U.S., Obituary Collection, 1930-Current

Eleanor Hoppe

AURORA -- Eleanor M. Hoppe, 92, of Hamilton Manor in Aurora died Monday, Jan. 5, 1998, at the home.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Grand Island. The Rev. Marty Egging will officiate. Burial will be in Cedarview cemetery at Doniphan.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m., with a Christian wake service at 7 p.m., Wednesday at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home.

Memorials are suggested to the Foster Grandparents Program.

Mrs. Hoppe was born on Jan. 28, 1905, in St. Bernard to Joseph and Elizabeth (Korth) Buettner. She grew up in the rural Cedar Rapids area and attended rural school.

She married Walter Hoppe on June 1, 1926, in Cedar Rapids. They lived in Cedar Rapids, where they operated a restaurant.

They lived in several other places, including Hastings. They moved to Grand Island for a time, then to Doniphan and back to Grand Island in 1973. Mr. Hoppe died in 1974.

Mrs. Hoppe lived at Hamilton Manor for five years.

She was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, the Catholic Daughters, the Quilting Ladies of the church and the Altar Society.

Survivors include a daughter, Betty (Mrs. Burdett) Riese of Grand Island; a son, Robert of Springfield; 14 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Evelyn Schwensen of Minneapolis.

She was preceded in death by seven brothers and two sisters.

E. Ray Mayo

GIBBON -- E. Ray Mayo, 88, of Gibbon died Sunday, Jan. 4, 1998, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Godberson Mortuary in Gibbon. The Rev. Robert Flynn will officiate. Burial will be in the Gibbon Riverside Cemetery.

Memorials are suggested to the Gibbon Emergency Unit Fund.

Mr. Mayo was born on Feb. 27, 1909, in Mesic, N.C., to S. Cabot and Cora (Gaskins) Mayo. He grew up there and graduated from Hobucken High School. He worked for a short time at an auto assembly plant in Detroit and then returned to Mesic.

He married Neva Lincoln. They lived in Mesic, where he worked as a fisherman and with the Works Progress Administration. He worked as a roofer on military bases during World War II. He then became a farmer and truck gardener until retiring in 1982, when they moved to Gibbon to be near their son and family.

Survivors include his wife; one son, Ray "Duffy" of Gibbon; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Mae Holloway of Newbern, N.C., and Fae Whealton of Mesic, N.C.

He was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters.

Bruno Neidhardt

ALBION -- Bruno "Boots" Friedrick Neidhardt, 81, of Albion died Sunday, Jan. 4, 1998, at his home.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Zion Lutheran Church in Albion. The Rev. Brian Bergum and intern Annette Minderman will officiate. Private family burial will be in Rose Hill cemetery at Albion.

Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Levander Funeral Home in Albion.

Mr. Neidhardt was born on May 25, 1916, on a farm northwest of Tilden to Henry and Anna (Hansen) Neidhardt. He attended country school near Tilden until he was 11 years old, when his family moved west of Albion. He graduated from the eighth grade at Denison District 24 School.

He married Dorothy Kozera on Dec. 7, 1941, at Red Cloud. They lived and farmed west of Albion for four years until moving to a farm home north of Albion.

He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Albion, where he served as a deacon. He was a member of the Boone County Fair Board, treasurer of School District 7 and held other school offices.

Survivors include his wife; three sons, Randy and Scott, both of Albion, and Larry of Kearney; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two brothers, Otto of Albion and Alfred of Lewiston, Idaho; and two sisters, Elizabeth (Mrs. Elmer) Fisher of Omaha and Irma (Mrs. Alfred) Riecks of Albion.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Herbert; one sister, Wilma; and a granddaughter. One sister, Wilma; and a granddaughter.

Alvin White

Alvin W. White, 84, of Grand Island died Friday, Jan. 2, 1998, at Tiffany Square Center in Grand Island.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Gollaher Chapel of Trinity United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jocelyn Tupper officiating. Burial will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Monday at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home in Grand Island.

Memorials are suggested to the American Parkinson's Disease Foundation or Trinity United Methodist Church.

Mr. White was born on March 9, 1913, to Willard and Hazel (Jenkins) White at Alda. He grew up and was educated at Alda Public Schools. In 1933, he moved to Grand Island and worked for Grand Island Livestock Company. He later worked for Consolidated Mills, Consumer Public Power and Schuff's Refrigeration. He then obtained his master electrician's license and began working for the City of Grand Island's light department.

He married Jane B. Krehmke on June 12, 1938, at Grand Island. The couple lived in Grand Island. He continued to work for the City of Grand Island, until his hobby of restoring antique cars became a full-time job. He restored antique cars until his health began to fail. His wife died on Sept. 16, 1997.

He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Horseless Carriage Club of America and the Coffee Club at Owl Auto Parks.

He enjoyed restoring antique cars.

Survivors include one daughter, Terri (Mrs. Paul) Hongsermeier of Grand Island; one son, Todd J. White of Grand Island; one grandson; and two brothers, Wesley White and Don White, both of Grand Island.

He was preceded in death by his wife, and a brother, Billy.

Dale Barr

WOLBACH -- Dale L. Barr, 58, of Wolbach died Friday, Jan. 2, 1998, at the Greeley Care Home in Greeley.

Services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at the United Methodist Church in Wolbach with the Rev. Delbert King officiating. Burial will be in the Hillside cemetery in Wolbach.

Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the church. Memorials are suggested to the family. McIntyre-Jacobsen Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Barr was born Aug. 24, 1939, at Cushing to Alvin and Nellie (Wagner) Barr. He attended District 23 school south of Wolbach and graduated as valedictorian from Wolbach High School in 1957.

After his schooling, he farmed with his father south of Wolbach. He married Vonnie Cotant on June 15, 1969, in Grand Island. The couple continued to farm south of Wolbach, where he lived the rest of his life.

Mr. Barr was active in community activities, in his church and he enjoyed all sporting events. He was a member of the United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Men, Community Club and the Booster Club, all of Wolbach. He was a lifetime member of the Howard-Greeley Farmer Union.

Survivors include his wife, three sons, Rodney, Randall and Roger; his mother, Nellie; a grandchild, a sister, Sue (Mrs. Wayne) Killinger, all of Wolbach.

He was preceded in death by his father and one sister, Marlene Lindsley.

Astrid Larson

HORDVILLE -- Astrid M. Larson, 88, of Hordville died on Saturday, Jan. 3, 1998, at Midwest Covenant Home in Stromsburg.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the First Baptist Church in Hordville with the Rev. Darryl Keeney officiating. Burial will be in the Hordville Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Solt Funeral Home in Central City.

Mrs. Larson was born in Polk County on April 14, 1909, to Gust and Helga (Utter) Johnson. She attended school at District 45 and District 46 in Polk County. She lived in Polk County and Hamilton County as a young girl, with the exception of six years when she lived in Boone County, Iowa.

She married Irvin G. Larson in Stromsburg on Nov. 22, 1934. They lived on a farm in Polk County and then moved to Hordville, where they farmed for 40 years. After her husband's death on Dec. 1, 1982, Mrs. Larson moved into Hordville. She had been at Midwest Covenant Home in Stromsburg since October.

Mrs. Larson attended the First Baptist Church in Hordville and she was a member of the Women's Mission Society of the church. She enjoyed sewing, baking, gardening, crocheting and quilting.

Survivors include a son, Wallace of Stromsburg; a daughter, Marlene (Mrs. Frank) Spires of Stromsburg; five grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband; two sisters, Esther Stark and Helga Widga; and an infant brother, Carl Johnson.

Charles Werner

NORTH LOUP -- Charles Werner, 74, of North Loup died Saturday, Jan. 3, 1998, at the Valley County Hospital in Ord.

Funeral services are pending. Ord Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
