Evelyn L. Doeling
Funeral services for Evelyn Lorraine Doeling, 92, Carrington, were held on Monday, January 27, 2003 at Grace Lutheran Church, Carrington. Reverend Richard Biberdorf officiated. Mrs. Doeling died on Saturday, January 25, 2003 at Golden Acres Manor, Carrington.
Evelyn Lorraine Doeling, daughter of Herman and Matilda (Froemke) Krueger, was born July 9, 1910 at rural Shenford Township, Ransom County, near Lisbon. She moved with her family to a farm near Sheldon where she grew up and attended school and graduated from the Sheldon High School in 1928. She moved to the Bordulac, N.D., area and worked for the Frank and Alice Schroeder family and met her future husband, George W. Doeling.
On July 19, 1928, she married George W. Doeling in the Evangelical Church southwest of Sheldon. They farmed near Bordulac. She was an active member of the LWML and the Grace Lutheran Church. She was also a 4-H leader. Her husband, George, died on November 9, 1985. She continued to live on the farm until 1996 when she moved into Carrington. Since November 1999, she has resided at the Golden Acres manor of Carrington.
She is survived by three sons, Herman “Dick” (Shirley) Doeling, Edwin (Dolores) Doeling, and Gene (Hannelore) Doeling, all of Carrington; one daughter, Dorothy (Ray) Funden, Newport, Wash.; 12 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Pearl (Herman) Schroeder, Sheldon, and Herma Hendricks, Berwyn, Ill. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, George Doeling; three sisters, Alice Doeling, Myrtle Ridgewell, and Dorothy Krueger; and one granddaughter, Brenda Kanwischer.
Pallbearers for the funeral were her great grandsons, Charles Messall, Jess Doeling, Nicholas Doeling, Tyler Doeling, Joshua Doeling, Benjamin Doeling and Andrew Doeling.
Music was provided by organist Mary Havala with special music by Dolores Doeling.
Interment at Carrington Cemetery, Carrington.
Evans Funeral Home, Carrington, was in charge of arrangements.

Arthur G. Lahlum
Funeral services for Arthur Gustav Lahlum, 94, Valley City (formerly Nome, N.D.) were held on Saturday, February 8, 2003 at Zion Lutheran Church, Nome. Reverend Bradley Edin officiated. Mr. Lahlum died on Sunday, February 2, 2003 at the Sheyenne Care Center, Valley City.
Arthur Gustav Lahlum, son of Simen and Hilda (Jungren) Lahlum, was born on November 24, 1908 in Norma Township, Barnes County, N.D. He attended and graduated from high school at the North Dakota Agricultural College and went on to two years of college there.
On June 14, 1942, he married Evelyn M. Rodlin near Eastedge, N.D. They farmed the family farm until retiring and moving into Valley City in 1994. Evelyn died October 10, 1996. Albert continued to live in Valley City and entered the Sheyenne Care Center on October 31, 2002.
He is survived by one son, Dan (Mary) Lahlum, Kathryn; one daughter-in-law, Barbara Lahlum, Moorhead, Minn; four grandchildren; and one brother, Simen (Eileen) Lahlum, Moorhead. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Evelyn Lahlum; one son, Ronald Lahlum; two brothers, Arthur and Henry Lahlum; and one sister, Selma Olstad.
Interment at St. Petri Cemetery, rural Nome, in the spring.

Loraine E. Johnson
Funeral services for Loraine E. Johnson, 80, Lisbon (formerly LaMoure), were held on Monday, February 3, 2003 at High Prairie Lutheran Church, rural LaMoure. Reverend Norman Anderson officiated. Ms. Johnson died on Thursday, January 30, 2003 at the Lisbon Care Center after a long battle with multiple sclerosis.
Loraine E. Johnson, daughter of Ray and Camilla (Sandness) Johnson, was born October 18, 1922 near LaMoure. She graduated from LaMoure High School and went on to attend Valley City State University before beginning her teaching career. She taught elementary school for many years. She taught in rural North Dakota schools in Gladstone, Greenville and Pearl Lake townships. She also taught in Ulen and Underwood, Minn.; Fullerton and LaMoure, N.D.; and Glendive, Mont. Loraine retired from Roosevelt Elementary in Jamestown, the city where she taught the most years of her career. She then returned to LaMoure to live. She became a resident of the Lisbon Care Center in 1995. She was a member of High Prairie Lutheran Church, ALCW and Circle. She belonged to various education associations and was a community volunteer.
She is survived by her brother, Raymond Johnson, Lisbon; two brothers-in-law, Cliff (Irene) Haro, LaMoure, and Marvin Jones, Fargo; two nieces and four nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Harriet (Cliff) Haro; and a twin sister, Luverne (Marvin) Jones.
Pallbearers for the funeral were Lynn Haro, John Haro, Sam Haro, Roland Lere, James Potts and Tom Jones.
Music was provided by organist Kaylyn Anderson and soloist Jane Haro-LaMotte.
Interment at High Prairie Cemetery in the spring.

Rosalie “Rosie” Olufson
Funeral services for Rosalie “Rosie” Olufson, 72, Valley City, were held on Monday, February 3, 2003 at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, Valley City. Reverend Paul Huso and Reverend Mark Ostgarden officiated. Mrs. Olufson died on Wednesday, January 29, 2003 at Mercy Hospital, Valley City.
Rosalie Russell, daughter of Orval and Lela (Hope) Russell, was born January 31, 1930 in Maryville, Mo. She moved with her family to Valley City in March 1946. She was employed as a waitress at several cafes in Valley City.
On March 14, 1958, she married Leonard Olufson in Moorhead, Minn. The couple made their home at Valley City. Leonard died in 1979 and she continued to live and work at Valley City. In 1978, she began working in the laundry department of Sheyenne Care Center and remained there until her retirement in 1995.
She is survived by her one daughter, Sally (Dean) Basner, Valley City; two sons, Glenn Olufson, Valley City, and Steven (Rita) Olufson, Wibaux, Mont.; three brothers, Don (Grace) Russell, Grants Pass, Ore., Darrell Russell, Redondo Beach, Calif., and Dale (Jean) Russell, Billings, Mont.; six sisters, Dorothy Kiser, Sebeka, Minn., Donna Burgau, Cloquet, Minn., Kay (Tom) Sorenson, Valley City, Evalene (Gary) Lee, Forest Lake, Minn., Reta (Selmer “Sam”) Jordheim, McLeod, and Joyce (Art) Elliff, Rogue River, Ore.; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Interment at Memory Gardens Cemetery, Valley City, later in the spring.

Earl D. Highness
Funeral services for Earl D. Highness, 70, West Fargo, were held on Saturday, February 1, 2003 at Faith Lutheran Church, West Fargo. Reverend Dr. Peter Schmidt officiated. Mr. Highness died on Tuesday, January 28, 2003 at Innovis Health, Fargo.
Earl D. Highness, son of Arthur and Martha (Rasmussen) Highness, was born September 17, 1932 in Fort Ransom. In 1950, he moved to Fargo where he worked for Junge Electric. He entered the U.S. Army in September 1952 and served in the Korean War. He was discharged in August 1954 and returned to Fargo.
He married Josephine Reiter in the early 1960s. Earl co-owned and operated Globe Electric in West Fargo. He also had a riding stable north of West Fargo where he raised and showed Appaloosa horses.
On January 21, 1984, he married Dolores Dittmer in Las Vegas, Nev. They made their home in West Fargo. He sold the electrical business in 1986 and semi retired. He worked part time at various jobs, including the Red River Valley Fair. Earl, also know as “DuWayne”, “Jr.”, and “Highness”, was a life member of the West Fargo VFW. He was also a member of Faith Lutheran Church and very active in the West Fargo community before retirement. He also was involved in many horse organizations including youth activities and showing.
He is survived by his wife, Dolores “Dee” Highness, West Fargo; three step-children, Todd (Shari Dittmer, Fargo, Greg (Cynthia) Dittmer, McCall, Idaho, and Kari Watkins, Temecula, Calif; six grandchildren; two sisters, Bonnie (Eugene) Christl, West Fargo, and Beth (Jack) Achter, Fergus Falls, Minn.; one brother-in-law, Marvin (Jeanette) Barstad, Leonard; and many nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers for the funeral were Mike Christl, Brian Christl, Trent Crowe, Scott Deibert, Todd Deibert and John Grunewald. Honorary pallbearers were the former Globe Electric employees and friends.
Military rites presented by the West Fargo VFW Post No. 7564.
Music was provided by organist Jane Paulson, soloist Amy Christl, with Mike Christl playing harmonica and Jeff Mooridian playing guitar.
Interment at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Fargo.
West Funeral Home, West Fargo, was in charge of arrangements.

Kamara S. Schnuerle
Funeral services for Kamara “Kami” Sue Schnuerle, 23, Bonners Ferry, Idaho, were held on January 19, 2003 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Bonners Ferry. Ms. Schnuerle died on January 11, 2003 near Roosevelt, Wash. as a result of an automobile accident.
Kamara “Kami” Sue Schnuerle was born to Richard and Kathy (Hill) Schnuerle on September 29, 1979 in Bonners Ferry, Idaho. She graduated from Bonners Ferry High School in 1998. She enrolled at the University of Idaho, Moscow, and was a member of Pi Beta Phi sorority. She graduated in December 2002 with a Bachelor of Science degree in art Education.
She is survived by her parents, Richard and Kathy (formerly of Stirum) Schnuerle, Bonners Ferry, Idaho; one sister, Nina Schnuerle, Spokane, Wash.; a half-brother, Kevin (Dawn) Schnuerle, Lewiston, Idaho; and three half-sisters, Jody (Fred) Nelson, Oakville, Wash., Linda (Mitch) Kingsland, Sandpoint, Idaho, and Sue (Tom) Atencio, Portland, Ore.; grandmothers, Ruth Schnuerle, Bonners Ferry, and Mertis Hill, Gwinner; and special friend, Mark Eberhard, Prosser, Wash. She was preceded in death by her grandfathers, John Schnuerle and Irving Hill.

Leo Kessel
Mass of Christian Burial for Leo Kessel, 88, a resident of the North Dakota Veterans Home, Lisbon, formerly of Belfield, were held on Tuesday, January 28, 2003 at St. Bernard’s Catholic church. Father Shannon Lucht officiated. Mr. Kessel died Thursday, January 23, 2003 at Veterans Affairs Medical Center of Fargo.
Leo Kessel, son of Frank and Clara (Martin) Kessel was born on November 22, 1914 in Billings County, N.D. He grew up and attended school in Billings County and later moved into Belfield. Leo worked with CCC before enlisting into the US Army in 1942, where he served at Ft. Sill, Okla. He was honorably discharged in 1943, then moved back to North Dakota and worked for various ranchers and farmers. He managed the Phillip 66 station in Belfield for several years. Leo also worked with his brothers at Kessel Buildings & Supply and more recently the Teddy Roosevelt Foundation as a carpenter.
He is survived by his son, Kenneth (Pamela) Kessel, Houston, Texas, two grandchildren; two brothers, Nick (Goldie) Kessel, Belfield, Alois (Dorothy) Kessel, Dickinson; five sisters, Agnes Halstead, Dickinson, Angeline (Harry) Romine, Agatha (Floyd) Higgins, Florence Boelow, all Portland, Ore., and Mary Olinger, Richardton; along with numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and five brothers.
William C. Blair Post #144, of Belfield, will provide military rites.
Interment at St. Bernard’s Cemetery, Belfield.

Herbert “Herb” Planteen
Funeral services for Herbert “Herb” Planteen, 86, Langford, S.D., were held on Tuesday, February 4, 2003 at the Highlanda Lutheran Church, rural Langford. Mr. Planteen died on Thursday, January 30, 2003 at the VA Hospital, Fargo.
Herbert Charles Planteen, son of Charles William and Selma (Burg) Planteen, was born April 30, 1916 at Erwin, S.D. He moved with his family to Marshall County, S.D. in 1919. He was confirmed by Reverend C.F. Shaleen at the Highlanda Lutheran Church near Langford in 1930 and was a lifetime member there. He attended school in Langford. After completing his education, Herb served in the U.S. Army during World War II from March 12, 1945 to November 28, 1946. He was assigned to the 44th Tank Battalion, 95th Fighter Tank Company with the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre of Operations. Decorations received were the Army of Occupation Medal (Japan), Asiatic-Pacific Theatre Service Medal, Victory Medal, and Marksman Badge with Rifle Bar. After returning home, Herb received his pilot’s license in 1947. He worked as a mechanic for Likness Brothers Implement, Langford.
On March 23, 1954, he married Mabel Krueger. They farmed in the Langford area and he owned and operated his own custom combining business. Mabel died on October 20, 1991. Herb continued to help area farmers and neighbors. He worked for Richard Kristofferson until retiring at the age of 80. He was a member of the American Legion and the VFW. He was making his home at the North Dakota Veterans Home, Lisbon, at the time of his death.
He is survived by two sisters-in-law, Darlene (Vernon) Johnson, Napoleon, and Betty Planteen, Grand Forks; two nieces; four nephews; and several great-nieces and great-nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Mabel Planteen; one sister, Edith Planteen; two brothers, Earl and Lloyd Planteen; one niece and one great-niece.
Pallbearers for the funeral were Lyle Planteen, Bernard Planteen, Charles Planteen, Richard Kristofferson, Neil Foote and Rudolf Swanson. Honorary pallbearers were all of Herbert’s many fiends and family members.
Music was provided by organist Karen Mikkelson and soloist Ivan Sjovall.
Military rites by Henry Osness Post #141, Langford, S.D.
Interment at Highlanda Lutheran Church Cemetery, rural Langford.
