U.S., Obituary Collection, 1930-Current

Lucile Korth

HASTINGS -- Lucile Josephine Korth, 84, of Hastings, formerly of Cedar Rapids, died Thursday, April 22, 1999, at Good Samaritan Village in Hastings.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids. The Rev. Ralph Steffensmeier will officiate. Burial will be in St. Anthony's Catholic cemetery in Cedar Rapids.

Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m., with a rosary at 3 p.m. and wake service at 7 p.m., Sunday at Levander Funeral Home in Cedar Rapids. Visitation will resume from 8 to 10 a.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to the church or St. Gregory the Great Seminary.

Miss Korth was born on April 28, 1914, on a farm north of Cedar Rapids to Peter J. and Anna (Lachnit) Korth. She was educated at St. Anthony's Elementary School and graduated from Cedar Rapids High School. Following graduation, she worked at Steffas Grocery Store in Cedar Rapids.

She then moved to Lincoln, where she lived for 33 years. She worked as a bookkeeper at the Campus Book Store in Lincoln. She later returned to Cedar Rapids and worked as the sacristan for St. Anthony's Catholic Church for a number of years. She moved to Hastings in 1996.

She was a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church. She served as commission chairwoman on the Altar Society, was a member of the church choir and served as a CCD instructor.

Survivors include a brother, Gerry Korth of Genoa, Ill.; and a sister, Hilda Bogner of Grand Island.

She was preceded in death by five brothers, Arnold, Jack, Richard, Alphons and Fritz; and three sisters, Eleanor, Mary and Helen.

Herman Schmadeke

ALBION -- Herman E. Schmadeke, 88, of Albion died Thursday, April 22, 1999, at the Mid-Nebraska Lutheran Home in Newman Grove.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Zion Lutheran Church in Albion. The Rev. Brian Bergum will officiate. Burial will be in Rose Hill cemetery in Albion.

Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Monday at Levander Funeral Home in Albion.

'Tab' Senn

BARTLETT -- Francis "Tab" Marion Senn, 88, of Bartlett died Friday, April 23, 1999, at the Good Samaritan Nursing Center in Syracuse.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the United Methodist Church in Bartlett. The Rev. Cynthia Altstadt will officiate. Burial will be in the Bartlett City Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at Eberle-Hitchcock Funeral Home in Burwell.

Memorials are suggested to the church or the nursing home.

June Alfred

LEWISTON, Ind. -- June Alfred, 72, of Lewiston, Ind., died Tuesday, April 20, 1999, at St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center in Lewiston after complications from a stroke.

Mrs. Alfred was cremated. Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The Rev. Jim Keyser will officiate.

Mrs. Alfred was born on June 15, 1926, in Kearney to Orva P. and Tracey P. (Whitaker) McCurdy. They moved to Grand Island, where she attended school.

She married Keith E. Alfred on Aug. 19, 1944. They moved to California in 1956. She worked with the Visiting Nurses Association. They moved to Lewiston in 1984 after she had a stroke. She had been in ill health since then.

She enjoyed bowling, fishing and cooking.

Survivors include her husband; two sons, Jerry Alfred of Clayton, Ind., and Dave Alfred of Dayton, Nev.; one daughter, Marianne Hastings of Lewiston, Ind.; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

James 'Shorty' Thompson

MANKATO, Kan. -- James Arthur "Shorty" Thompson, 90, of Mankato, Kan., died Thursday, April 22, 1999, at Jewell County Hospital in Mankato.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Melby Mortuary in Mankato with the Rev. Thaddeus Hinkle officiating. Burial will be in Sweet Home cemetery in Lebanon, Kan.

Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Saturday, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday and 9 a.m. to service time Monday at the mortuary.

Memorials are suggested to the James Arthur Thompson Memorial Fund in care of Esther Ortman, Rural Route, Mankato, KS 66956.

Mr. Thompson was born on June 20, 1908, at Esbon, Kan., to Dutton and Cordellia (Armatyse) Thompson.

He married Florence Esther Ahrens on Feb. 22, 1931, at Concordia, Kan. He lived in the Esbon and Lebanon area, at Cortland and Hardy in Nebraska and then in Mankato. Mr. Thompson worked as a service station attendant. Mrs. Thompson died on June 26, 1991.

Survivors include three daughters, Esther Ortman and Beverly Weir, both of Mankato, and Carla Hartman of Beloit, Kan.; a son, Charley Thompson of Grand Island; 17 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandsons; and a brother, Ralph Thompson of Casper, Wyo.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by four sons and a daughter.

Ralph Brummund

Ralph H. Brummund, 73, of the Grand Island Veterans Home, formerly of St. Paul, died Thursday, April 22, 1999, at St. Francis Medical Center.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Christ Lutheran Church in St. Paul. The Rev. Robert Paulson will officiate. Burial will be in Elmwood cemetery at St. Paul with military honors at the graveside.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Jacobsen Funeral Home in St. Paul.

Memorials are suggested to the family's choice.

Mr. Brummund was born on Jan. 13, 1926, at Bancroft to Martin and Laurena (Bargmann) Brummund. He was educated at Bancroft and graduated from high school there. He grew up on the family farm at Bancroft and farmed with his family after his education.

He served in Japan with the U.S. Army during World War II from February 1945 to October 1945. After his discharge, he farmed near Bancroft and worked in a gas station.

He married Betty McLeod on Feb. 11, 1949, at Oakland. The couple first lived in Oakland, where he began working for the Nebraska Department of Roads. They later moved to Bancroft. In 1955, the couple moved to St. Paul, where he worked for the Department of Roads as project engineer for 25 years.

Mrs. Brummund died on July 31, 1985. Mr. Brummund continued to live in St. Paul until moving to the Grand Island Veterans Home, where he lived for a number of years.

He was a member of Carl Mogensen Post 119 and Christ Lutheran Church of St. Paul. His hobbies were bowling and puzzles.

Survivors include two sons, Gregory of Grand Island and Jason of Wolbach; 11 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and one sister, Mrs. Dolores (Mrs. Jack) Vogt of Bancroft.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by two sons, David and Randall.

Phil Downs

Phil R. Downs, 51, of Grand Island died Thursday, April 22, 1999, at his home.

Services are pending with Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home.

'Lena' Gulzow

Carolyn K. "Lena" Gulzow, 91, of Grand Island died Thursday, April 22, 1999, at St. Francis Medical Center.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Pauls Lutheran Church. The Rev. Joel Schroeder will officiate. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home.

James Honeycutt

James T. Honeycutt, 73, of Grand Island died Thursday, April 22, 1999, at St. Francis Medical Center.

No services are planned. Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Honeycutt was born on Aug. 2, 1925, at Cozahome, Ark., to Burt and Lana (Downs) Honeycutt. He grew up at Cozahome. He was educated in Cozahome and Marshall, Ark.

He married Inez Leetch on Aug. 3, 1978, at Hastings. Shortly after their marriage, they moved to Grand Island, where he worked for Wilson Concrete Co. and later for Ore-Ida as a production worker.

He was a member of the Church of God. He enjoyed fishing, playing horseshoes and listening to music.

Survivors include six sons; six daughters; 22 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Charlene Johnson of Loup City.

He was preceded in death by one son and a great-granddaughter.
