U.S., Obituary Collection, 1930-Current

Kenneth Amos

SARGENT -- Kenneth O. Amos, 71, of Sargent died Tuesday, Dec. 8, 1998, at his home.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Evangelical Free Church in Sargent. The Rev. Walt Collins will officiate. Burial will be in the Dry Valley cemetery south of Sargent.

There will be no visitation. Rhoad Funeral Home in Sargent is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials are suggested to the Valley County Hospice or the church.

Mr. Amos was born on May 24, 1927, in rural Custer County south of Sargent to Otto and Edna (Oliver) Amos. He attended country school at Dry Valley and Sargent High School.

He enlisted in the U.S. Army on Oct. 31, 1950, served in the Korean War and was discharged on Oct. 16, 1952, with the rank of sergeant. After his discharge, he moved to Comstock.

He married Frances Gutbrod in November 1953 at Sheridan, Ore. They moved to California, where he worked as a planer foreman for Sierra Pacific Industries for 15 years. He moved back to Sargent in 1977.

He married Mahala Glause Thompson on Aug. 10, 1980. He worked at Amos Sanitation in Sargent until he retired.

Mr. Amos was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Taylor and attended the Evangelical Free Church in Sargent.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Diana Martin and Laurie Orlandi of Eureka, Calif.; three stepdaughters, Joyce Rehnelt of Sargent, Kathy Crawford of Kearney and Judy Colfack of Paige; one stepson, James Thompson of Hastings; 14 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; four brothers, Gordon of Blocksburg, Calif., Jerald of Long Pine, Marvin of Broken Bow and Leonard of Sargent; and a half brother, Donald Spencer of Florence, Ore.

He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Barbara; and one brother, Otto Amos Jr.

Norman Warnke

KEARNEY -- Norman Clarence Warnke, 78, of Kearney died Friday, Dec. 4, 1998, at his home.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Zion Methodist Church near Ravenna. The Rev. Rose Bartleson will officiate. Burial will be at 3 p.m. Thursday in Lincoln Memorial Park cemetery at Lincoln with military honors at graveside.

O'Brein-Straatmann-Apfel Funeral Home of Kearney is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials are suggested to the Alzheimer's Association.

Mr. Warnke was born on June 30, 1920, to Henry and Margratha Warnke. He and his family lived in and around Fairbury until they moved to Lincoln when he was about 12.

Mr. Warnke graduated from Lincoln High School and began work for Boomer's Printing Co. After high school, he was drafted to play baseball for the St. Louis Cardinals but declined.

He enlisted in the Navy on Aug. 10, 1942, served as a pharmacist mate aboard the USS Pierce in the South Pacific and received several commendations.

He married Marilyn Kline on Sept. 18, 1942, in Lincoln.

Mr. Warnke worked for Boomer's Printing again after his discharge from the Navy on Sept. 11, 1945. He worked as a lithographer until June 1961, when he moved his family to Austin, Texas.

In Austin, he became a representative for what is now the Graphic Communications International Union. He was instrumental in organizing many printing companies. He moved to Fredericksburg, Va., in 1971 to become director of organizing for the union nationwide.

He retired from the union in 1983 and moved to Ravenna to raise game birds, grow roses and garden. He and his wife moved to Kearney in September 1997.

He began raising game birds in Lincoln and formed the Nebraska Game Breeders Association. He had a lifelong interest in baseball. He was a member of Zion United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Michael of Columbia, S.C., and Steven Warnke of Austin, Texas; three daughters, Rosemary (Mrs. John) Roward of Vancouver, Wash., Carol (Mrs. Tom) Rainey of Fort Worth, Texas, and Lorene (Mrs. John) Radolinski of Fredericksburg, Va.; and 10 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Ernest and Walter.

Gladys McKnight

KENT, Wash. -- Gladys M. McKnight, 89, of Kent, Wash., formerly of Grand Island, died Monday, Dec. 7, 1998, at the Federal Way Convalescent Home in Federal Way, Wash.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home in Grand Island. The Rev. Fred Gardner will officiate. Burial will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to the United Congregational Church.

Mrs. McKnight was born on July 5, 1909, at Plainview to Frank and Verna (Allison) Nelson. She grew up and was educated at Plainview, graduating in 1928 from Plainview High School.

She married Harold McKnight on Sept. 11, 1940, at Plainview. After Mr. McKnight's discharge from the military, they moved to Grand Island, where Mrs. McKnight was a homemaker and mother.

The couple moved to Ogden, Utah, in 1971 and to Primrose in 1975. They returned to Grand Island in 1982.

While in Grand Island, she worked as a waitress for Chapman's Tea Room, a cashier for the Yancey Coffee Shop and a cashier at the Ordnance Plant Cafe.

She was a member of the United Congregational Church, UTU Auxiliary and Union Pacific Old-timers United Employees Club.

Survivors include one son, Lyle McKnight of Kent, Wash.; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband.

William Gillham

William Gillham, 85, of Grand Island, formerly of Greeley, died Wednesday, July 8, 1998, at the Grand Island Veterans Home.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Greeley. The Rev. Gerald Carlson will officiate. Burial will be in Sacred Heart cemetery in Greeley.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m., with a rosary at 7:30 p.m., Thursday at the church.

T.J. Finn and Sons Funeral Home in Greeley is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Gillham was born on Nov. 11, 1912, in Greeley County to Walter and Grace (Moncrieff) Gillham. He graduated from Greeley High School. He served as a staff sergeant in World War II, stationed in England and France. He was also stationed in California, where he later lived and worked.

He returned in 1955 to Greeley, where he managed the lumber yard and was the mayor.

Mr. Gillham was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Greeley and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He enjoyed outdoor sports.

He is survived by numerous cousins.

He was preceded in death by an infant sister, Madeline.

Marvin Morrow

Marvin L. Morrow, 69, of 608 N. Grace Ave. died Tuesday, July 7, 1998, at his home following a short illness.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Kleine Funeral Home. The Rev. George Wheat will officiate. Burial will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to the family.

Mr. Morrow was born on Dec. 11, 1928, at Horace to Curtis S. and Mary E. (Clement) Morrow. He attended school in Horace and Scotia. As a young man, he helped on farms near Scotia. He entered the U.S. Army on Feb. 1, 1953, and served during the Korean War. He was discharged on April 8, 1955.

He married Maxcine M. Schlaich on March 25, 1961, at Papillion. They lived in Omaha, where he worked for LeRoy Wade and Son as a construction worker in iron. He was a member of Local 21 Ironworks Union in Omaha. He retired in 1987, and they moved to Grand Island.

He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles and the American Legion and was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Rose Morrow of Grand Island; one son, Marvin C. Morrow of Ashland; two stepsons, Marvin and Harold White, both of Grand Island; two stepdaughters, Susan Welton of Ashland and Rhonda White of Grand Island; one grandson; 15 step grandchildren; 10 step great-grandchildren; one sister, Darlene Talarico of Omaha; and two brothers, Donald and Bernard Morrow, both of Grand Island.

He was preceded in death by one stepson, Melvin White; one sister, Doris; and two brothers, Dale and Curtis J. Morrow.
