U.S., Obituary Collection, 1930-Current

Edward Kearns

WAUNETA -- Edward D. Kearns, 59, of Wauneta died Friday, May 14, 1999, at the University Hospital in Denver.

Mr. Kearns was cremated.

Services will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday at the Wauneta Church of Christ with Randy Hayes officiating. Burial will follow in Riverside cemetery in Wauneta.

A memorial has been established in his memory.

Liewer Funeral Home in Wauneta is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Kearns was born on Feb. 28, 1940, at North Loup to Orus and Cordelia (Carr) Kearns. He grew up and attended school in North Loup.

He was inducted into the U.S. Army and served during the Vietnam War. After his discharge, he completed his high school education in Lincoln. He began a career in law enforcement at Seward in 1965. He served in many communities before becoming a detective in Kearney. He attended FBI school in Virginia. In 1991, he became chief of police in Wauneta, where he and his family lived. He had also served as chief deputy sheriff.

His hobbies included raising horses and watching sporting events.

Survivors include his wife; three sons, Markham Kearns of Las Cruces, N.M., and Tim and Todd, both at home; three daughters, Kristine Kearns of Guernville, Calif., and Jennifer and Julie, both at home; three grandchildren; and two sisters, Cecelia Kimball of Gult, Calif., and Pauline (Mrs. Harry) Burson of Grand Island.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Elmer; and a sister, Donna Pahl.

Gary Onnen

NORFOLK -- Gary L. Onnen, 43, of Norfolk died Saturday, May 15, 1999, of a medical condition at BryanLGH Medical Center East in Lincoln.

Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Home for Funerals in Norfolk with the Rev. Lee Weander officiating. Inurnment will be at a later date.

There will be no visitation.

Survivors include one son, Christopher of Osmond; one daughter, Sheri Onnen of Grand Island; his mother, of Grand Island; three brothers, Donald Onnen Jr. of Lincoln, Dennis Onnen of Grand Island and Greg Onnen of Lincoln; and two sisters, Joyce Onnen of Kingman, Ariz., and Jan Robinson of Grand Island.

He was preceded in death by his father.

Thelma Bailey

Thelma L. Bailey, 91, of Grand Island died Friday, May 14, 1999, at the Lakeview Rehab Nursing Center in Grand Island.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the chapel of the Kleine Funeral Home. The Rev. Jim Tooley will officiate. Cremation will take place after the services.

Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to the Lakeview Rehab Nursing Center.

Carl Burney

Carl C. Burney, 95, of Grand Island, formerly of Bradshaw, died Saturday, May 15, 1999, in Grand Island.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Bradshaw United Methodist Church. The Revs. Jaclyn Hoy and Vernon Rice will officiate. Burial will be in the Plainfield cemetery in Bradshaw.

Visitation will be at 5 p.m. Monday at Metz Mortuary in York.

Memorials are suggested to the Bradshaw United Methodist Church.

Mr. Burney was born Dec. 12, 1903, at Everton, MO. to Christopher C. and Martha (Howell) Burney. He farmed in Bradshaw.

He married Irene E. Johnson on Feb. 2, 1927, in Nebraska City.

He was an active member of the Bradshaw United Methodist church, and a former director of the ASC office.

Survivors include one son, Duane Burney of Grand Island; two daughters, Virginia Bowman of Grand Island and Darlene Bowman of Bradshaw; nine grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife; six brothers; and six sisters.

Earle Karle

Earle H. Karle, 79, of Grand Island, died Saturday, May 15, 1999, at St. Francis Medical Center.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Peace Lutheran Church in Grand Island. The Rev. William Voelker will officiate. Burial will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, with the family greeting friends from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to Peace Lutheran Church or to the Lutheran Hour.

Mr. Karle was born May 24, 1919, at Grand Island to John and Nodine (Quemette) Karle. He graduated from Grand Island Senior High in 1937.

He entered the U.S. Army on Feb. 19, 1941, serving during World War II. He was honorably discharged in September 1945.

He married Viola Tagge on Jan. 14, 1951, in Grand Island.

Mr. Karle farmed from 1945 until March 1992, when he retired.

He was a member of Peace Lutheran Church and the American Legion. He enjoyed fishing and spending time with his family.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Bob Karle of Grand Island; a daughter, Pat Anderson of Kearney; four grandchildren; two brothers, Bruce Karle of Grand Island and Allyn Karle of Grand Island; and two sisters, Floy Ellsworth of Grand Island and Ruth Powell of Alda.

He was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters.

Bernhardt Reher

Bernhardt F. "Barney" Reher, 87, of Grand Island died Sunday, May 16, 1999, at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Grand Island.

Services are pending with the Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home.

Hilda Berggren

ST. PAUL -- Hilda R. Berggren, 91, of St. Paul died Sunday, May 16, 1999, at the Heritage Living Center in St. Paul.

The Jacobsen Funeral Home of St. Paul is in charge of arrangements.

Margaret Chramosta

RAVENNA -- Margaret Chramosta, 77, of Ravenna died Saturday, May 15, 1999, at the Good Samaritan Center in Ravenna.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Ravenna. The Rev. Rod Pruss will officiate. Burial will be in the St. Wenceslaus cemetery south of Ravenna. Rasmussen Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

Christian wake services will be at 7 p.m. Monday at the church.

Mrs. Chramosta was born June 24, 1921, in Buffalo County to Joseph and Gertrude (Fisher) Kriha. She graduated from Ravenna High School and taught school in rural Buffalo County.

She married Edward Chramosta on Sept. 30, 1941, at St. Wenceslaus south of Ravenna. The couple made their home on a farm near Gibbon. Mr. Chramosta died March 24, 1993, and Mrs. Chramosta moved to Ravenna in June 1996.

She was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Ravenna, Altar Society, Jolly Ten Card Club and Antelope Extension Club. She was a Red Cross Bloodmobile volunteer for 40 years.

Survivors include one son, Ed Chramosta, Jr. of Ravenna; two daughters, Delores Eaves of Apple Valley, Minn. and Dorothy Jean Klemme of LeMars, Iowa; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one brother, Leonard.
