U.S., Obituary Collection, 1930-Current

Harvey J. Stuber

RAVENNA -- Harvey J. Stuber, 96, of Ravenna, died Friday, Jan. 15, 1999, at the Good Samaritan Center in Ravenna.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church in Ravenna. Rev. Rose Bartleson will officiate. Burial will be in the Sodtown Cemetery. Visitation will be at 9 a.m. Monday until service time at the church. Memorials are suggested to the Zion United Methodist Church or the Good Samaritan Center.

Rasmussen Mortuary in Ravenna is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Stuber was born July 22, 1902, in Buffalo County to William G. and Louise (Runge) Stuber. He was educated in rural Buffalo County and at Kearney State College. He worked in Shelton at a grocery store for two years.

He married Minnie Wilks on June 27, 1925, at Shelton. The couple lived on a farm near Ravenna. He farmed and operated a trucking business until retiring and moving to Ravenna in 1984.

He was a member of the Zion United Methodist Church, served on the Sodtown School Board, Cherry Creek Township Board and the Election Board.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Charles of Raleigh, N.C.; daughter, Ramona Steel of Tigard, Ore.; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Evelyn Quiter

OMAHA -- Evelyn M. Quiter, 89, of Omaha died Thursday, Jan. 14, 1999, at Mercy Care Center in Omaha.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Albion. Father Frank Baumert will officiate. Burial will be in the St. Michael's Catholic cemetery in Albion.

A wake will be at 7 p.m. Monday at the John A. Gentleman Westside Chapel in Omaha. A wake will also be at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Levander Funeral Home in Albion.

Grace Rombach

S. Grace Rombach, 91, of Park Place Nursing Center in Grand Island died Saturday, Dec. 20, 1997, at the nursing center.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary's Cathedral. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Monday at the Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home with a 7:30 p.m. rosary. The family will receive friends from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home Monday.

Memorials are suggested to the St. Mary's Restoration Fund or the family's choice.

Mrs. Rombach was born on May 6, 1906, at Rogers, Ark., to Robert G. and Minnie (Ashbranner) Martin. She moved with her family to a farm at Haskell, Okla., when she was a child. She was educated in rural schools at Haskell.

She married Louis R. Rombach on Oct. 30, 1928, at Haskell. In the spring of 1929, they moved to Grand Island. She assisted her husband in their trucking business until their retirement. Her husband died April 10, 1985. In 1988, she moved to her daughter's home until June 1995, when she moved to Park Place Nursing Center.

She was a member of the church.

She enjoyed fishing, crocheting, knitting, crossword puzzles and watching television.

Survivors include her daughter, Betty (Mrs. Dick) Jolkowski of Grand Island; her son, Paul of Ogallala; 18 grandchildren; 63 great-grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; nine great great-grandchildren; and a sister, Lorena McMahon of Tulsa, Okla.

She was preceded in death by her husband; a daughter, Roberta Blair; a grandson, Michael Jolkowski; four great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; her twin brother, Gray Martin; two brothers, Olan Martin and Dale Martin; and three sisters, Winnie Finke, Verda Rombach and Ruby Holmes.

Wanda Biram

OCONTO -- Wanda L. Biram, 75, of Oconto, died Saturday, Dec. 20, 1997, at the Tri-County Hospital in Lexington after a short illness.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Govier Brothers Chapel in Broken Bow with the Rev. Larry Klein officiating. Burial will be in the Oconto Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to the Oconto Cemetery.

Mrs. Biram was born on Oct. 3, 1922, in Oconto to Fred and Anna (Buckner) Thurman. She grew up and was educated in the Lomax community, and graduated from Eddyville High School. She attended Kearney State Teachers College and taught rural school for one year. She then worked for the U.S. Postal Service for 25 years.

She married Ted Biram on July 12, 1950, at Valentine. Following her retirement from the postal service, the couple worked as custodians at Oconto Public Schools.

She continued her yardwork and care of the Oconto Cemetery, both of which were important to her.

Survivors include her brother, Dr. Glen Thurman of Albuquerque, N.M.

She was preceded in death by her husband.

Wilma Ruge

CENTRAL CITY -- Wilma Ruge, 69, of Central City, died Sunday, Dec. 21, 1997, at Community Care in Central City.

Services are pending with the Solt Funeral Home in Central City.

Mabel Smith

ALBION -- Mabel L. Smith, 91, of Albion, died Saturday, Dec. 20, 1997, at the Wolf Memorial Good Samaritan Home in Albion.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the First United Methodist Church in Albion with the Rev. Eric Biehl officiating. Burial will be in the Sunset cemetery at Cedar Rapids. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Levander Funeral Home in Albion.

Connie Walkup

NORTH LOUP -- Connie Walkup, 64, of North Loup, died Saturday, Dec. 20, 1997, at the Valley County Hospital in Ord.

Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the North Loup United Methodist Church with the Rev. Melanie Adams officiating. Her body was cremated, and burial will be at a later date at Hillside cemetery in North Loup. Ord Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials are suggested to the North Loup Rescue Unit.

Mrs. Walkup was born on Aug. 26, 1933, at North Loup to George and Erma Mae (Smith) Eberhart. She was educated at North Loup and graduated from North Loup High School in 1951.

She married Neil Layer on June 17, 1951. They farmed in the Mira Valley area of Valley County for a few years. The couple then lived in England, Newfoundland, New Mexico and Kansas for 15 years while he served in the U.S. Air Force. In New Mexico, they owned and operated a convenience store. He died in 1985, and she moved back to North Loup. She married Gordon Dean Walkup on May 14, 1988, and the couple made their home in North Loup.

She enjoyed flowers and plants, gardening and crocheting.

Survivors include her husband of North Loup; one son, Robert Layer of Ruidosa, N.M.; two daughters, Sharon (Mrs. Ken) Miles of Burlingame, Kan., and Julie (Mrs. Keith) Davis of Emporia, Kan.; three stepdaughters, Vivian Walkup of Ord, Patricia Walkup of Scotia and Joy (Mrs. Richard) Krohnlom of Springfield; two stepsons, Gregory Walkup of Oxnard, Calif., and Carl Walkup of Ozark, Mo.; seven grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; five step great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Jolene Bugay of Columbus, Gwen Lockhart of North Loup and Darlene Schwieger of North Loup.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband; an infant son; a sister, Sharon Loften; and an infant sister.

John French

John S. French, 90, of Grand Island died Sunday, Nov. 15, 1998, at St. Francis Medical Center.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home. The Revs. Gretchen Diers and Doug Stensby will officiate. Burial will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to Messiah Lutheran Church or to the donor's choice.

Mr. French was born on April 14, 1908, at Lime Springs, Iowa, to Willis and Nettie (Borland) French. When he was about 4 years old, the family moved to Worthington, Minn., where he grew up. He graduated from Worthington High School in 1927.

He worked for an electrical contractor for a number of years. He also attended Grand Island Business College.

He married Lucille H. Luhn on Dec. 25, 1934. They lived in Grand Island until he went to work for the U.S. government in Washington, D.C. He worked for the government until retiring in May 1970 as buildings manager at the Public Building Service.

After his retirement, he and his wife moved to Florida, where they lived for a number of years. He and his wife liked to travel and visited almost every state in the continental United States.

The couple finally returned to Grand Island in 1977 to live. Mrs. French died on July 1, 1990.

Mr. French married Clara Augustin Niemoth on July 31, 1993. They lived in Grand Island. Mr. French had lived at Tiffany Square Care Center since July 1997.

He was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church, where he had served as secretary, bookkeeper and in other areas. He also was a member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees.

Survivors include his wife, Clara; one stepdaughter, Karen Niedfelt of Grand Island; one stepson, David Niemoth of Doniphan; six step grandchildren; two step great-grandchildren; and one brother, Charles M. French of Sunny Hills, Fla.
