Jacobus 'Jake' Jelden
Hildreth resident Jacobus Andreas "Jake" Jelden, 93, died Sunday, April 6, 1997, in Omaha.
Services are 11 a.m. Friday at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Hildreth with the Revs. Harold Gronstal and John Erlandson officiating. Burial will be in Hildreth Cemetery. Visitation is at Jelden-Layton Funeral Home in Hildreth.
Mr. Jelden was born Aug. 24, 1903, to Johann and Meta (Fruhling) Jelden in Ostfriesland, Germany. In 1910 he came to the United States with his family. They settled in Hildreth. He graduated from Hildreth High School in 1923. He attended Grand Island Business College for one year. He returned to Hildreth where he was a post office clerk for 15 years. During that time he took a six-month leave of absence to attend Williams Institute of Embalming at Kansas City, Kan. He received licenses as an embalmer and funeral director in 1929. In 1940 he opened the Jelden Furniture Store and in 1941 he opened the Jelden Funeral Home, which he ran for 40 years. During the 1940s and 1950s he also had the only ambulance service outside of Minden and Franklin. On June 8, 1932, he married Rose Bunger at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Ash Grove.
He was a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church, where he served on the council. He was a charter member of the Hildreth Lion's Club and was a member of the Nebraska Funeral Director's Association and Hildreth Village Board.
Survivors are his wife; one son, Dean of Crystal Lake, Ill.; one daughter, Joyce Green of Omaha; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by three brothers and one sister.

Jelden rites

Services for Hildreth resident Jake Jelden, 93, who died Sunday, April 6, 1997, in Omaha are 11 a.m. Friday at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Hildreth. Burial will be in Hildreth Cemetery. Visitation is 3-5 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Thursday at Jelden-Layton Funeral Home in Hildreth.

Mildred 'Mick' Larson
Hastings resident Mildred M. "Mick" (Evans) Larson, 93, of 411 S. Elm Ave. died Tuesday, April 8, 1997, at Good Samaritan Village Perkins Pavilion.
Rosary is 9:45 a.m. and services are 10 a.m., both Thursday at St. Cecilia's Catholic Church with Monsignor John J. McCabe officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today at Butler-Volland Funeral Home and 9 a.m. until services Thursday at the church.
Mrs. Larson was born May 5, 1903, to Harry and Anna (McNulty) Evans in Stockton, Kan. On June 17, 1924, she married Homer Larson in Concordia, Kan. He died in October 1959. After her husband's death, she moved to Scottsbluff where she worked in sales. In 1971 she moved to Concordia and in 1983 to Hastings.
She was a member of St. Cecilia's Catholic Church, its Altar Society and Catholic Daughters of America.
She is survived by one son, Robert of Cheyenne, Wyo.
She also was preceded in death by four brothers and three sisters.
Memorials may be given to St. Cecilia's Catholic Church Renovation Fund.

Carrie M. Thompson
Superior resident Carrie M. (Wells) Thompson, 89, died Monday, April 7, 1997, in Superior.
Services were to be at 2 p.m. today at Megrue-Price Funeral Home chapel in Superior with the Rev. Mark Imel officiating. Burial was planned in Evergreen Cemetery north of Superior.
Mrs. Thompson was born Oct. 28, 1907, to Guy and Alice (Van Ornam) Wells in Jewell County, Kan. She graduated from Superior High School. She attended the University of Nebraska. She taught school in the Nuckolls County school system. On May 22, 1929, she married Val Robert Thompson in Bostwick. They farmed in the Bostwick area. In 1962 they moved to Superior. Her husband died March 22, 1987.
Survivors are one son, Billie D. of Superior; one daughter, Bettie Kay Isaacson of Dodge City, Kan.; seven grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
She also was preceded in death by one son, Robert; and one brother.
Memorials may be given to the family.

Alberta Kugler
Franklin resident Alberta (Barnhill) Kugler, 85, died Tuesday, April 8, 1997, at Franklin Nursing Center in Franklin.
Services are 2 p.m. Friday at Simonson-Williams Funeral Home chapel in Red Cloud with the Rev. Frank Alexander officiating. Burial will be in Riverton Cemetery at Riverton.
Mrs. Kugler was born Aug. 27, 1911, to Frank and Grace (Clow) Barnhill in Riverton. She attended a rural Franklin country school and Riverton schools. On June 20, 1928, she married Nelson B. Kugler in Riverton. They lived in Brownsville, Texas, and Sharon Springs, Kan., before moving to Riverton. They farmed south of Riverton. In 1947 they moved into Riverton. Her husband died Dec. 31, 1976. In 1991 she moved to Franklin.
She was a member of Riverton Assembly of God Church and Ladies Missionary Society.
Survivors are five daughters, MaryLee Brownell and Dorothy Ann Cross, both of Cheyenne, Wyo., Juanita Grace Kugler of Franklin, Florence Irene Moler of Kimball and Roberta F. Bohrer of Riverton; one son, Thomas Ray of Cheyenne; one sister, Holly Tobkins of St. Paul, Minn.; one brother, Frank D. Barnhill of Franklin; 24 grandchildren; 57 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
She also was preceded in death by one grandchild and four great-grandchildren.

Bertha M.P. Thuman

Hastings resident Bertha M.P. Thuman, 91, died Tuesday, April 8, 1997, at Good Samaritan Village Villa Grace.
Services are pending with Brand-Wilson Funeral Home.

J. Orva Tolle
Hastings resident J. Orva Tolle, 87, of 1113 Pleasant St. died Monday, July 29, 1996, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital.
Services are 2 p.m. Friday at Brand-Wilson Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Allen J. Boeve officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today and 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Mr. Tolle was born Nov. 24, 1908, to Bert and Iva Abigail (Campbell) Tolle in Clay Center. On July 1, 1933, he married Hattie Rutt. He was owner of Holcomb's Hatchery in Hastings.
He was a member of Second Presbyterian Church where he served as secretary-treasurer and an elder. He was a member of National Campers and Hikers Association, Lions Club and was one of the charter members of Hastings Gem and Mineral Society.
Survivors are his wife; one daughter, Gail Ann Tolle of Hastings; one son, James of Manhattan, Kan.; two brothers, Dale Tolle of Edgar and Leonard Tolle of Wichita, Kan.; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one daughter, Bonnie Dreher; one sister and one brother.
A memorial will be established.

Bertha Hasselbacher
Red Cloud resident Bertha Leona (Hayes) Hasselbacher, 94, died Monday, July 29, 1996, at Webster County Community Hospital in Red Cloud.
Services are 10:30 a.m. Friday at First United Methodist Church in Red Cloud with the Rev. Alvin E. Trucano officiating. Burial will be in Red Cloud Cemetery. Simonson-Williams Funeral Home of Red Cloud is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Hasselbacher was born Aug. 28, 1901, to Nelson and Cora Elsie (Collins) Hayes in Chicago Heights, Ill. In 1904 she moved with her family to Clayton, Kan. In 1911 they moved to Red Cloud where she attended school. On Feb. 19, 1920, she married George L. Hasselbacher in Hastings. They lived in the Red Cloud area. Her husband died Nov. 29, 1969. She was a cook for Red Cloud Public Schools for many years.
She was a member of First United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, American Legion Auxiliary and Garfield Willing Workers.
Survivors are two sons, Leslie of Hastings and Vernon of Red Cloud; one stepgrandchild; and three stepgreat-grandchildren.
She also was preceded in death by an infant son, Allan; three sisters and three brothers.
Memorials may be given to Heritage Care Center in Red Cloud.

Clair R. Ingram
Minden resident Clair R. Ingram, 74, died Monday, July 29, 1996, at Kearney County Health Services Long Term Care Unit in Minden.
Services are 11 a.m. Thursday at Fredericksburg Lutheran Church south of Minden with the Rev. Sandra Leifeste officiating. Burial will be in Fredericksburg Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation is 3-8 p.m. today at Layton Funeral Home in Minden.
Mr. Ingram was born July 1, 1922, to Raymond and Hazel (Ferrell) Ingram in Kearney County. He attended school in Kearney County and graduated from Minden High School. He served in the U.S. Navy from January 1941 to November 1941. After a bout with rheumatic fever, he moved to Axtell. On Aug. 5, 1951, he married Delores Nielsen at Fredericksburg Lutheran Church. They lived in the Axtell area. In 1953 they moved to a farm near Minden. His health declined after complications due to heart surgery in January.
He was a member of Fredericksburg Lutheran Church where he served as deacon and trustee. He also was a member of Disabled American Veterans.
Survivors are his wife; one son, Craig of Omaha; one daughter, Christie Amen of Omaha; three brothers, Leo of Aurora, Harold of Wichita, Kan., and Ferrell of Scottsbluff; and four grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one brother.
A memorial fund has been established.

Thomas G. Piester
Former Minden resident Thomas G. "Tom" Piester, 56, of Lake Ozark, Mo., died Tuesday, July 30, 1996, at St. Luke's Hospital in Kansas City, Mo.
Memorial services are 2 p.m. Thursday at Rolling Hills Presbyterian Church in Overland Park, Kan. Services are 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Westminster United Presbyterian Church in Minden with the Rev. Dr. Terry Palmer officiating. Burial will be in Minden Cemetery at Minden. Visitation is 3-8 p.m. Friday at Layton Funeral Home in Minden.
Mrs. Piester was born Feb. 26, 1940, to George and Lois (Lemmon) Piester in Lincoln. He moved with his family to Minden in 1946. He graduated from Minden High School in 1957. He graduated from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln with a business degree. In 1959 he married Sherill Jensen. He worked for Pillsbury and later for Seaboard Milling in Kansas City, Mo. In 1966 he started his own business as a flour broker. He was engaged to be married to Joyce D. Austin of Lake Ozark.
He was a member of Rolling Hills Presbyterian Church, Shrine Club in Kansas City, Mo., and several milling organizations.
Survivors are two sons, Jay T. of Overland Park, Kan., and Mathew of Fairfax, Va.; two daughters, Cori Zerman of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Jennifer Rath of Decatur, Ill.; his father of Minden; two brothers, Kent of Houston and David of Lincoln; and six grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his mother.
Memorials may be given to Shriner's Hospital for Crippled Children or the National Arthritis Foundation.

Yancey B. Robinett
Franklin resident Yancey B. Robinett, 94, died Monday, June 29, 1996, at Franklin Nursing Center in Franklin.
Services are 10:30 a.m. Friday at Hutchins Funeral Home chapel in Franklin with the Rev. R. L. Malchow officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery at Franklin. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday and 9 a.m. until services Friday at the funeral home.
Mr. Robinett was born April 15, 1902, to Lincoln and Minnie (Cummings) Robinett on a farm south of Franklin. He attended School District 49. He was a member of Home Guard as a young man. On Feb. 14, 1925, he married Wilma Cook in Smith Center, Kan. She died May 4, 1951. On June 3, 1953, he married Opal (Carlson) Hunt in Stockton, Calif. She died April 29, 1976. He farmed in Franklin County and Smith County, Kan. After retiring from farming he drove a tank wagon truck for Mobil Service in Franklin.
He attended Marran Church, later attending Macon United Methodist Church.
Survivors are one son, Donald of Riverton; one daughter, Cleora Boyd of Stockton, Calif.; three stepsons, Arden Hunt of Stockton and Verle Hunt and Kenny Hunt, both of San Jose, Calif.; one brother, Earl of Lincoln; one sister, Laura Lewis of Lodi, Calif.; four grandchildren; 11 stepgrandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and 21 stepgreat-grandchildren.
He also was preceded in death by one stepdaughter, four brothers and three sisters.

Mary V. Roeder

Former Kenesaw resident Mary V. Roeder, 83, of Oxford, Ohio, died Monday, July 29, 1996, at Oxford View Nursing Home in Oxford.
Services are pending with Jackson-Wilson Funeral Home in Kenesaw.

Mildred E. England
Former Clay County resident Mildred Ethel (Farrall) England, 85, of Grand Island died Friday, Aug. 9, 1996, at Community Care of America in Grand Island.
Services are 10:30 a.m. Monday at United Methodist Church in Harvard with the Rev. Clarence Campbell officiating. Burial will be in Harvard Cemetery. Visitation is 2-9 p.m. Sunday at Alberding-Wilson Funeral Home in Harvard.
Mrs. England was born Dec. 24, 1910, to John W. and Olive A. (Frazell) Farrall in Harvard. She graduated from Harvard Public School in 1929 and attended Hastings College. On March 27, 1932, she married Everett C. England at her parents' home. She and her husband farmed in Clay County. Her husband died June 8, 1972.
She was a member of United Methodist Church in Harvard and First Christian Church in Harvard until it disbanded in 1972. She also was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and PEO.
Survivors are two daughters, Barbara Wilson of Arvada, Colo., and Jean Wampler of Grand Island; one brother, Harold Farrall of Hastings; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
She also was preceded in death by two sisters and four brothers.
Memorials may be given to the United Methodist Church in Harvard or donor's choice.

Linda E. Matheny
Former Mankato, Kan., resident Linda E. (Wilson) Matheny, 52, of Bloomington, Ill., died Thursday, Aug. 8, 1996, at BroMenn Regional Medical Center in Normal, Ill., after a brief illness.
Services are 2 p.m. Sunday at Metzler-Froelich Memorial Home in Bloomington with Rev. Knight W. Wells officiating. Visitation is until 7 p.m. today at the memorial home. The remains will be cremated following services.
Mrs. Matheny was born Nov. 30, 1943, to Wayne R. and Eileen (Reed) Wilson in Pensacola, Fla. She grew up in Mankato and graduated from Mankato High School in 1961. She graduated from Bethany College in Lindsborg, Kan., with a degree in fine arts. She earned a master's degree in arts from Indiana University and a master's degree in special education from Illinois State University. She married Larry R. Matheny June 1, 1982, in Bloomington. She taught special education at Deland/Weldon High School (Ill.) for four years and for the past six years at Heyworth High School in Heyworth, Ill.
She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Bloomington.
Survivors are her husband, of Bloomington; parents, of Mankato, Kan.; one step-daughter, Chris Lawson of Mt. Prospect, Ill.; one brother, Ed Wilson of St. Louis, Mo.; and one sister, Sandra Olson of Atlanta, Ga.
Memorials may be given to Heyworth High School Beautification Fund, Heyworth, Ill.

Ralph C. Katzberg
Hastings resident Ralph C. Katzberg, 83, of 3135 S. Baltimore Ave. died Thursday, Aug. 8, 1996, at Bryan Memorial Hospital in Lincoln.
Services will be 2 p.m. Monday at Zion Lutheran Church with Rev. Richard A. Kothe officiating. Burial with military rites will be in Parkview Cemetery. Butler-Volland Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Katzberg was born March 12, 1913, to August and Anna E (Wirfel) Katzberg in Prosser. He graduated from Prosser High School and attended Pratt Business College for two years in Hastings. He began working for the bank in Prosser and later for First National Bank in Hastings. He served in the U.S. Army from 1942-1945. He was a master sergeant. He moved to Hastings from Prosser in 1952. He was executive officer for Adams County Agriculture Soil Conservation Service for 20 years, retiring in 1972. On Aug. 21, 1985, he married Louise C. Pavelka.
He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Eagles and American Legion. He was a life member of VFW and DAV.
He was preceded in death by four brothers.
He is survived by his wife.
Memorials may be given to Zion Lutheran Church.

John B. Gallagher
Blue Hill resident John B. Gallagher, 91, died Friday, Aug. 9, 1996, in Blue Hill.
Services are 1:30 p.m. Monday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in York with the Rev. James Divis officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation begins at 5 p.m. Saturday at Metz Mortuary in York. A rosary is 7 p.m. Sunday at Metz Chapel.
Mr. Gallagher was born Sept. 18, 1904, at Dernahemrick, Rossinver, Co. Leitrim, Ireland to John and Maria (Cullen) Gallagher. On Jan. 18, 1937, he married Rose Carney in Ireland. She died September 1988.
In 1948, the couple moved to York where he worked for E.S. Clarke Lumber & Coal. Mr. Gallagher was a member of St. Joesph's Catholic Church.
He was preceded in death by his wife, a brother and seven sisters.
He is survived by two daughters, Rosaleen Gianakos of Blue Hill and Bernadette Cunningham of Petersburg; one son, Sean Gallagher of Greeley, Colo.; one sister, Frances Gallagher of Bundoran, Co., Leitrim, Ireland; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Velora Picha
Hebron resident Velora Picha, 85, died Thursday, Aug. 8, 1996, in Hebron.
Services and burial will be 10 a.m. Monday at Alexandria Public Cemetery in Alexandria with the Rev. Bruce W. Berggren officiating. Visitation is 5-9 p.m. today and noon to 8 p.m. Sunday at Price Funeral in Hebron.
Mrs. Picha was born Jan. 11, 1911, to Louis and Maude (Hawkins) Cook in Helvey. She was baptized Presbyterian and attended school in Alexandria. She married Joe Picha. She was a resident at Blue Valley Lutheran Care Home in Hebron.
She was preceded in death by her husband, two brothers and three sisters.
She is survived by a son, Ronald Picha of Portland, Ore.; and a brother, Orville C. Cook of Reynolds.
Memorials may be made to the family in care of Orville Cook, Box 5, Reynolds, NE, 68429.

David L. Bowman Jr.
Former Hastings resident David L. Bowman Jr., 58, of Eau Claire, Wis., died Monday, July 22, 1996, at Luther Hospital in Eau Claire.
A public Masonic service was July 25 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Eau Claire, followed by a memorial service with the Rev. Mary Jorgerson officiating. Fuller-Speckien Funeral Home of Eau Claire was in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Bowman was born Sept. 29, 1937, in Pittsburgh, Pa. He graduated from Allegheny High School in Pittsburgh in 1955. He married Carol Capenos of Sewickley, Pa., on July 19, 1957. He served in the U.S. Air Force Security Service Communications Intelligence from 1956-1960. He was in sales for 36 years in Pennsylvania, Michigan, Nebraska, Texas and Wisconsin. He lived in Hastings from 1983-88 and 1994-1996. He was national sales manager for Hastings Industries. He moved to Eau Claire in April. At the time of his death, he was employed by Titan Air of Osseo, Wis.
He was a lifelong member of the Lutheran church, a former member of the Elks in Pennsylvania and Nebraska. He was a member of Rockford Lodge No. 246, Michigan, and Scottish Rite Valley of Grand Rapids, Mich., and a member of the Saladin Shrine of Kentwood, Mich. He was a member of the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air Conditioning Engineers.
Survivors are his wife; two daughters, Colleen Biggerstaff and Tammi Ferguson, both of Texas; parents, David L. Sr. and Carmen Bowman of North Port, Fla., and Harry and Margaret Tabor Werner of Cannonsburgh, Pa.; one son, David of Texas; one brother, Donald of Wexford, Pa.; two sisters, Barbara Shigo of West Covina, Calif. and Kathy Vitullo of Oakdale, Pa.; two step-brothers, Gerald Werner of Glenshaw, Pa., and Harry Werner Jr. of Jacksonville, Fla.; and six grandchildren.
