rose Care Center, LaMoure, in January 1999.
He is survived by his wife, Irene Podoll, Fullerton; four sons, Donald (Candace) Podoll, Adrian, N.D., David Podoll, Fullerton, Michael (Amy) Podoll, Marion, Iowa, and Daniel (Theresa) Podoll, Fullerton; one daughter, Marjorie Podoll, Verona; three brothers, Walter Podoll, Jamestown, Charles (June) Podoll, LaMoure, and Earl (Janice) Podoll, Edgeley; two sisters, Edna Johnson, Riverside, Calif., and Leona Egstad, Grand Forks; and seven grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and three sisters.
Pallbearers for the funeral were Lyle Winters, Frank Podoll, Richard Podoll, Mark Podoll, Carter Podoll and Robert Valenta. Special music provided by Norm and Sue Goehring and soloist Gwen Thielges. Sandi Podoll read the scripture.
Interment at Rosehill Cemetery, LaMoure.

Merle J. Peterson
Memorial services for Merle J. Peterson, 79, Eugene, Ore, were held on November 28, 2001 at Poole-Larsen Funeral Chapel, Eugene, Ore. Mr. Peterson died on Sunday, November 25, 2001.
Merle J. Peterson, son of Oscar and Hanna (Simons) Peterson, was born on July 14, 1922 in Enderlin. He grew up in Enderlin and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
On November 25, 1946, he married Phyllis Wellentin in Eugene, Ore. He worked as a union painter in Eugene. He was a member of the American Legion and the VFW.
He is survived by his wife, Phyllis Wellentin, Eugene; one daughter, Nadine Peterson, Eugene; two sons, Mark Peterson, Laquinta, Calif. and Brian Peterson, Mt. Prospect, Ill.; one brother, Alvin Peterson, Enderlin; one sister, Dolly Strand, Fargo; and four grandchildren.
Interment at Lane Memorial Gardens, Eugene, Ore.

Irene Edna Zimbelman
Funeral services for Irene Edna Zimbelman, 86, Oakes, were held on Monday, December 3, 2001 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Oakes. Reverend Patrick O’Brien officiated. Mrs. Zimbelman died on Thursday, November 29, 2001 at Oakes Community Hospital, Oakes.
Irene Edna Glaser, daughter of August and Nettie (Lauf) Glaser, was born on May 12, 1915 in Marion, N.D. She attended schools in Marion and LaMoure before moving with her family to Oakes, where she finished her schooling. Irene was confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Oakes.
On June 30, 1936, she married Elmer Zimbleman in Oakes. They lived in Valley City until 1939, when they moved to Oakes. Irene worked for North American Creamery in Oakes for many years. In 1942, Elmer and Irene moved to a farm west of Oakes. In 1964, they moved to Roseburg, Ore, where they were members of St. Paul’s Lutheran church. Elmer and Irene returned to Oakes in 1979 and became members of St. John’s Lutheran Church. Irene was also an active member in the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League.
She is survived by her husband, Elmer Zimbelman, Oakes; two sisters, Edna Salmen, Sacramento, Calif. and Martha (Ray) Hankel, Oakes; and three grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one son, Wayne Zimbel; one daughter-in-law, Sheri Zimbelman; one grandchild; her parents; four brothers and two sisters.
Pallbearers for the funeral were Tom Rodine, Ray Hankel, Walt Dahlke, Neil Lickness, Mack Becking and Alan Zimbelman.
Music was provided by organist Garth Zieman and soloist Tom Rodine.
Interment at Oakes View Cemetery, Oakes.

James “Jim” McMahon
Funeral services for James “Jim” McMahon, 58, St. Joseph, Mo., were held on Monday, December 3, 2001 at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, St. Joseph. Mr. McMahon died on Friday, November 30, 2001 at Heartland East Hospital, St. Joseph.
James McMahon, son of Thomas Edmond and Gladys Lenora (Strand) McMahon, was born on November 22, 1943 in Fargo. He served in the Army for three years and then served in the Navy for eight years, surviving three tours in Vietnam.
On February 27, 1997, he married Patty Jo Sollars.He lived the last nine years in St. Joseph, Mo. Prior to moving to St. Joseph, he had lived in Homestead, Fla., and Dallas, Tex. He was employed by the Missouri Department of Corrections. He was previously employed in the food service business, serving as an area manager for Kentucky Fried Chicken and was a food and beverage manager for the Ramada Inn. He also had worked as a deputy sheriff in Lisbon and Williston. He attended Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church; was a member of the Lisbon VFW; the National Rifle Association and the Vietnam Veteran Association.
He was survived by his wife, Patty Jo McMahon, St. Joseph, Mo.; three daughters, Jamie and Ashley Heintz, St. Joseph, and Mendy Torres, Granbury, Tex.; three brothers, Darrell McMahon, St. Joseph, Dan McMahon, Littleton, Colo., and Roger McMahon, Dallas, Tex.; and four grandchildren.
Graveside military services under the direction of the United States Navy Funeral Honors Team and the auspices of American Legion Post #359.
Interment at Memorial Park Cemetery, St. Joseph.
Heaton-Bowman Smith and Sidenfaden Chapel, St. Joseph, Mo., was in charge of arrangements.
